Simple to use and options of brew
on October 30, 2023

Coffee is a food group in our house. We can’t start the day without a fresh brew. Sometimes it may be a multi-mug day and other days it’s a quick out the door travel mug full. This coffee pot allows for both not to mention adding in some different flavors, like how about a mug of Texas Pecan and wife wants a mocha? Easy peasy with this pot.
I love the dual capability pots and this one does not disappoint.
The brewer comes with a, pretty much standard, 12 cup glass carafe, a drop in ground coffee basket with filter, a drop in K cup basket and a reusable ground coffee K cup filter if you don’t like contributing to land fills or need to recycle those tiny K cups when spent.
Using the standard ground coffee brewing you can chose between 6, 10 or 12 cup brew sizes when more than a few cups are needed. The heating plate keeps carafe hot for up to 3 hours and automatically cuts off when times up.
If you need a quick mug to-go then drop in the K-cup basket, your K-cup of choice or reusable K-cup filter and you are ready to brew a single mug at either 8, 10 or 12 oz with a touch of a button.
So quick and easy to use. There is no clock or timer so no setting the pot to start while you are in the shower. But at the $70 price point it’s hard to argue with the simple and easy to use brew machine.

Quick Ultra-Light Gaming Mouse
on October 30, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
I love Corsair so I came into this with high expectations. My main gaming PC has the H100i AIO cooler, Dominator DDR5 memory, K70 keyboard, a M65 mouse and a SCUF PC controller. Most of my builds have used Corsair cases but I’ve strayed recently although Corsair continuously pushes new and interesting designs and I always consider them first when a new build is started.
I/O seems to have a very wide range of products with a wide range of feel. Manufacturers are jumping on the band wagon of custom keyboards with the ability to change the switches depending on your desire of feel, from soft and spongy to firm click. There are a ton of options.
Mice jump into that realm with ultra light to heavy to mice with weights that can be added or removed to get the feel you prefer. While I tend to prefer a heavier mouse I’ve tried a few light weight mice but usually return to my M65. When the M75 Air Wireless Ultra Light Weight came available I wanted to give it a go. My go to game is Tom Clancy Division 2 and while playing the mouse was quick, a little too light weight to my liking but it’s extremely capable of game play. The PTFE feet are super slick and slide very easily on a desk or mouse/desk pad. Very quick!!!
iCUE software to update firmware and adjust settings like button assignments, DPI settings, and sensitivity. Buttons use optical switches with quick response but maybe a bit too clicky for me. It’s very responsive with up to 26,000 DPI. The scroll wheel has a smooth roll with a tad amount of tactile feedback.
It is wireless with ability to connect via the included USB cable, Bluetooth or 2.4GHz with the included transceiver. A pet peeve of mine is some mice don’t have a storage spot for the transceiver and I’m happy to see that Corsair included a spot on the undercarriage, out of the way and you don’t have to remove any panels to access it. With a full charge you should get up to 34 hours of use. Your mileage my vary. I found the drive time absolutely acceptable.
In the box you get the mouse, the 2.4GHz transceiver and the USB charging/data cable. All you need to do is download the iCUE software if you don’t have it installed already. No fret if you don’t want to install iCUE because Windows will recognize it as a standard mouse.
I think the M75 Ultra-light will be my new travel mouse for work and play. Into my backpack it goes for a perfect dual purpose mouse.

