The best noise canceling earbuds for gaming

The Sony InZone Buds is a unique set of earbuds that solves for me a unique problem: long playing times. Traditional over the head gaming headsets tend to overheat my head and prevent me from playing games for a long time. The Sony InZone Buds solves this by proving lightweight sound machine that does not actually touch your face, miraculously stays put in your ear once you find the right ear tip, and my head is still cool. Moreover, the battery life using the low latency USB-c dongle is impressive. Sony claims 12 hours of continuous use, but in my test, the combination of the battery life on the Buds and the charging case, I have lasted over a week with usage. Using the dongle as the audio interface, there are no audio lags that are typically found in traditional Bluetooth headsets. What you see is what you hear. This is a game changer for wireless gaming. In addition, Sony uses the same speakers as found in their premium earbud offerings, so you get very good high-fidelity audio. Everything sounds crystal clear including the highs, lows, and mediums. They lack the punchy bass that you typically get with “cans” on your head, but making sure you have a tight seal in your earbuds and a bit of EQ tweaking using the InZone app on the PC, and you will be comfortable listening all day. Active Noise Canceling is amazing. Turn it on and the only thing you can hear is people’s voices. It is truly on par with all of Sony’s other’s active noise canceling headphones. A common misconception is that ANC blocks everything out. If you are looking for that, this is not it. What this headphone excels at is blocking out all the external low frequencies and a lot of the middle frequencies. You won’t hear fan noise, people walking around you, people dropping things, but you will hear the voices on the TV near you and babies crying. So, these buds do a great job of only letting in the vocal frequencies. Ambient Mode is the one I prefer using because as a married person who games on the couch next to my wife and having kids doing kids things in the house, it’s important for me to also be able to hear what the people around me are doing or breaking. What is impressive is the clarity of the ambient mode that makes it sound like I am not wearing earbuds at all. The only negative I have with the Sony InZone Buds is the limited Bluetooth connectivity. I know Sony wants to market these as low latency earbuds using the included transmitter and does not want people to be unimpressed with the lag in the Bluetooth protocol, but it would have been nice to have more Bluetooth compatibility. It would have been nice to carry these earbuds everywhere I go, not just in front of a PS5 or PC. I have not been able to get the Buds paired properly with any phone I have (Google Pixel 7 Pro, or iPhone 15) and reproduce sound. On my android phone, it will pair, but does not produce any sound and will just disconnect after a few minutes. If I use the included dongle on my Android phone, it works fine. I understand that Sony is marketing this as a wireless gaming headset for the PS5 and PC but would have been nice to just carry these around and listen to music and YouTube on my phone without risking damage to the dongle. All in all, for PC and PS5 gaming, this is a very premium feature rich set of in ear buds and you will not be disappointed in them. Superior Noise Cancellation and great sound built for comfort.

Definitely the Watch to get if you like Fitbit

The Google Pixel Watch 2 is a modest upgrade to the original Pixel watch, but now feels like the watch that Google should have released in the first place. The biggest improvement is the battery life. Without Always on Display, the Pixel Watch 2 will last 2 days before needing to be put on the charger. With Always on Display, you can easily make it over a full day before needing to be charged. Another feature of this watch is that Google is now using Aluminum materials instead of the last generation’s stainless steel. It really is only a 5-gram savings in weight but after wearing it for long periods of time while working out, it just feels better. Another reason for potential battery savings is that Google upgraded to using a quad-core processor instead of the previous dual-core processor. This theoretically allows the process to finish quicker than before and newer chipsets are just more energy efficient. Having both the original Pixel Watch and this newer Pixel Watch 2, scrolling between screens and widgets just feels quicker and smoother. One of the knocks on the previous generation of Pixel Watches was the lack of full Fitbit on the watch. It incorporated some but always felt like it was lacking Fitbit features. Now the Pixel Watch 2 includes new sensors on the watch that automatically detect your stress levels and heart rate and alert you if you are out of your normal ranges. This enhances the value of the Pixel Watch 2 because it acts like an additional set of eyes on your heath. The original Pixel Watch had ECG capabilities, but it was difficult to use and only works on demand. The new Pixel Watch 2 automatically runs the ECG periodically and notifies you if it detects an irregular heart rhythm. Again, this allows you to worry about one less thing to do on your watch. The other improvement the Pixel Watch 2 has over its predecessor is Automatic Workout Detection. Before you had to trigger the activity on the watch. Now if you start running, it will automatically track your workout. The one big knock I have on this watch is the new charging dongle. It is true that moving away from wireless charging to charging with pins that provide metal on metal contact with the charging base and the watch lets it charge slightly faster. However, the watch now only charges in one direction. Try and put it on the charger in any orientation besides the correct orientation and the magnet just pushes the watch off. Also, the charging base is smaller than the previous charging base and is not backwards compatible. So, if you had any charging accessories for the previous generation of Pixel Watch, you would just have to throw it away and reinvest in the new charger. What would have been great was if you could charge the watch in any orientation if the pins align on the charger and watch. With the Pixel Watch 2 configuration, the crown button must align with the wire coming out of the charging base. Besides The charging annoyance, the Pixel Watch 2 is one of the best smartwatches out there because it looks like a watch. Sure, it would have been nicer to see a potentially larger screen size, I feel like the size is nice and not intrusive.

