Great Training Watch
on February 28, 2018

I've been using a competing brand GPS sports watch for about a year and heard great things about the Suunto so I thought I would give the Spartan Trainer Wrist HR a try.
Out of the box setup was pretty easy. As instructed I installed SuuntoLink on my PC and MovesCount on my smartphone. SuuntoLink lets you sync your GPS info and saved routes onto your watch. It also allows easy firmware updates to the watch.
The button learning curve is a little steep. It didn't seem intuitive for my liking. Also the backlighting level can be set but of course you'd want to keep it as dim as possible to save battery life so a tilt and raise sensing for backlighting would have been a great addition to keep you from having to use a second hand to push the backlight button.
While the GPS waypoint system includes a compass like face to lead you through your points a true compass would have been a great addition. While I did see what appeared to be a compass on some of the website images I'm assuming that those were more in relation to the GPS mode.
A recent back injury has prevented me from giving the watch a thorough test of the primary reason for the watch which is to track time, performance and recovery during workouts. My biggest draw however is the heart rate monitor. With recent surgery I've been told by the doctor that a sign of internal leakage was a racing heart beat so it's very important for me to monitor my heart beat so I set the watch to give me a daily HR which is a 12 hour window in graph mode. I do wish there was a way to set a notification if your heart rate exceeded a set value.
Another feature I really don't care for is after an activity it will ask you how you feel. I suppose if you are working out daily it would give you a snapshot of level of exertion with your self-evaluation on how you feel after the workout. I suppose it would help you gauge the level of exertion of your next workout.
I did however use it linked via Bluetooth to my Android phone and was able to receive notifications via the watch. The notifications were fairly easy to read and gave me a vibration to let me know that a notification happened I still dislike having to press the back-light button to be able to read the message.
Other than a few things that are more personal preference I think this is a real winner.

Great gaming keyboard

I picked the K70 RGB up as a replacement for a Logitech G910 keyboard. I like the way the keys are not sunk into the case but rather are above which makes it easier to clean. I especially like the media keys and volume control. The Corsair software allows you to custom control the lighting to either only illuminate the typically WASD keys used for gaming or a variety of effects. I really have become a fan of Corsair products and this keyboard does not disappoint.

Answer Skype audio calls hands-free with this voice-activated harman/kardon Invoke speaker. It's made with premium materials to project music powerfully without sacrificing sound quality from a 360-degree metal cabinet. This harman/kardon Invoke speaker includes Microsoft virtual assistant Cortana to answer questions and smart home technology to streamline tasks.

Great sound but...

Yet another home assistant solution. I'm really torn about the Harmon/Kardon Invoke using Microsoft's Cortana technology. This late comer to the game has a lot to overcome due to the limited connected applications but this is only because of Cortana. For music you only have the choice of Groove Music, iHeartRadio or Spotify. No Pandora, no iTunes, and no Amazon. Now I fully expected that Amazon Music would not be connected due to competing devices but no iTunes or Pandora? When I tell Cortana I want music it tells me it's a better DJ when using Spotify Premium. Hmmm... maybe I don't want to pay for another music streaming service. There is a work around, sorta, which I will cover later.
Cortana does connect to Nest, Wink, Hue and Samsung Connect home devices but I had issues with taking control of my Nest even though they were connected. And Cortana does connect to Outlook and Skype so you can check your calendar and make hands free calls.
Okay, most of what I have covered is more of a negative review aimed at Cortana and not the Invoke. I'll attempt to focus on the Invoke but since I use Google Calendar and Amazon Music I'm struggling with finding the usefulness.
Setup was easy. You must download the Cortana app for either Windows 10 PC, Android or iPhone. The app walks you very clearly through the steps and you have your Invoke connected in no time.
The Invoke is attractive. The charcoal color and solid metal materials give it a very appealing look. The biggest advantage of the Invoke is the sound quality. It beats the others hands down. Much richer and enjoyable and like the others it provides sound 360° around the speaker. So here is the work around for using unsupported music sites... since the sound quality is great you can also take advantage of it as a Bluetooth speaker. This kinda takes the convenience of hands free services away but you can use Siri or Bixby or Google on your iPhone or Android to play almost hands free music. You still need to push the activation button on your phone to the voice recognition to work but it will work.
If sound quality is your deciding factor in a home assistant device then the Invoke is the way to go. I'm sure the services and capabilities will continue to grow. If you need a home assistant device that has more connectivity out of the box then you might want to check out the alternatives.
I'd recommend the Invoke with the above mentioned qualifiers.

