The Dell XPS 17 laptop delivers powerful performance in an incredibly thin form factor. The stunning 4-sided InfinityEdge UHD+ display enables an amazing screen to body ratio (93.7%) and a 17-inch screen in a 15-inch size form factor. In fact, it’s smaller than 48% of 15-inch laptops. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics feature unique dual opposite outlet fans, that increase fan airflow by approximately 30% and drive cooling airflow in both directions, resulting in more airflow overall and improved skin temperatures. A 100% Adobe RGB display enables you to edit your videos with confidence in their color. 100% of the enclosure is sculpted by a CNC (computer numerical control) machining process. A high precision, machine-milled aluminum chassis creates an elegant design with high build quality that’s stronger and stiffer than magnesium or plastic. A premium 17" touch laptop with a thin and light design.

Premium desktop replacement
on September 4, 2021

The Dell XPS 17 9310 is a beast of a machine, more than ample as a desktop replacement for the office or home. Despite the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card, it's not aimed at the gamer. Rather, with its 16x10 ratio (3810x2400) thin-bezel UDH+ display and 100% Adobe RGB gamut, it’s aimed at content creators.
The keyboard is wonderful. Nice soft touch and quiet. There is no separate number pad. Instead, the space on the side is used by speakers that are larger than if a number pad were included. It’s a trade-off for sure, but does deliver excellent sound.
The size of the touchpad is commensurate with the screen. Large and a blessing for content editing software. Folks have reported quality issues with Dell’s trackpads in the past, but I had no issues on my machine's touchpad.
There a couple of flaws that are worthy enough for me to knock off a half star.
• The screen comes uncalibrated and is heavily red shifted. Creators will pick up on this immediately, though, to be fair, most serious or professional creators will use their Spyder or other tool to calibrate anyway. But even office users are likely to notice it. You’ll want to at least use the Windows calibration tool to adjust the screen.
• Though the screen is is UDH+, to view any kind of HDR10 (such as Netflix UltraHD) you will need to keep the laptop plugged in. When watching such content on battery power, you will see banding in low light scenes.
The laptop has 4 USB-C ports and a full-size SD card reader. Dell includes one USB-A/HDMI dongle, but if you have a lot of USB-A devices, you’ll need a different adaptor. The Windows 10 license will allow you to upgrade to Windows 11 at no cost as it gets released over the next few months.
Overall I give this 4.5 stars and highly recommend putting this on your shortlist.

Good quality but no upward facing sound
on September 3, 2021

Note that these rear speakers are being reviewed as part of the entire 7.1.2 channel speaker system including the HF-A7000 sound bar and SA-SW5 subwoofer.
If Star Trek’s holodeck existed, this would be the sound system they use. My previous system was the Sony HT-Z9F, and I wanted a new sound bar that had a more memorable model number. That and the fact that my old one was no longer reliable. Often, there would be a delay of 5 to 10 seconds before the sound would come through after turning on the TV.
The setup of the A7000 system is about as easy as it gets. The wireless rears and subwoofer connect automatically to the sound bar. Once that’s done, you can run an auto-configuration in which the sound bar will play some tones to measure the speaker placement. No more pulling out a tape measure to check distance, though you still can if you want.
I thought the sound of my old Z9F, however, was fantastic. But Sony has upped the sound quality even more in the A7000. The A7000 is a hefty sound bar and no doubt its size helps it create the enormous sound stage it produces. It has speakers that direct sound forward, upwards, as well as towards the side. And each of those speakers is engineered for hitting just the right acoustic. When connected to the wireless rear speakers and subwoofer, the result is a rich, full, sound the envelopes you. Watching UltraHD movies on Netflix, for example, makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the action.
Sony also has a setting called Immersive Audio Enhancement (AE) to “convert” regular audio as if it were 7.1.2. Initially I thought it would sound too artificial. Obviously if the source signal is not 7.1.2, the sound bar can’t actually direct sound to the correct location. But once I got used to Immersive AE’s simulation, turning it off made the sound noticeably less rich.
Like many sound bars, there is a separate volume setting to punch up the sound of voice. Whereas I had maxed out that setting on the Z9F, dialogue from the A7000 was perfectly discernible without needing to adjust the voice volume.
Though the speaker system aims squarely for watching movies and shows, its 360 Reality Audio implementation is also remarkable for music services that offer premium quality sound: Amazon Music HD (included with their Unlimited plan), Tidal and Nugs.net. Though these services sound great with headphones, hearing this quality of music in a room speaker system is liberating.
There are a couple of negatives, and for that, I’d really rate this as 4.5 stars. First, the rear spears sound great as expected, but they don’t fire upwards. Instead, they are standard configuration rears. Second, the 300W subwoofer is a beast and I can understand why it’s at additional cost. At the price point of the sound bar by itself, however, I think it would be a better value if Sony had at least included the 200W subwoofer, and perhaps the rear speakers as well.
In any case, this system delivers premium sound with ease of install and ease of use. The sound bar by itself will enhance any room. But the addition of the wireless rear and subwoofer speakers adds an amazing dimension not to be missed.

