They don't make 'em like xXx all that often anymore. Unpretentious, loud, exciting, lots of practical effects, a big score and Metal music, plenty of gunfire and explosions, a musclebound hero...it's a quality action film that's equal parts ridiculous and exhilarating. Even at two hours, it's well paced, Vin Diesel is fine as the lead, and it's a whole lot of fun. Sony's re-release is a home run. Everything's better compared to the old release. Audio is the least of the upgrades. The uptick in video is substantial and the quantity of extras is generous, even if most of it simply carries over from the standard definition era. Even the new cover art is great. Highly recommended!

Forget the plot. xXx: Return of Xander Cage works as a no-frills, comedy-laced Action flick that offers a nice balance between throwback and contemporary. It's hardly a great film in the traditional sense, but as a big, loud Action flick that just leaves a smile on the face, they don't come significantly better than this. Paramount's Blu-ray offers excellent video, reference Atmos audio, and a decent array of bonus content. Recommended.

Fifty Shades Darker hardly qualifies as smart moviemaking. Edgy, maybe, but beyond its signature sx capades is a vacuous character drama with little to offer beyond various romps and sx toys and their rather explicit usage. Universal's Blu-ray, however, is excellent. Video and audio are near pristine and the package includes a decent little array of extra content. Fans can buy with confidence.

The era is richly realized, from costumes to locations, and the performances are first-rate. PBS' Blu-ray boasts good, if not occasionally troubled, video, a quality lossless soundtrack, and several interesting and basically supportive supplements. Highly recommended.

Those of us who review films for a living get used to seeing the "same old, same old" — repeatedly. Some folks probably either won't "get" or frankly won't like The Lobster, but the one thing you can say about it is, you've never seen anything quite like it before. Those wanting to experience something unabashedly surreal that nonetheless offers that surreality in an almost documentarian style will have a lot of fun with this film. Having a bleak sense of humor will probably help, for this is a film that mines the traumas of the human heart in order to find its comedy. Technical merits are generally strong, and even without a lot in the way of supplements, The Lobster comes Highly recommended.

Captain Fantastic, more than anything, has novelty on its side. While some of the driving-force drama of family squabbles and disagreements about life aren't exactly groundbreaking, the characters and approach most certainly are, or are at least fairly close. The film is made of interesting juxtapositions, fascinating characters, and engaging insights into various stations in and perspectives on life. Performances are very detailed and nuanced from all -- including the children, who certainly have the hardest parts in the film -- and the film blends excellent pacing even at two hours with knowing direction and beautiful photography. Universal's Blu-ray features good video and audio. Extras are limited to a single featurette, but the movie does a good enough job of standing tall on its own without support from added content. Highly recommended.

When you're forced to sit through as many cookie cutter entertainments as many of us reviewers do, something like Swiss Army Man becomes appealing simply because it's so different. That said, this film is obviously not going to be for everybody, and my hunch is even those who, like I did, establish a certain genial relationship with the material may not be especially won over once everything is said and done (and/or farted). Dano and Radcliffe are both amazing, and the film's very peculiarity will be an automatic draw for some, but whether Swiss Army Man actually has anything to say is questionable. Technical merits are very strong, and with caveats noted, Swiss Army Man comes Recommended.

Disney's Signature Collection Blu-ray release of Pinocchio is very well done: more streamlined than the previous release, attractively packaged, and priced to own. Video and audio qualities are identical to the last release -- and they're great -- and the addition of several new supplements makes this a fine overall package. Recommended to Disney completionists and to those that picked up the old release but would like the digital copy. The added supplements by themselves are fine but aren't worth the full price of admission. It's obviously a must-buy for those that don't yet own the film on Blu-ray.

"Frank & Lola" has a noir-ish sense of craftsmanship, and its way with psychosexual issues is intriguing, coloring this game of manipulation with salacious details. Power plays dominate the proceedings, and Shannon is especially sharp with this type of conflict, delivering a coiled performance that's coolly observational, making Frank's care for Lola waver between romantic protection and big game hunting, keeping tabs on the woman, testing her in small ways. Poots is a fine screen partner (though the British actress's stiff American accent continues to distract), but this is really the Shannon Show, and he's great, especially during moments with Nyqvist, who's nicely reptilian. Ross wisely keeps attention on his cast, allowing "Frank & Lola" to develop a sense of instability and increase its potential for violence without turning to predictable plotting just to lubricate suspense. It's not a major offering of uneasiness, but its toxic charms soon become riveting.

Independence Day still holds up as one of the best guilty pleasures out there. A Summer popcorn muncher that defines the term, the movie is packed with the perfect balance of action, humor, good characters, great visual effects, and memorable moments, essentially everything that makes a "blockbuster" a "blockbuster." It'll be interesting to see if the sequel can match the original's charm, excitement, and lasting appeal, a tall order to be sure but one that team of Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are capable of filling. As for this new Blu-ray, it's terrific. A strong improvement over an already good transfer is alone worth the price of admission. A few more new extras would have been nice, but the legacy supplements are terrific. The absence of a new audio track is the only real drawback to this release. Still, it comes very highly recommended.
