GRIPPING DRAMA AT ITS BEST

Prisoners is a more eclectic, divisive film than I was anticipating, and not for the reasons its trailers suggest. Waxing between intimate drama and complex procedural, it's nearly ripped in two. Villenevue forges a gripping balance, though, and doesn't take the easy road, even when traveling winding, twisting paths with which cinephiles will be most familiar. Jackman, Gyllenhaal and their co-stars are uniformly excellent as well, Deakins' cinematography is a character in and of itself, and the story of the Kellers and the Birches is the stuff of every parent's worst nightmares. Which brings us to Warner's Blu-ray release. Slim supplemental package aside, the Blu-ray edition of Prisoners is a strong one, with a striking video presentation and immerssive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track.

A MUST OWN IN HI DEF

Many a Blu-ray fan have been salivating for classic hand-drawn Disney animated features in high definition. That trend has begun with a bang in Sleeping Beauty. The film is renown for its extensive attention to detail, and the many resources it took to maintain that level of quality. It showed beyond the shadow of a doubt that animation is an art form, and not a genre, but merely a medium in which to tell a cinematic story. Never was there a film like it before, or since. The Blu-ray release shows just how lush hand-drawn feature films can be in high definition. Boasting incredible picture and excellent sound, Sleeping Beauty has set high marks for Pinocchio and all the films to follow after it on BD. This is a must-own title, and receives my highest recommendation!

I kept waiting for They Came Together to really blast off into the comedic stratosphere, but instead this film simply hovered like an energetic puppy caught in midair as it desperately attempts to get your attention. There's about an evenly split 50/50 ratio here of jokes that land and jokes that just sit there, and my hunch is whether or not you end up really liking this film will have a lot to do with how much you enjoy Poehler and Rudd. While never at the giddy levels of the best Zucker films (and their offspring), They Came Together is reasonably amusing and benefits immensely from the innate charms of its two stars. Technical merits here are generally strong (especially the video), and They Came Together comes Recommended

It's amazing what a good story and a bit of talent can do. Overcoming what seems the biggest hurdle in Hollywood today -- money -- and delivering a movie that was not only a surprise and justifiable smash hit but a worthwhile project and a solid entry into the annals of Horror filmmaking, Paranormal Activity proves two things: that story comes first, and audiences will still spend their hard-earned money on a good movie, regardless of its budget, cast, crew, special effects, or in this case, lack thereof. Certainly, there are big-budget, large-scale effects films that do take the time to weave a strong story, but Paranormal Activity recalls a time when a movie had to rely almost absolutely on its own merits and not the technical expertise of a detached team of computer graphic specialists to dazzle audiences. No doubt there's bound to be a rash of copycat films that likely won't be as good as this in an effort to cash in on the low-risk, high-reward potential, but maybe one of them will be yet another diamond in the rough. Paramount's Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity offers technical presentations that aren't impressive but are reflective of the movie's built-in limitations. Where this release truly stumbles is in the absence of special features.
Once seemed to be enough for a movie like this. Paranormal Activity 2 feels completely redundant, even if it does play in conjunction with the story and characters of the first movie. What was then a novel idea seems tired and uninspired now, primarily because there's just almost nothing new about this entry. Same premise, same style, new and old characters, and only a "prequel" continuation of the story is all that's here. Somehow, the film redeems itself in the final few minutes, at least in terms of setting up a third movie and piquing the curiosity, but fulfilling that curiosity just might not be worth the effort if Paranormal Activity 3 is going to follow the same formula so exactly. Maybe in the third one the doorbell can ring a few times -- only there won't be anyone at the door! Aaaaahhhh!!! Paramount's Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 2 seems to replicate the film's visual and aural scheme perfectly. Flaws are readily evident, but they're part of the experience; no need to trash the technical merits if they're faithfully replicating the source. The real shame is the lack of extra content
Paranormal Activity 3 might shed some more light on the running story, but it still favors the same dark nighttime static shots that define the series. Kudos for advancing a real plot in a Horror franchise, but thumbs down to a lack of stylistic vision. The movie suffers because audiences know exactly the kind of thing that's coming, which indeed holds true for many Horror pictures, but this series doesn't even try to shake things up, instead content to stay with the same exact format that's quickly grown stale. REVENGE AND VIOLENCE

Savages boils down to a revenge film, but it's tarted up with so many extraneous plot machinations and stylistic flashiness that the grittiness of the core storyline gets lost at times. Still, this is one of Stone's most gorgeously shot recent films (if you don't mind the occasional decapitation, random shooting, and body being set on fire). The film is relentlessly breathless, which actually helps it overcome some of its dramatic stumbles, but its attempts to briefly interject some humor (mostly courtesy of Travolta's character) never seem nearly as funny as del Toro and Hayek playing not just to the second balcony, but evidently to some far off planet. Those who can stomach the mayhem and who won't mind the logical inconsistencies of this film may want to check it out on style points alone. Others may want to recycle their old VHS of JFK instead—it actually makes more sense than this film a lot of the time.

Safe House doesn't distinguish itself or serve up any tasty spy-vs-spy surprises. But it's a decent genre pic, confidently shot and eagerly assembled, and it boasts performances from Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds that are worth the price of admission alone. Thankfully, though, Universal's Blu-ray release isn't quite so flawed. With an adrenaline-pumping video presentation, a pulse-pounding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track, and a solid selection of extras, fans will get plenty of bang for their high definition buck.

American Hustle wasn't the year's best picture, not at the Oscars and not on paper. It may be the year's most complete picture, however, a joyful yet serious film with complex characters and deep themes built into a buoyant period exterior. One may enjoy the film as a well constructed and endlessly entertaining superficial time killer or as a more thoughtful character study. Either way -- or both ways -- it's an unforgettable experience and one of the year's must-see movies. Sony's Blu-ray release of American Hustle features brilliant video and audio. Supplements are limited in number but satisfying in quality. Highly recommended.

Revenge of the Nerds is unabashedly juvenile at times, but it has a built in audience due to the fact that, to paraphrase one of the nerds in the film, "there are more of us than there are of you" (meaning the beautiful people like jocks and cheerleaders). That sweet undercurrent of underdogs coming out on top informs this film and provides the emotional component that helps to offset some iffy comedy. Carradine and Edwards are a lot of fun as the titular nerds, and the supporting cast is colorful and hyperbolic. This Blu-ray release sports generally very good to excellent technical specs, and comes Recommended.
