Great Android tablet, especially for the price!!

Acer - Iconia One 10 - 10.1 - Tablet - 32gb - White
I was curious to test out this new Acer Iconia One 10” tablet, as I had used an iPad some in the past, but never had tried an Android tablet. My wife just switched from a Windows phone to an Android, so I have become a little familiar with the Android OS.
My first impression was that this device had a nice feel – not as heavy as my old iPad2, but not flimsy feeling either. The screen is nice and bright, and seems fairly high-res. I don’t think it is quite as nice as the Retina screens, but then it is only $149 MSRP!
Acer does load some extra features that aren’t standard Android apps, and I’ll admit that none of them seemed that helpful. They can be removed if you want. It does come pre-loaded with the Microsoft Office Suite. Once I logged into my MS OneDrive account, I was able to access, open, and edit my documents. That is a great feature!
I tried streaming shows via Netflix and Hulu, and they all worked well. The picture was great with no hiccups, and the sound was good – but not great. Again, hard to complain at this price.
I was able to connect my Plantronics Bluetooth Legend earpiece, and it worked great for listening to the streaming shows. It also worked well for Skype calling.
Some apps did appear to launch a little slowly, but then again this doesn’t have the fastest processor available.
Overall – if you are looking for an Android tablet that can be used for web surfing, streaming, games, and even productivity apps like Word and Excel – this tablet is a great choice, especially in the “bang for the Buck” category!

Great vacuum for everything except heavy carpets.

I was anxious to unbox the new Rocket Complete Upright Vacuum with DuoClean, because I wanted to see how it compared to my trusty “D” vacuum that I’ve had for years.
At first glance it was very impressive, coming with four different attachments, several of which have brush add-ons. After a quick glance at the manual, I fired it up with the default motorized floor nozzle. I like the fact that the unit has both a soft roll and a brush roll, along with a two-speed selector switch.
Because the unit is so light, it didn’t seem to have enough cleaning power on the rug which my dogs leave rawhide bits on constantly. I think some extra weight in the nozzle unit would help. It did clean well on bare wood floors.
Also, I have not gotten used to the feel of pushing this unit, as it very different than a standard vacuum. The head pivots, and I haven’t gotten used to steering it yet.
However, I really like using the unit with the attachments on the wand. It worked great on my painted staircase, and the extra-long cord made it much easier to do the whole staircase. The variety of attachments is very nice, including a very long, thin tube for cleaning under your appliances!
You can also use the attachments directly on the motor section, without the long wand, making it perfect for tight spaces and especially for use in the car.
The vacuum appears to have very good suction, and the dust cup is very easy to empty. There is a filter on top of the motor that is very easy to access for cleaning.
I think this will be a great addition to my current vacuum, but I don’t think it could replace a standard full-size vacuum. I still can highly recommend it though, as it is very good at what it does.

Ninja Coffee Bar- Single Serve
As a gadget geek, I was very excited to receive the newest Ninja single-serve Coffee Bar. It is a very different animal than our other pod-based coffee maker. I like the fact that it can make several different sizes of cups, and it also uses standard ground coffee, so you can adjust the strength of the drink. The water container holds enough for several cups of coffee, so it doesn’t need to be filled each time.
It has adjustments that change from Classic Brew, to Rich Brew, to Over Ice Brew. It also has settings for concentrated brewing for specialty drinks and something they call “Café Forte”. The coolest feature is a swing-out arm with a frother for your milk. This lets you make specialty drinks like Lattes.
There are some features that I still haven’t used. And I have spent more time with the owner’s manual than for any gadget in recent memory.
Finally, as a non-coffee drinker, I have to rely on the opinions of my family to tell me how good the coffees taste. We recently made several extra strength decaffeinated cups for my in-laws, and they loved the flavor. Everyone that I have made coffee for so far has loved it, so I can highly recommend this Ninja Coffee Bar.

This Belkin charging stand works great with both my iPhone 6 and my Apple Watch. I was first impressed by the weight of the unit when unboxing it - it is quite heavy, which makes it very stable.
The cradle has a thumbwheel on the back to adjust the height of the Lightning connector, which is a nice feature. I did encounter an issue when using an Otterbox Defender case –it never quite made a solid connection. When I switched to my normal thinner skin-type case it worked well.
The Apple Watch connector works well, and charges quickly. One feature that would make it even better would be an adjustable arm for the watch, allowing it to pivot into “Bedside” mode. This would make the unit even more functional.
All-in-all though, it is a well designed and built unit. I am glad I got one to test and review.

