Great Shaver for My Fine-Haired Mug
on December 30, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
I’m not a particularly hairy guy, & I don’t have a thick, coarse, stubbly beard. My facial hair is soft & baby fine, & it grows slowly. In fact, it can take me a full week to achieve the 5 o’clock shadow-look that my wife likes, whereas some guys can grow that look in just 1 day. Given that I have such a light beard, I’ve always been surprised by the difficulty I’ve had in obtaining a close shave w/an electric shaver, even after dozens of passes, whether w/new shavers or older shavers fitted w/new replacement blades. In fact, the number of passes that I’ve typically had to make under my jawline & down my neck has been so time-consuming & irritating to my skin, that I’d finally begun shaving just once/week w/a disposable razor, & then growing a 5 o’clock shadow the remainder of the week.
Enter the Norelco Tripleheader 7100 Shaver. From the moment I picked up this shaver, it felt comfortable in my hand as I guided it over my face & beard. That’s probably because it reminds me of my old Norelco Model 1090X Arcitec Rechargeable Razor that I’ve used on & off since Nov. 2007. That 13-yr.-old triple-headed shaver is similar in form factor, except that all 3 of its shaving heads are mounted on a flat/level plane, vs. this new 7100, which juxtaposes all 3 angular-mounted shaving heads so that, as a unit, they form a slightly curved dome. Then, this curved dome of shaving heads is mounted atop a pivoting base, which enables the independent heads to closely follow the contours of my face. The shaving heads are surrounded w/something Norelco calls “ComfortGlide” rings, which have a special protective, anti-friction coating that provide skin-gliding properties to help shield my face from irritation. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how little skin irritation I’ve experienced, whether dry- or wet-shaving. I assume this is also due, in part, to the “SenseIQ” intelligent sensor that reportedly reads facial hair density 125x/sec. & auto-adapts the cutting power during the blades’ reported 90k cutting actions/min. In an effort to dial in an optimal, customized shaving experience, I also downloaded Philips Norelco’s GroomTribe app (available for Android & iPhone) & connected the shaver via Bluetooth. The more I use this device, the more I realize that this is a rather ingeniously designed little hi-tech shaver, especially given its mid-low-price range. Refreshingly, it’s made in the Netherlands instead of China. All this smart technology delivers a closer shave w/far fewer passes required than any of my previous Norelco electric shavers.
To be sure, there are higher end electric shavers available that include more bells & whistles, including Philips Norelco’s own S9000 Prestige Qi-Charge Electric Shaver & Braun’s Series 9 Wet/Dry Electric Shaver, to name just a couple. And you’ll pay 3x the price for those vs. this little shaver. But if you’re into pure functionality, & you don’t need all the extra fancy features, this shaver gets the job done. And, surprisingly, the close shave I’m getting w/this unit is achievable whether dry-shaving over the bathroom sink or wet-shaving in the shower. This is a departure from what I’m used to. In the past, my electric shavers were dry shavers used before or after my shower.
I also like the ergonomics of this shaver. Unlike some competing brand shavers w/wide, bulky, metal mesh screens, the 7100’s shaving heads are much more maneuverable, allowing me to get into creases & tight spots between my upper lip & nose. The shaver fits comfortably in my hand, & the raised rubber pattern along the upper sides provides a no-slip grip. The hardware’s sleek silver & black straight-line casing provides an appealingly clean, minimalist look. And the intuitive white LED icons embedded in the flush front screen present a tasteful, understated display.
This unit also comes w/a pop-up trimmer for sideburns & mustache, a tiny cleaning brush, & a std. a/c charging cord for the shaver’s lithium ion rechargeable battery. You don’t want to forget to recharge the battery because, if you’re in a rush & the battery’s dead, you can’t plug in the shaver into the a/c wall outlet to operate it directly. But a 5-min. quick charge will give you enough juice for 1 shave. Otherwise, a std. 1-hr. charge will provide a total of 1 hr. of shaving (about 20 3-min. shaves). There’s no travel bag or charging cradle included, but I’m not a fan of cradles, anyway, as they take up limited countertop space, occupy precious a/c wall outlets, & collect dust. I do like the 1-touch flip-open shaving head which allows for easy access to the blades & a quick post-shave cleaning rinse. Comes w/2-yr. warranty.
If there’s a knock on this shaver, it’s that while I’m shaving, it doesn’t feel all that substantial. It’s lightweight & has a little bit of a cheap, plasticky feel/sound to it as I roll it over my face. But if you can get past that, this little smart razor really shaves well. The bottom line: I get a quick & efficient shave, wet or dry, w/easy cleanup, & all for a remarkably affordable price. Although I tend to gravitate towards more expensive, higher-end tools, I’m really impressed w/this shaver. I’ll be interested to see if its 45 high-performance, self-sharpening blades provide the promised, consistently close shave over the coming yr. (Philips Norelco recommends buying a replacement head every yr., although I hope I can stretch that, given that the slower growth rate of my facial hair doesn’t really require daily shaver use.) Based on my initial impressions as of this writing, I rate this shaver a “strong buy”.