Sturdy light setup
on August 9, 2021
Posted by: ricks

This is a great little stand that is sturdier than a tabletop tripod, and more versatile. It has holders for your phone and for the included LED light. Though the product photos show a phone being used in the lower arm and the light in the top one, you could use it the other way around depending on what angle of light you’re trying to achieve. The light also comes with a laptop clip in case you want to use it by itself on your laptop on the go. The LED panel is thin and light and easy to take with you. I knocked off 1 star because the light is quite direct and really needs a diffuser. Also, the stand could be taller. Regardless, I recommend this.

Decent Flash Drive
on July 26, 2021
Posted by: ricks

This SanDisk Dual Drive Luxe 512GB has both USB Type-C and Type-A, and makes it more useful than flash sticks with just a single interface. It performs as advertised, though runs hot. It delivers read speeds up to 150MB/s, which is good enough for general office and school use. I was able to consistently get over 140MB/s on USB-C. Other drives on the market are faster in case you’re dealing with photo/video or other large files. Once nice touch is the drive snaps firmly in place when you rotate to select USB-C or USB-A.

High Quality Starter Kit
on June 19, 2021
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If you’re just getting into vlogging, this RØDE kit is an excellent starter package. All the parts are high quality and sturdy, giving you confidence that your phone, light cube and microphone will stay put while you’re recording. I have a few nits with the equipment, making this really 4.5 stars instead of 5.
• The iOS kit’s microphone plugs directly into the lightning port of the iPhone. If you use a case for your iPhone, it could hamper a good connection. It would have been nice if the microphone had a cable instead. The good news is once you get the mic into the port, its design grips the phone and will not come loose easily. Also, though the mic and dead cat wind filter look large, the camera lens will not see the microphone in the frame.
• The light cube has 4 brightness settings instead of a dial for infinite variations. The lowest setting is still quite bright. The cube has a built-in battery that’s recharged via its USB-C port (cable included).
• The light also has 7 colored filters plus a diffuser. It was a little tricky inserting the filter, but it stays in place once done. There’s also room to stack a couple filters, which is nice because you’d probably want the diffuser on all the time anyway.
• The tripod is not extendable at all. It’s really meant to be hand held. It can be used on a table top, but the bottom of the legs don’t have rubber pads to help grip it into variable positions. If used on a table top, the most stable position is legs fully widened.
These are relatively minor gripes compared to the excellent quality of the package. I highly recommend this kit if you’re getting stated in vlogging.

Nit-Picky Tweezers
on June 19, 2021
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
There’s a very nit-picky product designer out there somewhere who thought about every aspect of these tweezers. And the world is better for it. These tweezers have amazing gapless pincers, making it a breeze to grasp the tiniest of hairs, splinters, or delicate wires from circuit boards. Plus, these are the mini version, not as long as regular tweezers. This makes it easer to maneuver in tight spaces. They come with a plastic storage tube, making it easier to find in your purse or wherever you store them.

B&W PI5 true wire-free headphones are attractive, well-built, and they deliver a refined sound quality. Featuring Bluetooth 5.0 with Qualcomm aptX technology these earphones ensure reliable connectivity whether you are streaming from your smartphone, tablet or PC. Allows connection of up to two devices at the same time, however, only one device can be used to play or make a call at a time. Download the Bowers & Wilkins free headphone app, available for Apple and Android for further control of the sound and noise cancellation, right on your phone. The PI5 headphones feature the latest innovations in adaptive noise cancellation along with 4 built-in microphones that pick up ambient noise and cancel it with an equal, but opposite, audio signal and enhance the call quality. There are three levels of Adaptive Noise Cancellation – High, Low and Auto, that can be controlled either by the multi-functional button on the left earbud or via the app. Similarly, the touch-sensitive button on the right earbud allows you to enable voice assistance. The buttons also allows you to control playback and phone call functions with single (play/pause, answer call), double (skip forward, end call), or triple presses (skip backward). Another stand-out feature of these headphones is the intuitive detection sensors that put the earphones on standby or reconnect them depending upon whether they are removed or put back on. The PI5s come with a sturdy and attractive charging case for charging the earbuds when not in use. The case is equipped with two 350mAh rechargeable batteries. Each earbud has a rechargeable battery which provides up to 4 hours of wireless playback. Including the charging case, the PI5 can provide up to 12 hours of continuous playback.