Solid AMD performer
on December 11, 2017

The HP Envy X360 is a capable performer for work and entertainment. The AMD Ryzen 5 mobile CPU cranks at 2.0gHz with a 3.6gHz turbo mode for decent performance specs. The integrated GPU is the Radeon Vega Mobile which is great for on the road entertainment and should do well with light duty gaming. The 15.6” IPS touchscreen and the Bang & Olufsen speakers are a great combo for entertainment duty. The speakers are much better than those in gaming laptops costing much more.
The case is aluminum or similar alloy type material and the styling is attractive, very professional looking. No flexing while using or converting to tablet mode. Very solid!
I do see a little backlight bleeding around the edge of the bevel. Very tolerable but somewhat noticeable.
The Bang & Olufsen software controls include an equalize and bass and treble boost sliders.
The keyboard has a solid feel. Very responsive. It includes a full numeric keypad, multimedia controls, airplane mode, backlight, and screen brightness keys. The keyboard does have backlighting however it would have been nice to have one intermediate brightness setting. The trackpad is huge with no visible buttons and is smooth to the touch and sports two finger gesture recognition
On the right side
- power jack
- volume control that is very tabletisque and intuitive (love this feature)
- full size SD card slot
- USB 3.1 (type C) and USB 3.0 ports
On the left side
- USB 3.0
- full sized HDMI port
- headphone jack
The laptop I got has 8gb of memory and a 1TB 7200RPM HDD (neither is user upgradeable but other configurations of memory and hard drive are available including SSD options}.
I do question however how such a large and heavy (almost 5 lbs) laptop could be useful in tablet mode. Sure the 15.6” touchscreen is nice, but the weight almost eliminates the desire to use it in tablet mode.
One thing that did bug me was an odd tick noise in sleep mode coming from left side of laptop, near power switch. Not sure what it is but sounds very much like an old wall clock ticking.
The AMD processor helps bring the cost down to the sub-$700 range making it a great value for all the features. I would have given 4 1/2 stars with only 1/2 a star off for the ticking noise and backwash on the screen backlighting. I would have liked to have memory and SSD user upgrade-able. Everything else makes it a great buy.

Great wireless video monitoring solution!
on November 13, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
from Katy, TX
I've been looking for a complete wireless solution for home video monitoring. There are wi-fi cameras but most require a power supply which can make it difficult to place where desired. Where I wanted to place cameras it was either very difficult to impossible to route cables. The Arlo Pro 2 is a completely wireless solution having Wi-Fi connectivity and rechargable batteries. Because it's completely wireless you can place in almost any location to get optimal viewing to the area you want to monitor. One caveat, if you go completely wireless then you'll need access to the camera so you can take it down and recharge it with the included charger.
The Arlo Pro 2 camera is chocked full of features: 1080p which allows for crisp images, nightvision , sound and motion detection, 2 way audio, IP65 certification for outdoor applications, rechargeable batteries, multiple optional mounting methods (using standard threaded camera mount).
The cameras are connected via Wi-Fi to the Arlo base unit which acts as a dedicated hub. The base unit connects to the internet via a wired ethernet connection. The base also will accept a USB drive for optional local backup. Another great feature of the base is the siren. You can arm the siren to trigger when there is movement or you can trigger remoteley via the Arlo smartphone app (for iPhone and Android). Heck, I even discovered the camera is even compatible with Amazon Alexa although I haven't linked mine yet!
For indoor use the camera has a flat rubber base so it can sit almost anywhere, tabletop, shelf, fireplace mantle, counter, etc. For outdoor use the Arlo Pro 2 comes with a quick-mount orb that fastens to a flat surface with a single screw. The camera attaches to the orb with a magnet that's embedded in the camera. While the orb mounts are okay for most applications I did find that the maximum range of positioning was somewhat limiting. Netgear does offer a fully adjustable articulated mount that will provide greater aiming flexibility but it requires that you screw the camera onto the mount.
Setup was easy using the online guide. You do have to create an Arlo cloud account. To get the most out of the system download the smartphone app. The online guide steps you through the process and within minutes your cameras are connected. While viewing and recording is 24/7 you do have the option of scheduling alerts. With the basic free account you can connect up to 5 cameras and video is stored for up to 7 days. You have the option to upgrade your account to accept more cameras and have more days of cloud storage but for most the basic free account will be enough.
All in all this is a very flexible and easy to use system. I'm still tinkering with setting so I don't get as many activity notifications on my phone. With dogs in the backyard I am getting a lot of alerts but I'm sure with a tweak of camera aiming and some scheduling adjustments I can reduce those significantly.
In the box:
Arlo base unit with siren
2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras
2 rechargable batteries
ethernet cable
2 wall mount orbs with hardware
charger with battery cradle and cable

