Comfortable, good (not great) sound
on May 24, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
It's been some time since I've looked at expensive headphones as I've had a pair that have worked well for me for a number of years and have not needed another. Those, however, are wired, so I was interested in a bluetooth set that is of high quality so as to be able to use them when a wire might get in the way.
Upon receiving these Audio-Technica ATH-DSR7BT I was immediately impressed by the quality of the packaging, the construction of the headphones themselves, and how comfortable they are on my head and around my ears. They are lightweight without feeling cheap, have an interesting set of touch pads on the side for controlling song and call options, and a small set of switches for power and volume.
Setup was extremely straightforward, since I was pairing them with my phone, I decided to try the NFC pairing. It took seconds, all I did was enable the NFC function on my phone and hold it up to the symbol on the headset. That's it, done, paired and functioning. No searching bluetooth, no entering the code, one swipe with my device and it was all set up. I cant say as I've ever had something pair to my phone with such ease, it was quite a nice experience.
First, I decided to listen to an audiobook through them. The quality of the voice of the narrator was very good, if a little heavy on the treble. The only thing I seemed to have any real trouble with, is that they dont get terribly loud. With the volume all the way up on my phone and all the way up on the headphones, the narrator of the book still only sounded maybe slightly louder than conversational, which was a little bit of a disappointment.
So I decided to listen to some music. It did seem to handle the volume on music a little better, though it's still impossible to get them loud enough to be anything approaching painful. Not that I would recommend someone trying to blow out their eardrums, but at max volume, it was just on the edge of what I would call 'loud'. While listening to music I was again struck by it sounding a bit on the tinny side, and unfortunately when there were a lot of bass instruments, the sound would get a little bit muddy on the lows....
Really what it comes down to is that if you're looking for a very very comfortable set of headphones with easy bluetooth connectivity and decent, if not great, audio quality, then these are them. I really wish the audio quality was a touch better, but it isn't bad by any means. At this price I would have to say they are a bit too much for what you get, but if caught on sale, then they would be well worth the purchase price.

Good speed, basic firmware
on May 8, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
The Linksys EA9300 is following in the footsteps of its bigger brother. It offers excellent speeds, great range and ease of setup, but unfortunately like its brother, it has some requirements and limitations that make one wish that Linksys would give a few more options to consumers.
To start with, the EA9300, like its cousins, pushes you to create a linksys account to set up the device. This is not a requirement, but the setup process makes you feel like it is, and it's somewhat of an annoyance to get around it in order to set up the device locally. I'm not real big on the whole 'big brother' watching my home network so I tend to steer away from creating accounts for devices that I dont feel necessarily need such accounts themselves. That said, however, setup is very straightforward, as is all the new Linksys routers, and you should be up and running with very little hassle.
Which brings me to the firmware. It's fairly bare-bones, not providing functionality like VPN client or server capabilities or wireless bridging. The network map is fairly limited, and it can be difficult to decipher which device is which based on what the router is showing it as (especially if you have a lot of devices). But it gets the job done so it's more of an annoyance than a real complaint.
Where it really matters though, is the range and throughput. This device follows the configuration of its big brother, with a similarly designed footprint and antenna layout and the range is excellent. Speeds are consistent and fast, though as with all current wireless devices, the marketted speed is not currently obtainable with any available network adapters (need simultaneous dual-band or tri-band adapters, which just dont exist yet).
All in all, it's a good device without any major gripes that could really be excellent if the firmware was a bit more robust.

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Easy setup - Great Speeds
on May 2, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
Let me start by saying I have set up a LOT of network devices, both consumer and professional, in my life, and this has to be one of the easiest of all of them.
This device is literally point-and-click setup with easy to follow instructions and no mess.. It's actually hard to write a review for this device BECAUSE it was so easy to set up. Once you connect to the default SSID, it presents you with a setup page tailored to either standard or mobile browsers, it auto-scans the nearby wifi signals, presents you with a list, you select yours, hit next, put in your password and hit save... The device reboots and you're done. Extremely easy... Why aren't all range extenders this easy?
Something that does make this device stand out from the crowd is the dedicated 5GHz backhaul. This is traditionally only available on some of those 'home mesh' wifi systems, but you can create the same with this. What's great about this is that most new tri-band home wifi routers actually allow you to designate independent SSIDs for each radio, so you could, in essence, set up a TRUE dedicated backhaul between your wifi router and this access point to allow for a full speed wireless connection between the devices without any form of other device taking time away from it.
This device is great, there's no other way to talk about it.

