The Roomba 600 series robot vacuum is a great way to begin cleaning your home smarter. It learns your cleaning habits and then offers up custom cleaning schedules—taking on daily dirt, dust, and debris from carpets and hard floors. It even has an edge-sweeping brush to get into corners and along edges. Google Assistant and Alexa compatibility let you start a cleaning session with just your voice, or simply use the iRobot Home App. When your area’s pollen count is high or during pet shedding season, the Roomba 600 series robot vacuum can even suggest extra cleanings —to help keep your floors clean every day of the year. *(Alexa and all related logos are trademarks of Amazon.com or its affiliates. quiet efficient vacuum buddy

iRobot basically pioneered the robot vacuum space, and we've always wanted to get one.
Compared to our other robot vacs from other big name companies, the Roomba is significantly quieter. We keep our other robot vacuums upstairs, and the noise will cause our infant to start crying and yelling, but he doesn't mind the Roomba at all.
The Roomba maps itself around our first floor very well, and doesn't miss any spots. The spinning brush even manages to catch a lot of the corners of our rooms that we'd have to manually vacuum after our other vacs swept by in the past.
Can't speak about Google Assistant compatibility, but it integrated seamlessly into Alexa along with our other Alexa-enabled devices. The higher tier Roombas have an automatically emptying dust bin, that you don't have to empty as frequently, but that's ok. There's construction on new homes on both sides of our house, so a lot of dust/debris gets kicked up in the air. Roomba has been doing a great job keeping our main floor nice and clean.
Can't recommend enough, from the OG of robot vacuum companies.

good juicer... messy cleanup
on April 9, 2021

I love Ninja products, and they're pretty reliably awesome. So I had pretty high expectations for this juicer.
The juicer comes with different sieve pieces that allow for no pulp, low, mid, and high pulp from the juicer. A spiral corkscrew mechanism pushes the pulp into the bin while the juice flows out of the spigot into the juice cup.
All the pieces are labeled as being dishwasher safe, but I'm just not sure about potentially ruining the various pieces. That being said, we probably make things a bit more difficult for ourselves by not just tossing everything in the dishwasher after we're through. Pulp pieces will sometimes slide into the corkscrew, working its way into the tube of the juicer. The seal just isn't strong enough to prevent all food from working its way into the channel.
Orange juice and carrot juice are staples in our house these days, and they work well. And then we can give the pulp for baking. So the byproducts can even be used. But for us, the main sticking point is the sheer number of pieces that have to be cleaned after each use.
TL;DR: If you're ok just throwing everything into the dishwasher after every use, then this will be another Ninja slam dunk. If you're a handwashing-type, then this machine may give you stress.

monster laptop
on March 3, 2021

Punchline up front: big heavy laptop that can play Cyberpunk on medium ray tracing at 60 fps.
Typing: Full-size keyboard with decent key travel. It's not as shallow as the Apple butterfly keys (which is a good thing), but it's also not as deep as a Thinkpad. Having the real estate, there's also a full size num pad
Gaming: The G7 is a gaming laptop, but really, it's a desktop with a screen attached. It weighs 6.8 lbs, but in real world talk, my bag feels HEAVY when the laptop and the equally large power brick are inside. That being said, the SSD and 2070 card load up Cyberpunk even faster than my desktop which as an AMD Ryzen chip in it. I can easily play on medium ray tracing with no hiccups.
Battery life: this is where the G7 loses some points with me. All that power comes at a heavy price, as the batteries were easily dying in 4-5 hours when playing games. Then again, with the size/weight of this system, I can't imagine it being toted around to a coffee shop for some light browsing, so it serves its purpose
Ports: There are ports galore. SD, thunderbolt 3, HDMI, mini display. I don't need to use a dongle because there are enough ports for my needs
Overall: if you're looking for a gaming laptop that can handle the latest games well, then this is it. The screen is 1080 but can play 4K if you use the HDMI output. 17 in screen with good color representation, so photoshop/lightroom worked well. I actually preferred using this for work over my Surface because having a full size keyboard and 17in screen was much more comfortable for me as long as I didn't need to be moving around a lot.

quiet, automated, and looks sleek

Living in south texas, allergies have been killing me. Especially with construction happening in our neighborhood digging up extra dirt/dust, I've noticed my allergies have been roaring in full force to the point I'm more miserable inside my own home than at work. The biggest factor for me was being able to find an air purifier able to cover the sq ft, but for my wife, it had to be a unit that didn't look terrible in our brand new home with a nice open concept living space.
Enter the Aeris. It genuinely looks nice sitting in the corner of our den, with a nice titanium/graphite-color matte finish. Rolls easily on castors, and you can set the unit to automatically adjust air flow based on air quality.
I've not been needing to use as much sinus rinses at home ever since turning it on, so I can say it definitely works for my needs.

big multifunction air fryer for a family
on February 11, 2021

5.8 qt means I can cook 3 steaks in one batch, a big basket of sweet potato fries, or 6-8 jumbo chicken drumsticks. As COVID has persisted, we've been slowly amassing more and more kitchen appliances, partly because I finally started learning how to cook.
The lid opens vertically, which is my only gripe. With the large size of the cooking basket, the lid by necessity has to open large. This means I can't just keep the air fryer on our counter top because the cabinets prevent the lid from opening all the way. A minor issue, as I can just slide it forward or put it on the island, but since I'm writing a review, it's my honest assessment. Other than that, I love everything else. The matte finish doesn't pick up fingerprints, and the included cooking accessories are all quite useful. There's the typical chromed air fryer basket, but also a grill plate insert, and a steam rack.
With the size of the cooking basket, the setup leaves a little room between the bottom of the air fryer basket and the actual cooking basket, which means I didn't have to flip my food. I still do, especially with chicken, just to make absolutely sure it's as crisped as possible, but with steaks I didn't have to flip at all and they turned out superb.
This has easily replaced my other air fryers with similar features or capabilities, solely because it's big enough that it minimizes having to cook several batches to feed the family.

