satisfying but not too loud mechanical board
on January 27, 2020

I inevitably accrue keyboards for various reasons. I have a solid, heavy, wireless keyboard for work, with nice heft so it won't slide around my desk. I have a multitude of gaming keyboards that I've amassed over the years.
The G513 is a wired keyboard, with a nice svelte feeling aluminum body. It's nice and matte, so it could be used for more professional settings if desired. The GX has 3 types of switches, linear, tactile, and traditional (clicky). I love clicky gaming keyboards because they definitely feel more traditional and durable, but sometimes you don't want the entire house having to listen to you frantically smash keys. Even more so if you're trying to use the keyboard for work typing.
That's why the GX Brown seems to me like a nice middle ground. Slightly clicky but mostly with a nice tactile bump to let you feel when you've hit the key. Not obnoxiously loud like the traditional clicky switches either.
As I get older, a sole gaming keyboard becomes less and less viable, so this lets me scratch my gaming itch with precision while still being usable for other uses outside of simply gaming. Well done.

powerful light vacuum
on January 1, 2020

from Fishers
Cordless vacuums have come a looong way.
Setup:
Not much to say, super simple, pieces click together. Done.
Ergonomics:
The weight is balanced near the handle, which makes the vacuum feel much lighter than advertised. Materials, while plastic, feel premium, and have a slick tactile feel to the unit.
Design:
The whole vacuum is streamlined to look sleek. The crevice attachments are housed on the charging base, which helps preserve the simple aesthetic, and also make sure there's no chance of a tool falling off while you're vacuuming.
My favorite function though, is that there is an additional battery pack included. The charging base while house and charge both batteries, so as long as you keep the extra battery in the unit, you shouldn't run into issues with losing juice. That being said, because the charging base/dock has the charging function, you should place the unit near a wall socket so you can actually, you know, charge.
The vacuum itself can be converted from cordless to handheld by attaching the cleaning head to the handle directly, which is nice for furniture, stairs, or on counters.
Effectiveness:
For such a small unit, the suction power is strong. We don't have any pets, so I can't speak to the ability to pull up pet hairs.

the app taught me i was brushing wrong
on December 24, 2019

from Fishers
I am a proud father of a toddler boy with zero cavities because I thought I was good at routine dental care. I had a cavity once every several years, but overall always told my teeth were in good health. Which surprises me because I drink metric tons of coffee daily.
Then I upgraded from a regular toothbrush to a smart toothbrush. The Oral B app (iOS for me) gives you a graphic representation of your teeth, and the default timer is set to 2 minutes (the dentist recommended time to brush). It cycles through zones, and if you brush too hard, which I rapidly discovered I do, the app flashes red and tells you very subtly to "REDUCE PRESSURE." You can adjust the time to brush, as well as target specific areas of your teeth.
The toothbrush itself uses Oral B's circular brush heads. I don't know if the advert that the circular brush heads are a better shape, but compared to a regular manual toothbrush, I feel like my teeth feel cleaner.
Can safely say I can't go back to using regular "dumb" toothbrushes. Handle is a comfortable weight to hold, and the included carrying case lets me take the brush with me on trips. Highly recommend.

dishwasher safe air fryer. what a world
on October 29, 2019

from Fishers
As my summary states, the useful elements - the pan and tray - are both dishwasher safe. You slide the tray out, pop the pan out, and place them in the dishwasher after use. Amazingly simple. The pan is nonstick, and so far I haven't had to scrub anything off.
The operation is also painfully simple. A timer knob which serves as the On/Off, and a dial for the temperature. One thing that might've made the timer switch even better would have been a built-in preheat timer, but it's simple enough to just twist the knob for an extra 3 minutes to preheat the fryer. The pan uses three rubber feet and friction to set the desired depth, which is probably the only thing I found annoying. Sometimes, when trying to adjust the pan, it would slide/tilt too easily, especially if I was trying to pull food off to make room for a second batch. A light pops on when the unit has reached the desired temp, and it dings when the timer runs out.
So simple. No or only trace amounts of oil needed to cook, and the results are wonderful. In our house, sweet potato fries, hash browns, and tater tots are a breeze and come out restaurant-crispy with almost zero prep time and minimal cook time. And, no grease/oil to jar up after you're done. That alone makes this worth it.

useful suite of internet protection
on October 29, 2019

from Fishers
Honestly, the VPN alone made this suite well worth it. Easy one-click access to secure VPN. Literally. So simple. The other included components include the typical array you'd expect from an internet security bundle, like spyware screening, virus protection, computer tune-up (fixes junk files, broken file registries, etc) to make things run smoother, and a secure web browser. UI is clean, easy to maneuver, and not too many layers of menus to get to the function you want to access. This pack includes access for 5 devices, so it's enough for my entire household.

best wireless mouse
on October 29, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
Things just work flawlessly, the sculpted shape of the mouse is perfectly ergonomic. The buttons are reprogrammable via the Logitech app, but more importantly, the buttons are located exactly where you would expect. The magwheel serves as the scrollwheel, and it's fantastic. There's a button on the back of the mouse that allows you to switch between free scroll and ratcheted scrolling, and it is completely silent. Just enough friction to not feel like it's spinning out of control even when on free-scroll mode. As mentioned on my keyboard review of the MX series, the MX peripherals can be mapped to a single USB dongle, meaning you don't need to carry a separate sensor for each peripheral. And, the dongle itself is flat and unobtrusive, so you can just leave it plugged in even on a laptop.
Wireless mouse without lag, I can play my games, do my work, and still feel comfortable doing both. Highly recommend.