The JBL Authentics 300 portable smart speaker is something you will want to get if you want a loud, clear, and punchy speaker that has a style that is very unique in a market full of Wi-Fi/Bluetooth speakers. Just on the looks along, it screams classy retro with the wrapped leather sides and handle, retro looking grill, large volume/treble/bass knobs which add to the old school look. Picking up the speaker by the handle and you realize that this is no toy. A nice healthy weight to the package that will prevent the speaker from bouncing around when you are blaring the speaker. Bring this speaker outdoors and you will have no problem letting the neighborhood know what your musical tastes are.
The most important part of a speaker is sound quality, and the JBL Acoustics 300 does not disappoint. Scroll through your Spotify playlists of rock, hip hop, rap, country, EDM and this speaker reproduces a loud projection with clarity. This this speaker has a down firing passive speaker and produces incredible bass if it is position correctly. If you suspend the speaker in the air, there is not much bass. Position the speaker on a hard floor in the corner of a few walls and be prepared to turn the bass down. All this while still maintaining accurate highs and lows. Again, everything about this speaker denotes premium feel and sound.
The JBL Authentics 300 comes built in with both Google Home and Amazon Alexa. So, if your music service works with either Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you can just ask it to start playing because it is Wi-Fi connected. The JBL One app allows you to ensure the firmware is up to date and gives you more fine tuning of the different settings of the speaker such as EQ.
Again, the two main reasons why you would get this speaker, sound and aesthetics, the JBL Authentics 300 does extremely well in a very portable package. Leave it plugged in or unplug it and bring it with you anywhere you want a conversation starter and amazing sound quality. It has been a week of usage and there are no signs of the battery dying early.

Creator Edition is a must have on you everywhere

The GoPro Hero12 Black Creator Edition has everything you need to start creating amazing videos indoors and out. The Hero12 Black takes clear up to 5k video outdoors and surprisingly has a decent amount of battery life. However, with the Creator Edition package, you get the magic lies in the Volta Battery Grip. With the battery grip connected to the Hero12 Black using USB-c connection, you get hours and hours of recording time. The limiting factor will be your microSD card size. The Creator Edition also includes the Media Mod which opens an additional mic that gives you better audio capture than the onboard mic of the Hero12. On top of that, a Light Mod is included which means this package is the ideal package for conducting interviews anywhere and not only useful in action sports. This will be a portable high-definition video creation tool on the go without the bulky equipment. Oh, and by the way, you can pair a Bluetooth headset to the Hero12 to capture your voice such as Airpods or Pixel Buds. The HyperSmooth video stabilization is amazing for the little package that it comes in and can all be stored in the included stiff shell case. One thing I did end up purchasing extra is a very short right-angled USB-c Male to Female adapter because I did not like the torque the USB-c connector of the Volta Grip was putting on the USB-c port on the Media Mod. Since the cord is coiled, it is pulling on the connector which made be feel a bit uncomfortable with the longevity of the USB-c port. Also, when you are not using the Hero12, don’t leave the Volta grip plugged into the Hero12, it will continuously drain the Volta Grip Battery. Overall, the Creator Edition just enhances the value that the GoPro Hero12 Black already has in terms of video quality, stabilization, and portability. With the Creator Edition, it makes the GoPro Hero12 package a must carry everywhere because of how versatile the package makes recording high-def videos anywhere so easy.

