Pocket Sized and Powerful

I've thought about getting a small pocket sized projector for a while now. As a photographer/videographer I like to show people my work wherever I need to. Showing it on my iPhone is too small and I don't always carry my large iPad with me. This projector is only 4"x 4"x ¾" so it's just slightly larger than an iPhone. The image is fairly bright and if you don't try to fill a wall with the image, keeping the image under 2 ft wide in a slightly darkened room will give you a nice image. The audio is about as loud as you could get from a speaker that small but in a small room, you could still hear it well and you can adjust the volume with the up/down switches. There is an ⅛" audio headphone jack to plug into headphones or an external speaker if you need to fill the room.
I would have liked if there was a microSD card slot so I could just load my photos/videos and project them directly without needing to connect my iPhone to it. I don't have the lightning to HDMI adapter yet and I won't buy one now until I see if the iPhone 12 will still have a lightning jack or if it will change to a USB-C jack. Some rumors say that Apple might even ditch the jack completely and use only WiFi or Bluetooth to connect to other devices. I did try a Google ChromeCast plugged into the HDMI jack as well and powered it by plugging it into the projector's USB jack and I was able to cast my photos and videos from my iPhone. YouTube and Movies Anywhere worked fine as well. The problem is I have to have the ChromeCast connected to a network for it to work. I am looking for a way to use the projector wherever I am and not need to connect to a network. I've looked online for a small pocket sized Media Player that could plug into the projector's HDMI port but all the Media Players I have found require plugging them into an electrical outlet. I would like something that was battery operated. There is also a knob to adjust the focus of the projector depending on the distance to the screen
There is a standard ¼" tripod socket so you can mount the projector on a tiny tripod so you can adjust the angle of the image. They say the battery will last 2 hours on a charge so if I plan to watch a movie that's more than 2 hours long, I'll have to plug it into the included adapter.
The lens has no cover to protect the glass so if I keep it in a pocket or briefcase I have to be very careful not to damage it. A small case should have been included to protect the projector when carrying it so I will have to buy one. They did include a standard HDMI cable as well as a power adapter to charge the projector's internal battery or run it on electric.
The Miroir M125 Micro Pro Projector is a nice compact unit and if you have a need for such a device I would say it gives off a nice sharp image and you will enjoy it.

Just What I've Been Waiting For
on May 8, 2020

I've thought about buying a drone since they first came out but the flight time on the lower priced models were too short and the quality of the video and stills were too low. I mostly shoot landscape photos and videos and they have always been at eye level. I wanted a way to get a higher angle and a drone will really fit the bill. Unfortunately a lot of the places I like to shoot in such as National Parks and state parks prohibit drones but there are many other places to shoot around the country as long as I follow the map on the B4UFly app.
To prepare myself for getting the drone, I started watching a lot of YouTube videos and reading up on drones to prepare myself. It turns out that flying the drone is very simple. The Mavic Air 2 is lightweight and small yet handles the wind very well. The first thing I did when I got it was charge the batteries, update the firmware and register the drone with the FAA. I then made up labels for the drone with the FAA registration number, my email address and my phone numbers and applied them to the drone in the event the drone got lost. I then took it out for it's maiden voyage.I picked up a 3 foot landing pad to prevent dust and pebbles from damaging the drone when it takes off. I set the pad on the ground, put the drone on top and got ready for takeoff. It was amazing to watch it start up for the first time as it lifted up off the ground and hovered at around 4 feet. Controlling it using the joysticks was as easy as playing a video game. The video and stills looked amazing. I couldn't believe the quality of the 4K video and still images when I looked at them afterwards. I didn't realize at first that there is no audio recorded in the drone along with the video. After all in the sky, what would you hear outside of the motors and the wind noise. The audio is recorded into the cached video on the phone and has to be exported and then mixed with the drones video but it's not that difficult.
If you are trying to decide if you should buy the Fly More Combo, my answer is a definite yes. You get 2 extra batteries, a multiple battery charger, extra propellers, a carrying case, an extra set of joysticks and all the cables you could possibly need for whatever kind of phone you use on the remote control.
All in all, the DJI Mavic Air 2 is great for a beginner like me or a big improvement if you are upgrading from a Mavic Air or Mavic Mini. You will have a lot of fun flying it.

