great ultrathin as long as you don't need a dGPU
on September 1, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
Initial feel: very light, and chassis feels cool and slightly matte. The material is stated to be a new mix of ceramic and aluminum, and it feels exactly how you'd imagine. Subtle white/silver highlights on the cover that are tasteful without trying too hard. There was a slight flex in the keyboard when using on my lap, but not to the point of being concerning.
Screen: solid, no wobble. Big beautiful OLED screen with touch, and is clearly the star of the show on this laptop. 120 Hz, but brightness wasn't stellar at around 357 nits. Which means it was perfectly fine for working at home, but trying to use it on a sunny day outside, even under the patio, the screen was a bit difficult to see.
Battery life: got me through a full work day of using heavy Word and Excel. Running a Youtube loop test, the battery lasted a little over 9 hours.
Ports: !!! Everything. 2 USB-C, full size HDMI, 3.5 mm headphone jack, USB-A, and even a full size SD. The full size SD slot was a very pleasant surprise, and very welcome for shifting photos from my camera.
Overall: The portability and big screen are the selling points, as everyone aims to make a "macbook killer." Everything was nice and snappy, and unlike some Windows 11 machines, the battery drain issue wasn't prevalent during sleep. The keyboard does have a slight bit of travel, but does take getting used to. I was making some more errors than typical initially, but after a while, I got accustomed and wrote this review without having to edit significant bits. There is no dedicated GPU, however, so don't expect to play any AAA (or even medium intensity) games on this. Trying to run Overwatch, the fans started getting loud and hot, and it wasn't worth it.
So for those who need a Windows machine that looks and feels like a Macbook Air, this is it. If you need/want to do any kind of medium/heavy gaming at all, I'd say look elsewhere for a dedicated GPU.

Gives MacBook Air a run for their money
on July 30, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
Packaging: simple but effective, with minimalist packing. Surface Laptop is covered in a thin paper wrap, and then the power cord and brick are underneath the tray.
Screen: touchscreen capable, with 120 Hz refresh rate. Standard 2304 x 1536 resolution makes for a crisp view on the 13.8” screen. 600 bits brightness is plenty for offices or home, but trying to use the laptop on a sunny day out on the patio at my local coffee shop was a little difficult to see.
Ports: 2 USB-C, 1 USB-A, 3.5 mm headphone jack (hallelujah), and the magnetic jack for the charger. The magnetic connector is proprietary, but has been consistent for all Surface products so not a surprise. Of note, you can use the USB C ports to directly charge the Surface Laptop, in case you don’t want to carry around the power brick or forget to bring it.
AI: this is the big push in tech nowadays, and the Surface Laptop 7 has a dedicated Copilot key to launch the Copilot+ AI assistant. Pushing the key launches the AI chatbot in a new window, which looks identical to the page if you have tried using Microsoft Edge’s new updated version. Copilot is powered by ChatGPT-4, so it’s pretty standard fare. You can ask Copilot to generate anything from form letters, to schedule templates, to workout plans. Some more sophisticated prompts can yield some pretty amazing results. Then, the big surprise for me was CoCreator, which is linked into Paint. You use AI prompts to ask it to generate images based off what you write, and it was actually very cool.
Battery life with standard office work (judicious use of Microsoft Excel and Word, and web browsing - no videos) has literally lasted me 3 full workdays on a single charge. Microsoft touts 20 hours of video playback, and I believe it based on my usage.
I’ve used Surface Pros dating back to the Surface Pro 4, and I always had gripes (some major), but for the first time, I can and do recommend the Surface Laptop wholeheartedly.

Best mobile controller out right now
on July 12, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
The TL;DR is pretty simple: this is the best mobile controller available on the market right now.
I have been using a mobile controller for my iPhone 13 Pro Max, and it’s probably the best known controller. The layout is simple, and the app does a decent job organizing games, screenshots, etc, and the physical controller itself is fairly well suited for my hand. However, my constant complaint ever since I first started using it was that I had to remove my phone from its case to attach the controller.
The SCUF is Bluetooth, so I no longer need to mess with my case every time I want to play a game. And the SCUF Nomad has more substantial grips, which look reminiscent of an Xbox controller body. Which is great because it’s just enough extra heft to fit more ergonomically in my hands, but not thick to the point of me ever feeling like it’s too bulky to take around in my bag. In addition, two extra back buttons allow for mapping tac sprints and other actions instead of having to double tap the sticks or whatever button you choose.
The app was what had me most worried, but immediately upon opening it, I was ok. Layout is clean, with easy to follow labels for recommended games and your saved favorites. The one nitpick I have is that instead of endless scrolling, you have to constantly tap the “+” to load more games beyond a certain point in the recommended tab.
Bluetooth connection was quick and I didn’t have any problems with lag during my play. Added bonus, works great as a ps5 remote play controller
Excellent controller all around

