Space saver without scrimping on features

I'm a bit of a keyboard snob. I have several go to brands and Corsair is one of my favorites. My most favorite is their K100. I use it for work and gaming daily. Corsair has had ten key less keyboards in the past but they are stepping up their game (pun intended) with the TKL 60 Pro.
I've been tinkering with several of the brands that have full customizable keyboards where you can change out the switches and key caps but those can get pretty cost prohibitive. For a small form factor racing simulator I have I needed a compact keyboard to set to the side of the seat sled. The TKL 60 Pro is exactly what I needed. The 60% size affords me a bit more space where I can also use a mouse to navigate the game menus.
The optical keys are a bit clicky but tactle feedback is excellent. Stroke travel is perfect for my liking and the response is extremely quick. I was hoping the switches could be swapped but from what I can tell the switches are fixed. But, if you don't like the keycaps there are other standard sets you can purchase if you wish to customize the K60. The weight of the keyboard and the rubber grips is on par with most gaming units and keeps it from sliding around your desktop while you are deep in game play.
The LEDs are fully customizable using Corsair iCue software. You can easily switch between standard effects or customize to your liking. I actually use a bit of software called SignalRGB for a complete system LED setup. Corsair is fully supported.
The only issue I have with 60% keyboards is you give up dedicated media keys but instead you can use function keys with fn key pressed to shortcut media control.
All in all it's a great keyboard from one of my favorite computer accessory/component manufacturers. 2 thumbs up Corsair. The OPX is a solid performer. I'm happy I added it to my keyboard stable.

What Apple and Samsung should have done
on September 15, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
Thanks Apple and Samsung!!! Of course I'm being sarcastic. First Apple decided that everyone has enough power adapters so they removed them from iPhone and iPad packaging. Of course they didn't cut the price of the devices.
Best Buy has a great solution if you still need a new charger. Best Buy's Insignia house brand has a great 20W USB-C Compact Wall Charger for iPhone or any device for that matter. I use it to charge my iPhone, Samsung Fold, iPad and Tab S7. I love the fold in plug blades makes it a nice compact device that easily can find a place in your backpack, briefcase or purse. Since the new iPhones come with a Lightning connector on one end and USB-C on the other this adapter if perfect.
I haven't timed charging because I usually just top off my devices at the end of the day but this unit seems to do more than adequate at getting the job done.
If charging from a laptop or PC isn't possible this is an affordable option at only $12.49. I'm tossing this into my travel bag for safe measure.
Grab one of these and you won't be sorry.

Numbers don't lie
on September 9, 2022

Linksys goes the plain and simple path with the Hydra Pro 6 AX5400. It has a very unassuming look but don't judge a book by it's cover. It was extremely easy to set up. The Linksys app (downloadable from Apple Store or Google Play) walks you through setup step by step. In just a few minutes I was connected to the internet.
Even though coverage is around 3000 square feet since this is a Mesh router you could benefit greatly by adding a couple of more Mesh nodes to get better coverage if you have a 2 story, a larger home or if the router is located at a far end of the house or building.
As with most routers you get 5 ethernet ports on the back, one is dedicated for connecting the router to a modem and the other 4 are available to hard wire devices. Flexibility!!!
I have Xfinity/Comcast cable with connection to the internet through their XFi modem/wireless router. I then connect by ethernet cable to the Linksys router in my home office where most of my devices are connected via wifi to that router. This gets me great coverage in my home and strongest signal where I need it.
As far as speed goes... Using my gaming laptop with WiFi 6 wireless adapter I went to speedtest.net using Microsoft Edge and ran it connected first to a Xfinity XiFi router/modem (not WiFi 6) and then again connected to the Linksys and then again connected to a Netgear (also not WiFi 6).
Router Download Upload
Linksys AX5400 714.26 Mbps 41.83. Mbps
Xfinity XiFi 596.64 Mbps 41.78 Mbps
Netgear XR1000 545.50 Mbps 41.86 Mbps
The results are pretty significant, especially since I'm a gamer and the faster speed benefits my game play.
The price tag just shy of $300 might be a bit much but but if you need an upgrade to take advantage of WiFi 6 (if your equipment supports it) then this is a great solution.