Better than the best?
on October 20, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
I’ll admit it… I’m not really a controller player… except for something like Madden or flight and racing sims where mouse and keyboard controls don’t hack it.
For those cases I’ve been using another brand’s console controller and have been pretty pleased with it but along comes the SCUF Envision Pro with a better feel and more customization. Leave it to Corsair to bring innovation to gaming. Whether it be their keyboards, mice, headphones or other computer peripherals Corsair has really stepped up their game and tying everything neatly in the iCUE software. One ecosystem allows for less apps and less resources on your system.
There is nothing I hate or dislike about the Envision Pro. Everything it does checks off boxes of what I need. The pro has a comfortable textured grip and it appears to weigh a little bit less than the other guy’s Elite which is probably the closest thing to the Envision Pro. I say close but is it really??? See more below…
The iCUE software allows for customization of all your Corsair components and adding the SCUF to the mix is a true blessing. It sports the standard controller buttons but with extras!
• Typical ABXY buttons
• Typical D pad
• Typical 2 joysticks w/buttons
o iCUE lets you adjust your dead zones
• Typical 4 front edge triggers
o 2 of these have a selector to chose between quick or slow response
• I’ve seen nothing else with 2 side buttons that the Envision Pro has
• The 4 grip buttons are only available on Brand X’s Elite
• Only on the SCUF do you find 5 programmable buttons on the back edge.
o You can program these for just about anything, including macros
o They are in easy access with your thumbs
• RGB lighting can be sync’d with your other Corsair devices
Another nice touch is the side switches and 2 of the grip switches can be deactivated with replaceable covers. Snap off the switch/grip buttons and snap on the covers for a hardware defeat rather than removing action in the iCUE. Replacing the trigger with covers will keep you from accidentally activating something you don’t want.
If you prefer not to have iCUE running you can create and load your controller mapping so you can exit iCUE and still have your desired control.
You can use the SCUF either as wireless (with included dongle) or USB (using included cable w/USB-C adapter).
After using the Envision Pro for a week I can honestly say it's now my favorite PC controller and I'm going to have to rethink my choices when it comes to my consoles.
I highly recommend the SCUF Envision Pro

Great high quality budget gaming keyboard
on October 17, 2023

An affordable wired alternative to the higher cost gaming keyboards. It does not come with a palm rest but there are some options available elsewhere. Some of the K70 variants do include palm rests so make sure you select the right variant if you prefer them.
Corsair uses red linear key switches which are some of my favorites with good positive tactile feedback. To keep the cost down Corsair unfortunately soldered the key switches to the board so there is no replacement of switches if you prefer some other type… if that is what you are looking for there are a good number of fully customizable keyboards available but make sure you take your wallet because they will set you back some big bucks. That’s not what this keyboard is about. It is about a high-quality budget gaming keyboard with the basic bones of some of their higher priced devices.
The frame is solid, so you don’t get any bounce when typing. The key stabilizers on the larger keys (shifts, space bar, etc) provide even plunge with each press. No uneven rocking of those keys. Key caps are replaceable, and there are many sources for custom keycap sets if you choose to modify. With some of the other Corsair higher end keyboards they include a set of WASD key caps either textured or a different color since those seem to be the most gaming-centric keys used but sadly those key caps are not provided, not a deal breaker but would have been nice. I do like the full-sized keyboard with numeric keypad. Some other offerings go TKL (ten keyless) to reduce desktop space, but I use my keyboards daily for more than gaming, so the numeric keypad is a huge welcome. I prefer a dedicated volume knob of some sort and the Integrated media control knob does not disappoint.
Setup was extremely easy. Before plugging in the keyboard download the iCUE software. When you start it up it will automatically recognize your keyboard and let you know if any firmware is available to update the device. RGB lighting is flexible with several modes of lighting. Corsair provides custom lighting murals that provide different effects, or you can create your own. If you have other Corsair iCUE compatible devices, it will recognize them as well and you configure the RGB to be coordinated providing the same type of lighting experience. In my personal gaming rig, I have Corsair DDR5 RGB memory, the Corsair H100i All in One CPU Cooler with Corsair RGB radiator and case fans along with the very cool OLED pump screen that you can program. I also have a Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro mouse and the new Corsair SCUF gaming controller. All of these devices are coordinated using the iCUE software and it provides an amazing amount of customization. I’ll be jumping into the SCUF in another review. Very cool.
At the end of the day Corsair has provided a solid performing keyboard that can be used for gaming, work and general computer tasks.