Brighten the night & scare away the critters
on November 3, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
We started with the basic two-camera Arlo Pro 2 system almost three years ago. Then we added two Arlo Pro 3 cameras a year ago, so it was a no-brainer to try out the new Essential Spotlight camera. Both the Arlo 2 & Arlo 3’s have proven to be durable & reliable. They’re all mounted outdoors 24/7/365 & have never failed regardless of temperature or weather. Only once in a great while one of them may fog a bit in extreme humidity.
Setup: We already have the Arlo SmartHub (aka Base Station) & the App, so it was a snap to connect the newest camera to our current system. It also has an option to connect directly to WiFi.
Mounting: Very easy, no wires. The camera comes with 1 adjustable wall mount & screw kit. Unfortunately, it does not have the magnetic mount option like the Arlo 2 & 3 have.
Video: The 1080p video quality is very good and the field of view is wide (130 degrees and can be adjusted down if needed). The microphone picks up sound clearly. At close range, as with a front door/porch mount, you can hear a visitor speak loud & clear. I can even pick up chatter from across the street.
Night Vision: The color night vision is very good, but not as good as the Arlo 3. Color video is only viewable when the spotlight is engaged. If the spotlight is off, the video is black & white.
Spotlight: The powerful spotlight is a great feature. You can adjust the brightness as well as the behavior (Constant, Flash or Pulsate). The spotlight will activate every time it senses activity and stay illuminated while recording. When ‘Live Viewing’, you can turn on the spotlight at any time. I often see small animals run away when the light startles them.
Big Negative: The main reason we ditched ADT was to save on the monthly fees. The greatest disappointment with the Arlo Essential (& Arlo Pro 3) is the required monthly fee for the Arlo Smart Plan (90-day free trial is included). The Arlo Pro 2 system does not require a Smart Plan to view your video clips, but the Essential camera & Arlo Pro 3 cameras will not allow you to view any of your own videos unless you are subscribed to a plan. So, you will receive an alert via the Arlo App, but you won’t be able to view any video. Instead, it would be nice to have the same option that’s available with the Arlo Pro 2, which offers the Arlo Basic Plan that allows users to view all video recordings for 7 days before they can no longer be viewed via the App.
Overall: The Essential Spotlight is a nice addition to an existing Arlo system, but it could also serve as an affordable solo unit. It’s very similar in size & features to the Arlo 3, but with lower video quality & a lesser field of view. If you’re willing to subscribe to one of the Smart Plans after the 90-day free trial, you can enjoy amazing features like Advanced Object Detection (lets you know if it’s a person, a car or an animal), Intelligent Alerts, Package delivery & cloud storage among others.

