After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of The Jazz Singer has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one way to save the movie and their careers: turn "The Duelling Cavalier" into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing in Lina's lines and songs. But can they hide the truth from Lina? This special 60th anniversary collection also includes three documentaries about the film, which film critic Pauline Kael called "Just about the best Hollywood musical of all time:" Musicals Great Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM, What a Glorious Feeling: The Making of Singin' in the Rain, and Singin' in the Rain: Raining on a New Generation.

TIMELESS FUN IN THE RAIN

Arguably the greatest movie musical of all time, Singin' in the Rain holds up well enough to win over a whole new generation of fans. Whether they give it a fair shot to do so is another matter entirely. Thankfully, Warner has granted the film an extensive 4K remaster, an impressive (albeit slightly flawed) video presentation, an absolutely terrific DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track and a few solid extras, among them an audio commentary and a newly produced high-definition documentary. The concurrently released Collector's Edition gift set is pricier, but offers a second disc of SD bonus content, a 48-page hardcover book, a full-size movie-themed umbrella, and more. Regardless of which version you choose, just be sure to choose Singin' in the Rain. It doesn't matter what year you were born, Kelly and Freed's timeless classic deserves a shot at earning a spot in your collection.

If you have already seen Sam Taylor-Johnson's blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey and it happens to be one of your favorite films this year, then you will be very pleased with Universal's Blu-ray release. The technical presentation is excellent and the film looks terrific in high-definition. More importantly, in addition to the Theatrical Version, Universal have included a slightly longer Unrated Version of the film. The film is also complimented by an outstanding soundtrack featuring top tracks by The Weekend ("Earned It"), The Vaults ("One Last Night"), Skylar Grey ("I Know You"), and Annie Lennox ("I Put A Spell On You"), amongst others. The bulk of it is scripted to appeal to viewers who have a soft spot for romantic tearjerkers.the film is beautiful to look at too. the acting wavers at times , but still an awesome movie....also, check out the 80's film 9 1/2 weeks with kim basinger for more like this!

feel good cinema

Annie is the epitome of feel-good cinema. Its entire construction deals with positive thinking, love, family, friendship, and promoting the good in life while working through the bad and refusing to let negative circumstances stand in the way of a healthy outlook on life. It's a movie high in spirit and fit for the entire family. It's catchy and pleasant, filled with quality song and dance numbers. The performances are stellar even if the movie is shaped by rather simple and straightforward ideas. It's that adherence to simpleness and goodness that make the movie great and so incredibly sweet, one of the top musicals, and perhaps the finest "rainy day" picture of them all. Sony's Blu-ray release of Annie is disappointingly short on extras, but it does offer solid video and audio. Considering the quality of the film and Sony's low MSRP, this release comes highly recommended.

stunning performances

Foxcatcher doesn't appear to be anything remarkable at-a-glance, but its technical prowess and stunning performances say otherwise, as they pertain to both the core story detail and the external portrayals thereof. It's a fairly straightforward, if not deliberate, story of insanity slow-brewing beneath a mountain of wealth and an unyielding passion, both of which mask, but cannot fully contain, the reality below. The film is strikingly beautiful in its simplicity and slow simmering approach. It ends quickly, a punctuation on a carefully constructed build-up to tragedy. Shaped by gorgeously knowledgeable and exacting direction, precision editing, and several incredibly detailed performances that rank amongst the finest of the decade thus far, Foxcatcher stands as one of the strongest films of 2014. Sony's Blu-ray release of Foxcatcher comes with a disappointingly slim collection of extras, but video an audio presentations are fine. Very highly recommended.

shining comlexity

Whiplash is a beautifully complex movie that might admittedly scare some away considering both what appears to be a fairly trite, routine story of a student-teacher relationship and an examination of an unhealthy obsession and an unhealthy teaching tool. But the movie absolutely shines as a dark and wonderfully complex examination of the human condition, punctuated by two of the most outstanding performances of the year, including an Oscar-nominated effort from J.K. Simmons who deserves to walk away with the award. Sony's Blu-ray release of Whiplash is outstanding. High quality picture, amazing sound, and a nice compliment of extras make this one of the best of the young 2015 release schedule and practically a shoo-in for a spot on the end-of-year top ten list. Whiplash earns my highest recommendation.