What the phone guys should have included
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
So a few years ago Apple decided there was enough e-waste so they stopped including chargers with their phones. If you previously had a phone you were okay because you could just reuse it for the new phone. Fast forward a couple of years and most if not all of the phone manufacturers stop including chargers as well.
The issue came when new cables supplied with the phones switched from USB-A to USB-C for the charger end (or both ends). If you had an older charger the newer cables wouldn't work.
The Insignia 30W compact charger is just what you need to fix that problem. It's actually a touch smaller the iPhone chargers and 30W of output power is more than enough to quickly charge your phone not to mention tablets and even a MacBook Air. The folding pronges make it an easy "toss in your bag/backpack" charger that can handle multiple devices (just not all at once).
Although I haven't seen any stats on the charge times since it really does vary depending on the device you are charging but it's fast enough to get you some air time or screen time when you are in a bind... like sitting in the airport between connections and needing a quick charge.
It's simple to use, small enough and does a really good job of what it was made for. Thumbs up on this one!!!

The Detect Pro robot vacuum is powered by 3 deep-cleaning technologies that enable the robot to maximize performance by sensing mess level, floor type, and edges & corners. DirtDetect sees even the hidden debris and automatically increases suction and cleaning passes to remove the mess on carpets and hardfloors. Now with NeverStuck technology, this robot will navigate around obstacles AND lift itself up and over thresholds and onto thick carpets. Not only can the robot deep clean, but you also do not have to worry about it getting stuck. Detect Pro finishes the cleaning mission every time and with each clean will empty itself into its bagless base that contains a HEPA Anti-Allergen Seal trapping dust & allergens inside. The odor neutralizer technology will also ensure the odor is trapped in the base for a fresher smelling home and making it the ultimate end to end solution for pet hair pick up.

Taking the work out of chores
on October 12, 2023

We’ve had a robot vacuum before but it wasn’t self-emptying. That wasn’t a big deal if you remembered to empty the vacuum when it was done. Plus the onboard hamper wasn’t big enough to tackle my floor with two dogs that shed like crazy.
We were excited to see how a self-emptying vacuum would perform. Our house has wall to wall ceramic tile flooring with both short pile throw rugs and one shag type rug. I was concerned how the vacuum would do with the shag. Well… it did very well.
Setup went smoothly. Make sure you download the Shark smartphone app, connect your phone to the vacuum and the home wifi and start the explore function as it runs through the house mapping each room. When done you can edit the map, in the app, from one big inclusive map to individual room which comes in handy. You can instruct the robot to vacuum the whole house or select individual rooms. Comes in real handy if you just need to touch up a room.
In the app you can setup a normal vacuum schedule so the rooms stay clean with no effort other than emptying the base hamper from time to time.
One tip… before you start, and depending on the frequency that you normally vacuum, be sure you give your rugs a good traditional vacuum. We had not done that and our 98 pound Labrador had shed what may have been a small pup worth of dog hair. The hair clogged quickly and took longer to complete the first run and actually needed to park to recharge before it would start again. I took care of the throw rugs and now the Shark runs the course like a pro and when done the base sucks the contents out of the vacuum into the easy to dump base hamper.
At first my dog was extremely concerned about this object roaming the house but she quickly got use to it. Sometimes it’s amazing how that thing can work itself into tight spots but it always finds a way to get out.
We are extremely pleased with the Shark Detect Robot

