Worthy full-featured security camera system
on March 25, 2019
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The Defender 2K wireless camera system is a full-featured self-contained camera system that offers more options than most people will ever use.
My first disappointment was with this being called wireless, especially since there are truly wireless camera systems available.
My second disappointment was with the instructions. The single page instruction sheet provided minimal setup instructions with a note to go to the support website for the full manual which was not immediately visible. A system with software as complex as the Defender should come with a printed reference manual not just a quick install sheet.
After getting all the pieces unpacked, plugged in and connected to my television, the initial setup for the system and two cameras took about 20 minutes using the included mouse and on-screen keyboard to fill out the personal info, login info, password, security pattern and 3 security questions.
The system recognized both cameras. As indicated, it took a couple of minutes after each was plugged in. The cameras have a power plug and an Ethernet cable should you wish to hard wire them, otherwise this cord just dangles.
The image from the camera is clear and the 127-degree viewing angle is more than sufficient to cover a driveway or front door and yard. Night vision is impressive and crisp.
The software interface isn’t pretty but it is effective. The options offered are vast including scheduling, motion detection zone creation, pre-roll recording, event backups and offloading to USB thumb drives, camera image adjustments, emails directly from the system and the ability to control a PTZ camera if so desired to name a few.
The mobile app allows you to complete most everything you con do directly on the NVR including viewing videos, both recorded and live and system setup.
Pros:
Quality construction and build
Camera and image quality
NVR features and customization
In-device storage, no external monitoring services required (unit will however connect to and alert alarm monitoring services)
Cons:
Not truly wireless, cameras require external power making some installations difficult.
Short power cords and currently no extensions for this model available
Inability to operate base unit over Wi-Fi, it must be hard wire connected to your internet router
Lack of an included instruction manual and difficulty immediately finding it online
Overall, this is a more than capable camera setup with an extensive feature set. I hope to get many years of use from it and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a more professional security camera system.

Best wired headphones I've had
on January 22, 2019
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
Box
The V-MODA BassFit’s come in a nicely designed 6-sided box and you have to cut the string seal to open it.
Build
The BassFits are very light and the cord is supposed to be tangle-free. So far, it's not tangled for me. I would have liked an extra inch or so in it's length. There is also a clip to tighten the cord if needed. Also, the buds are magnetized to connect to each other and stay around your neck. This works well unless you have a really big neck.
Connectivity
I had no trouble connecting the headphones to both my iPhone and my Android. These will connect to two devices at the same time but you can only listen to one device at a time. The signal was strong and i didn't have trouble with the Bluetooth dropping out in the several high interference areas i travel through and they stayed connected across multiple rooms in my house.
Fitment
The BassFit’s come with three ways to fit, ear hooks, in-ear wings and just the tips. Experiment with whatever is most comfortable for you. After trying several different tips (there are two sets of four sizes, yes, you get extras, the headphones are most comfortable with just the tips. I found the hooks wouldn’t let them stay in as tight as I like and i'm just not a fan of the wings.
Sound
As the name implies, these have great sounding bass and mid-tones. I found that highs sometimes got lost in all the bass. The sound stage is one of the widest I've heard in ear buds. I assume this is due to the aptX codec. Depending on your device, you can choose which codec you use. The volume range is excellent. These are not noise-canceling headphones but with the proper fit, outside noises are kept at bay. There is a microphone in the control pod which i'm told sounds decent on the other end of the line.
Battery Life
The BassFit is rated to have an 11 hour battery life with a quick charge of 15 minutes providing up to 2.5 hours of use. Ive been using them pretty solid for a couple of days and still have over 30% charge remaining and am optimistic you will get 11+ hours of use from a single charge.
Controls
There is a 3-button controller on the right side of the headphones. I have a big neck so when the cord is wrapped behind my head, the control is in a awkward position. I was however comfortable finding the buttons i was looking for. There is a two-button combination to access Siri or Hey Google and both worked equally as well. The arrow buttons only handle volume and the center button does the rest of the work, play, pause, answering and dropping calls and jumping forward or back.
Rather than spoken words for power on, off, Bluetooth connect and low battery, the BassFits play a little jingle. I prefer words but the jingles are cute.
The field of wired bluetooth earbud headphones is pretty great and these are some pretty great headphones. At this price point however, I would have liked to have noise cancelling, although i will admit, there isn't much noise to cancel with these. I also would have liked an app to provide some equalization to adjust the highs just a smidge.
I would recommend these to a friend, especially if/when they go on sale for $99 or less.

