AMERICAN GIGOLO
on March 11, 2016

American Gigolo is surely one of the most underrated movies of all times. It's a very good movie, in my opinion second best of Paul Schrader's films, right after "Mishima - Life in four chapters", and I never understood why it got all the bad reviews. First of all it's one of the most stylish films I've ever seen, with fascinating scenes from start to finish, vibrant colors and beautiful sets and exterior shots. Paul Schrader, apart from being a great scriptwriter is also the master of photography, maybe the best in modern Hollywood. American Gigolo is a phenomenal character study too, struggle of a lonely man against the society he doesn't belong to, and in which he was artificially implanted by becoming something he's not. Michelle (Lauren Hutton) succeeds in bringing out the true Julian Kay, and their relationship on screen is very close and direct, although it maybe doesn't seem so, probably because both of the actors appear cold and distant, but that's just the result of the world they're living in. Both their lives are fake, and the only time they are real is with one another. The love scene between Julian and Michelle is one of the best in history of the cinema, it tells so much without showing much. Paul Schrader is one of my favorite directors, but that's only a small fraction of why I'm giving this movie

SPECTRE IS BOND
on March 11, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Despite its problems, Spectre is a Bond film, and Bond fans are loyal. With repeat viewings, I suspect that Spectre's flaws will retreat from attention, and fans will concentrate on individual sequences that are memorable, primarily in the film's first half. Though light on extras, the Blu-ray is a first-rate production and recommended.

WORKING GIRL
on March 11, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
Working Girl doesn't really have many surprises up its well tailored sleeve, but it delivers on an emotional level like nobody's business. The principal cast is pitch perfect (Griffith, Cusack and Weaver all received well deserved Academy Award nominations), managing to wend through a few hoary clichés that the film doesn't seem to mind wallowing in for a while. This may not be Nichols' greatest masterpiece, but it's certainly one of his most effortlessly enjoyable films. Technical merits are excellent, and even without much in the way of supplements Working Girl comes Highly recommended.

TWILIGHT SAGA
on March 11, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
There's probably little doubt that completists won't think twice about getting this set, and for those who are watching their pocketbook or pinching their pennies, the good news is at least this new package isn't that expensive. It is very handsomely packaged in a photo album-like book which contains lots of heavy cardstock photos into which the discs are inserted. That said, the new bonus content is really not that earth shattering when you get right down to it, especially the two Saga features which are simply edits of big scenes of each of the protagonists. If you haven't yet gotten any and/or all of the Twilight films on Blu-ray, this new set is a great bargain and comes Recommended.

HORROR AT ITS BEST
on March 4, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
If the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, the greatest trick The Exorcist ever pulled was convincing audiences he just might. Can any film that's risen in its wake say the same? It never ceases to amaze me that some thirty-seven years after its original theatrical release, horror filmmakers are still desperately chasing director William Friedkin and writer William Peter Blatty's legacy, each one failing to deliver a more startling depiction of evil incarnate. Many have tried. To their credit, a small but frightening handful have even brushed greatness. But while these scant few have chipped away at The Exorcist in one regard or another -- be it storytelling, special effects, atmosphere, shock value or any one of the elusive elements that transform a horror film into a horror classic -- it's tough to name a single standout from the last four decades that bests Friedkin and Blatty's macabre masterpiece on every front. Owen Roizman's deceptively simple, utterly haunting cinematography. Steve Boeddeker's unnerving score. The film's unexpected yet flawless casting. Jason Miller's raw but restrained performance. Sweet, little Linda Blair's mangled, unholy face. Ellen Burstyn's unhinged terror. Blatty's searing screenplay. Pazuzu and its ungodly mindgames. Friedkin's sharp eye and steady hand at the helm. Ten Academy Award nominations... make no mistake, The Exorcist may just be a perfect genre storm.

TRULY MOVED
on March 4, 2016

It is understandable that viewers who became fans of The Outsiders in its original version are disappointed that this DVD contains only "The Complete Novel" . Since Warner is the king of double-dips, here's hoping they release a deluxe edition in the future that includes a second disc with the theatrical cut so that everyone can have their preferred viewing experience. For new viewers, however, I heartily recommend "The Complete Novel". I was impressed by The Outsiders in the shorter cut, but I wasn't truly moved by it until I saw "The Complete Novel". Warner's DVD is an impressive presentation and is highly recommended.

ENJOYABLE
on March 4, 2016

After so much negative advance word, I was surprised to find that Pan was an enjoyable viewing experience. The visuals are often stunning, the story is classical, and the characters are consistently interesting (and anyone who thinks they're unrealistic or too broadly drawn should take a good long look at reality, which daily offers people every bit as extreme as Blackbeard or Hook). If the film has flaws, they're in the restraint that Wright applied to keep the film family-friendly and in the vestiges of narrative machinery (e.g., the opening voiceover) that dangle the promise of an "origin story". Pan is something else, and if you can take it that way, the Blu-ray is recommended.

SNOW WHITE
on March 4, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is an unquestioned classic of cinema, animated or otherwise. And considering its place in Disney's history, it's fair to label it as one of the most important films in cinema history. Disney has done right by its first animated classic on Blu-ray, but this "Signature Collection" version isn't the definitive release. For sheer volume of extras, the previously released "Diamond Edition" still dwarfs this version, even considering some of the new material added here. Nevertheless, this release will prove essential in the collection of every Disney enthusiast and is a must-buy for fans who may have missed the Diamond Edition the first time around or those wanting a digital version of the movie. For those who are still enjoying their well-loved Diamond Edition release but aren't interested in some new extras and new, slicker packaging, there's no reason to pick up this release.

ONCE IS UNIQUE
on February 26, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Once is wonderfully unique and it contains some stunning music, but dramatically the film often feels inert and half formed, a series of vignettes rather than a well constructed story. Carney seems only too aware of these facts, given some of the comments he makes in his commentary and on the featurette included on this Blu-ray disc as a supplement. But there's a certain ineluctable charm to Once that helps it to overcome some of its flaws, and the music in the film acts as a soothing balm that washes over some of the rough corners on display in other parts of this outing. High definition can only do so much with limited source material, and that's the case with both the video and audio presentations here. With all these caveats in mind, Once still comes Recommended.

MAD FOR MAD MEN
on February 26, 2016
Posted by: JOHNNYANGEL2010
Verified Purchase:Yes
Maybe it's the ennui engendered by the thought of Mad Men finally going off the air, but this season has a just slightly anemic quality at times. That said, the huge cast of characters continues to surprise with various skirmishes and denouements, and as always the show's production design is a complete knockout. Don may never figure out who he "really" is, and therefore hopes for a catharsis on the part of the show's rabid viewership may be a fool's errand, but watching him attempt to, well, "rebrand" himself still provides one of the most singular experiences in contemporary television. Once again, technical merits are very strong and this Blu-ray release laudably includes the kind of excellent supplements that fans had come to expect after the first few seasons. Highly recommended.