Combining fitness tracking with 10 mm drivers
on July 5, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
I really really wanted to love these. Moving fitness tracking into earbuds is not new but this is the newest attempt/iteration that I’m aware of. That Sennheiser, the company who makes most of the equipment I use, got me really excited for the sound quality. After all, with Sennheiser’s history and expertise producing in-ear monitors for professionals, it seemed like a toss up that sport ear buds would carry over some of that sound.
I’ll start with the negatives, which are likely highly subjective given everyone’s ears are different, not in sound preference and physical anatomy. Combining multiple size ear tips with ear fins for added security was logically a good call for strenuous workouts. In practice, however, doing metcons with these in, I could constantly feel and “notice” the ear fins. They never fully popped out of my ears, but I did have to adjust them periodically. Secondly, the accuracy of the pulse tracking isn’t stellar. For steady runs, the readings matched my Apple Watch but any time I did HIIT exercises, it was all over the place. Finally, apps on apps. Predictably you need to download the Sennheiser Smart Control app to change EQ, ANC settings, etc. but for the fitness, you then need to also download an additional app by Polar to get the full readouts and trends. Thankfully, you can at least see the basic values of your temp and HR within the main Sennheiser app.
For the good, the sound quality is punchy with a good amount of bass if that’s your thing. Ear tips were standard with varied sizes, and I found them to be comfortable enough. The fins provide added security and stability as stated above.
Overall, the sound quality was on par with what I’d expect from a premium-priced offering from a well known sound company like Sennheiser. If you don’t already own an external gadget like a garmin/appke watch/etc, then this can be your one stop shop. If you already own any type of equipment that can perform fitness tracking, however, I’m not sure that the added price is worth the jump.

QD-OLED monitor with TV functionality
on July 2, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
To be completely transparent, part of my experience is a bit biased because this is my first OLED screen.
Compared to QLED screens I’ve used before, even before getting into the brightness of the panel, the hype is real. Something about the way OLED can display blacks makes it more real, almost silky.
At default setting at natural, colors were quite accurate for 6500K. 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms response rates are standard for this tier of monitor. Ports include HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort inputs, with a little rubber cable management loop in the back. Samsung touts a “metal” design, and the monitor does have a nice aluminum base frame. However, the arm is a mix of plastic and metal, which still felt plenty sturdy and all but disappears from sight while in use.
Samsung reportedly used a new generation matte finish to reduce glare, and it did seem to reduce glare compared to my other office monitor.
One nitpick: Samsung’s Tizen interface bleeds into every.thing. It’s one of my biggest gripes with my Samsung smart TV’s, and unfortunately, because the G80SD has TV functionality, Samsung has introduced their abhorrent menu system. Compared to changing settings for a typical monitor, you need to jump through what seems like at least 2-3 additional menus in order to reach what you want. And ads. Ads sneak in everywhere.
Other than the UI, I greatly enjoy everything else about this monitor. The screen is slim so despite being 32 in, it doesn’t take up much. The tradeoff, likely to keep the screen slimmer, is much of the electronics were moved into a large external brick. For my desk, I have a hook that I can attach to behind view, but something to note.
Overall, OLED is amazing, and color accuracy is great.

Space saving design with quiet fan
on June 28, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
We’ve gone through more air fryers in our house than I’d care to admit. Either the unit dies on us after less than a year, or it just doesn’t work out.
One of my wife’s biggest gripes about an air fryer big enough to meal prep for a family of 4 is that it takes up way too much space on our counter.
This is the first air fryer that my wife doesn’t have serious complaints about.
Design: The baskets are thin but deep; and side by side with our other unit, each individual basket holds almost as much. However, with the removable rack you can actually utilize the entire basket, compared to a typical air fryer basket that you have to leave space between the food to allow circulation.
Cooking: comparing to our other air fryer, the Ninja does seem to take a few minutes longer to cook the same volume of food. However! The fans are significantly quieter than our other air fryer units - and, most importantly, the food turns out much crisper.
Cleaning: this is probably one of the biggest pros for this unit. Everything is well thought out for real world use. You can pull the racks and dividers out to allow for easy cleaning.
Overall: high capacity, space saving design that cooks focal crispier than our other air fryers. Highly recommend for families, or just meal prepping.