Epson WorkForce ES-60W Wireless Portable Sheet-fed Document Scanner for PC and Mac
There are two versions of this scanner package. The ES-60 unit is the same for both. One comes with home and billing software, the other doesn't.
When i opened the scanner, i was impressed with how small the unit is. It needed charged before the first use.
You need to navigate to the Epson website and download the driver and scanner software, there are no disks included.
Setup asks how you want to connect the scanner, usb or wi-fi. In either case, usb connectivity is installed. The wi-fi setup was straight forward and connected on the first try.
There’s an app for that! Yep, download the Epson connect app from your favorite app store and run through the setup and you can scan right to your android or iPhone. I had no trouble connecting the scanner to my phone and was able to upload the scanned documents right to my google drive.
Scans are fast and the quality is decent. The software allows you to save them as either a .pdf or .jpg.
A couple of other settings in the software to be mindful of. The first is autofeed. If you have multiple pages to scan, make sure this setting is on, this way you simply insert the pages, one after the other to scan them. It makes it much easier. The 2nd is deskew. Its difficult to get each page perfectly lined up against the scanner roller so pretty much every scan i had, especially with larger paper, was a bit skewed.
Don't even think of using this for photos unless you purchase the additional feeder page, which wraps around the photos so they feed through. The instructions say it doesn't scan photos and they correct. I tried with various pictures and not one of them fed properly. I did not have any trouble with glossy magazine pages though.
I really like the Epson ES-60W scanner, it is perfect for people who have a need to scan documents while on the go. Epson rates the battery for 300 scans depending on the settings. I didn’t have 300 documents to scan but the battery got through all my initial scanning with lots of room to spare.
Pros:
Portability
Scanning speed for both color and black and white
Wireless - connects via wifi to your computer and phone
Autofeed
Cons:
Skewed images
Photo feeder page is additional

An Experience Like No Other

SkullCandy Crusher 360
An experience like no other
Packaging
The first thing you notice with the Skull Candy Crusher 360 is the weight of the box and how well they are packaged. When you open the box, you are presented with a rubber-like plastic traveling case and inside this is the most interesting pair of headphones I’ve ever seen.
Build
The build is a solid mix of metal, plastic and pleather-wrapped foam for the ear cups and head band cushion. The headband adjustment is smooth and stays put.
Battery Life
The crusher arrived needing charged. I plugged it into my computer USB and in about 10 minutes, I unplugged them and paired with my phone. The multi-purpose LED’s are red and flash sequentially to show the charging progression. They all turn green when charging is complete. Skullcandy says the Crusher 360’s have 29 hours of battery life and a quick 10 minute charge will get you 3 hours. Crusher 360’s also ship with an aux cable which you can use when you don’t have Bluetooth or when your battery is dead. The cord has volume and track controls along with a microphone for phone calls.
Fit/comfort
The Crushers fit is snug and comfortable, just as a premium headset should feel. The memory foam cushions and ear cups feel like butter. While these headphones are not noise-canceling, they do an amazing job of keeping outside sound to a minimum.
Sound
I have to say I was a little thrown by the sound of these headphones when I first heard them. The experience of the sensory bass is like nothing I’ve ever heard. I found it difficult to differentiate what at first seems to be a manufactured bass feel and the actual bass of the music. This was easily resolved by adjusting the bass level to match the sound and now I’m hooked! The adjustment is made by sliding your finger up and down the left ear cup. You can also see the level in the LED’s as well. The Crusher’s also do a fine job with high’s and mid’s as well.
I would have liked to see an app for these that provides a little more customization for the sound and bass levels similar to several other manufactures.
There is an included aux cable that can be used if the battery goes bad or to connect to a non-Bluetooth device like an older iPod. The cable has a microphone that can be used for phone calls, a button to play, pause and change tracks and a slider volume control. Mine came with the volume slider down and my first thought was that it was broken so keep this in mind if you use it. Also, you can use the aux cord with the headphones powered on to get the pounding bass as well.
Overall I am really impressed with the Skullcandy Crusher 360’s. If you are looking for literal head-pounding sound and knock-your-socks off volume, I can’t recommend these enough. The Skullcandy website says these are a limited edition so don’t miss out and pick yours up quick.