Good on the go solution
on September 12, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
A sweet spot solution when you need a keyboard and mouse on the go.
I don't see this as something to use instead of a laptop or desktop keyboard although the form factor of the mouse is ideal for tossing in a backpack. The compact nature of the keyboard however would make me lean more towards using a standard laptop or desktop keyboard. If using for a desktop it there are probably better solutions out there... including many from Logitech. However if you only want to invests in a single keyboard/mouse combo then you could do much much worse than this economy offering by Logitech.
What I would use this keyboard for is a great solution for tablets and smartphones. I hate screen typing on those devices, especially smartphones. With the ability to pair to 3 different devices it's perfect for my use because I have an iPhone for my personal phone, an Android phone for work and an Android tablet. 3 devices and I can use the same keyboard and mouse!
The combo does come with a 2.4mHz transmitter/receiver to connect to a USB-A port on your laptop or desktop. I haven't checked to see if that still counts towards your 3 device connectivity. The little adapter resides in the mouse next to the battery. A quick pop of the mouse cover and everything is neatly stowed away.
Once you pair with up to 3 devices it's really easy to switch between them with the quick select keys (F1, F2, F3). I did have issues with pairing and finally found by accident the method to reset the keyboard so it would take pairing mode. To reset the keyboard press Esc and letter O, and then Esc and letter O, and then Esc and letter B. Info may be in the manual but who looks at a manual when you have Youtube videos :)
The Logi Options+ software has some slick macros pre-loaded and you can create your own on the fly. By programming a "trigger" Options will load applications, like go to your email, start up Youtube or your favorite music app, or at work you may have a trigger open up Outlook and Teams and a spreadsheet. Pretty slick and have usually been done with macro software however Options+ makes it really easy to do so.
The keyboard takes 2 AAA batteries while the M350s has a single AA battery... hmmm... why not the same? I know AA is pretty standard for wireless mice and the keyboard uses AAAs to keep the thickness down. It would have been more convenient to have them the same size battery so you don't need to lug around different size batteries.
This actually might be a great solution for college or high school students that are space limited but need a solid performing input combo. It's small enough to toss in a backpack for on the go folks, especially if you are using a tablet. Some of the tablet keyboards can be pretty pricey so this combo would be a great fit.
All in all the perfomance is good, the size is great for on the go and the Logi Options+ app adds a lot of convenience for PC (and assuming the Mac). I don't see Options+ for Android so maybe Logitech can make that happen.

One of the best OTC hearing aids, but...
on August 25, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
I have several Sennheiser headphones and earbuds and I’ve always loved the quality, comfort and richness of sound so I was intrigued how Sennheiser would approach the new over the counter hearing aid market since Sonova acquired them. Sonova is a leading provider of hearing care products and with the All-Day OTC hearing aids you can definitely see and hear the influence.
These are the most comfortable hearing aids I’ve worn, including the pricey prescribed set I have owned for a couple of years. They fit more like earbuds with full sized tips that fit snuggly in the ear canal and they don’t tickle my ears like my prescription set. It comes with medium sized tips installed but included are smaller and larger tips so you can fit to your ear.
Setup was a breeze. Install your flavor of the All-Day Clear app from Google Play or Apple Store and start the pairing process. Once paired you set up your profile. They use a canned conversation to listen to and you adjust volume, tone and clarity as needed for your hearing situation. I have more hearing loss in my left ear and the app allows you to fine tune by splitting the volume controls for each ear. Even more importantly, something missing from most over the counter hearing aids, is the ability to listen to music and have audio for phone calls. That is a huge plus over other units.
As with all hearing aids the noise coming in from the built in mics is a bit tinny but you get used to it very quickly. Sound coming in via Bluetooth is crystal clear and full bodied, meaning that it’s not much different than listening via earbuds. I expected no less from Sennheiser.
Using the phone app you can make adjustments on the fly. In my office environment we have high levels of conversation at times so it’s great that the app allows you to dial in the volume you need so you can reduce the amount of ambient noise. I usually have to dial it down a lot at times to reduce the distractions nearby.
The things I wish were different…
It would have been a good feature to have and option for a longer stem. I wear glasses and with the size of my ear the body rides a bit higher and contacts the stems of my glasses. I bit of extra length would allow the body to ride a bit lower behind the ear and not come in contact with the stems of my glasses.
I know the push is that these hearing aids have a 16 hour battery life but they miss the boat that the charging case does not have a battery. Case must be plugged in for it to charge the earpieces so you can’t charge the hearing aids if you are on the go. At the price point and the sheer size of the charging case they should have included a reserve battery for charging on the go. I would have opted for that rather than the padded carrying case, nice touch but unnecessary. Give me a battery in the charging case please!!!