Does what it says it will - not induction
on April 2, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
Hard to write a review about a charger, though I did want to point out a few things about this Bose revolve charger.
The charger is not an induction charger, which I find to be quite a disappointment, especially for a speaker of this price point. It uses an odd horseshoe-shaped guide to line up the contacts on the charger with those on the speaker, which can be difficult to line up properly since it's impossible to see the horseshoe as it sits squarely in the middle of the bottom of the speaker.
It charges the speaker well enough, but the lack of ability to set it down on the charger in any direction is a definite drawback and I see no gains in having the charger over using the standard micro-USB cable.
In a world of induction chargers for phones, facial cleansers and toothbrushes, I'm disappointed that a company as high-end as Bose went with such an archaic outdated design.

Deep. Loud. And immersive, too. SoundLink Revolve+, the best-performing portable Bluetooth speaker from Bose, delivers true 360° sound for consistent, uniform coverage. Place it in the center of the room to give everyone the same experience. Or set it near a wall so sound radiates and reflects. This wireless speaker is durable, water-resistant and easy to grab and go - with a rechargeable battery that plays up to 16 hours.

Great sound and portability
on April 2, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
I would consider myself a bit of an audiophile. I have a number of high-end speakers in my house, high end headphones, and enjoy music of all sorts from them. Rarely have I found a portable speaker that is worth writing about, but this is one.
The Bose Soundlink Revolve+ is definitely one of the best bluetooth portable speakers I have ever heard. It is easy to use, has good battery life, great volume and thoughtful options.
First, I'd like to mention that the sound from the Revolve+ is definitely the best of the portable speakers I own, and better than the vast majority of portable speakers I've used. With the Bose name definitely comes the sound quality you would expect and it does not fail to impress. The speaker even manages to deliver noticeable bass response for something so small. The only slight drawback I found is that at higher volumes there was a very very slight muddiness that I'm unused to in other Bose lines, as usually Bose tends to favor the treble more than the bass, however this is mostly not an issue as at these volumes it's uncomfortably loud.
On the point of pure loudness, this speaker also delivers, though the jump in volume per notch up or down seems to be a little extreme, it feels as though it should support a few more steps one direction or the other so that a single tick of the volume button does not have such a vast difference. That said though, it does play plenty loud and quietly enough in either given situation.
The construction is thoughtfully done. The device is covered in a soft-touch rubber feeling material which is nice to hold, but more than that it even has a built in handle for portability. It's a touch on the heavy side when compared to a lot of other portable speakers but I think this is OK as it is designed to be set on a table for 360' sound, not to be carried around. It has a micro USB port for charging and a 3.5mm jack for hard-wired audio in the event your device does not support bluetooth. Something I did not expect was this: It has a tripod screw mount on the bottom which I found very interesting, though I dont know how many people would benefit from it.
The device came with absolutely no charge on the battery, and while that isn't necessarily a problem, it's uncommon, and it forces you to charge it at least a little bit before use. The device supports a charging dock, though the dock uses electrical contacts and has an odd horseshoe mounting guide which can be difficult to get lined up since it is in the middle of the bottom of the speaker and cannot be seen when going to set it on the charger. I find this to be a bit of an archaic design in this world of wireless Qi chargers where devices like facial cleansers and toothbrushes support induction charging and can be put on their chargers facing any direction.
Overall the device sounds great and has some interesting options in the build, though the lack induction charging was a bit of a letdown.

Excellent vacuum - needs some attention to detail
on March 17, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
Over the years I've had many portable vacuums with varying degrees of effectiveness, most of them end up with battery issues or just are not very powerful. More than that, they are rarely able to pick up more than just the smallest amount of crumbs or pet hair off a hard floor, much less a carpet.
Enter the Dyson v7 Motorhead. This device is effective enough to replace even your standard everyday vacuum for most people (except those with very deep-pile carpet). The cleaning head introduces a level of power to a portable vacuum that I've never experienced and is great at what it does. The suction power is excellent, picking up everything I needed it to, even on carpet.
It has multiple attachments, the aformentioned motorhead, an angle chute and a brush attachment. It also comes with a wall hanging mount/dock which makes it so you dont have to dig around for the charging cord every time you go to replace it on the dock. The one down side to the dock is that mine did not come with the mounting screws even though the directions said it was supposed to, so I have not been able to mount it yet.
The one down side to this portable vacuum is actually its weight, especially with the motorhead attached. If you're trying to vacuum a large area rug you will feel it start to wear against the soft spot between your thumb and forefinger. The reason for this is that it has no real wheels (it has tiny ones for hard floors but nothing that would help carpet) so you're fighting against the friction introduced by a carpet, so when pushing it, the weight of the device is pushing back against the soft spot on your hand, and when pulling it back towards you, you're fighting against the forward motion of the motorhead.
Outside of those minor things, this is a great vacuum and I'd recommend it to anyone with many area rugs, a large amount of hard floor or a smaller living space where a full size vacuum doesn't make as much sense.

