lightning fast with self-adjusting scroll wheel

At this point, Razer has been in the game long enough where there are few basic assumptions I make, and Razer always fulfills:
1. the ergonomics are near perfect
2. performs really crisply in games
3. lights. lots of lights. with programmability using the Razer Synapse software
So, with that out of the way, what sets the Basilisk ver.3 apart from my other Razers (Adder, Death Adder, Mamba, Naga, etc)? Well, for one, there's no wireless option on the V3. That's probably the only negative I could come up with for the Basilisk V3. I never used the previous versions of the Basilisk, but this current iteration has a small square button below the 2 thumb buttons that slows the mouse sensitivity down - i.e. sniping mode. Worked really well in Overwatch. The button isn't removable, which means less chance of me bumping it off and losing it forever in my bag.
The sets-this-apart feature is definitely the scroll wheel. As I alluded to, I've got a lot of Razer peripherals, mice included. They all perform beautifully. Other than the Naga which is set up for MMO games, the rest all feel and fit pretty much the same in my hand. Basilisk is no different. So what's unique? The scroll wheel. It has a nice tactile scroll at slow speeds, but if you spin the wheel faster, the mouse automatically shifts to continuous mode, which allows for smooth scrolling through long webpages, excel rows, etc. Slow down, and the mouse switches back to the tactile mode. You can adjust the bar at which the mode switches, but for me, the default switch worked just fine. Which was great, because I could get in some game time, then go back to pivot tables in Excel for work without having to mess with a bunch of settings. This mouse did a great job covering both tasks.

optical switch, quieter, but not as crisp keys
on October 10, 2021

If you're looking at a keyboard at this price point, I'm going to assume you are already aware of the company Razer and their overall products.
To summarize, Razer is probably the most well-known gaming peripheral company, and their reputation is backed by a strong consistent showing of quality products.
This Huntsman V2 is their minimized version with the 10 num pad. As some gamers for ergonomics will prefer to use a dedicated num pad that can be placed. So, to start off, the keyboard is probably a lot smaller than you're used to seeing for full size keyboards.
The 8000Hz refresh means the keyboard is checking for input at a ridiculous rate of 8000 times/sec. That pretty much means that your key clicks will be logged instantly, meaning less latency. Most gaming keyboards offer 4000Hz. So, to be honest, I didn't notice a difference from my other gaming keyboard, but I also don't play at an international competitive level.
The keys. I'm torn. I love mechanical keyboards, but sometimes that mechanical clicking can be really really loud. The V2 uses silicon dampeners to combat this. Effective at reducing noise. But the tradeoff is that the keypress feels "mushy" for lack of a better term. Definitely lose that crisp click/clack. So it does what it was intended, but I guess I'm not sure that I'm completely happy with the tradeoff. This is highly subjective, so depends on your preference, whether you prefer the tactile click with louder noise, or a softer press while losing the click.
The Razer software lets you control macros, color schemes on the lighting, lighting patterns, etc. It's really really robust.
As stated, the functionality is amazing, and in a very small footprint. The decision to be made is whether you want the mechanical click or a quieter press with softer travel.

Smart dumbbells that look normal
on October 1, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
One of my first purchases when the lockdowns started was a set of B*wflex adjustable dumbbells, because I needed weights to keep my workouts going at home. They're probably the most well known, well recognized adjustable sets on the market, and for good reason. However, the connectors are unfortunately plastic, so if you tend to drop your weights on the ground after sets, they're prone to failure. Also, when you look at the rack, they scream "adjustable dumbbells" because the weight plates stick out like ridges of a pinecone unless you're maxed out.
The Jaxjox weights appear (pun intended) to be the future.
Looks: The weight plates are full circular, and they attach flatly when you increase weights. So there's no gaps between the plates. This allows the weight to be even, but also looks more solid during use. So basically, when sitting next to regular old dumbbells, you won't be able to tell a difference. Also, in line with other adjustable weights, they take up very very minimal footprint in my garage gym.
Adjustability: I'm mixed here. Part of the benefit of being fully manual is there are less parts to break. No circuitry to fail. My other brand dumbbells are dumb dumbbells, no electronics, so even if the power is out or whatnot, it doesn't affect use. With that being said, the Jaxjox weights adjust at the push of a button. You dial in the weight, and they automatically adjust. Super fast and easy.
App: wow. looks super sleek. you select your gender, weight, height, and fitness goals, and the app logs your progress. Multiple workouts to select from, and syncs to your weights via bluetooth.
Overall: super sleek space-saving weight set that looks like a regular dumbbell. The app does require a "premium" subscription to access the full features, but even the basic app is good enough for monitoring your progress.

