amazing, solid, grill

Literally, it's solid. Die-cast aluminum construction provides a nice heft. The grill lid looks pretty compact, and it is. The grill came in two separate boxes, with the main grill + accessories such as flat cast iron plates, and the legs + trays in another box. The grill can be used as a portable grill if you remove/unattach the silver legs.
The legs themselves have a tilt to roll design, with castors on two legs only. This helps keep the grill from rolling around when set up, but it does mean you have to partially lift the solid aluminum body.
The Force uses propane, but we had a natural gas line pre-set in our backyard, so I bought a separate Heston natural gas conversion kit. Very easy to install, but I did read the instructions prior to attempting.
Once all set, the grill sits firmly, no wobble. The knobs feel premium, which should be expected at this price point. Lighting was easy given it was gas, and the grill only took a few minutes to reach the set temp.
Also, Everdure included a cover which is nice. I keep the grill on my back patio, but there have been some strong storms in my area, and even though the aluminum is supposed to never rust, I'd rather not leave such an expensive and nice-looking grill just sitting exposed.

turn your surface into a laptop
on December 24, 2020

I bought the nice, alcantara surface keyboard when I purchased my surface pro 6. The cover feels nice, the keys are responsive, and the form factor kept my surface sleek as designed. It's perfect for when I need to do light typing. However, with COVID, working more from home, I don't need the portability as much. Trying to use the surface keyboard on a sofa, for instance, isn't quite as nice because the surface keyboard flexes and doesn't maintain its shape.
The Brydge keyboard fills that need perfectly. Backlit keys, touchpad, and the hinge is nice and smooth. The hinge works with silicon "feet" that you slide the surface into. Stays solidly in place even after I shook it to try it out. Didn't leave any scratches on the screen. The hinge also lets me put the surface into any angle easily.
The touchpad does jump at times, but it's still better than the touchpad I've felt on HP or other competing keyboards. It's not as nice as a mouse, but it's functional and doesn't impede my workflow.
The obvious knock against the Brydge would be that with the added heft and depth of the keyboard, you've taken your portable Surface and basically converted it to a typical laptop. However, if you're wanting a more laptop-like experience with your Surface Pro without shelling out for another laptop, then this performs excellently.

modular pro-style controller
on November 22, 2020
Posted by: codeblue

The wired nature of this controller initially caught me off guard, as it seems the big push is for wireless everything - wireless earbuds, wireless peripherals, etc.
Form: the silhouette looks pretty indistinguishable from the typical XBox-style controller to me, which may or may not be a good thing. I'm personally partial to the DualShock controller feels, so XBox controllers typically feel a bit big to me in the hand. That being said, it's not uncomfortable to use during long sessions.
Modularity: this is one of the big advertised points of the eSwap Pro X. Three drop in bays 2 left and bottom right allow you to switch around the sticks and/or D-pad. The face buttons, XYAB, are fixed and can't be moved from the upper right of the face. I set mine up to mimic my DualShocks, in that the Dpad is in the upper left nearest my thumb, and the sticks are at the bottom of the controller.
Input: input galore. Frankly, with the ability to map all. the. buttons. it can be a bit overwhelming. Beyond the typical buttons found on controllers, there are additional buttons on the rear of the controller, which you can map.
The triggers can be adjusted to shallower vs deeper pulls, so if you're into shooters, making the travel shorter can mean easier shots.
Overall, I actually really appreciated the wired nature after all. No worrying about battery packs, whether I'm going to lose connection during a game due to low power, etc. The buttons are all nice and with tactile clicks, and rated for 5 million clicks which is absurdly long.
I don't have an Xbox X, so can't speak to the XBox portion, but it works fantastically on my PC for platformers. For shooters, honestly, why would you go backwards and play controller when you have mouse/keyboard... highly recommend.

all-day comfort and good sound
on November 11, 2020

from San Antonio
I'm new to bone conduction sets, so this is a fresh perspective. With the work from home switch, I've tried to find a decent headset to take calls and conference for the day. Right now, I'm literally looking at 4 headsets all piled on my workdesk. The reason is, I've exclusively been using the AfterShokz set ever since I got it.
Because there doesn't need to be big magnets to push sound, the overall form is really really small and light. The mic arm flips up and down to adjust, and the sound quality is great.
If you're trying to get audiophile quality sound from music, this isn't the right set. But for me, it's tangle free being wireless, and the way it sits around your head, as opposed to a conventional headset on top means no sweaty scalp and no imprint in my hair after I'm done with long Zoom calls.
If you too are working from home and need a nice comfortable communications-oriented headset, this is the one for you.