Exactly what I've been waiting for

First off, installation took longer than expected, only because the existing doorbell was unexpectedly wireless so this was a full wired doorbell installation.
Once installed, the SimpliSafe fired right up and connected to the rest of our SimpliSafe security system. I already have the top tier of SimpliSafe service so there are no additional fees for cloud storage for the doorbell. Also, the doorbell will record video along with the inside cameras anytime there is an alarm event.
The Video Doorbell Pro uses motion sensing technology to begin recording unlike other products which are always recording. When motion is detected it records for a minute with a few seconds of pre-event footage. Notification comes within a few seconds of the event, as it does with someone pushes the button.
As a doorbell, the unit records and plays audio and records the video. The video is crisp and the 160-degree field of view lets me see not only my porch and yard but the neighbors on each side of me. Audio is clear and the volume is sufficient to carry on a conversation with who ever pressed the button. The conversation is walkie-talkie like, where you have to push the button on your phone to speak then release to hear. There is a noticeable lag when communicating so it takes patience to get through it.
Video during the day is crisp and clear however the night vision is not as clear. I find that with a porch light and the night vision turned off, the video is better.
I was a little disappointed with the lack if documentation for the doorbell, including even online.
I am very happy with my new SimpliSafe Video doorbell and highly recommend it especially if you already have SimpliSafe as your alarm system.

Double the fun

The Phillips 7000 Body Groomer combines a traditional trimmer with a foil shaver with clipper edges.
When you take the unit out of the box you notice the solid feel and balance in your hand. I also like that there are no loose parts to get lost. The trimmer guard is attached and slides/locks at heights from 3mm to 11mm. You can also take it off for a closer trim. The foil end rocks both side to side and front to back to provide a nice cut from any angle.
The groomer arrived needing charged. Plugged it in (it uses the same charger brick as my beard trimmer) and it was charged in about an hour. It’s rated to run for about 80 minutes per full charge and I can see getting it. Each end of the groomer has its own switch and only one at a time will work.
The trimmer end works great, the blades are sharp and cut through my hair and beard effortlessly. The foil end cut mostly clean swaths on the first pass but needed several more runs to get the shave close. It’s not the closest foil shave I’ve had but its close enough for government work.
Even though this is a body groomer, and for that it works great, you can also use it on your face, beard and head. For beard trimming its perfect. For shaving however, the foil end has a large “bezel” around it to allow for the floating action along with the trimming blades on each side, making precision shaving around a beard or goatee difficult.
The Phillips 7000 series Body Groomer will be a perfect addition to my travel bag,

A Love/Hate relationship
on October 15, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
Fit
When I opened the box and didn’t see a selection of tips I was confused. Once I put the buds in my ears I was in love. With the always aware ear tip, there is only one size and it just fits. I was never concerned with the buds falling out of my ears, thanks to the ear hooks.
Sound
I was surprised how well these earbuds sound. Even with the open design, the bass is strong but not overpowering. The mids and highs sound clean and crisp.
Connectivity
And now for the hate part of our relationship. The buds paired to my phone and to each other with out a problem. These are my fifth pair of true wireless earbuds and every pair suffers the same problem, maintaining the connection to each other. It does seem that connectivity between the buds worsen when I’m listening to anything streaming, like SiriusXM or Pandora. When listening to downloaded podcasts or music the connectivity seems to be a little better. Also these buds are very susceptible to external conditions and city interference.
Battery Life
The BackBeat Fit 3100 buds have a rated battery life of 5 hours with an additional two charges in the case. Only wearing the buds about two-3 hours per day, after about 2 weeks I have not had to charge case yet. Ratings wise though, there are buds and cases with much longer battery life.
Controls
The buds are controlled with a combination of touch sensitive taps and harder presses, all of which work perfectly. You can change the taps in the BackBeat app but doing so causes you to loose the volume controls. All the optional tap selections worked well though.
The BackBeat app
I was disappointed with the app. First off, the app will not see the buds if you are playing them. You have to stop the music before the app will connect to the buds. Next, there are no sound controls. The app has a find my earbuds feature and the settings to change the tap.
Overall, when these earphones work, they work great. The sound is better than expected and you can hear what’s going on around you when listening at a reasonable volume.
I would recommend these to a friend that doesn’t live in a big city with interference.