A departure from your standard MMO
on January 13, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
Verified Purchase:Yes
Now I will preface this by saying I dont have a ton of time in it just yet, but I will review what I have experienced so far.
I come from a background of PC gaming exclusively and have very little experience with consoles, particularly shooters on consoles as I find it very difficult to aim with an analog stick. Unfortunately I still do with this game, however they've put a great deal of effort into making a fun MMO that can be experienced with your friends over XBox Live. The game looks great, the graphics are amazing and I look forward to becoming more used to the controls of the game.
Being as this game has been out for some time now with multiple expansions, they have fortunately given new players a level boost so if you are playing with someone who has been around the game for a while, you have the opportunity to join them in their higher level missions sooner, rather than them waiting for you to level up. This is a great benefit and one I have already taken advantage of.
Really my only criticism of the game isn't really the game's fault. Microsoft has said that mouse and keyboard support is coming to the XBONE but it has not yet arrived. I imagine this and many other games will become that much better once a mouse and keyboard can be used with them.
I heartily recommend this game to anyone with an XBONE, especially if they have friends that already play it.

Could be MUCH better...
on January 11, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
I have to say I was rather excited to get the Linksys Velop whole home WiFi system as I have a house that is very difficult to cover effectively. Unfortunately, the devices did not live up to my expectations.
Initial Impression:
The packaging was good, it definitely gave the feel of a premium device. The lid was closed with a magnet and each device was nessled in its own spot in the box, even the power bricks were behind a padded piece.
Setup......
Awful. The first warning note was that it basically requires the Linksys Smart WiFi app, and more than that, the app requires you to have an account with Linksys. I'm not a very big fan of the whole 'big brother' watching my home network. In other linksys devices I've had in the past I've simply gone about the setup by bypassing the linksys account and linksys apps. That is not an option here.
I thought at first things were going well, it found the first node and acted like it was setting up great... Unfortunately I was connected to a different known wifi on my phone at the time and none of the settings saved on the Velop, so when I went to reconnect to it through the App (more on that in a minute) it had all of the default settings in my Linksys account and I had to re-update them.
Now, why did I have to reconnect? As I mentioned, I thought the initial setup went well, then I went to set up the additional nodes and the process hung on attempting to connect to the new node, backing out of that portion did not work and neither did restarting the app, so I had to reboot my phone for it to even find the new node. More than that, when attempting to go through the process of adding a node when you're no longer in the initial setup, it's in the most obscure place possible. You'd think it might be in the dashboard of the Velop, or even in the 'Velop Administration' section since having nodes is purely a Velop function. But instead of either of those places, you have to select 'setup a new device' where it will finally give you the option to add to your Velop network.
Next, when it finally was able to connect to the node, it repeatedly told me I was out of range, even when in the same room, and what's worse about this is that it has to wait until the entire boot process of the node is complete, you'd think it could have some sort of WiFi meter in the app to tell you if you're getting too close or too far from the original node before bothering with plugging it in. And if it didn't tell me I was out of range, it got stuck on a screen that said 'checking your node's location' until I restarted the app (I waited at least 15 minutes on this screen).
I have my reservations about using this throughout my house if it believes the nodes are too far apart when they are in the same room. Hopefully some app updates will come down to clean this up as I cannot say enough negative things about the setup process.
One final note. I am using Android to set this up, I've heard that the iPhone experience is much better, and I can only hope it is because the Android experience is terrible. Also, I did try this on more than one android device to ensure it was not just an issue with my phone. In all cases the Android experience is horrendous.
Usage:
The usage is not bad, although with the pains of the initial setup I'm unsure what sort of range I can expect out of these devices if going 1 room away is too far. I guess it will take some massaging to determine this.
Bottom Line:
Great 'premium' feel to the devices and packaging. Horrible setup process and questionable range. Unfortunately in its current iteration, I cannot recommend these devices. I'm extremely disappointed.

