Almost Perfect - with a few misses

When AMD released their Ryzen platform CPUs I was hoping that a mobile solution would be available soon for the budget minded consumer. In comes HP with the ENVY x360 with Ryzen 5 and Vega graphics.
First impressions were very positive. The 13.3" 2 in 1 form factor with touchscreen is perfect for the road warrior, not too big and heavy nor so small that the touchscreen is difficult to use and has active Windows Ink capability. Resolution could be better but 1920 x 1080 is good enough considering the 13.3" screen.
The Ryzen 5 mobile CPU and 8GB of memory is snappy enought for most needs. The Ryzen Vega graphics built into the CPU handles daily use applications with ease and is suitable for casual gaming.
Roughly 12" x 8 1/2" x 1/2" and weighing in at less than 3 lbs (less power supply, which is fairly small and lightweight unlike gaming laptops which require a heavy brick power supply) the size is perfect for throwing into a daypack, sling bag or briefcase. The metal case is attractive
Sound is more than decent using Bang & Olufsen audio technology pushing out 4 speakers. Crisp and clear but for serious sound you may want to pair it with a good bluetooth speaker set.
There are 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 3.1 type C port and a micro SD slot. Other basic stuff... wifi, bluetooth, NFC and built in Webcam and microphone are included.
A few things I don't like about this laptop:
1. Why does HP insist on putting a 128GB SSD in a Windows laptop. Okay, I get it, for those wanting something a bit more functional than a tablet the x360 13 makes a decent enough alternative however, by the time you load Microsoft Office on top of Windows 10 half the hard drive is used leaving about half the hard drive for any other applications (games) and data. Sync your One Drive, Google Drive or Dropbox and it eats into that space quickly. I would have loved to see this unit come with at least a 240GB SSD which should be adequate. I have yet pulled the bottom off the laptop but I'm hoping that HP at least made the memory and SSD easily accessable so I can upgrade them myself.
2. SD slot is micro and not a full size SD card. If you have a camera that uses SD cards you'll need a dongle to be able to read on this laptop.
3. There is no dedicated graphics output, not even a mini-HDMI port. So, for the road warrior that needs to project you will need another dongle to convert USB to HDMI or VGA (depending on how old the projector is). Yeah, sure you can flip the screen around into an inverted V and display to the screen but at 13" that will limit audience those sitting around a table... maybe.
4. Price!!!! For an AMD system it seems price point should be reduced somewhat, especially with a 120GB SSD.

My previous TV was a 2015 Vizio 4K HDTV. While the previous TV was adequate it did suffer from artifacts in solid black and dark scenes so I was looking for something better.
Wanting a better viewing experience I got the Vizio P-Series 55" 4K HDR Smart TV as an upgrade. This unit is loaded with features making Vizio and even better value for the money some of which are:

The appearance is stunning with clean bezel-less design however I do wish the stand was adjustable rather than the 4 fixed legs. The wide stance of the fixed supports legs prevents the use on narrower stands or tables. Also an adjustable height would be nice.
Picture quality is crisp with no noticable ghosting or artifacts in dark or black areas. The built in speakers are more than adequate to fill the room but a soundbar or surround sound system really brings the viewing experience to another level, especially with action shows.
Setup was extremely easy, basically plug and play. It comes with an infra-red remote but there is also an iOS and Android app for added control convenience, including casting streamed shows, pictures or music from tablets or phones.
Vizio has long been known for adding value to their displays and TVs and the P-Series does not disappoint.

These speakers are a great addition to the Sony HTZ9F sound bar with wireless subwoofer. The sound quality is awesome, really filling the room.
Setup was easy. Plug in the power and access the HTZ9F on screen setup. These speakers connected automatically and with the on screen setup of the sound bar you can fine tune the output depending on distance away from the listener. Due to the placement of my right rear speaker I was able to throttle the output down so it wasn’t overpowering the other speakers that were farther away.
Running the speakers through a few sound demos, including the one on the DVD provided the sound is pretty immersive. I did find the rear speakers acting more like front speakers in some of the surround sound demos however I did fire up a recorded concert from my DVR and the sound was pretty awesome. The vertical surround feature fills the room and is available with a simple click on the remote.
I do think the price point for the soundbar and these optional speakers is a tad on the high side and for the price the rear speakers should have been included with the soundbar.

ASUS ROG-STAR!!!