One of the Best Mics I ever Owned
on January 15, 2020
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
I have quite a collection of microphones that I accumulated throughout my life. Unless a mic breaks, there is no reason to throw it out. I own handheld mics, shotgun mics, wired and wireless lavalier mics and many old computer mics. I have never had a good quality mic that plugged directly into my iPhone, iPad or MacPro. Yes, my mics would plug into the MacPro through the analog jack but it never sounded very professional. This Samson Satellite mic sounds great on all platforms.
It has a Mini-USB jack on the side of the mic that I can plug the included Mini-USB to Lightning cable so I can connect to the iPhone or iPad and doesn't require additional power, it draws it's power from the iDevice. It also came with a Mini-USB to USB-A so I can plug it into my MacPro or my Windows computer. Using my own adapter, I can even plug it into my USB-C Windows notebook. There is a standard ⅜ inch stereo jack on the side of the mic that I can plug my headphones into and a knob to adjust the volume to my headset for live monitoring or playback from the recording.
When using it on the iPhone or iPad, it doesn't require any additional drivers, All the audio apps I tried recognized the mic automatically. They also supply you with a link to the Performer Music Production Software from MOTU for free software but once again you can use whatever software you are already using.
The mic has a switch that allows you to change the polar patterns of the mic: Omnidirectional, Unidirectional and Bidirectional. There is even a touch sensitive mute button on the mic as well.
One unique thing this mic has that I never saw on another mic i a built in stand. There are 3 legs that you unfold to stand the mic up in front of you as you record a podcast or a lecture or if you want to put the mic on a stand, fold up the 3 legs and screw the mic onto a standard ⅝ inch microphone stand.
Now get this, it actually came with a paper manual that's large enough to read and I didn't have to download the PDF to read. The last device I bought came with a manual so tiny I gave up trying to read it and just downloaded it and read it on the screen.
The most important thing about the mic is that it sounds great. I'm not an audio engineer, just a video producer and for my productions, this mic sounds great.
For the price, I don't think you could get a better mic than this.

A Fun Toy and Great Excercise as Well
on November 30, 2019

Back in 1977, I was a fan of Star Wars before anyone had ever heard of it. I had gotten many press kits, photos and program books from a friend that was a theatre manager months before the first film was released. I sold a lot of it at a Sci-Fi convention before opening day so I knew it was going to be big. Like an idiot, I got to the Loew's Astor Plaza in NY (the largest screen at the time) at 6AM, and was the first one on line and that became a tradition for me for all the Star Wars films. I have been a Star Wars junkie ever since. Between the books, audiobooks, comics, animated series and movies, Star Wars has been a big part of my life.
I have owned many lightsabers over the years including the original hilt that I owned prior to Star Wars using it in the movie (it was a Graflex Flash Gun that was attached to my Graflex camera). Of course it didn't light up or make any noises but it was authentic to say the least. Over the years there have been many lightsabers depicted in the movies and the beams were different colors depending on which characters owned them. Most of the lightsabers I owned each lit up in a single color. This Lightsaber Academy Interactive Battle Lightsaber can change color depending on which character you train with.
The lightsaber (which needs 3 AAA batteries) connects to your phone by Bluetooth using their app and walks you through battle training. Using the gyroscope in the lightsaber it is able to determine the angle of each strike and movement so it can grade and score your accomplishments. You can train with Master Yoda, Darth Vader, Rey, Kylo Ren,Luke Skywalker and Mace Windu. The hilt opens up to reveal a Kyber Crystal that glows matching the color of the beam but that is just for show. The lightsaber itself makes noises and has various sayings as you do the training. The app talks as well using various character voices and you can train following the motions on the app and play against practice droids and eventually battle against other friends who have the same lightsaber. At my age, I don't plan to play against anyone but it is good exercise to move around and follow the onscreen prompts. I would really recommend mirroring your phone to a large TV as it is difficult to watch your phone and follow the moves. Also make sure you have plenty of clearance where you swing the lightsaber or you will bang into things as you move.
It's a fun toy and if I can enjoy it, I'm sure children will love to get one as well.
May the Force Be With You!