Read the specs
on August 19, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
Make sure you read the fine print in the specifications. You will not be able to use this as a stand alone printer connected to a computer by USB. It does not support Wi-Fi connectivity either. The printer must stay connected to the internet via an Ethernet cable even if you use a USB cable (so what's the point?) so if you purchase one of these as a personal printer for work and they won't allow you to connect non-company equipment to the network then you are out of luck.
Initial setup was not that friendly for me. For some reason the setup where the printer automatically connected to the internet and then launching HP Easy Setup it took me a couple of tries to finally get it to work. Not so easy for me.
When it comes down to it I don't have a spare port on the Ethernet switch in my home office so I have to play cable jockey between it and a color inkjet All in One. As it stands I am unable to use this printer in my current home office environment unless I drop some additional funds on a new switch with more ports or just add another Ethernet switch.
Once I did get it working the print quality was excellent and print speed was much better than my older laserprinter. I tried connecting HP Smart app on my iPhone to the printer and when it searched it couldn't find the printer. I had to enter in the IP address for the app to find the printer. I tried a test print and it didn't go so I still have some troubleshooting to do.
I will admit that this was a poor choice of printers for my situation and that's not HP's fault. Just another life lesson to read the fine print before you purchase anything.
If you have a home office or small work place where you can connect this printer to your network then it's a good solid choice at the price point. HP printers are always the tops in my book. If this is for a stand alone USB connected printer then keep looking. This ain't for you.
I'm on the fence on whether to recommend or not. It really depends on your setup. You be the judge after doing your homework.

That's more like it

I actually worked at Emerson while they were developing this thermostat but unfortunately left the company before they released it so now that it's had a decent amount of time on the market I was excited to finally get me hands on a unit.
I had been using a Nest for a number of years and I was pretty content with it but the dial navigation seemed a bit clumsy and I always got messages of the wifi dropping. With the current IoT devices it seems you are married to the manufacturer. The Nest was with parent company Alphabet and the Sensi is with Emerson. Pick your poison.
Installation was a breeze, just follow the enclosed directions. If you aren't familiar with AC control wiring I highly suggest taking a photo of your current controller's wiring as indicated in the instructions. They include wire labels if you need to flag any wiring that isn't color matching. I only had to use one of those labels as the wire colors matched what I had. Once your wiring is complete the instructions walk you through the system settings depending on if you have gas or electric furnace. Pairing with the smartphone app is really easy and final setup is a breeze.
I do love the straight forward navigation and display on the Sensi. It's really easy to adjust temp on the unit with simple up and down arrow keys... how much simplier can it be? It's really easy to set schedules for run times, easy to switch between heat and cooling (yeah, that Texas weather... if you don't like it wait a minute). I like the app controls as well. If you've set your Sensi higher while away from home you can remotely, through the app, create a schedule to turn down the temp before you get home or simply manually adjust the temp using up and down arrow keys. Easy peasy!
The display is a pleasing basic LCD black letters/numbers on a grey background and the back lighting is subtle and only on when you touch a button. The Sensi smartphone app is simple as well. Once paired with the Sensi you can easily adjust temp, fan control, heat/cool, scheduling and it even tells you how much the AC system has been on.
Emerson does have a touch screen version for even more convenience. But the simplicity of this unit even makes my wife happy and that goes a long way in my book.
Grab one of these if you want a connected AC controller that has lots of features but still very easy to use.