Pros:
Everything!
Cons:
should have included articulated mounting arm

Sony's answer to the Apple Airpods but better
on October 30, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat

There is a lot to like about these Bluetooth/NFC enabled earbuds. First and foremost they are individual noise-canceling buds with no wires at all. In the package are several different rubber ear pieces to customize the fit of the buds to your ears. The charging base also doubles as a convenient carrier. Also included is a micro USB cable to charge your earbuds but not included is any type of charger so you must plug into your own charger or USB port on a laptop or desktop.
Instructions are graphic and are okay. I'd prefer to see a little more in depth explanation of the functions but there is enough there to get you going.
To get the most out of these you must use the Sony Headphones Connect App for Android or Apple smartphones. The app allows you to set the ambient sound control based on your environment. You can chose from noise cancelling, ambient sound - voice mode, or ambient sound - normal mode. You can also toggle these modes by pressing the button on the bottom of the left earpiece.
There is a microphone on the left earpiece and you can answer or cancel calls by pressing the button on the bottom of the right earpiece. The button on the right earpiece also serves as a play/pause and next song by a single press. Double press and you get next song, triple press is rewind/previous song. There is no volume control on the earpieces.
I found the sound quality extremely good. Noise canceling works extremely well with each of the three modes. I use them in the office and I can usually hear someone when they start talking to me but the buds cancel a lot of the other ambient noises.
I found the volume for these are somewhat limited. I had to push volume to MAX on the smartphone to get an exceptable volume level. Even using the app didn't provide any additional volume however it did provide simple equalizer settings.
All in all they do a great job for what they are. I would have liked to see volume control on the earpiece. Occasionally the right earpiece would drop out but that may be from operator error.

Mehhhhh!
on October 10, 2017

I'm still trying to figure out what this is supposed to be. Outward appearances have the device being a whimsical representation of the much beloved superhero Spiderman. The only "moving" part on the figure are the LCD eyes that change shape to mimic expressions. This Spiderman seems to be geared to the pre-teen. I can't see anyone older giving this much time.
You must download the companion app to be able to actually use Spidey. The app will allow you to select interactive modes, set volume. Personalization is limited, you can select from two lists to create your character name which Spidey will address you as. You can also select two parts to create his super power. It does have a few amusing games that you can activate via the app but I found they get old quickly. Spidey tells corny jokes and stories and will enlist your help to fight villians.
What it isn't... an interactive assistant in the vein of Google Home or Amazon Echo. It can't play music, it can't tell you the weather, it can't do Google searches or provide the seemingly unlimited information that a home assistant can.
What it is... a limited interactive toy. The limitation comes from not being connected to the internet and only can interact with what is programmed in memory. There is also limited customization using the app. I'm unsure if app updates will add features or stories or jokes.
It does have a couple of somewhat useful features. The first being a motion detector of sorts. You can put Spidey "On Guard" and if anything moves in the area Spidey will alert you. The second feature is being able to use Spidey as an alarm clock but again you must use the app.
The most annoying thing for me is that you have to push the spider on Spidey's chest for him to listen to commands or responses. So no just setting him on the desk or shelf. He has to be in hand.
In closing I'm a bit confused of the purpose of this device. The price of just under $150 puts me at a quandry of its actual usefulness. Is it cute, yeah. Does it do some cool stuff, yeah but only with the app. Is it worth $150, mehhhhh! I think your money would be better spent on an interactive home assistant however if you are a die-hard Spidey fan then maybe so, that's what attracted me to this guy.