easy set up, solid keys
on October 27, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
Design: standard keyboard layout with the expected shortcut buttons and function buttons. Matte black in color, and has a smooth texture which feels nice to the touch. Keys have molded indents which feel natural. Furthermore, metal build gives the whole keyboard some nice heft and solid feel. No flex or give in the board at all
Typing: this was unexpected. When testing the depth of the keystrokes, it felt like the mechanism was too shallow. Not as much travel as I'd gotten used to from my usual keyboard, which has mechanical keys. No click. But that's the point, this keyboard isn't meant to be a clicky gaming mechanical keyboard, it's sleek and has silent keys. Seriously, zero noise.
Setup: has a small dongle to plug into your USB slot, but a nice feature is you can configure mutliple logitech devices to the same dongle, saving USB slots
Overall: does exactly what it's designed to be, quite well. I still think the key switches could have a few mm of more travel to feel more traditional, but I didn't notice any errors over my normal while typing.

Quiet air purifier for an apartment
on September 23, 2019
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
Aesthetics: white tower with optional casters that attach via rails on the bottom of the unit. The controls are on the top face of the unit, with an easy to read screen. Looks like what you'd expect from a standalone A/C unit or such, no frills
Functions: 6 fan speeds from 40-300 cfm, which you adjust with a single button. The "up" arrow will increase the fan speed in increments up to 6, then cycle back to 1 if you continue pressing the button. Provided remote control lets you control the unit without having to walk across the room, which is nice.
Capability: Unable to formally measure the particles in the air, but subjectively, I have noticed less sneezing and less sniffling with the unit on. The sound is also pretty quiet at the lower levels (~up to level 3). At the highest fan speed of 6, which is 300 cfm, it is louder than our white noise machine for the baby room, but that's a necessary evil in order to pump enough airflow to cycle that amount of air.
Ease of use: a big factor that kept me from getting an air purifier before this was that the filters tended to be pretty difficult to access or replace. Or, like a humidifier, you had to replace the filters so frequently it just wasn't cost effective. The IQAir actually uses a slide-out tray design which makes accessing and checking the filters a breeze. Haven't had the purifier nearly long enough to test the max life of the filters yet
Summary: very happy with this purifier, and the thoughtfulness of the design becomes very apparent with use. A built-in handle, removable casters for movement, and slide-out trays for each filter. Fantastic

fine hardware

The Pixel Slate is foremost a tablet, but its innards make all the difference. The cheapest entry level will get you a celeron, but honestly, that chip is so old it might as well be a dinosaur in tech years. The m3 isn't much better, and my suspicions seem to be correct based on other reviews I've read. The i5 is usually the sweetspot for buying computers, as the i7 will get you the most horsepower but commands the price when purchasing stock systems.
Screen: one word - beautiful. Just like with cameras and the inane MP war, pixel resolution doesn't really mean nearly as much as the actual physical view. This screen is crisp. Viewing angles are good enough for my family to watch videos together.
Brightness: depends sharply on the setting, unfortunately. Indoors it's fantastic. Outdoors, there's a pretty harsh glare and the brightness of the screen isn't high enough to be used clearly in bright sunlight.
Sound: thank god. I get that placing speakers rearward or even laterally helps save mm of width in the device, but for tablets, razor-thin doesn't even make sense from an ergonomic perspective. The speakers on the Pixel Slate are front facing and sound excellent. No tinny treble, and strong enough to play stuff on Netflix without making me reach for my headphones reflexively.
Bezels: might not matter to some, but I often use tablets in handheld mode, rather than sitting up in a stand. Same as with the device thickness mentioned above, but I don't want super thin bezels because then my fingers will touch the viewing area. The bezels here are just thick enough to feel comfortable holding the tablet without being so chunky they look outdated
Chrome: the real deal desktop Chrome, not lite or mobile. Which means multiple tabs. Rearrangeable tabs. Bookmarks. And the slew of Chrome apps. Makes qualify of life nice by not sacrificing productivity.
Aesthetics: covered most aspects, but the color hue is "midnight blue" which sets it apart from the all black traditional getups. Nice subtle sheen which looks elegant, for lack of a better descriptor. Looks professional enough for me to carry around the office, but not harsh and overly industrialized. Soft, rounded corners. Well thought out.

needs a sturdier backbone
on September 5, 2019

As noted in my other Pixel family reviews, my main driver is a Surface Pro with keyboard and pen. The pixel keyboard uses magnets to attach the pixel slate, and it snaps on intuitively. There's a clever origami folding section that uses magnets to maintain position, allowing you to set the angle of the pixel slate while in laptop mode. Very clever, and no awkward forced in-between angles since you can just simply slide the magnets up or down. The keys are round, which did take me a little getting used to. There's more travel to the keys than [I] you first expect, so the "feel" of typing actually does work quite nicely. The main issue I have with this keyboard is the exact same issue I have with my Surface keyboard: it's too flimsy. It works and looks great on a desk or flat surface, but when I try to use it in my lap, it feels precarious at best. I've found a setup that works, but it never feels as natural or easy as using it on a flat surface. Other than that, though, as above, I like the keyboard a lot.