I've been a huge ASUS fan for a long time. I especially love their Republic of Gamers line of products. I've owned several ASUS laptops and have been using a huge 17" monster for my portable gaming rig for a few years. The only problem with their laptops has been they looked like gaming laptops and may not be appropriate for business use since they lack a "professional" look. Times have changed with the new GU501GM. Tons of power for gaming but looks sleek and very suitable for business use with it's sexy brushed black aluminum case. It's a bit on the heavy side for a "thin" laptop. Height is .7 inches and it weighs about 5 1/2 pounds but what would you expect for a powerhouse.
The chassis is solid giving the laptop a firm feel with no flex except for very minimal flex with the screen. I don't know how they packed a ton of power in that sleek thin case. The i7-8750H mobile processor is crazy fast with it's 6 cores and turbo boost when you need it. Packed with 16GB of DDR4 memory (expandable to 32GB) and the discrete mobile nVidia GTX 1060 graphics with 6GB of memory should be more that adequate for most games, especially in a laptop.
I also love the backlit keyboard which is one of the better keyboards I've felt on any laptop. They have a great tactile feel and do not feel spongy like some laptop keyboards.
For fast booting and performance it comes with a 128GB M.2 SATA boot drive and a 1TB hard drive for data. Also I'm happy to see Bluetooth becoming standard on laptops. This ROG star also has a bunch of ports... there are 4 USB 3.0 ports, 1 HDMI port and 1 Thunderbolt port and of course one headphone/mic jack (combined nto separate). Also a huge improvement over my 17" ASUS are the speakers. These actually sound great for a laptop however I usually pair a Bluetooth speaker or use a USB headset when I game but for business presentation in a small to medium sized conference room these should be more than adequate.
A few things that it is missing... there is no optical drive but those are going the way of floppy drives as you don't even see them in desktops any longer. There are a couple of disappointments... no MicroSD slot, no touchscreen and I would have liked to have seen at least one USB Type C port. I would have liked to have seen this laptop with a minimum of a 240GB SSD since I'll be using this for dual purpose (business and gaming). Also I can do without the boot screen sound effects. I'm sure there is a BIOS setting to disable.
I'm completely impressed by this ROG offering and it has booted my old MSI Ghost Pro laptop from my mobile stable. I can see years and years of great use ahead of me with this unit. Get it... for the price point you won't find anything that is better.

Great sound but pricey

I live in a 40 year old house with a vaulted ceiling so routing speaker wires is a challenge. It’s my old surround system has unsightly wires running along the baseboard and always get sucked up by the vacuum cleaner. I discovered the Sony HTZ9F soundbar with wireless subwoofer and optional wireless rear speakers as an option to my current system.
Setup was easy. Plug in the power. Hook up the input. If your TV has a ARC HDMI things get simpler but for my setup I had the HDMI output of the sound bar to a TV HDMI input so I could see the on screen menu from the speakers and I used the optical output from the TV to the sound bar for sound. The wireless subwoofer and two rear speakers do require a wall outlet to power them but the sound bar easily recognized all of the speakers and walked me through an on screen setup to set distance from the listener depending on placement of the rear speaker. Due to the placement of my right rear speaker I was able to throttle the output down so it wasn’t overpowering the other speakers that were farther away.

Other great features include built in Chromecast, LAN, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity so you and play music from any device connected to your network.
I did experience one annoyance however but it was fairly easy to fix once I ran through the on screen menus. I don’t need or want the soundbar active for everything I watch. I had difficulty finding the right setting to make the soundbar only come on when I wanted it rather than the default of powering on with the TV. Once I found the setting the soundbar behaves as I desire. Simply turn the option off where you can control both devices with the remote. That setting will allow you to turn off and on the soundbar when you want it and the volume of the TV and the soundbar are separate.
I do think the price point on this unit is a tad on the high side especially with the rear speakers being optional. I think for the price the rear speakers should have been included.

Look past the gimmicks

I'm going to review both the Sony SRS-XB21 and SRS-XB41 since I picked them up together and it will make sense when you read the review.
At first glance the new Sony SRS-XB series speakers are just another set of Bluetooth enabled speakers but there is more to them when you dig a little deeper. Not only are they Bluetooth capable but you can also can connect via NFC or by AUX input.
Best used with it's companion apps: For the both units download the Sony Music Center app which allows you to select playlists, change sound modes or even change lighting effects.
Controls are conveniently located on the top of the units with all ports and a couple of extra buttons located behind a rubber panel on the rear. They are both waterproof, washable and dustproof so they can even be immersed in water (as long as you have the cover over the back access panel). Being waterproof makes it a great choice for outdoor use such as camping, hiking, the beach or at the park.
The sound is impressive. I especially like extra bass on my speakers and these don't disappoint. Both sport Live Sound wich has angled speakers which provide 3D like sound.
One of the really cool features is you can string up to 100 SRS-XB series speakers together wirelessly to create a "Wireless Party Chain". There are a couple of other features that would are more aimed at the younger generation so this old guy can take them or leave them. The lighting feature is interesting and can create a party atmosphere especially if multiple units are linked in the Wireless Party Chain. Both units also support a "Party Booster" mode which, once enabled, will allow you to make different sounds such as a scratch, snare, kick drum or a cowbell... because we all know you need more cowbell.
The XB41 goes one step further with the help of the Fiestable app for your smartphone. Using the app you can control the lighting and add DJ effects.
Behind the rear access panel are the AUX input, DC charging port via micro-USB and in the case of the SRS-XB41 there is a separate DC charging jack. There are a couple of buttons to be able to connect multiple speakers and turn on the lighting effects.
Battery life is impressive at up to 24 hours with lighting off so you can enjoy a full day of use between charges.
In closing both speakers have a lot to offer outside of the party gimmicks. Sound is amazing so that alone makes it worth the look and add the ability to link more speakers for a party or even just a backyard barbeque makes it stand above other bluetooth speakers. Pick up either or both and there is even an intermediate model the SRS-XB31 which I haven't tried but all three can work together in any combination. A huge plus!

