Quantum of Solace is an exceptional James Bond picture that was unfairly maligned by critics. Perhaps the film's abrupt beginning, which starts without alerting audiences to the plot of the previous film, caught viewers who weren't intimately familiar with Casino Royale off guard. As such, viewers of Quantum of Solace are advised to re- watch Casino Royale immediately prior to beginning the film. MGM's Blu-ray presentation of the film is first rate; its reference grade video and audio set new standards in Blu-ray quality. Those on the lookout for supplements, however, will be disappointed in the slim selection of extras included with the release. Quantum of Solace is an intensely exciting James Bond adventure that ties up loose ends from Casino Royale, while cementing Daniel Craig's place among the best Bonds in history. Quantum of Solace receives my highest recommendation.

From Russia With Love is one of my personal favorites among the varions James Bond films. With Sean Connery at his prime, featuring a story pulled directly from an Ian Fleming novel, the film remains one of the storied series' finest achievements. MGM continues to do fine work with their restorative work on the Bond franchise; From Russia With Love looks better than could have been expected for a film of its advanced age, while sounding thoroughly updated and exciting. The set's supplemental features are also well assembled, giving a nice historical perspective on the film's production and cultural impact. Bond fans will doubtlessly line up to purchase From Russia With Love on Blu-ray. Those viewers not familiar with the film will be treated to one of the series' best; it's a film that contains a tremendous amount of legendary material that must be seen. This exceptional Blu-ray release is highly recommended.

Goldfinger was originally presented theatrically with a monaural soundtrack that has been faithfully reproduced on Blu-ray courtesy of a lossy Dolby Digital option. While there are certainly those who will revel in the nostalgia of this original track, most will be more inclined to sample the extensively remixed 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track that has been included with this Blu-ray edition. Those responsible for this mix should be commended; the track serves as a wonderful surround update that manages to increase the relative fidelity of the audio elements, while giving the film a much-needed aural boost.
Regardless, there are still source-related limitations present in Goldfinger. The film is now 45 years old and the recording technology of the day was relatively primitive in comparison to the advanced digital techniques used today. As such, one can easily detect hiss and compromised sections of the soundtrack that will probably never sound any better than they do here. What's left, is a remarkable sonic achievement that manages to maintain the feel of the original mono track, while adding much needed bass and surround elements to the presentation. Goldfinger doesn't sound like a modern-day action film, by any means, but it does sound remarkably fresh and lively. Highly recommended!

In fact, I didn't have any qualms to introduce my girlfriend to the Bond world with it, and let it be Her first Bond. And we look forward to our next Blu-ray Bond experience, be it a High Definition 1.85 '60s Dr. No, or a second Craig movie, perhaps a remake of the second Bond novel (with the new Felix Leiter returning to), Live And Let Die

ANISTON'S FINEST DRAMATIC ROLE

I kind of wish one of the marketing gurus handling Cake would have labeled it a comedy, for the film's pitch black humor actually was one of its chief pleasures for me personally. With that in mind, and in no way meant ironically (or of course pejoratively), Cake features Jennifer Aniston giving one of her finest comedic performances—as well as one of her finest dramatic ones. The film has some narrative hiccups and is perhaps ultimately too sanguine about it all given Claire's roiling unease with both her body and her psyche, but Cake is bittersweet fare that has some wonderful moments. Technical merits are very strong, though supplements are on the meager side. Recommended.