A worthy challenger to other premium earbuds
on July 17, 2023
Posted by: Technopackrat
Poly (by HP), formerly Plantronics, has added another product to the fray of the multitude of Bluetooth earbuds. The Voyager Free 60 is priced competitively with other earbuds and offers reduced outside noise both on receiving and sending sides. Featuring active noise cancelling and to cut out ambient noise along with the 3 microphones on each earbud and some creative noise blocking they provide a significant amount of wind noise reduction resulting in clear conversations during calls.
They are great to listen to music and offer gesture controls and buttons for convenience of controlling your tunes.
Battery life is good. I haven’t timed the length of use since I don’t wear buds all day and always return them to their case when not in use but having a wireless charging solution is handy and a 15 minute charge gets you an hour of listening time, which is extremely useful. I will have my phone on the the wireless charging pad when not in use and when grabbing the phone I’ll set the earbud case on the charger to keep it topped off.
There is a companion app helps fine tune the earbuds. The app has a multitude of setting which include a very limited equalizer (more for assisting call clarity), receiving or muting notifications, setting ringtone volume, setting noise cancelling, max volume settings, voice prompts and tones and also allow you to reset the buds if you need to go back to out of the box settings.
I prefer earbuds without the stem because I can usually get a better fit in my ears but the Voyager has a comfortable fit due in part to the small, medium and large ear gels provided. I do love that the gels snap in place rather than rely on stretching the gel over a stem. However, I wouldn’t recommend for wear during workouts or sports because, at least for me, they would tend to fall out since they don’t extend too far into the ear canal. But for casual use and for the great noise reduction these are more than adequate making them a worthy contender to other brands.

Compact School/Business Powerhouse

The stealth look is amazing but for me it comes at a minor cost of usefulness. Function keys are touch sensitive area above the number keys. The keys are defaulted to multimedia, backlighting, screen brightness, display swapping, home/end/insert/delete keys, but with a press of the fn key the backlit area switches to the standard F1 to F12 keys… really slick execution of the multifunction keys. The backlighting makes it easy to touch in the correct place. However I can’t say the same for the trackpad. While the stealth look is amazing I don’t particularly care for it because the trackpad is not obvious and even worse is finding the left and right buttons. I’ve had to “hunt” for the buttons to press them correctly. Fortunately, there is a slight tactile feedback when you do land on and press the buttons. I think a ghosted outline of the trackpad and buttons would have been extremely helpful or even a self-applied film decal.
Continuing with the keyboard. The keys are square/rectangular and not full travel. There is minimal gap between keys. Aesthetics are primary but there is enough travel and a bit of tactile feedback to make for a good typing experience. I had no issues getting used to the keyboard and I use gaming keyboards with my desktop computer. The typing experience is night and day but still a positive, especially since Dell has gone super thin with this unit. The white keyboard backlighting is excellent with off, mid and high settings. You don’t need the bright setting when working late at night… you know who you are 😊.
Performance is amazing with the intel 13th generation i7-1360P CPU and 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory it is more than powerful enough for work applications. Add the 1GB SSD storage drive you have plenty of room for your apps and files. The SSD makes boot ups really snappy. I got about 20 seconds from power on to Windows login screen.
Where this unit really shines (besides the under-hood stuff) is the display. The 13.4” OLED display is powered by intel’s Iris Xe graphics adapter and has up to a 3456 x 2160 resolution. While the Iris adapter isn’t a powerhouse and not capable of running a lot of AAA games it can be used for games that don’t require nVidia or Radeon hardware. Of course the primary target for this laptop is the business user and it’s more than capable of handling anything you can throw at it. Especially useful for business trips or long plane flights where you may want to play movies or music.
The webcam has a good image and it’s hidden amazingly in the extra thin top bezel. At first I didn’t even think there was a webcam but sticking with a stealthy look they managed to hide it pretty well. This unit has an integrated mic on the top edge of the bezel. You don’t even notice it’s there. This XPS13 is very light and thin and can easily fit in the smallest of backpacks or messenger bags… or even a large ladies handbag.
Connectivity is great, especially with the Killer Wi-Fi adapter and of course it has Bluetooth.