32in 4k curved monitor great for gaming
on September 23, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
This monitor is BIG. My desk isn't big enough to support using 2 monitors with this as part of the setup, but with 32 in and the curved screen, I actually haven't noticed a very big reduction in my workflow.
Unlike most monitors/peripherals, the HDMI and displayport cables are included in the box, which made setup a breeze.
165Hz refresh rate is blazing fast for gaming, and running RE Village and Biomutant are absolutely beautiful. The curve gives a natural view perspective and helped with immersion.
The only con I could find with this monitor for my needs is the input. The joystick toggle is actually located on the back of the monitor, which I'm assuming is because the thin bezels couldn't support placement of a toggle. However, given the size of the monitor, with my desk being the in the corner of the office, it's not the easiest to access the buttons. Thankfully the power button at least is readily accessible.

Beautiful machine beautiful espresso
on September 20, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
I love coffee. Not the syrup laden concoctions you see people slugging around, but real coffee.
I have drip machines and also pour overs for when I want just a single cup.
So that’s just saying I can tell the difference between coffee machines.
The Dinamica+ is amazing. Combined grinder makes it so convenient to get fresh brews. Separate tank for milk is easily removed and even better, easily cleaned. Touch menu is clear and user friendly.
The coffee. One word. Beautiful. You have to set the grind level appropriately for what you’re brewing, but once you dial it in - watch the beautiful crema layer on top. Coffee. Espresso. Cold brew. Simply beautiful.
The only downside I can nitpick with this machine is the volume. If you want to make a big carafe or tumbler of coffee the nozzle is low so you can’t easily fit a bigger container.
That being said, this machine is more for espresso so not really designed for high volume output.
Worth the investment.

Remote learning machine
on September 8, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
Like many I had assumed that life would return to normal, especially for my kiddo. However, due to current events, our kid’s school still offers remote learning.
The Geobook is a nice, affordable machine that I don’t feel nervous about letting my little one use. The screen is 768p, so not 4K, but combined with the 2mp webcam, is plenty sharp to conduct his remote learning sessions.
4gb RAM is enough to run Roblox and Minecraft without any hiccups. Again, for the screen size, there wouldn’t be much noticeable improvement even going denser than 768p, and 64gb memory is spacious enough for daily use.
For the price point, the Geobook 120 checks off all the necessary boxes to hit a good deal. Performance is plenty enough for a child, and is working great. My kid really loves being a big boy with his own laptop, and I’m not nervous about him using a more expensive machine.

Another win from arlo
on August 15, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
At this point every company seems to want in on the home security pie. To skip to the summary, I’d recommend picking one ecosystem and just sticking to it.
For us, we’ve used Arlo Pros from the 2nd gen on, so we’re pretty invested. That being said, we initially chose Arlo because the app is easy to navigate, the video quality is solid, and the battery life was solid. The Essential Indoor is wired, which makes sense since it’s not IP rated nor designed to be used outside. I don’t want to have to pop the camera off every few weeks to exchange the battery.
The camera synced seamlessly with our app and joined the group. Everything works as advertised. Easy.

Updated Polaroid for the new crowd
on August 6, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
I grew up with a black boxy Polaroid 600, and absolutely loved it. The updated body of the Now is a little more ergonomic than the vintage Polaroids. The film is smaller than the OG films but they were able to maintain that retro Polaroid look to the film.
Gave it to my kid to learn to actually compose shots instead of snapping Willy nilly, and he’s blown away by the instant production of a picture.
Great memories updated for a new generation. Love it.

lightweight germ busting vacuum
on July 2, 2021
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
Canister vacuums appear to have fallen out of favor, as all I see advertised are lightweight stick-type vacuums.
Compared to the stick vacuums I had before, the Raycop omni air is lightyears different. The battery lasts long enough that I'm able to literally vacuum our entire house including the stairs without running out of juice. The UV light kills germs, so maybe it's overkill, but it gives peace of mind if the boys come tracking a bunch of stuff in their shoes. The white color looks nice and clean, and it looks like high end equipment sitting by the side of our entryway. It definitely doesn't mess up the aesthetic.
Everything a vacuum needs to do, with the added benefit of on-board germ killing. Awesome.

welcome to the future
on June 28, 2021
Posted by: codeblue

Smart this and that are so commonly advertised now I kind of got numb. However, I ended up giving it a try and I'm a convert. The Level looks like a regular lock, meaning no forced futuristic aesthetic that screams "hack me!" Installs just like any door lock, and feels solid. But the smart capability means once you set up the lock on the app, you can use your key, the app, or just the touch of your finger, to lock/unlock. Extremely convenient and you can create guest passes if you've got family/friends coming over so that you don't have to leave a physical key floating around.