Simple, Compact 2.1 System Does the Job
on November 1, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
Background: We’ve been using Logitech products since 2008 & have enjoyed a combined total of at least a dozen Logitech mice, keyboards, speaker systems, & gaming hardware over the last decade+. Given that I purchased a Logitech Z-5500 Dolby Digital (DTS/THX-Cert.) 5.1 Surround Sound 505W Speaker System for my wife’s home office back in 2009, which she’s still enjoying to this day, she decided to return the favor by ordering a Logitech speaker system for my little Dell All-in-One (AiO) desktop. Enter the affordable, compact Z407 2.1 speaker system.
Initial Reaction: My wife had just completed the easy 10-min. setup of these new speakers when I walked into my den, & she hit “Play”. That’s when I heard the distinct guitars & thumping bass emanating from my PC as she streamed Adani & Wolf’s rich instrumental, Wings of Santa Lucia. I confess; I couldn’t stop smiling. I’d forgotten just how much I enjoy taking an occasional break & being able to hear good music thru my computer.
Setup: Initially, my wife connected the speakers to my PC via Bluetooth. While the wireless pairing was simple & quick, after witnessing the lag between audio & video, I was immediately persuaded to go w/a wired option. And although the 3.5mm connection worked fine, I like to keep my AiO display’s 3.5mm jack free for headphones. In the end, I connected the speakers via the 3rd remaining option—using my own USB cable. (Unfortunately, Logitech does not include this cable.) I simply ran the cable from the USB port on my PC to the micro-USB port on the subwoofer.
Speakers: While these little speakers include digital signal processing (DSP) & a downward firing subwoofer, they’re admittedly underpowered w/just 80W peak power, 40W continuous/RMS, & 20W bass. They’re obviously not designed for audiophiles. But if you have limited desk space & you’d like something at a low price pt. that sounds a lot better than your avg. desktop monitor’s typically lame resident speakers, then this little system will do the job for you. And you can also use these speakers w/your Bluetooth- &/or 3.5mm-jack-enabled smartphone, tablet, or laptop. The twin, lightweight, matte graphite gray satellite speakers can be positioned vertically or horizontally, using their included stands. I chose the vertical option w/the smaller footprint to conserve space atop my Varidesk.
Audio Controller: As for the controller, I’m not a fan. I’ve already had plenty of experience w/this type of remote-control disk w/a previous competing 2.1 computer speaker system that I bought way back in 2008. It was a wired disk controller that illuminated when touched, whereas Logitech’s wireless disk controller (operates on 2 AAA batteries) doesn’t illuminate the controls which are located atop the disk. So, if you’re gaming or streaming movies, music videos, or podcasts in low-light conditions, it can be a challenge to operate even the simple functions of playing/pausing, skipping/rewinding, muting/un-muting, & controlling volume/bass, especially if you remove the clear stick-on “cheat sheet” overlay from the top of the control hub. Overall, the audio control pod has a bit of a cheap, clunky, plasticky feel, & not all the controls are as consistently responsive as I’d hoped they'd be when I press on the disk. (The “Rewind” symbol, for example, at least on my hub, doesn’t provide a confirming tactile detent.) I do like the popup controller options that appear on my display w/my USB connectivity, but I wish there were more audio control options, such as an equalizer, though that may be too much to ask at this price pt. When it comes to a separate hardware controller, I think I’d much prefer a small, traditional handheld remote control (preferably lighted).
Bottom Line: This little 2.1 Bluetooth computer speaker system offers some good, punchy bass & adequate midrange & treble. Overall, it offers a good value for a compact system at this price pt. If you have limited space &/or a limited budget, & you’d like modern-looking, aesthetically-pleasing desktop speakers that provide a much better sound than the vast majority of desktop monitor-resident speakers, then this is a good option.

Simple Yet Powerful
on October 30, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
I’ve been able to use this immersion blender for about a week. So far, it’s proven to be a strong performer and a real threat to my older, higher-end blender that I’ve had for about 2 years. The Vitamix has shown itself to be every bit as powerful.
We make a lot of smoothies & soups, but we also have a family member that requires meals through a feeding tube; so, our blenders get a serious workout. This Vitamix has been able to handle everything from a bullet-proof coffee, to cauliflower mash, to fruit smoothies, to full meal blends.
The unit comes with one removable/washable bladed wand, & there are no additional attachments. I like the simplicity of the controls. The handle is very ergonomic & fits my hand perfectly, making it easy to hold the power button while maneuvering the stick. It has 5 speeds, but I rarely have to use max power. The bell guard is made of a hard plastic, which is a nice feature. I can freely use as much pressure as I need without worrying about scratching my pans or containers vs. my current unit which is stainless steel and can leave scratches.
Big Negative: The cord. While it could be that I’m just spoiled from using my cordless blender for so long, I find the cord on the Vitamix annoying. Although it’s 5 ft long, which is plenty of length for most kitchens, I constantly have to use my free hand to hold the cord up & out of the way. It’s especially a problem when using it on the stovetop.
Big Plus: The bell guard’s unique design prevents the blade from creating too much suction. If you’ve ever had to clean up the splatter from a sudden release of suction while blending a soup or a green juice in a mason jar, you’ll really appreciate this unit.