FANS OF THE FRANCHISE WILL ENJOY THIS

Perhaps if The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hadn't been such a generally exciting and well done second chapter in this supposed "trilogy," the flaws of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 wouldn't be so pronounced. This is an oddly static offering, one that admittedly has a number of really interesting elements, but which never works up much momentum or (even more importantly) emotional heft. Fans of the franchise will no doubt be willing to (at least largely) forgive the film its shortcomings, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 already has its work cut out for it. Technical merits are very strong and the supplemental package is well done, and with caveats noted, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 comes Recommended.

revenge action galore

The Equalizer is superficially fun in a classic "revenge" or "vigilante" 1970s and 1980s style (slicked up for today's viewers, however), but it's much more satisfying than many of its kind considering its exceptional character development below the obvious good-and-evil surface. Washington's portrayal of Robert McCall ranks amongst his best performances, the actor brilliantly balancing a man who is markedly different from what he appears to be but who, at the same time, brings all of his positive characteristics to his violent side. He's a quintessential hero in the modern world, skilled at his craft but a man who would rather help a friend by encouraging them rather than simply destroying their enemies, something he will do, however, if the situation demands it. It's another excellent pairing between Washington and Fuqua, putting the franchise in good hands with word of a potential sequel coming down the line. Sony's excellent Blu-ray release of The Equalizer features top-end video and audio. A fair bit of bonus content is included. Consider this a late-arriving short list candidate for the best of 2014 list. Very highly recommended.

A JOY TO WATCH

This is a very simple film and because it is brilliantly cast and directed, the result is excellence. Simplicity is something we rarely see these days yet it is something we crave in these very complex times. There are really only three characters in this film and so the casting was paramount. It pretty much goes without saying that Maggie Smith in the lead role is just perfect - as she always is. By coincidence, I re-watched Grand Marigold Hotel the following evening, and saw her playing a totally different person with a totally different voice. That is a skill that few modern actors can manage well. More of a surprise to me was Kevin Kline. I remember him in manic roles - typecast or that's how he is I do not know, but in this film he gave a beautifully measured and emotional performance with only a few glimmers of the manic! Finally Kristin Scott-Thomas was just excellent as she always is. Rarely does an actress gently age so perfectly, and her performance could not have been faulted for a moment - just superb.
Very well lit and photographed in what appeared to be quite confined spaces and with exteriors of Paris that just glowed with it's honey colour there is a visual treat here. And with very well-recorded sound, the film was a joy to watch. If your taste is for quality, quiet and thoughtful, for a well written screenplay based on an excellent story, with excellent actors, then this is a film you will thoroughly enjoy. It will definitely have more appeal to an over 50 or even over 60 audience - younger people will miss out on the subtleness and pathos and not appreciate this film.

The winner of five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director and boasting an Oscar-nominated score from the legendary James Horner that's at once traditional, bold, and tender, Braveheart is a bona-fide classic that may not be the most historically accurate picture but is certainly one of cinema's most fundamentally sound from the top down. With pitch-perfect pacing, fabulous acting, well-written characters, exciting action sequences, and an unwavering emotional core, Braveheart and gladiator may be found on a rather short list amongst the best of the best films in cinema history

Bateman's characters can be as off-putting as his comedies, and Guy Trilby and Bad Words are more divisive than most. Even so, the film is built around an effective mystery that works incredibly well, affording Bateman the opportunity to make Guy as bad as he likes without losing his audience before turning it all around. Guy may be the worst of the worst but, by film's end, he resembles something... human, perhaps even someone worth rooting for, or at least worthy enough for 90-minutes of laughs. Universal's Blu-ray release doesn't disappoint either, thanks to an excellent video presentation, solid DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track and small but decent selection of extras.