Not just for movies
on September 29, 2017

On occasion I have organized yearly planning meeting lock-ins with Boy Scouts. We'll show up on a Friday evening, order pizzas, run through the next year's program planning and then break out ice cream, gaming consoles, board games, guitars, you name it, whatever the kids like to share. So the evening typically starts off with planning slide presentations from a laptop and then, when business is done, they shift to video console games and eventually in the wee hours of the morning and the pizza coma starts we'll fire up a movie and the kids will grab some popcorn and chill, eventually drift off for a quick nap before sunrise.
I needed a projector that could handle just about anything I throw at it. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 760HD is a 720p high definition projector supporting both 4:3 and 16:9 picture formats making it suitable for a great all purpose tool. With 3300 lumen output with a 15000:1 dynamic contrast the picture was bright and crisp. We watched Rogue One with the picture at least 120" diagonal and the 720p picture was crystal clear with high definition. Epson claims up to 300" with 720p resolution but due to space limitations I was unable to verify.
There are 3 different video input ports: Composite, VGA and HDMI so you should be able to connect just about anything, even older consoles. It will even support streaming devices like the nVidia Shield TV, Apple TV, Chromecast.
It has the typical adjustment features like front height adjustment, focus, zoom, slider keystone adustment and sliding lense cover (black out). But it does have Quick Corner which allows you to adjust each corner of the image separately to fine tune the image.
A few features on my wish list but would probably bump the price point: Bluetooth (especially for audio) and direct casting from tablets or smartphones.

Pros:
+Decent price point for feature set
+Bright image
+Easy to use
+Multiple input formats
+Built in speaker (with caveat, see cons)
+Size and weight are acceptable (not bulky and heavy)
Cons:
-Does not come with a carrying bag or case. An optional soft case is available from Epson but I'd go with a third party hard case with internal foam padding, like Pelican.
-Video cables are not provided with the projector so be prepared.
-While the speaker does an okay job it will not fill a room and not give you that immersive sound that are desired for action movies or video games. It would greatly benefit from either an audio jack to plug in external speakers or Bluetooth.

Warming up!
on September 25, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
from Katy, TX
Let me start off saying that I'm a huge Bose fan! Maybe obsessed is more like it. I've got several Bose products ranging from a home theater soundbar to noice cancelling earbuds.
At first I didn't care too much for the Soundwear speakers. The horse collar style takes a while to get used to and looks a bit ackward. Actually on first sight they reminded me of the short lived and long gone (and this is aging me) Bone Fones. My initial judgement was they were too heavy, too bulky and too loud to use at work as a headphone replacement. While at home I felt like the speaker placement did not result in the best quality sound until I held the speakers up a bit closer to my ears. However, using them for a few hours at work I am warming up to them quickly. I can turn the volume down on my connected device so that it's just bearly audible from a few feet away but I still experience the rich Bose sound eminating from them. In the past I'd use earbuds or headphones and people would have to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention. With the Soundwear not covering the ears it's much more conducive to my work environment.
Bluetooth pairing was extremely easy. Just put the Soundwear into Bluetooth discover mode and then scan for bluetooth devices on your smartphone or tablet. Don't forget to download the Bose Connect app for your iOS or Android device. The app allows you to make some adjustments like Bass, setting phone call alerts, and auto off timer to name the more important adjustments.
Is the Soundwear a headphone replacement? That depends. They obviously don't do noise canceling but if that isn't a concern then yes, these are a great headphone replacement.
Is the Soundwear a workout headphone/earbud replacement? That depends. If you doing stationary exercise like a cycle trainer or eliptical then yes. If you are running, weight training, yoga or any other exercise that requires a lot of upper torso movement then no, earbuds would be your best bet.
All in all the Soundwear speakers fit a great niche where you want to enjoy music or podcasts or audio books without having to wear earphones or earbuds. Since they don't cover or plug the ears they allow communication with others around you without having to unplug.
The more I use the Soundwear the more I love them. I'm still debating whether these are another grand slam homerun by Bose or a single homerun. Time will tell for me anyway.
Pros:
great Bose sound
don't cover ears
Bluetooth
changeable covers (optional purchase)
Cons:
a bit bulky in comparison to headphones or earbuds
horse collar design takes some getting use to
price point, but Bose is never cheap