Great Sound But Some Flaws
on May 17, 2021
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
I was looking forward to trying the Bowers & Wilkins PI5, and the sound did not disappoint. But for a premium brand at a premium price, it falls short of a 5-star rating.
PROs
• First off, these are the best fitting in-ear buds I’ve ever had. They are comfortable and form a snug seal, so as to keep noise out even without adaptive noise cancelling (ANC) turned on. Earbud fit is especially non-universal, so YMMV. The box contains 3 different sized ear tips, so hopefully one of them will work for you.
• They have great sound with just the right amount of natural but emphatic bass – not overpowering like other brands. Highs could be slightly punchier, but nothing to really complain about. Key thing is you need to turn ANC on to get the great sound; when ANC is off, sound is flat.
• Besides improving the soundstage, the ANC does a good job of canceling what outside noise does get through the good seal.
• Earbuds are easy to grasp and remove from the case without slipping out of my hands. I have other buds that I’m always dropping because of their shape and slippery finish.
• Charging case supports wireless charging or USB-C.
• Their free app allows for ambient pass-through to let you hear your surroundings.
CONs
• By far the biggest flaw is the wear sensors. When the wear sensors detect you’ve removed the buds from your ears, they enter a power saving mode. Then they automatically connect to the last connected device when you wear them again. Unfortunately the sensors have a lot of false positives and enter standby even though you’re wearing them. That means the buds randomly stop and start playback after about 10 to 15 minutes of use. Sometimes music starts playing again immediately after a stop, but sometimes it takes a few minutes or longer. It’s incredibly annoying and a deal breaker if you like having this feature turned on. If you disable the wear sensor (via the app), playback is not interrupted.
• No multi-point Bluetooth. Can only pair to one device at a time. Also, in order to pair to a new device, you need the case, unlike many other earbuds which can enter pairing mode by a long press on the earbud or headphone.
• Lid on case closes very easily, especially when you’re trying to push the pair button.
• App experience is average at best, as there is no EQ or sound profile adjustments.
• Ambient pass-through can be set on/off only via the app only instead of by buttons. So if you need to listen for ambient sounds momentarily (like crossing a street or talking to a someone), you have to whip out your phone to enter ambient mode. Frankly, it’s just easier to remove one of the earbuds.
Despite these flaws, I still recommend considering these simply for their comfort and sound. Just realize other earbuds may give you a few more features for the money.

Feature Packed Shotgun Mic
on May 10, 2021
Posted by: ricks
from SF Bay Area
If you shoot video with your DSLR, you are likely unhappy with the quality of sound it records. The mics on most DSLRs have underpowered preamps and don’t let you find a decent sign-to-noise ratio. That’s when you realize the need for an external mic. And when go down that path, be sure to put the Shure VP83F on your shortlist.
The Shure VP83F isn’t the cheapest shotgun mic for DSLRs on the market, but it packs a lot of features you didn’t know you needed. The primary (but not the only) difference between this and the Shure VP83 is the “F” for flash. That means this model lets you optionally record your audio to a MicroSDHC at a very high quality 24-bit/48kHz sampling rate. You can still use your DSLR to capture reference audio when you record to the SD card on the mic.
The VP83F also has fine tuned gain control, letting you adjust gain up to 60 db in 1 -db increments (Note: as of the time of this review, the Best Buy description stating this model has only 3 settings is incorrect. That is for the VP83). That level of control ensures good SNR regardless of your recording environment or subject.
All settings and controls are easily configured via a joystick on the LCD display. The text might be a bit small for some folks, but it’s still legible and easier to navigate than a bunch of buttons. The display also gives you a view of battery life, recording space available on the SD card, level meter, and more.
The major downside of this mic is that 2 AA batteries will get you about 10 hours of operation versus the 130 hours for the VP83. There are also some minor quirks such as no indicator on the mic for which direction the batteries or SD card should be inserted; but once you’re aware, it’s not an issue.
In my test run, the mic delivered on its promise of recording high quality sound. It was certainly better than the reference audio from my camera. I can’t wait for my next shoot.

Is there an App to set the equalizer?

The app currently does not have an equalizer function. Not sure if they plan to add this functionality in the future, but would be nice.

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How well do these work for silencing out loud snoring from your bed partner?

The volume of the sleepbuds can be turned up pretty high, so as to cover up the snoring. But then the question is can you sleep with loud sound playing in your ears? These are not earplugs – they do not reduce external sounds, they only mask them.

Create incredible images every day, anywhere with Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Get the magic of Adobe Photoshop CC and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC, plus everything else you need to organize, enhance, and share your photos like a pro on your desktop and mobile devices.

With this program, can you make flyers, posters and layouts? crop your photos also?

The short answer is yes, you can do all of those things. Note that Lightroom and especially Photoshop are like "Swiss Army Knives." They are powerful editing tools designed for many different functions and activities. That means you won't find a simple setting for "make a flyer," and so on. But if you take the time to learn the software (which admittedly can take some time), it will more than deliver what you’re asking.