Great headphones for working out

I was excited to try out these new Wireless headphones from Bose - I've always been a fan of their products.
They were worth the wait - the sound quality is fantastic, as long as you realize that they do allow outside sounds in also. And that is what helps makes them great for exercising. I don't want to be totally blocked off while i'm out walking.
They stay in the ears well, and as I walk instead of running, I haven't experienced some of the slipping issues other have seen.
I have had no issues pairing these with my iPhone 6, and the BT range also seems very good.
Yes, they are pricey, but it does ssem you get what you pay for with these Bose SoundSport Wireless headphones!

Best Router I have ever used!

This EA9500 router replaced a Cisco/Linksys e1200 in my two-story 2500+ square foot house. The e1200 had been doing a good job, but I occasionally had trouble getting a strong signal on the 2nd floor on the side furthest from the router.
After unboxing the AC5400, unplugging the e1200, and clearing a space in my cabinet for the new router (it’s BIG!) I had it up and running in just a couple of minutes. The antennas (all 8 of them) are easily adjustable, which is good because they were too tall for the space I had. :)
I am now able to get a 5 bar out of 5 connection on my upstairs Blu-Ray player, and every device I have is connecting at a faster speed than before. My old router only had 2.4 GHz, so the microwave oven always caused issues. This one has 2.4 GHz PLUS two separate 5 GHz bands, so that issue is gone for my newer devices. And the Device Map feature on the router is great, as it shows all of the online (and offline if you want) devices that are connected, and what band they are connected to. I never realized I had 15 devices in my house!!
You can prioritize bandwidth for specific devices, so I set all three of our Roku boxes to be highest priority. No one wants their binge watching to buffer! :)
I also tested the parental controls, which can block traffic by individual device; for certain times; or even for specific websites. May not need that much, but it does work well.
There is also a guest account available, to prevent folks from accessing your PCs and data while still getting connectivity.
You can also access the router remotely, and Linksys has free app for SmartPhones to make that easier.
Other features that I would like to test, but haven’t had the chance – USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the rear, which would be perfect for sharing a printer and a storage drive.
I cannot recommend this router enough – it has surpassed all my expectations! If you have a lot of devices, do a lot of streaming and/or gaming, or have a large area to cover – pick up the Linksys EA9500 Max-Stream Router!!

I used this RE7000-AC1900 range extender at my church (where I am the IT guy) to help with wi-fi coverage in the basement. Our current Netgear router does good job on the first floor, but has trouble getting much coverage downstairs.
I plugged the extender into an outlet inside the electrical/HVAC room, essentially directly below the room where the router is. It picked up the signal just fine, and then created a new SSID with "_ext" at the end. It did pull the same password from the router for this new SSID.
The box advertised "Seamless Routing" (i.e. same SSID's) with "supported routers". The instructions gave a URL to go to find a list of those routers, but that URL just redirected to the Linksys support page. I tried calling the included "early user" helpline that came on a slip of paper in the box, but that just routed to the standard Linksys call center.
Since the manual didn't explain how to set up Seamless Routing, I poked around on the web page for the extender. In the section where you could pick speed and security settings, it also showed the SSID name. There was a checkbox above this section titled "Make the same as my router". Once selected and saved, the extender rebooted, and then I was only seeing one SSID instead of the original one and the EXT one.
So, this product works well, and as advertised, but it takes a little effort to find the right setting!
Highly recommended for situations where you need more Wi-Fi coverage, and especially when you may have a bunch of users and you don't want to make them switch networks as they roam.

We recently decided to "cut the cable", and just stream our entertainment. We have a small HTPC, but it is awkward to use, even with a wireless keyboard and mouse. We were also using a 4-year-old Roku XD, but when I looked at the specs and interface for the Roku 3, I decided to make the switch.
Glad I did! This box is much faster and smoother, and makes it easy to stream from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and CBS. Highly recommend the Roku 3 if you want the best streaming media experience.

We are on the AT&T Family Share plan, and my wife was in need of a new phone. We had 3 choices - Pay an extra $25 per month on a 2-year contract, lease a phone from AT&T (for at least $15 a month), or bring your own phone. This GoPhone allowed us to get her a smartphone at no extra cost per month.
The BestBuy Mobile rep helped us moved her MicroSIM card over, and then imported all of her contacts from her old flip phone.
While this is considered a "basic" Windows Phone, it does everything she needs and more. The call quality is great, and she was able to get used to the "tile" layout of the OS very quickly. She doesn't need a ton of apps, but has been able to find everything she wants.
While the phone doesn't have a "selfie" camera, she truly didn't want one! The processor is fast, and the phone does not feel or run like a "cheap" phone. We got it on sale for $75, which was a great deal.

ROKU 3 vs. ROKU 2SX
What are the benefits of the NEW ROKU 3 over the ROKU 2XS version (mine is 2-3 years old)?
I believe the processor is faster, which makes things runs smoother. It has the latest Wi-Fi, plus an ethernet port. Does the 2XS have Ethernet?