Portable and reliable SD and microSD card reader

The Insignia SD Card and microSD card does exactly what it is supposed to do in a compact easily packable form factor and it does it well. Reading microSD card is quick and is recognized by Windows 10 and Windows 11 machines no problem. The reader makes transferring files from things such as dashcam or action camera to your computer super easy. Everything is plug and play and carrying this around with you for your cameras helps eliminate messy wires to get things off your device. This reader also helps expedite transferring files from your computer to the SD cards for things such as 3D filament printers or 3D resin printers. Overall, this performs the task of reading SD and microSD cards flawlessly and also writes to these cards perfectly. I have seen many readers have compatibilty issues with Windows computers before and this reader is not one of them. Having transferred nearly a few terabytes of data between GoPro cameras, DSLRs, and dashcams, I have not had one single issue with any file transferred. I would not hesitate in keeping a few of these readers around the house and on the go.

The Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 laptop is a very capable gaming laptop that handles everything you throw at it. While playing games, you can tell how smooth everything is using the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 graphics card. Every game played on this laptop works wonderfully thanks to the graphics card and the ample 16 GB of RAM and Intel i5 13500HX processor. Games such as Street Fighter VI and Call of Duty run no problems. The 16-inch screen feels much bigger than it is. The keys feel very responsive and accurate yet keep their low profile. The backlit keyboard is the right color. Black keys with colored letters allowing them to be easily seen during the day or at night. The refresh rate of the laptop helps with smooth gaming. Given the specs of this laptop, it is surprisingly not that hot after playing games for hours. One knock I have on this laptop is the lack of a secondary NVMe hard drive slot to expand the disk space. There is only one NVMe slot and if you want to upgrade the hard drive, you will have to clone the hard drive using an external enclosure. So far, battery life is decent considering this is a gaming laptop. However, if you are planning on doing long sessions of gaming, you will have to lug around a large power supply. Nevertheless, this laptop packs a lot of performance for the value you pay.

The Corsair HS80 Max Wireless Gaming Headset has some nice features for a premium headset. The feel of the headset feels very solid and cushiony that is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The headset has a basic set of controls on it. Using the headset for a week straight, it appears to have plenty of battery left. Also, as a couch laptop gamer, I have no problem getting up and walking around the house with the headset still connected to the computer. That was using Bluetooth. Using the USB wireless receiver, I see the same distance walking around the house. Connecting the headset to a Nintendo Switch using the USB wireless receiver, I see the same distance to walk around the house and still connect to the Nintendo Switch. On Windows, using the USB Wireless Receiver unlocks the ability to use Dolby Digital plugin for headsets. Using Bluetooth, however, limits some of the capabilities of the headset. In order to use Corsair’s iCue app, you must connect to the computer using the USB wireless receiver. One feature that appears to be lacking is the ability to enable a mode to be aware of your surroundings. This means that in a certain mode, the headset microphone would allow some of the sound around you to be passed through into the headset such as people around you talking to you. As a married person with kids, it would be nice to be able to hear the high-quality sound on the headset but still hear the people around you. I have used other headsets that have this feature. However, if you are interested in just being focused on the game you are using or listening to music and videos, this headset is great. It does feel like for the price of this headset, it should have every feature possible or at least have more abilities to unlock features using the iCue app.

