IN THE HEART OF THE SEA
on June 3, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
The tale of the Essex is a remarkable story. It offers the high adventure of a shipwreck and prolonged effort at rescue. It provides a window into the life of whalers at sea and an overview of a colorful, bygone industry that, as several of the characters note, provided light and fuel to the world in the era before gas and oil. There's even the possibility of a Captain Bligh/Mr. Christian conflict in the characters of Pollard and Chase (an option with which ItHotS flirts but doesn't develop). Above all, the story provides an opportunity to explore both the hubris of human illusions that nature can be mastered and the intimate drama of conflict and cooperation among individuals pushed to the edge—the same explosive mixture that James Cameron exploited so effectively in Titanic. Howard's film touches on all of these elements, then shortchanges them in an effort to invest the story with Melville's profundity. He would have been better off remaking Moby-Dick. A decent Blu-ray, especially for the audio, but not recommended as a film.

CRMINAL ACTIVITIES
on May 27, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
It's beyond ironic that the script of Criminal Activities has been attributed to Robert Lowell, whose erudite existence as a writer and teacher at such rarefied institutions as Harvard and Yale couldn't be further removed from the film's illicit environs. Lowell wouldn't have sat through this film, let alone written it. Whether you want to sit through it is a personal decision, but I recommend doing so with a rental.

SELF/LESS
on May 27, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
Self/Less is, in a word, disappointing. The movie has all the ingredients in place -- including the right director -- for a brainy Sci-Fi film but instead settles for a slick but still second-rate Action bore-fest that's neither creative nor exciting. The movie works well enough as a mindless romp through a litter of potential that the movie seems almost afraid to touch, but anyone expecting even a modicum of dramatic satisfaction should look elsewhere. Universal's Blu-ray release of Self/Less does offer top-shelf video and audio. Supplements are of the standard commentary and featurette variety. Rent it.

REVENANT
on May 13, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
The Revenant may seem on its face to be a 19th century Death Wish, but the emotional depth of this piece, along with its truly astonishing cinematography, make this one of the most unique viewing experiences in recent memory. There's arguable over-length here, but that's probably the only quibble most folks will have with what is one of the most incredibly visceral presentations of man vs. nature (and man) the world of cinema has ever seen. Technical merits are virtually flawless, and The Revenant comes Highly recommended.

Prefontaine
on April 30, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Prefontaine takes audiences on an emotional journey of highs and lows with a great appreciation for character, place, time, and purpose beyond the capabilities of most other Sports films. Intimate yet broad, the film manages to blend the individual with the greater world around him and the symbiotic ebb and flow and influences that resulted. Marked by steady direction, simple yet nicely complimentary production values, and several great performances, Prefontaine makes for an excellent film centered on sport but built around the human condition. Mill Creek's Blu-ray is unfortunately devoid of supplements and features lackluster video and audio. Recommended only the strength of the film, and it'll make a great double feature with Race.

CREED
on April 22, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
A sequel to Creed has already been announced, and it's not hard to imagine possibilities for continuing Adonis' story, but a subsequent chapter will be hard-pressed to replicate Creed's intensity. Both Rocky and his creator had to be convinced by younger men they had inspired that they still had work to do. The thrill of those twin discoveries blazes through the screen, fired even more by the younger men's joy at connecting with their pasts. Highest recommendation.

FREDDIE AND JASON
on April 15, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Freddy vs. Jason delivers exactly what's expected of it: a bloody brawl between two Horror icons that's plenty fun and gruesome. Technically sound and fun to watch, Freddy vs. Jason makes for one of the better Horror pictures of the decade, saved from the necessary but ultimately bland secondary filler that allows for the movie to get to where it needs to go. In many ways a typical Horror pictures but certainly a crowd-pleasing, bloody good time, Freddy vs. Jason might not embody everything a Horror fan dreams of but it's easily far better than it probably deserves to be. New Line's Blu-ray release, too, impresses. Featuring a strong film-like transfer, a solid lossless soundtrack, and a nice selection of extras, Horror aficionados definitely need to make this part of their Blu-ray collections. Recommended.
Perhaps, it may be argued, comparing the Friday the 13th remake to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake as much as its own predecessors isn't quite fair, but with the success of Massacre comes only heightened anticipation for Friday the 13th, and while the film delivers Jason in what is probably his best movie yet in terms of production values, atmosphere, violence, and character development, the experience ultimately disappoints not necessarily in context but rather in expectation. A strong entry into the Friday the 13th universe but not quite as atmospheric or bloody as it may have been, the film works to a point but never distinguishes itself much from the pack outside of the technical improvements and somewhat superior character development. Warner Brothers' Blu-ray release of Friday the 13th, like the film, impresses, but not quite to the degree to which fans may have hoped. Featuring adequate video and audio presentations but skimping on bonus materials, the disc suffices but isn't a "must own." Nevertheless, hardcore Horror and Friday the 13th fans will want to pick this up on day one; most others will be better served renting or waiting for a sale.

Years before the first big-screen adaptations of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia reached audiences, the BBC produced its own versions of the first four books in the series (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair), all of which appear in this unique collection, as they originally aired on British television. The telemovies, like the novels on which they are based, relay the adventures of a number of different British children in the universe of Narnia - a land that has initially fallen under the spell of the evil White Witch, but that experiences redemption via the presence of the lion Aslan. The cast includes Camila Power, Warwick Davis, Tom Baker, Sophie Wilcox, Sophie Cook and Jonathan R. Scott.

CHRONICLES OF NARNIA BBC
on April 1, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
The BBC series captures the innocence, the adventure, and the peculiarly British charm of the books. Also, much like Peter Jackson's new Lord of the Rings movies, it replaces lengthy expository text with beautiful scenery and intricately designed props, keeping the plot advancing steadily. Though there are some groan-worthy bits of melodramatic line delivery, the acting is overall quite good, and there is a standout performance by Tom Baker (known to many SF fans as the fourth Doctor Who) as Puddleglum the Marshwiggle in The Silver Chair. The only thing to complain about is that they never got to make the other three books.

ROOM
on April 1, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
Make no mistake about it, there are aspects to Room which make it very difficult to sit through, probably especially for parents who are prone to worry anyway about the safety of their children. But what is so refreshingly commendable here is the film's portrayal of the resilience of the human spirit under unimaginable duress, not to mention the unshakeable bond between a mother and child. Performances are incredibly moving, technical merits are generally strong, and Room comes Highly recommended.

puss in boots
on March 25, 2016

Puss in Boots is a solid but slightly disappointing Shrek spinoff. The animation rocks and the characters are largely excellent, but the storyline is a bit thin and the jokes are at their best when playing on cat-isms, proving hit-or-miss otherwise. Still, it's a good, relatively clean, fun ride that should entertain the target audience and at least keep mom and dad halfway interested. This is best enjoyed as raw eye candy above all else; check out Shrek Forever After for a far more well-rounded fairy tale-gone-haywire animated adventure and for a movie that doesn't merely lump all its best moments into the trailer. DreamWorks' Blu-ray release of Puss in Boots features fantastic video and audio to go along with a good number of extras. Recommended.