Panasonic hit a Home Run with the HomeChef!
on October 17, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye

Looks: The beautiful stainless steel sleek, modern minimalist design looks fantastic!
Size: The glass turntable is just over 14”. Plenty of room for a large pizza. Also, I was able to spread out 2 large sweet potato cut fries in one layer in the air-fryer basket.
Controls: The controls are simple looking (just 6 buttons & a dial); however, I had to rely heavily on the User Manual (paper copy included) to operate each function. Not entirely intuitive, but the more I use it, the less I need to refer back to the Manual.
Function: I’ve never had an appliance that could microwave AND bake. This is amazing! It can Broil, Air Fry, Convection Bake & Microwave. The Microwave is a bit more powerful than my old unit (which I’m happily sending to the dump). The Sensor Reheat option is wonderful! You can place a cold, previously cooked item inside, press the dial/start, & it will automatically sense when to stir & when to stop heating.
I didn’t have much success with the AirFry function. I tried it with some fresh sweet potato fries using the AirFry Chart in the manual. They came out golden brown & evenly cooked, but not crispy at all (except at the very tips). They were actually a little rubbery on the outside & mushy on the inside. Definitely could not have cooked them any longer (28 min with 30-40min recommended). I’ll withhold judgement on that function until I try again as it could be user error. :-)
The Convection Bake mode truly shines. Everything I’ve tried comes out evenly cooked & actually better than my gas oven. A prime example is bacon. I always have to flip & turn the bacon strips in my gas oven to get them evenly cooked. I didn’t have to make any adjustments with this oven. You do need to adjust your recipes if you’re not used to convection however. It requires much less cooking time than a conventional oven.
Overall: Combining the beautiful appearance with all the cooking functions needed in a standard kitchen & Panasonic’s reputation for durability, this oven gets 5 stars all the way.

Cut the Noise & Sleep (or Study) Like a Pro
on October 17, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
I’ve been using the original version of Bose Sleepbuds for a couple of years & have found them to be comfortable, durable & helpful. The Sleepbuds II are even better!
Setup: As usual, Bose makes setup super easy. The start-up guide leads you to download the Bose Sleep App & walks you through every simple step. It’s very quick, does not require setting up an account or Login (which is great!) & pairs with the App/device almost immediately.
App: The App comes loaded with a library of several categories of sounds to choose from (Noise Masking, Naturescapes, Tranquilities). There are also additional sounds that can be downloaded (at no charge). The App has been greatly improved over time & is fully customizable. You can set alarms & add a sleep timer. You can also use the Sleepbuds if your phone is off or in another room.
Comfort: As a side-sleeper who uses a firm memory-foam pillow, I was initially concerned about comfort. In the past, I found traditional foam ear plugs to be very uncomfortable. However, these Sleepbuds lay flat in the ear (not like most audio earbuds that protrude), & the material that touches your ear feels very soft & silky. I’ve never experienced discomfort or irritation even after a full night’s sleep.
Convenience: I used to lug around a white-noise machine when traveling. The Sleepbuds come in a very compact, secure case saving me valuable space & weight. I also use them for work & study. It’s so much easier to just pop them in when I need to concentrate, rather than searching for a YouTube “study music” video to drown out the noise.

Maid In A Box!
on September 18, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
This really is a game changer! I’ve had a slightly lower quality robot vacuum for about a year. It lacked suction power, & I absolutely dreaded having to empty the bin and wipe out the dust & debris after each run. This i3+ with the self-emptying bin is a dream. I can create a cleaning schedule & forget about it. I wasn’t able to do that with my old robot vac since it had to be manually emptied between each run.
Out of the box, setup was a snap. Nothing to attach or screw on. Just unwrap & plug it in. Mine was almost fully charged, so it only took a few minutes to get to 100%. If you don’t have time to download the App, you can just press the “Clean” button to send it on its way.
I was impressed with the suction power. I have dark hardwood floors, so it’s very easy to see debris. My floors were spotless after one pass and, so far, it’s able to run for about 1 hr. before returning to the charger to empty the bin.
While the bin is emptying, it makes a very loud roaring noise. Not quite as loud as a space shuttle launch, but close. Best to keep small children & pets away during that short process. Frankly, I don’t care how loud it is if it relieves me of having to empty the bin.
The iRobot Home App needs work. I initially had no trouble downloading the App, creating an account & connecting to the vac. Then the App began crashing. After a dozen attempts, uninstalling & reinstalling on 3 different devices, I had success. It’s working fine now & is very handy. You can do things like: start the vac remotely, create a schedule, view the history (which includes a map of the cleaned area) & set favorites.
I’m still going to give it 5 stars because the vac itself is so fantastic that it outweighs the minor issue with the App. I’m sure the developer can work out the kinks on the App over time.