Easy Setup - Great Video Quality
on January 6, 2017
Posted by: Beradon
The Netgear Arlo is Netgear's entry in what is quickly becoming a crowded market for DIY cloud-connected home security. I have to say, that with the initial setup and use, it does not disappoint.
Packaging:
Honestly, this is one of my few gripes. The packaging is annoying to get in to, the cameras are literally screwed into the packaging using some very narrow thumb screws. It took a minute to figure out how to remove the plastic box from the packaging itself, then remove the tray the cameras are on, then try to unscrew the thumb screws. If you have large fingers as I do, you may have some difficulties with this as the screws are very thin and hard to grip. I understand Netgear wanting to show off their product, but this was a bit on the overkill side of things.
Connectivity and Initial Setup:
The setup is actually quite easy and very literally 'plug and play', though that's a negative as well... The base station REQUIRES a wired connection. In this world of WiFi, I find it hard to believe they could not put a wireless radio in the station to allow for it to be placed in more locations. I understand that the cameras can be, but being that the base station is where the siren is, if you have your router in a closet/basement/etc and have to put the base station there too, who will hear the siren? Obviously we all know that routers should be centrally located in a house to provide optimal WiFi reception, but in all honesty, I can't recall a single time where anyone I know has actually been able to do that.
The camera batteries come with a full charge so there is no need to wait on them to charge for initial setup and use. In addition, the charger uses a micro usb cable of good length so there shouldn't be any difficulties locating this in a useful place.
Once done connecting the base station and waiting for the somewhat lengthy boot up, it then becomes a simple task of installing the app on your phone and progressing through the inital set up phase (syncing cameras, etc). All is very straightforward and I was done in a matter of minutes, with the longest portion being the actual account creation with Netgear.
The app allows for logging in with fingerprint if your device supports it, so that was nice to see.
They give you the option of using the free standard 7-day 5-camera monitoring and cloud storage on initial setup, there are also 2 options for more devices and more length of time. I think in most cases the basic (free) plan is plenty for most home users.
Usage:
Immediately upon setup I was bombarded with notifications for motion sensing, so I had to go back that setting down in the app, again a fairly simple process.
The video quality is phenomenal in daylight, I was very impressed, and while on the same network or on 4G LTE the framerate of the video is excellent. The view angle is good, allowing me to see a very large portion of a 20 ft wide family room from a centrally located fireplace mantle. Audio comes through well and I had no difficulties hearing what my family was doing in the room I had it set up in.
Dark performance was on par with most night-vision capable cameras, which is to say it worked well, but I wasn't blown away.
The siren is extremely loud. I understand that this should go without saying, however in using other similar systems, one of the more common complaints is that the siren is too quiet. I can honestly say in this instance that is not the case.
Bottom Line:
With the market for connected home security already becoming quickly saturated, the Netgear Arlo stands out in that the cameras are completely wire-free. The motion sensitivity is good though it does not appear to 'learn', but there are adjustments for that sensitivity. I do think, however, that with the capability of adding more cameras to the unit, this may be one of the easiest ways for multi-point visual and motion security for many people, especially since you can really place the cameras anywhere.

Excellent high power blender
on December 23, 2016
Posted by: Beradon
This is really something else. I dont have tons of experience with blenders necessarily, having only ever had cheaper varieties, but this thing is kind of amazing. The included cups that can be used to drink out of as well as blend into are pretty cool. Makes cleanup very easy when finished, no additional dishes. I haven't really determined what I'll use the bowl for yet, though I've read all sorts of recipes about making cookiedough and stuff in a blender, so I'll have to give that a shot.
It's super powerful, nothing is left in chunks or anything. The iQ features really lend themselves to doing exactly what you would expect them to. Really a one-and-done kind of thing. Made some amazing mango smoothies in this and looking forward to doing it again.
If you're in the market for a blender that's more than your average budget brand, I wouldn't hesitate to grab this one.

Is the Elite 7 Pro "vented" like the AirPod Pro and 85t? I returned the 75t becasue I didn't like the plugged ear feeling.

They are not, since they are noise canceling earbuds they create close to a seal in your ear to prevent sound leakage. That said, they do have a hear-through option in the jabra app which greatly alleviates that feeling of 'plugged' because you get sound from around you through the headset instead of that blocked up feeling. So if you choose to, turn that on and it will help a lot.

Clean those hard-to-reach places in your home with this Shark cordless vacuum. Its bristle brush deep-cleans any carpet, and the additional soft-roll brush pulls in larger particles from wood floors while polishing them. The rechargeable, high-capacity Li-Ion battery keeps this Ninja cordless vacuum's DuoClean Technology ready for tough cleaning chores.

I need a lightweight vacuum for medical reasons which would you recommend? Also one that is powerful!

It's not the lightest vacuum in the stick-vac market, but it's not heavy by any means. If you can hold the motor in your off-hand or set the motor on the ground then it is far lighter than any other stick vac. It has great power, and the dual-head system makes it more efficient at picking up things than any single head vac I've seen in the segment. That said, a Dyson V8/V10 or some of Shark's other stick vacs is going to be lighter overall than this one.

Is it gentle on hardwood floors ? Concerned with wheels if they are hard plastic... Thanks!

The brush itself seems relatively soft, and the wheels are rubberized. That said, I dont use it on my hardwood, though the instruction manual does discuss using it on hardwood.

Anyone successful in connecting Amazon Alexa to VR1AM7040WG PowerBot R7040 ?

I have not been able to, as even when it has completed the wifi setup configuration, the app believes itself to not be connected to the vacuum.