Incredible Quality for Such A Small Camera
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
22 years ago, I gave up shooting wedding videos. When I first started, I used a VHS camcorder, then an S-VHS camcorder and then the first digital camcorder. They were quite large by today's standard, needed a powerful light on top which blinded everyone and I came home with a back ache from carrying the camera, lights and battery packs for 8 hours.
When I look at this GoPro Hero8 Black's size and quality of the finished video, I feel I gave all my clients garbage videos, but that was the best we could do at that time. Before I got this GoPro Hero8, I watched a lot of videos on YouTube comparing it with previous versions of the GoPro and with other cameras. I read all the specs and you can find plenty of sites where they analyze every aspect of the camera. I never owned an action camera before but I do own a few 360 degree cameras which are used for other purposes. I'm not going to get into the specs here, I'm going to give you my impression of the camera.
First, it is incredibly small. So small that if I mounted it to my chest, or used a shoulder strap mount, no one would even notice me shooting. I'm not an action kind of guy. I don't bike, surf, skateboard or do anything other than walk through towns, museums, parks or wherever and make the best videos I can, basically for myself or my friends. The first thing I did was strap it onto a chest mount and walked down the path I normally walk for exercise. Now I can play it on my iPad on top of my treadmill when the weather is bad and due to the great quality of the video it's almost like I'm walking my usual walk (almost). The video using the Hypersmooth 2.0 stabilization is incredibly stabile for side to side motion but it still picks up the walking motion. I noticed that using my Insta360 One X camera and my iPhone using a gimbal as well so I guess that hasn't been perfected yet. I tried the Timewarp feature which sped up the video and I tried the Timelapse feature in another video test. There are many features of the camera I haven't begun to explore yet such as Night Lapse, Liveburst, Superphoto and more but then again I've only had the camera few days now.
One of the problems I had, not having fingernails was opening the door to remove the battery and MicroSD card and also removing the MicroSD card, I needed to use tweezers to pull out the card. If you don't bite you nails you shouldn't have any problems. I was disappointed that there isn't a built in standard ¼" tripod hole so even though I have a closet full of tripods, mini tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, etc. I had to purchase a collection of mounts to be able to use my tripods but now I have the chest mount, wrist mount and all other ways of mounting the camera. When using the chest mount, I can't get to the settings on the back of the camera so I used the iPhone app that let me control the various features of the camera remotely. One feature I really like is the voice control of the camera. While it's strapped to my chest, I can start and stop the recording just by saying "GoPro start recording" or "GoPro stop recording". There are many other voice commands and I'll learn them in time. I found that I only got around an hour of shooting time on the battery so I wanted to order a few more batteries. I found online a lot of cheap knockoff batteries whose prices were tempting but upon reading a few articles about the Hero8 Black if you use any batteries other than the OEM blue bottom batteries you can not use the Hypersmooth 2.0 with Boost as the camera will tell you that on the screen so I will purchase the OEMs right away.
This is an amazing camera and I sure wish it had been around back when I was shooting weddings, it would have made my life so much easier.

This speaker has it all

I'm the president of a computer club and although I speak loudly enough for the group to hear, there are a few of our presenters who mumble to themselves and people in the back row yell out for them to speak louder. I decided that we should have a large PA speaker to help them out. The room isn't that large so I opted to get the 2nd largest one. The largest weighs a lot more and since I'm the one transporting it to every meeting along with a projector and laptop, I felt this one was large enough. I brought it to last week's meeting and wow, did it fill the room with it's 50 watts of power. The included microphone was a great touch, everyone was able to hear everything loudly and clearly. The sound is phenomenal. I like that it has a 50 hour battery so I don't have to plug in yet another device for our presentations. Using it's Bluetooth capabilities, we connected from my MacBook to another's MacBook to my iPad to someone'e iPhone with no problem. Although it has an AM/FM radio with 20 presets built in, I doubt we will ever use the radio at a meeting but I can certainly use it in my backyard when relaxing. If anyone runs out of power on their phone at a meeting, they can always plug in to the USB charging port on the front of the speaker. The speaker is water resistant but somehow I doubt it will rain inside at one of our meetings but in my backyard, you never know.
All in all this is a great speaker and I'm very happy with it.