Cloud based picture frame? Why?
on July 21, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
There is a lot to like about the frame but there are a few major issues I have with it and it's a deal breaker for me.
Setup was pretty easy once I downloaded the app. It walks you through setting up an account and allowing you to load pictures from your smartphone to the cloud. Once an account is created the app will guide you through creating a photo playlist by selecting photos from your phone. You can share your playlist with others so they can look at them online but you can do that with other cloud platforms.
With a free account you get 10GB of cloud storage for your photos and not many perks. The basic account you only get up to 15 seconds of video and only 5 shared playlists. Warranty is only 1 year with customer support Monday through Friday.
You can sign up for the optional nixplay plus account for $50 per year (or $5/month) which gets you 50GB of cloud storage, up to 1 minute duration on videos, Print Shop discount, lifetime warranty on frames, in-app photo editing and 24/7 support.
The things to like...
*The stand attaches magnetically to the frame in either a portrait or landscape position.
*The HD picture quality is awesome.
*Convenience of creating playlists and uploading pictures Smartphone setup and picture loading. *You can also log into your account on a computer and create playlists and load pictures.
*Supports Google Photos
*It has a touch screen to allow for some setting adjustments like display type and transitions
*It does have sound
Things that are a deal breaker for me:
*You have to have a Nixplay cloud account.
*You must connect to the cloud to load pictures.
*Even though it supports Google Photos you are still limited to 5 playlists and 10GB
*Since it's cloud based service there is no removable memory, no card slot, no USB drive port.
*I really can't stand that you are limited to 10GB of cloud memory so I can see that you would have to purge and upload continuously.
This tries to be too much... cloud based with limited storage unless you pay a fee and a desktop picture frame. For the price there are other solutions that would allow you to load pictures with a SD card or USB drive.

You had me at Atmos
on July 9, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
I have probably a dozen headsets. A couple I run on my desktop gaming rig and a couple specifically for consoles. I've had a good experience with the RIG headset in the past so when the 800 Pro HX wireless became available I wanted to see if the Dolby Atmos was really that noticable of a difference. I was not disappointed.
First of all these are extremely comfortable. While most headsets have a sliding mechanism to adjust for head sizes the RIG goes for a odd snap in positioning system. There are 3 slots on each side of the band that the earpods snap into. It does feel a bit on the cheap side but once in place you really shouldn't have to make adjustments as the top elastic strap has comfortable padding and will snug up the fit on your head.
There is absolutely no metal in the band, relying on flexible plastic to take any flexing abuse very nicely. I would think the plastic does help with shaving some weight off the headset so the plastic feel really doesn't bother me. The earcups are very supple with a very soft foam ring covered with a hybrid skin creating a very comfortable fit and cutting out a lot of ambient noise. Overall it does a great job and shaves off some ounces doing it.
The left earcup has the pivoting mic arm that swings up to mute (one of my favorite headset features... keeps me from having to search for the mute button) and all of the controls. There is a dial specifically for XBox to switch between game and chat balance, the power/bluetooth pairing button, volume dial, mute button and a micro USB charging port (come on Nacon, get on board, it's 2022 how about USB charging port please!!!!). On the bottom of the right earcup the charging dock connector.
The charging dock has a micro USB connector for a supplied charging cable and a USB A port for the wireless dongle. You can use the cable with the dock or you can use it to charge the headset without the dock (if traveling this is really helpful but don't forget the wireless dongle). Speaking of the dongle it has a selector switch that allows you to switch between a XBox and PC. I would have preferred that the dongle be set up to allow the XBox and PC to automatically recognize it without have to switch. One note, you have to remove the dongle from the USB port on the dock to switch it between XBox and PC. You can not access the switch with the dongle in place. Again, if it was done automatically this would not be a problem.
Sound is on par with several of my higher end headsets especially when you download the Dolby Atmos app. It opens up your virtual world to a more immersive experience. Just playing the demos in the app proved to get that WOW response from me. When playing a few of my favorite FPS games I can tune the headset for better highs so I can hear approaching footsteps and clearer in game ambient sounds. I can also tune it for better bass response for music.
For the price point it's a pretty solid buy. There are a few headsets that come close or might be slightly better sounding but you pay for it with added weight. So, for a sub $150 headset it's hard to go wrong with the RIG-800 Pro HX Wireless.