Easy pairing and comfortable headset
on May 20, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
Sound quality: good highs and lows, makes hearing footsteps in COD much easier to discern compared to the TV
Comfort: soft foam ear cups sit comfortably around my ears, and I didn’t feel any pressure points even after extended playing times. One con though common to foam is they do get hot/sweaty. Some companies combat this by putting cooling elements into the ear cups, but it didn’t detract my from my playing.
Connection: pairing with my PS5 was literally 2 steps. Plug in the Bluetooth adapter into slot, and then turn on the headset. Done. Pairing to my phone was also seamless, and my iPhone had zero issues finding, pairing, and staying connected to the headset.
Accessories: not much to write home about here. The box comes with a usb-C cable, removable boom mic, and the Bluetooth dongle. The mic has a foam head cover and adjusts well.
Overall:
Solid matte touch headset with comfortable cups and a soft band. Solid sound quality and good connectivity. I never had any issues with lost connections either with my pS5 or my phone.

Perfect for little hands!
on April 15, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
We have been looking for a better toothbrush for our little for a long time. That being said, the regular Sonicare toothbrushes are way too big and strong doe kids’ teeth and gums.
The Philips One has the same structure, just downsized. The handle is slimmer, and the base is a fun shape to hold the toothbrush. The head of the toothbrush is removable to allow for cleaning, drying, and sanitation, which helps prevent the mold forming underneath.
Automatic two minute timer makes it really easy for our son to know how long he needs to brush for. Unlike some of the higher end Sonicare toothbrushes that monitor via an app to make sure you hit every part of your teeth and apply the right technique, you don’t get that kind of feedback with the Philips One. And that’s okay. We aren’t looking for something that fancy, and for the target age, I doubt any kids would actually care nor follow an app to optimize their brushing.
We got the light blue color, and our boy is happy with the color.
One button activation to turn on/off. Simple.

Budget priced monitor punching above its wt class
on April 3, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
The ASUS VG279Q3A is an updated monitor in their TUF line of gaming peripherals. Technically, TUF represents their mid line, compared to their higher tier ROG line. That’s definitely not to say the quality is subpar, the intent and design are slightly different. Kind of like Toyota vs Lexus. Still plenty of quality, just minus the extras.
Like all recent IPS gaming screens, this has a fast 180 mHz 1 ms response time, so you don’t need to worry about screen tear during games.
The 27 in screen is nice and big, and color templates can be switched around for the viewing purpose. One thing I would critique is that there is no ability to adjust the height of the monitor. I’m guessing ASUS engineers felt like given the 27 in screen size, people wouldn’t need to lift it much, but in my case, the way my desk is set up, I wanted to be able to raise the top of the screen about 2 in. Easily fixed by placing on a riser, but still.
Other than that, with the FHD resolution, it was crisp playing PS5 and as a screen for my docked laptop.
Fast, big IPS screen that gives you a ton of bang for your buck

Mop and vacuum with smart navigation
on March 22, 2024
Posted by: codeblue
TL; DR: I can’t believe how well the Eufy X10 Pro Omni works. It seamlessly switches between mop and vacuum going over our living room flooring and then rugs, and then the carpet in the rooms.
The base is wider and deeper than other self-cleaning vacuums due to the additional bin for waste water, but the unit is still fairly compact and doesn’t stand out in our house.
Up front, the only - absolutely nitpicking here - negative I have found is that the waste water bin is small. So as the X10 makes multiple return trips to dump dirty water and refill, the waste water bin gets full really quickly. Granted, given its dirty water, you would want to dump it frequently to prevent mildew and nasty odors, but I still found it somewhat annoying to have to dump multiple times.
Reall other than that, I can’t say enough good things. The directional sensors are smart enough that I never once saw the X10 bump its nose into furniture or walls, and even looking at the marks, there weren’t any missed spots on the flooring nor on the rug despite going back and forth.
This makes cleaning so much easier. My wife absolutely loves this addition to our home.