Very Clear Video
on August 21, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
I had a previous dash cam and this one has a much sharper picture with a 160 degree shooting angle and 1296p recording as opposed to my previous one that recorded at 1080p. I like that it's a lot smaller in size sitting on the windshield than my last one and the fact that it uses a 3M adhesive on the mount rather than a suction cup that always fell off on a very hot day when the glass got too hot as well as thermal protection for the unit itself. This dash cam slides off the mount if I want to take it with me leaving the mount in place on the glass. I thought I would just be able to remove the old dash cam leaving the wiring but unfortunately this one connects using a micro-USB connector whereas the old one used a mini-USB. This one, the Cobra Drive HD didn't come with a tool for helping to run the wire around the windshield and door jamb like the last one did so I dug up the old tool and in just about 5 minutes, I rewired the cable. It was very easy.
This Cobra Drive HD Dash Cam came with a microSD card as well as a cable to connect the unit to a computer and offload the video without having to use a separate card reader. There is also an HDMI jack for connecting the unit to a monitor or TV if you need to view the video on a larger screen.
There is a button to take a screen shot and a button to turn the microphone on and off.
They offer the iRadar app for iOS and Android that has a map, a speedometer and if I decide to subscribe to the iRadar community for $49/yr or $4.99/month the app will give me real-time alerts such as police or accidents as reported by other iRadar users.
There is a parking mode that will start the dash cam recording if it detects motion which I didn't realize until I started to play back the videos. There is a button to do emergency recordings that will remain even when the other videos delete themselves when the SD card fills up. There is a feature called G-Sensor Detection that will detect a collision and start recording as well as lane departure warning if you drift out of the lane.
I played back a video that it shot at night and I noticed that green traffic lights looked blue, which is no big deal but when I drove down very dark residential streets, I could only see street lights and windows that were illuminated. Most of the houses and cars on the street were way to dark to see any detail so I'm taking off 1 star for that.
For a device this small, it packs a lot of features into it making it a great choice.

Thinnest External Hard Drive Ever
on August 16, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
You can never have enough hard drive space. I do a lot of digital photography when traveling and I always back up my photos and videos to multiple hard drives and keep one in my luggage and one on me, just in case something happens to one of them. I always shoot over a terabyte of pictures and videos so a one terabyte drive isn't enough. Last trip I took two four terabyte drives and they are 3/4" thick and not comfortable to carry in my pocket. This "My Passport for Mac" is only 3/8" thick, half the thickness, and slightly narrower than the 4Tb one and also half the weight. That makes carrying it in a pocket much easier.
I like that this drive came with 2 USB 3.0 cables - one USB-A and one USB-C. Depending on which computer I take with me, I only need to take one cable. The 4Tb drive was USB-C only so I had to take an adapter with me and had to be careful I didn't lose it.
Although the drive comes with hardware encryption, I prefer not to use it as I am only using it for photos and I have a fear that if I encrypt it and something happens to the drive, I might have trouble recovering the photos. If you are using the drive for data files that are confidential, by all means use the encryption.
It is a spinning hard drive so It's not as fast as an SSD but a 2Tb SSD is way more expensive and at this point speed is not an issue.
I am using the drive on a Mac but I reformatted it because every time I wanted to copy a photo to the drive, it asked for my password. This way I can drag and drop photos quickly without having to enter my credentials. You can of course leave the drive the way it comes which is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and it will be fine. It's all a matter of how you like to work. It can be formatted for Windows as well but for now, I'm using it only on Macs.
It's so small and light, I think I'll carry it with me all the time.

Great modem if you don't need voice service
on August 3, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
I got tired of paying a monthly rental fee to my cable company so after years of paying I decided to get my own modem. This Arris Surfboard SBG8300 DOCSIS 3.1 modem has a lot of benefits to it that the one rented from my cable company doesn't have. It has a built in AC2350 Wave 2 WiFi router and 4 ethernet jacks. It can be configured using a web interface or an app called Arris Surfboard Manager available for iOS or Android to change the settings or I can just use my Amazon Echo by asking Alexa to control various settings. Although I have 400Mbps service and can usually get a download speed of 404Mbps and 39Mbps upload speed, I don't see any real speed increase over my previous modem. I have heard that my cable company will be upgrading the speed to 1Gbps hopefully in my area by the end of the year and that's when this modem will really shine as the back of the box says it can download at speeds up to 10+ Gbps. For now it's great for 4K video streaming and online gaming.
One thing I didn't think of when getting this modem is that I get my phone service through my cable provider as well and this modem does not have phone capability. Luckily I have my calls forwarded to my cell so for now I can still use the voice service. I have to decide if I still need a second "landline" in which case I might subscribe to another service like MagicJack or Ooma.
This seems to be the top of the line modem available right now and as long as I can save the rental fee, I'm happy with it.