Great solution for the road warrior

At times I provide leadership training and need a reliable projector that is easily transported. I remember a decade or two ago projectors being the size of suitcases and weighed a ton. Technology has come a long way and there are many decent solutions that are relatively smaller and light weight. I have owned a couple of Epson projectors in the past. I’ve always been impressed with the features, quality and price.
The core features of this projector are perfect for business use but and be equally suitable for entertainment purposes. Whether it’s a Powerpoint presentation or a wide format movie or game console output the Pro EX7260 is a great solution with one caveat. The speaker output is fairly weak and you should use external speakers if you are using the projector for entertainment purposes.
The EX7260 weighs in at 5 ½ lbs and is just under 12” x 10” x 3 ½” so its very luggable. It comes with a decent soft case but I opt for an extra purchase of a Pelican type waterproof, padded hard case.
Image specs are:
• Native aspect ratio format is 16:10 but is also capable of 4:3 and 16:9
• Native resolution is 1280 x 800 but can resize to other resolutions
• Projected image distance is from 33” to 320”
• 3600 lumen brightness
• 15000:1 contrast ratio
• Projection can be from the front, rear or ceiling mount.

The biggest feature that drew me to this model is the wireless LAN input for tablets or smartphones. You simply download the Epson iProjection app from the appropriate app store. Setup is pretty simple. Once wireless LAN has been selected on the projector it will display a QR code on the projected surface. Start the iProjection app and select the QR Code Connection box in the app and then scan the QR code. Once connected there are a few selections on how you are going to use your paired device. You can select videos, pictures, PDFs, etc or you can share your screen which is perfect for doing Powerpoint or streaming videos. I’ve gotten into the habit of saving my Powerpoint presentations into PDF so they are more universally compatible and work equally well from a phone or tablet.
There are higher resolution projectors available but for a solid business solution with capability for movies and gaming it will be hard to beat this for the price. Throw in the added bonus of wireless connectivity that will allow presentations from untethered tablets or smartphones you have a winner.

Comfortable and great sounding

The newest noise canceling earbuds from Jlab Audio are lightweight, comfortable and easy to use. Bluetooth pairing was easy as any device. I had them connected to my smartphone in no time and I also connected them to my bluetooth enabled hi-fideltiy MP3 player. The sound from both devices was great and noise canceling is a huge bonus, cutting out most if not all ambient noise around me.
They come with a charging cable, different size earpieces for a custom fit and a carrying case. There also is a rubber sleeve to help give the cable between the earpieces giving the cable a solid feeling while not sliding around on the back of your neck.
My only complaint is that the carrying case is barely big enough for the earbuds with the rubber sleeve. I would have loved to see the case slightly larger to make packing them up a quicker task. As they are it does take some time to get everything into the small case.

Great home network security solution

I've used most of the antivirus solutions over the years and have been fairly pleased with all of them. This is my first venture into using a combination of hardware and software to keep my home network secure and devices protected.
The big selling point for me was the $99/year protection for unlimited devices whether it be computer, tablet or smartphone. The first year is free with the purchase of the Box.
Setup was interesting to say the least. You must use a smartphone or tablet app to setup the Box. If you follow the directions to a letter it goes much easier but of course I missed a step or two and had to start over from the beginning. In my defense, while the instructions were clear, the option I chose to setup had instructions reading from right to left instead of left to right so I did a few steps out os sequence. After discovering my error I started over and followed directions step by step properly. I had my own multiband wi-fi router so I didn't want to use the Box's router function but if you have a basic router then I would use the Box as a replacement. My setup required my router to be set in AP or bridged mode. Once that was done the devices were automatically.
A couple of warnings... the IP addresses for all devices will change so if you have a static IP you need to take extra care. You need to make note of the new IP address for the router so you can access the router setup in the future. Also if you have any downstream Ethernet switches or hubs you should unplug them for about 10 seconds or longer and plug them back in so they can get new IP addresses assigned otherwise you may not have access downstream of the router.
Adding devices is very simple from either the Bitdefender Central app on your smartphone or tablet or through Bitdefender dashboard on your PC. The dashboard will also allow you to scan each device or computer remotely.
Day one of using the Bitdefender Box and all is going well. If you have a household with more than just a few devices I'd highly recommend getting Bitdefender's unlimited device subscription. The Box gives you extra security against viruses and malware making it an excellent option for your home network protection.

I was thinking about using this with an enclosure on a ps5/Xbox SX. Could that decrease speed, and downgrade graphics as compared to internal ssd? Thanks
I would suggest using a 2.5" Samsung SSD rather than a M.2. Enclosures are plentiful and might be better priced. I've got an external 2.5 SSD on my PS4 and it works flawlessly.

Logitech's website shows a graphite color keyboard. Are there multiple versions / does BB offer graphite version? See https://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/mx-keys-wireless-keyboard.
The keys are black but the base appears to be graphite. There is a definite but slight contrast between the base and the keys.