perfect for a family
on October 26, 2020

I'm assuming with COVID lockdowns and things being closed for a while, home cooking appliances have been moving up in priority. We've tried a few air fryers in our home, but with 2 boys, having to wait for 4-5 batches to cook was excruciating.
The Oster is amazing. Stainless steel exterior so it looks nice sitting on our counter in the kitchen, and nice solid dials. Touchscreens look svelte, but not worth the constant wiping off grease/fingerprints.
It's a big unit compared to our other air fryers, but we love it. The big interior chamber allows for air to circulate, so we actually don't even have to flip chicken wings or steaks halfway through. Glass door allows you to see inside to confirm if food looks cooked. Nice slide-out pan at the bottom to catch grease to make cleanup nice and easy.
We put a sheet of foil over the actual cooking tray underneath the basket, and it's made cleaning even easier. And with the size, we only have to make 2 batches instead of 4-5.
Can't recommend this enough for bigger families or big eaters.

The fryer's space saving basket is removable and dishwasher safe for easy clean-up, so can spend more time eating than cooking! 1700 Watts/120 Volts - RJ38-SQSS-8T NEW

good size for small family

Air fryers seem to be the new "it" item for every kitchen. Chefman makes a product that looks sleek and fits in in our modern kitchen. The face is smooth and clean, with touch controls. The tray is as expected, with a large handle. The only negative about this unit is the actual basket that goes inside the tray. The rubber feet slide off too easily, so I can see them getting lost in the sink. Otherwise, food cooks easily and everything is really easy to clean.

great sound, not so great fit for me
on September 6, 2020

The punchline: Bose-quality sound, not so great as sunglasses for my face
The sunglasses are in a pretty traditional rectangular nylon frame, black, so you can wear them with pretty much any outfit. Dressed up or casual. The speakers are hidden inside the arms of the sunglasses, so they're taller, but not wide, so they don't stick out the sides of your face. Lenses are polarized. Unfortunately, for my medium-sized face, the frames are just too large. The one-size only option left a lot to be desired, as the frames continuously slide down my nose because the bridge is too wide. Which is unfortunate, because the sound is actually really nice. The speakers point downward so they aim toward your ears. I had my wife wear them and even standing only a few feet away, I couldn't hear the music playing.
These would be great for commuting on a bus or hanging out at a beach/park, but I really hope they offer different sizing options for their frames. Would be 5/5 stars if only the sunglasses fit me well.

Small, convenient, and easy to use

With covid, personal grooming may have taken a hit. However, for when the world will eventually return to normal, this tool is great. The circular attachment makes trimming the ol nose hairs simple and quick. Didn’t notice any pulling. Can use the other attachments to fine tune your grooming needs or just use the angled blade. Works as advertised, can’t ask for more.

versatile little blender
on July 9, 2020

Nice flat blade design is ideal for the stated purpose of blending soups or smoothies. Comes with the blender attachment, a plastic frame you can clip on to protect the pan should you choose to directly blend, and a measuring cup that you can blend in.
The flat design of the head means easy clean-up, since there's not a big pocket of space behind the blades where food can get stuck. The handle is nice and light, and the cordless nature means no worrying about tangling the cord over your mixing bowl or whatnot.
My wife has been using this multiple times a day to blend baby food for our little one, and it's been great.

4k home security system
on June 16, 2020
Posted by: codeblue
from Fishers
As we moved into a new construction home, we were in the market for a home security system. We compared prices and features for the typical big companies, home cams like Arlo etc, and then dedicated security surveillance systems like the Lorex. There are fundamental differences (pros/cons) between each system, but mainly, the monitored services you pay a monthly fee and someone is checking your system. That seems to me the most secure/safe option, if you want the highest level of home security. The other systems typically rely on sending notifications to your devices, so theoretically, if you're asleep at night and have your phone silenced, you may not notice your camera sending you an urgent notification about movement. That being said, I ultimately decided to opt for a system that's not professionally monitored.
The Lorex has 4k image quality, and daylight image quality is impressive. Night samples are above average compared to the other camera systems I compared them to. I can't speak to the ease or difficulty of installation, as we hired someone to do it, but reading up, it doesn't seem prohibitively difficult if you were really trying to save some money. 2TB stoarge is included, and I set it to continuously record. So after 2TB is used up, it'll loop and record over the data. You can add an additional storage unit, but I haven't done so yet.
The system does seem to be a bit sensitive, so they're erring on the side of being more secure, however, it means you get quite a few false alarms on your notifications. Hopefully with a software update, they can adjust their algorithms.
Overall, as long as you understand the inherent limitations of an NVR system, i.e. nobody's going to be automatically calling emergency services for you if it detects suspicious activity - then this system is fantastic and solidly built.