A bit getting use to but when I do...
on July 6, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
I've always been a bit on the fence for Roccat gear. I always thought it to be inferior to some of the other major gaming peripherial manufacturers but of late I've added their Vulcan RGB gaming keyboard and now the Kona XP as my main gear equipment. The Kona XP is replacing my Kona AIMO mouse which still functions perfectly well but the XP has a bit more bling with the full RGB treatment. It seems that ever since Turtle Beach bought Roccat things have gotten much better.
I like the ergonomics. It fits really nicely in my palm. All of the buttons are in easy reach but I do have an issue with the button on the center of the top. By default it's the profile button which will allow you to easily switch between different setups but the location is odd for me. I'd much rather see it on the bottom of the mouse since I wouldn't usually switch profiles on the fly but I do adjust DPI as I play games. I'm used to the top switch being a DPI toggle but rather than on top by the scroll wheel like most gaming mice the DPI up and down buttons are forward on the side in close proximity to the left mouse button. I find this extremely difficult to get used to. During one of my Tom Clancy Division 2 gaming sessions I accidentally hit the profile button which pushed it to some unknown configuration that not only stopped responding to the game but also Windows completely. I have movement but none of the buttons worked. I had to CONTROL/ALT/DELETE and use arrow keys to exit the gam and eventually had to unplug the mouse and plug it back in for it to work as expected. Of course I was anxious to try the mouse without downloading the driver (the instructions show a massive number of button combos without drivers by utilizing a function button on the most bottom skirt of the left side grip. With the combination of using that "function button" you get the equivalent of 29 buttons. Impressive but I've got muscle memory to contend with. Once the Swarm software is installed you can set your profiles, you can set macros or you can turn off the annoying profile button... LOL... which I did.
Speaking of DPI the mouse features a 19K optical sensor and is nVidia Reflex compatible which reduces latency and boosts responsiveness. Quicker response is always good. Can't blame the mouse anymore!!!
The switches a quick and very responsive and have a nice tactile click to them. The scoll wheel also has a side to side function so I may end up programming that to strafe left and right or switch shoulder aiming from left to right and back... or even adjusting cover stance. Also with Swarm you can adjust the crazy RGB lighting. Unfortunately I use SignalRGB to control all the RGB lighting on my rig and that softward doesn't play nice with Swarm RGB control. I have had to go into SignalRGB and turn off the mouse and keyboard so there is no lighting control conflict.
This is a wired mouse but the cable is cloth braided and very flexible. There is no resistance or drag caused by the cable. The mouse slides very smoothly on my mousepad due to the heat treated glides (which they throw and extra set in the box in case you wear out the set that comes on the mouse).
I think the mouse is a solid buy especially at the sub $90 price point. It's got great ergonomics and great response adding the the user's very positive experience. Now if I can just get use to the function button and not having the DPI switch where I like it.

Sennheiser goodness
on June 27, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
At first glance these the True Sport Wireless are fairly beefy for a sports focused earbud although they seem less heavy than they look. The big pluses for me are the great sound that Sennheiser is known for and the price point is not bad for Sennheiser quality.
Included in the package are 2 sets of 3 silicone ear adapters (1 set being open for the “AWARE” or ambient noise and the other for “FOCUS” or ambient noise reduction). Also included are sets of silicone fins that allow you to get the proper fit to hold the buds in place in the ear even during workouts. It does strike me a bit funny that they don’t have active noise cancelling but that may have driven the price point up. Several competing brands have active noise canceling a little more than these cost. Also included is the charging case with wrist lanyard and a charging cable. Noticeably missing is a charging adapter but you can charge through a computer, laptop or another device’s brick.
Battery life is around 9 hours of play time which should be a good day’s worth of activity. The rechargeable carrying case comes with USB A to USB C charging cable which should bring total of 25 plus hours of play between charges. Charge time is about 90 minutes but you can get about an hour of play time with a 10 minute quick charge.
These are dust and splash resistant but not waterproof. They should be great for workouts, running and cycling but stay away from water sports.
Bluetooth connectivity is a breeze and I got these paired to multiple devices without a problem.
Download the smartphone app that allows for controlling equalizer and any custom settings. Unfortunately you need an account to be able to save custom settings. I don’t know about you but I really don’t want an account for every peripheral (earbud, headphones, speakers, mice, keyboards, etc… ) but that seems to be the new norm.
If you are looking for a good pair of Sennheiser earbuds it’s hard to go wrong with these. I usually cycle for exercise so I might get by with using these in the “AWARE” setup otherwise I’d be content in just using these as my daily use earbuds.