It does fall a little short on inputs and output ports. There are only 2 Thunderbolt-4 ports and one would be used for charging if you are short on power. There are no USB-A ports nor is there a headphone/mic jack. Instead Dell includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter and a headphone/mic dongle. If you don’t use Bluetooth accessories then you may want to invest in an USB-C hub that also has a USB-C input/output for charging, a couple of USB-A ports and even a HDMI port. There are a couple of options available to purchase separately including one offered by Insignia.
In addition to the USB adapter and dongle a power adapter is included that is small and easy to toss into a bag. The brick has a detachable power cable and the USB-C connector will take up one of the two available laptop Thunderbolt ports.
I have an older generation XPS13 and all in all this is a great update for a really good platform.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Coffeehouse Versatility meets Pod Convenience with the Ninja DualBrew Pro Specialty Coffee System. Included 12-cup, double-walled thermal carafe is perfect for both hot and over-ice beverages, with an ergonomic handle and spout allow for easy control of pouring. Tackle grounds and pods with 9 grounds brew sizes from small cup to full carafe, and 4 pod brew sizes from 6 to 12 ounces. Brews a coffee pod faster than a leading Keurig coffee maker upon startup. With Thermal Flavor Extraction DUO technology, perfect flavor for grounds and pods is delivered with even saturation and precise temperature control for ultra-flavorful coffee. Separate from the coffee system is a dedicated hot water line. Using a separate line eliminates flavor contamination and delivers clean water. 2 temperature settings, hot and boil, allow you to make tea, hot cocoa, instant soups, and oatmeal. Brew a super-rich coffee concentrate that you can use to create delicious lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, and other coffeehouse-style drinks. Use the built-in, fold-away frother to transform hot or cold milk/milk-alternatives into silky-smooth froth in seconds. Top your Specialty brew with frothed milk for a coffeehouse-style drink. The frother is also removable for easy cleaning. Choose from one of four different brew styles; classic or rich for a traditional hot cup of coffee, over ice for an iced coffee that's never diluted, or specialty to make a cappuccino or latte. Clean function, dishwasher-safe parts, removable Ninja pod adaptor and frother allow you to easily deep clean your unit.

Can you tell me more about the thermal carafe? Is the inside stainless steel?

The future of gaming has arrived with the WD_BLACK™ SN850 NVMe™ SSD. Long load times are obsolete with PCIe® Gen4 technology, reaching up to 7,000MB/s read speed and up to 4,100MB/s write speed. Spend more time playing and less time deleting, storing your latest and favorite games with 500GB capacity (not intended for NAS or server environments). This WD_Black internal SSD has a compact form factor and a PCIe Gen4 interface for compatibility with select PCs or laptops.

what form factor is this m.2? My motherboard (x570 Unify) supports 2242/2260/2280 storage devices.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen4 SSD for next-level computing. 980 PRO delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 3.0.¹ ¹The NVM Express® design mark is a registered trademark of NVM Express, Inc.* Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.PS5 compatible with heatsink as recommended by Sony; heatsink sold separately.

I was thinking about using this with an enclosure on a ps5/Xbox SX. Could that decrease speed, and downgrade graphics as compared to internal ssd? Thanks

I would suggest using a 2.5" Samsung SSD rather than a M.2. Enclosures are plentiful and might be better priced. I've got an external 2.5 SSD on my PS4 and it works flawlessly.

Logitech's website shows a graphite color keyboard. Are there multiple versions / does BB offer graphite version? See https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-keys-wireless-keyboard.

The keys are black but the base appears to be graphite. There is a definite but slight contrast between the base and the keys.