Not just for pets works for toddler parents too

We put hardwood flooring in our main areas, but the rest of the house has carpet flooring. With stairs with a small landing, lugging a heavy vacuum can, and will be, frustrating.
With two boys (literally) running all over the house, tracking dirt from outside, spilling food and snacks, we wanted to get a carpet cleaner at home so we wouldn’t have to pay every time.
The Bissell is light, marketed at 12 lbs, but subjectively, not imposing to carry up the stairs. It stands upright like a typical upright vacuum, and it has a fairly small footprint so it doesn’t take up our entire closet.
Yo can see the solution and stuff being cleaned out of the carpets being sucked up in the clear window which is nicely satisfying.
It works well, and it’s light enough to carry up and down the stairs as needed.

amazing, solid, grill
on January 1, 2021

Literally, it's solid. Die-cast aluminum construction provides a nice heft. The grill lid looks pretty compact, and it is. The grill came in two separate boxes, with the main grill + accessories such as flat cast iron plates, and the legs + trays in another box. The grill can be used as a portable grill if you remove/unattach the silver legs.
The legs themselves have a tilt to roll design, with castors on two legs only. This helps keep the grill from rolling around when set up, but it does mean you have to partially lift the solid aluminum body.
The Force uses propane, but we had a natural gas line pre-set in our backyard, so I bought a separate Heston natural gas conversion kit. Very easy to install, but I did read the instructions prior to attempting.
Once all set, the grill sits firmly, no wobble. The knobs feel premium, which should be expected at this price point. Lighting was easy given it was gas, and the grill only took a few minutes to reach the set temp.
Also, Everdure included a cover which is nice. I keep the grill on my back patio, but there have been some strong storms in my area, and even though the aluminum is supposed to never rust, I'd rather not leave such an expensive and nice-looking grill just sitting exposed.

turn your surface into a laptop
on December 24, 2020
Posted by: codeblue

I bought the nice, alcantara surface keyboard when I purchased my surface pro 6. The cover feels nice, the keys are responsive, and the form factor kept my surface sleek as designed. It's perfect for when I need to do light typing. However, with COVID, working more from home, I don't need the portability as much. Trying to use the surface keyboard on a sofa, for instance, isn't quite as nice because the surface keyboard flexes and doesn't maintain its shape.
The Brydge keyboard fills that need perfectly. Backlit keys, touchpad, and the hinge is nice and smooth. The hinge works with silicon "feet" that you slide the surface into. Stays solidly in place even after I shook it to try it out. Didn't leave any scratches on the screen. The hinge also lets me put the surface into any angle easily.
The touchpad does jump at times, but it's still better than the touchpad I've felt on HP or other competing keyboards. It's not as nice as a mouse, but it's functional and doesn't impede my workflow.
The obvious knock against the Brydge would be that with the added heft and depth of the keyboard, you've taken your portable Surface and basically converted it to a typical laptop. However, if you're wanting a more laptop-like experience with your Surface Pro without shelling out for another laptop, then this performs excellently.

modular pro-style controller
on November 22, 2020
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
The wired nature of this controller initially caught me off guard, as it seems the big push is for wireless everything - wireless earbuds, wireless peripherals, etc.
Form: the silhouette looks pretty indistinguishable from the typical XBox-style controller to me, which may or may not be a good thing. I'm personally partial to the DualShock controller feels, so XBox controllers typically feel a bit big to me in the hand. That being said, it's not uncomfortable to use during long sessions.
Modularity: this is one of the big advertised points of the eSwap Pro X. Three drop in bays 2 left and bottom right allow you to switch around the sticks and/or D-pad. The face buttons, XYAB, are fixed and can't be moved from the upper right of the face. I set mine up to mimic my DualShocks, in that the Dpad is in the upper left nearest my thumb, and the sticks are at the bottom of the controller.
Input: input galore. Frankly, with the ability to map all. the. buttons. it can be a bit overwhelming. Beyond the typical buttons found on controllers, there are additional buttons on the rear of the controller, which you can map.
The triggers can be adjusted to shallower vs deeper pulls, so if you're into shooters, making the travel shorter can mean easier shots.
Overall, I actually really appreciated the wired nature after all. No worrying about battery packs, whether I'm going to lose connection during a game due to low power, etc. The buttons are all nice and with tactile clicks, and rated for 5 million clicks which is absurdly long.
I don't have an Xbox X, so can't speak to the XBox portion, but it works fantastically on my PC for platformers. For shooters, honestly, why would you go backwards and play controller when you have mouse/keyboard... highly recommend.

all-day comfort and good sound
on November 11, 2020
Posted by: codeblue
from San Antonio
I'm new to bone conduction sets, so this is a fresh perspective. With the work from home switch, I've tried to find a decent headset to take calls and conference for the day. Right now, I'm literally looking at 4 headsets all piled on my workdesk. The reason is, I've exclusively been using the AfterShokz set ever since I got it.
Because there doesn't need to be big magnets to push sound, the overall form is really really small and light. The mic arm flips up and down to adjust, and the sound quality is great.
If you're trying to get audiophile quality sound from music, this isn't the right set. But for me, it's tangle free being wireless, and the way it sits around your head, as opposed to a conventional headset on top means no sweaty scalp and no imprint in my hair after I'm done with long Zoom calls.
If you too are working from home and need a nice comfortable communications-oriented headset, this is the one for you.