Best bang for the buck self-emptying robot vacuum

The Shark Matrix Self-Emptying robot is impressive compared to the mainstream robot manufacturer. The robot is not that loud and runs a cleaning cycle very fast. After the initial mapping of the cleaning area, it then optimizes the cleaning path to finish the cycle quickly. In fact, the cleaning cycle can run longer because the base acts as a vacuum for the vacuum, emptying the robot so that it can go again without having to empty the robot. Having a large dog that sheds, our older non-Shark robot would struggle after one cycle. Not this robot. I have found that the base suction is strong enough to pull out a fist full of dog hair from the robot. And no longer do I need to empty the collection bin after every cleaning cycle. The Shark Matrix integrates perfectly with Google Home and I can start and stop the robot using Google Home commands. The best part since the robot is Wifi connected, I can start the cleaning cycle no matter where I am at in the world. The Lidar system on board really does a good job at avoiding objects and bumping things. However, the Lidar system adds approximately ½ inch to the height of the robot therefore it might not go under sofas very well. One of the cool things about the app is that after you map the layout of the space you want it to clean, you can give labels to certain rooms and tell the robot to only clean a certain room. In addition, you can take the robot and put it in the area you want specifically clean and interface it with the buttons on top of the robot. All in all, if you were to choose a robot, I honestly cannot recommend anything else than Shark than the other original robot. Its quieter, its faster, and has more features at a better price point.

The Powercurve24 is an interesting power strip that solves the most common problems with todays electronics…massive power supplies! One of the most frustrating things about electronics today is that realizing you can only plug 2 or 3 items in a power strip and blocking outlets next to it. Powercurve 24 solves this by allowing the outlets to rotate 360 degrees and is also generously spaced outlets allow those bulky power bricks to be plugged in and still use neighboring outlets. Also a lot of today’s devices really only need a lower powered USB port to charge such as headphones. No need to occupy an outlet to charge them because this thing comes with 4 USB power supplying ports. For being a bit larger than your normal power strip, they attractively designed the rounded edges and corners to not be an offending sight if you had it on a table. In addition, they included a right angle low profile connect to the wall allowing you to flush furniture as close to the wall as possible. And perhaps the most impressive thing is the fact that they stand behind their products. Looking at the warranty pamphlet that comes with the power supply, you see that they have a process to submit a claim if you suffered damage from using their power strip. That in itself is assuring and will help you sleep much better than using cheap power strips that have absolutely no warranty.

Productivity laptop in a great small form factor

The Asus ZenBook Q420 is a good modern thin laptop that can handle everyday tasks and more. The new Intel Evo i7 processor is powerful enough to do what you need to do. With 16 gigabytes of RAM, this laptop has no problem running 3D printing software such as Prusa Slicer and Lychee slicer, laser engraving software like Lightburn, music production software such as Studio One, and Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The screen is super bright and amazingly clear thanks to being an OLED screen. At first the computer suffered from a lag, but it was due to Windows 11 animation feature being on. Turn that off and the computer is snappy. It is too bad the laptop did not come with Windows 11 Pro, but instead you get Windows 11 Home. The built in video processing architecture Intel Iris XE appears to be good for everything except gaming. This laptop will not run Fortnite extremely well compared to a NVIDIA or Radeon graphics card, but this ZenBook is not a gaming rig, it’s a productivity laptop and it does its job well. The touchpad becomes a numpad with a touch of a button and is very cleverly designed and is pretty useful. The laptop has an IR camera built in so that you can utilize the Windows Hello face unlock feature which is extremely useful for unlocking your password manger such as Bitwarden or Lastpass. One complaint I had about previous ASUS computers was the usage of silver keypads which make seeing the keyboard next to impossible. Asus did away with that in this generation of ZenBook’s. So far battery life is great. The two things that prevents me from giving this laptop 5 stars is the placement of the USB-C ports. Both ports are on the right-hand side of the laptop meaning the charging cable is also on the right-hand side interfering with your right hand if you are using a mouse. Also having both USB-c charging ports on the right-hand side means you will have a wire sticking out on the right-hand side if your power plug is on the left side of the computer. I would of rather have a USB-C charging port on each side of the laptop allowing the user to pick which side to plug the charger into depending on the environment. Another thing is that with the price of this laptop, including a pen to take advantage of the touch screen would of made this the ultimate winner in mobile computing. This feels like a miss on Asus’s part and trying to find an ASUS Pen 2.0 is very difficult because its always out of stock and is an extra $100 purchase on top of the price of this laptop. All in all the ZenBook checks off a lot of boxes and will be a daily driver for me despite the 2 negative things about this laptop.
I would recommend this to a friend!