Lots to Like!

My wife told me we didn't need a new vacuum but I frequent car shows so I'm always on the lookout for a battery powered vacuum to do those last minute touch-ups on my car. So I jumped on the new Shark IONFlex DuoClean when I saw it recently on an infomercial. While not usually relying on infomercials to make purchase decisions the features on this vacuum did appear to be perfect for quick room clean-ups and a portable enough cordless with enough power to take care auto carpet and upholstery when I hit the car shows.

Assembly was easy. Just snap the power unit to the articulated exension wand and then snap the power brush head unit onto the other end of the wand and slap in the battery pack and you are ready to go. The wand is lightweight aluminum so the unit won't be too heavy when you are cleaning drapes, shelves or even ceiling fans. The vacuum also comes with 4 attachments that slip either on the power unit or on the extension wand and a battery charger.
The articulated wand helps with getting under furniture or those hard to reach places without having to push stuff around. It also helps with storage of the vacuum when you are done with it. Just press the wand joint lock and it folds down to almost half its full height.
While glancing through the instructions I didn't see clearly how to open the dust bin. Unfortunately for me it popped open and a bin full of dirt and dog hair ended up on the floor. Maybe instructions could be more clear on how to open the bin and I would test open the bin before you vacuum to prevent a spill. Everything else was pretty straight forward making this an easy to use vacuum almost right out of the box.
I would highly recommend purchasing the optional battery charging cradle and extra battery pack to help ease the frustration of a battery dieing before you are done cleaning.
Pros:
+Cordless
+Bagless
+Lightweight
+Removable battery pack
+Decent battery life
+Articulated wand
+Powered brush head
+Fairly compact storage
Cons:
-Somewhat clumsy dust bin emptying (for me anyway... just the first time though)
-Sure wish the second battery with cradle was standard
-Price is a touch on the high side

The future of gaming has arrived with the WD_BLACK™ SN850 NVMe™ SSD. Long load times are obsolete with PCIe® Gen4 technology, reaching up to 7,000MB/s read speed and up to 4,100MB/s write speed. Spend more time playing and less time deleting, storing your latest and favorite games with 500GB capacity (not intended for NAS or server environments). This WD_Black internal SSD has a compact form factor and a PCIe Gen4 interface for compatibility with select PCs or laptops.

what form factor is this m.2? My motherboard (x570 Unify) supports 2242/2260/2280 storage devices.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen4 SSD for next-level computing. 980 PRO delivers 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe 3.0, while maintaining compatibility with PCIe 3.0.¹ ¹The NVM Express® design mark is a registered trademark of NVM Express, Inc.* Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.PS5 compatible with heatsink as recommended by Sony; heatsink sold separately.

I was thinking about using this with an enclosure on a ps5/Xbox SX. Could that decrease speed, and downgrade graphics as compared to internal ssd? Thanks

I would suggest using a 2.5" Samsung SSD rather than a M.2. Enclosures are plentiful and might be better priced. I've got an external 2.5 SSD on my PS4 and it works flawlessly.

Logitech's website shows a graphite color keyboard. Are there multiple versions / does BB offer graphite version? See https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-keys-wireless-keyboard.

The keys are black but the base appears to be graphite. There is a definite but slight contrast between the base and the keys.