Ultralight gaming mouse
on June 17, 2022
Posted by: Technopackrat
I've been a long time Razer fanboy going all the way back to the original Boomslang ball mouse (somewhere in a box in storage and probably still works). I loved that mouse so much that I bought the optical version once Razer (the company) resurrected from ashes.
Onto the new ultralight version of the Viper. I'm not an eSports guy so I might not appreciate all the features and honestly I like some weight on my mouse. I used to purchase mice with custom weights and always adding the max weights but recently I've been getting some of the lightweight wired mice.
It does have a great grip, fitting my hand nicely with buttons easily in reach. I do like the optional die cut grip material they provide on a sheet that you can peel and stick to add texture. I really like this feature because it does feel like it gives me a better grip on such a light device.
It does have a 30K optical sensor which makes it extremely fast but I personally will gear that down while I play the FPS games I usually play. One thing missing for me is the DPI on the fly buttons on top by the scroll wheel. Instead they put the button on the bottom... REALLY??? THE BOTTOM??? I play some FPS games that I like switching to a slower response so I don't overshoot my aimpoint. Putting the DPI switch on the bottom does not let me switch on the fly.
It is rechargable and comes with a very flexible braided USB C cord for both direct plug in or you can use the USB adapter with the cable as a remote mount for the 2.4Hz dongle. I have yet drained the battery so the charges last a good while. The good part is if you do drain the battery you just plug in the USB A to USB C cable to the mouse and you can use it as a regular wired mouse while it's charging. I'm surprised that Razer didn't provide a dock for this mouse like the Viper Ultimate. There is no place to stow the USB transceiver if you toss the mouse in a laptop bag... easy to lose! Just ask how many transceivers I've had to purchase off eBay.
My biggest fuss is about Razer Synapse software. I've mentioned in a few other Razer reviews that I really don't like Synapse. I had install issues with the software however the latest version installs much better than the previous versions that hosed my Windows install. I also don't like the fact that when I boot I always get a notification to install Synapse as the system recognizes the Viper. I have yet to find a way to opt out of installing Synapse. Don't get me wrong, Synapse has some nice features and allows you to customize the buttons on the Viper but I mostly use the default Windows mouse settings so it's just annoying at this point.
I also have a problem with the current price point. At $150 there are other options available, even in the Razer line, that might be a better choice.
If you are already in the Razer ecosystem or wanting to move to it the Viper V2 Pro would be a nice addition to your gear. If you like some of the ultralight wired version mice then the Viper might be a good add for you as well.

Using a separate line eliminates flavor contamination and delivers clean water. 2 temperature settings, hot and boil, allow you to make tea, hot cocoa, instant soups, and oatmeal. Brew a super-rich coffee concentrate that you can use to create delicious lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and other coffeehouse-style drinks. Use the built-in, fold-away frother to transform hot or cold milk/milk-alternatives into silky-smooth froth in seconds. Top your Specialty brew with frothed milk for a coffeehouse-style drink. The frother is also removable for easy cleaning. Choose from one of four different brew styles; classic or rich for a traditional hot cup of coffee, over ice for an iced coffee that's never diluted, or specialty to make a cappuccino or latte. Clean function, dishwasher-safe parts, removable Ninja pod adaptor and frother allow you to easily deep clean your unit.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen4 SSD for next-level computing. 980 PRO delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 3.0.¹ ¹The NVM Express® design mark is a registered trademark of NVM Express, Inc.* Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.PS5 compatible with heatsink as recommended by Sony; heatsink sold separately.

I was thinking about using this with an enclosure on a ps5/Xbox SX. Could that decrease speed, and downgrade graphics as compared to internal ssd? Thanks

I would suggest using a 2.5" Samsung SSD rather than a M.2. Enclosures are plentiful and might be better priced. I've got an external 2.5 SSD on my PS4 and it works flawlessly.

Logitech's website shows a graphite color keyboard. Are there multiple versions / does BB offer graphite version? See https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-keys-wireless-keyboard.

The keys are black but the base appears to be graphite. There is a definite but slight contrast between the base and the keys.