Definitely Improves Recovery
on September 14, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
Requires no setup. Out of the box, it came charged & ready to go. It comes with a Quick Start Guide, but I would recommend downloading the manual from the Compex website in order to understand the settings options.
Ease of use: Super easy & fast! Just slip them on like a normal boot, zip up the calf area, fasten the 3 velcro straps around the thigh area and press the start button. The default setting will begin inflating the foot area, followed by the lower calf chamber, then upper calf, then thigh area. It feels just like a blood pressure cuff. It will hold at the fully inflated point for 10 sec, then deflate for 1 min. and re-start the cycle. The Control Unit makes a quiet beeping noise between cycles & a low motorized sound while inflating.
The controls are very simple. There are 2 options for inflating the chambers: one-by-one or all at once. You can also change the pressure of each chamber & it will remember your last setting. This is a great feature that allows you to target a problem area.
I’ve been using it after long runs & after leg-day workouts. I have one calf that’s giving me trouble, so I’ve increased the pressure in that chamber to isolate the problem area. I’ve been using it for 30-min. intervals post-workout and definitely feel a difference in recovery time. It’s most noticeable the next day when I would normally be more fatigued & sore. Besides the physical improvement, I use that time to mentally relax as well. If it included a massage feature, I’d give it 5 stars.

Can’t go wrong with APC
on August 24, 2020
Posted by: CriticalEye
from Franklin, TN USA
I’ve used Back-UPS for many years & am partial to APC. They always shine in quality & dependability. This 650VA 7-outlet unit doesn’t disappoint. It’s an economical choice with enough outlets to protect all the basics for home or office. I’m able to plug in my PC, monitor, printer, scanner, speakers & calculator.
We have new on-going construction nearby & lose power every other week or so. Having a battery backup has become an absolute necessity. I happened to be nearby when we lost power the last time. I heard the APC unit start beeping & it gave me plenty time to save my open work, close all my programs & shut down properly. Nightmare averted! I’m sure this will also extend the life of my equipment with all the power surges we experience.
The only negative: Due to large plugs on a couple of cords, I lose the ability to utilize all 7 outlets. The outlet spacing is stretched on one end, but not enough to accommodate more than one large plug. You’ll want to take in inventory of your cords & plugs when deciding which unit to select.

Say Hello to My Little Friend!

I absolutely dread having to drag out my upright vacuum for small jobs. It’s such a hassle to roll it out of the closet, unwrap the long cord, detach the hose & pull out the extender handle for a 2 minute task, then have to put it all back again. Oh how I wish I’d had this little tool years ago.
This Hand Vac is lightweight, yet powerful. It has a nice extender, with an easy-flip brush on the end (perfect for baseboards). It’s long enough to reach into ceiling corners, and the best part is … it’s cordless! We have a serious spider problem in the summer and now I can get rid of the pesky critters in a snap. This is a tool that everyone could use, so it’s going to be one of my go-to gifts for weddings, birthdays & Christmas.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e delivers the fastest speeds, 500-sheet paper capacity, and up to 2x faster scan speeds. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.

Can it print wireless from a Samsung Galaxy Book S

As long as your device can download the HP Smart App, you should be fine. The App will let you know if the device is incompatible. I tried it on an old Samsung Note 3 and it let me know the device was too old.
Hope that helps.

I live in an apartment with the loudest bunch of people above me,Do you think it might mask a dog's bark?Or loud thuds? Thanks!

I have loud screaming children & mowers nearby on a regular basis. These definitely help mask those sounds enough to sleep & study through.
Not sure what you can do about the loud thuds though as that's something you usually feel as well as hear.
Hope that helps :-)

Can they play the music on your phone

They don't play music that's stored in your device. You can select sounds & study-type music from a library available within the free App.
Hope that helps :-)

Sleep better. Cover unwanted noise with soothing sounds. Bose noise-masking sleepbuds™ are uniquely designed for sleep. They don’t stream music or have acoustic noise cancellation. Instead, these tiny, wireless earbuds use pre-loaded, soothing sounds to cover up unwanted noises, so you can get to sleep — and stay asleep. Plus, unlike traditional earplugs, they’re super comfortable and made to stay in place all night long, even if you sleep on your side. 1. Choose your sound, 2. Set an alarm, 3. Fall asleep without unwanted noise.

How will these work against Smoke Detectors etc in case of emergencies?

The sound volume is customizable, so you could test them against any noise you want to be aware of. However, even with the volume up, I've had no trouble hearing loud sounds. Hope that helps.
