A war movie about saving lives

There are plenty of battle scenes, body parts flying around after explosions. But this movie, based on actual events, isn't about the destruction of bodies, but about the heroism of saving the wounded in the WWII battle of Okinawa. Andrew Garfield plays Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector medic, who wants to go to war for the sole purpose of saving people. Doss's efforts, in real life, earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor.
A counter theme in this movie is the very touching love story between Doss and his new bride played by Teresa Palmer. Palmer and Garfield play an absolutely convincing and endearing young couple in difficult times.

Suspenseful and sometimes tragic series

Season 4 continues the suspense of how does an apparently average American married couple, who are really very effective and at times brutal Soviet Union era spies planted in America, keep their cover. It maintains that suspense well and adds to it the tension of their American teen age daughter realizing that her parents aren't just typical American parents.
The leading actors, Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, perform their roles superbly.

A meditation on deep emotional misery

Lee (Casey Affleck) is in as sad an emotional state as one can be and still function at all. While in this dark state, Lee becomes responsible for his 16 year old nephew, when Lee is barely responsible for himself.
For the movie viewer, seeing someone dealing with profound sadness isn't escapist entertainment, but it is a worthwhile insight.
Fans of classical music will enjoy its abundance in the sound track.

2 simple people in love dealing with racism

This movie is based on the true story of a working class interracial couple in the 1950s and 1960s in Virginia who want nothing more than to live their lives together in peace with their children and extended family. They can't do that because of Virginia laws at the time. This movie shows their personal and legal struggles with that racism, including their vindication by the US Supreme Court. The 2 lead actors are simply astoundingly great. This is one of the best movies on the evils of racism I've seen, with understated but truly powerful performances by all.

Great British series

As a British TV series, "Victoria" retains the British tradition of great acting and great visuals. It's not as subtle in character portrayal as "Downton Abbey," but it's close. It has more of a romantic flavor than "Downton Abbey" with the first season concerned mostly with the romantic inclinations of the young Queen Victoria, age 18 to about 21. Jenna Coleman as Victoria is youthful radiance. The second half of this first season portrays well the attraction, interaction and devotion between Victoria and her German husband Prince Albert. As a history lesson this first season shows how strong the German influence was on the British crown in the 1800s.

A Western with ambiguous heroes and villains

Set in the 1800s out West, Ethan Hawke, the new stranger in town, is the reluctant hero and John Travolta, the sheriff, is the reluctant villain. If it weren't for the sheriff's truly evil son, the Hawke and Travolta characters could probably get along. There's also a lonely girl falling for the stranger. So, you get the elements of a classic Western, with shoot outs and vulnerable women chasing strong men. But you also get to look at the emotions of some complex characters playing traditional roles, which makes this Western more interesting than most.

Comedy and tragedy all mixed together

When bad things happen to good people in a movie and the movie also has a large comic element, the movie gets called a "dark comedy." The Dressmaker is a mixture of the comic and the tragic, but it's not a dark comedy. It alternates between the very funny and the very sad, without any attempt to reconcile the two, just like real life.
Kate Winslet and Hugo Weaving are great in their roles, as are the rest of the cast.

Don't miss the interview with the real Snowden and with Stone and the cast of the movie in the special features. The real Snowden shows himself to be a truly selfless patriot who's getting a raw deal.

This is a great romanic comedy with a few twists that take it beyond the typical romantic comedy. It's more involved that the usual boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. It looks at what friendships -- romantic and platonic -- are about, and what being content in a relationship means.
No, this isn't a heavy philosophical movie. It is truly a comedy with plenty of funny nonsense from Rebel Wilson, but it's also more than the usual romantic comedy nonsense and is fun to watch.

The specifications for the 455Ms is 10 minutes continuous run time. While I haven't watched the clock while shredding, my sense is you'll get longer than 10 minutes if there are any pauses between page feeds. Again, I haven't put a stop watch to the cool down time, but I'm guessing it may be 15 minutes or longer.