Best Lock Ever
on May 27, 2019
Posted by: Cueball2000
from Clifton
When I bought my house 18 years ago, it came with a standard key lock. I replaced that with a biometric lock that opened with my fingerprint. Not great in the winter when wearing gloves or sweaty fingers in the summer. When it stopped working, the company replaced it with another one that now claimed to work with WiFi when you added a WiFi module. Unfortunately they never made one for that model. I then got the Yale/Nest lock which worked using an app on the iPhone but not with Siri or the Apple Watch so I could pull out the phone, swipe to open it, find the app and press it, then click on the little house icon and then when the next screen opened, I could press and hold for 3 seconds to finally open the door. What an ordeal. I found it simpler to just key in the combination on the touch screen of the lock to open the door.
This Yale Assure Lock solves the problem. It has an Apple Watch app that when tapped opens the lock and is secure since the Apple Watch is linked to the iPhone. It could work with my Amazon Echo but I choose not to link it to that since someone would be able to open the door from the outside just by screaming "Alexa Open the Door". It also works with the Google Assistant but Google was smart and only allows the locking of the door, not opening it. I set up the lock using the best feature ever, geofencing.
This lock uses WiFi to know when you and your phone have gone a certain distance from your home so the door remains locked but then uses Bluetooth to automatically unlock the door when you come back into Bluetooth range. I no longer have to mess with the app or the Apple Watch or be a primitive and use a key!
If I was away and needed to open the door for someone, I could always use the August app or the Apple Watch app to open the lock remotely.
The lock was simple to install since it was the same exact size as all previous locks. I watched the video that they prepared using the Built app that I had to install and that explained everything I needed to know about installing the lock and also a little module that connects adjacent to the lock to signal you if your door is left ajar after a set amount of time. My previous locks never had that feature so I needed information about that.
This smart lock has made my smart home even smarter.

The advanced lens provides superior image quality and a wider field of view, and allows you to track and zoom on moving objects with clarity. Hear and speak to visitors clearly with two-way audio. Receive notifications and view videos that tell you a package, person, vehicle or even an animal is detected, so you can take quick action like phone a friend, sound an alarm or call emergency services with included trial of Arlo Secure. Personalize what you get notified for and create custom activity zones to ensure you only get alerts for what matters, reducing those that are less important. Arlo Secure includes cloud recordings of video clips at 2K or lower resolution for 30 days. Renewal of an Arlo Secure plan is required to maintain Arlo Secure features, including cloud storage and activity zones.

Is the battery removable like the Arlo Pro2 or does the whole unit need to be charged?

The battery is removable but you would have to buy some kind of charger as there is no jack on the battery to charge it directly. So you really do have to take the whole camera in and plug it in to charge it or buy a solar panel for it.

Do these plug into a power source or are they battery operated?

There is no internal battery, it comes with a USB cable and power adapter that plugs into an electric outlet. I suppose you could use an external battery pack to plug the USB cable into but then you would have to charge the battery pack constantly.

Shoot pro-quality aerial footage with this DJI Mavic Air 2 drone. The three-axis gimbal stabilizes the 48.0MP camera for stunning photos and clear videos, while the 3500 mAh battery delivers dependable power for every flight. This DJI Mavic Air 2 drone features FocusTrack technology for advanced obstacle avoidance and target tracking.

This model doesn't seem to come with any sort of monitor. Is the monitor sold separately? How much is it?

You connect your iPhone or Android phone to the remote controller, it clamps onto the top of it and holds it securely. You run the DJI Fly app and you can see the video on the phone as you are flying and all the flight information is shown overlaid on the video. Clicking on various icons let you set all the parameters for the video (or stills) as well as other settings for the drone itself.

Its advanced fingerprint technology, touch screen numeric keypad and Bluetooth connectivity for easy smartphone app control provide flexible and customizable access options. This versatile U-tec Ultraloq smart lever lock also has a hidden keyhole for the three included mechanical keys.

This thing is huge. Should I safely assume this also replaces my door knob?

No, the lock has nothing to do with the door knob, it just replaces the lock/deadbolt. You still need a doorknob to open the door.

it is reversible? left or right hand door? Thank You

Yes the lock is reversible. When setting up the lock, it uses a method where it "hands" the lock to determine which direction the lock is facing.

Abundant storage space for all types of media and applications. The backup software lets you automatically save works in progress at your preferred intervals. Will I be able to format this for Mac and if I already have something saved on it will reformatting it negatively affect the saved information

When you reformat it for Mac, you will lose everything on it. It will wipe it clean so be sure to copy everything form the drive to your computer, reformat it and then copy everything back. If both your PC and Mac are recent computers, I would suggest you use the ExFAT format that can be read on both computers and has no file size limit like Fat32 does.