Great sounding speaker
on October 15, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The SRS-XBG501G is another “party” speaker from Sony, with the dancing light bar and speaker lights and the ability to connect several speakers together for even bigger room filling sound. The difference with the XBG501 is that it also has the Google Assistant and Chromecast built in.
The initial connection took a bit longer than I expected and it seems you have to connect to Wi-Fi first before you connect to Bluetooth.
The speaker just sounds great. The sound is full, and the bass is thumping. All of which is adjustable by using the Sony Music Center app. There is enough volume to fill decent size room or yard to dance the night away. The “Live” feature really expands the sound and makes the channel separation apparent. This is a feature Sony has been using for years and it doesn’t disappoint in this speaker either.
Like other Sony speakers, the XBG501 has party lights, a ring around the speaker grill and a white light that shines on the lower middle speaker. These are controlled by the app as well. It’s said they dance to the beat of the music but they seem to just randomly flash.
The XBG501 is IP65 rated so its water resistant and dust proof. Unlike some of its smaller siblings, it is NOT water proof however.
Now, for the Google Assistant. Why? Google still has not released the full Assistant for devices that offer it built in. This is the second speaker I have with the Google assistant built in and it hasn’t been updated yet to offer the full assistant. You can not make phone calls on this speaker via the assistant unless you use a third-party app. Also, you must be connected to Wi-Fi for the google assistant to work. Had Sony developed a way for the google assistant to work through Bluetooth while connected to a phone, I would have been impressed. Overall though, not sure the Google Assistant on this speaker is worth it. Remove it and reduce the price.
Battery life is rated at 16 hours and it takes about 5 hours for a full charge. After several separate days of play I still have about 50% battery life remaining. There is a USB-C port that you can use to charge your phone. It’s nice to see companies finally keeping up with the times.
Overall, I like the rounded design and love the sound. The battery life is decent and the tripod socket is a nice touch. In my opinion adding the google assistant is just a waste and the un-synchronized lights continue to disappoint.
I would only recommend this to a friend if the price were lower.

Why?
on October 9, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
I have to say my first thoughts when I saw this little photo printer is why?
The HP Sprocket 200 photo printer prints 2x3 prints on a special paper called zInk which doesn’t need any ink cartridges or ribbons and clearly allows a device just a bit larger than your phone print some really decent prints.
You install an app, load the paper, connect the printer via Bluetooth and print. And it only took about as long as it took to read this sentence.
The app allows you to edit your pictures and add stickers, borders and frames and several other goodies. I am amazed at the quality of the prints that come out of this little device. You can peel the back off the prints and they become stickers. Great for scrap and memory booking.
The little kid in me says this is a really cool thing and I want it for Christmas. The grown-up in me says I wish I had kids to get this for.
It reminds me of the instant camera I begged for when I was young.
The paper runs about $5 for packs of 10 sheets and seems to be available everywhere.
The grown-up in me feels this technology is amazing and I wish there were larger sizes like 4x6 or 5x7.
I would recommend this device to anyone who wants to put a smile on their child's face.
That’s why!

The Earbuds to Beat
on September 22, 2018
Posted by: RonH
from Washington DC
The Epic Air Elite True Wireless Sport Earbuds are the third set of wireless earbuds I’ve had and I think they will be hard to beat.
Having two sets of wired JLab earbuds, I expected the sound to be on point and the wireless sports didn’t disappoint. Right out of the case, pairing was flawless. The buds paired to each other then paired to my phone. There are 8 different sets of ear tips so everyone can get the perfect fit. Unlike previous earbuds, the tips are located on posts in a section at the bottom of the case rather than just tossed in a little zipper bag.
The fit is the best ive had. There is a clip that goes around your ear to help hold the buds in. At no point was I concerned about the buds falling out of my ears. These clips also have the Bluetooth antennas in them which helps keep them from dropping out. This and Class 1 Bluetooth. Whichever it is, I have to say it worked flawlessly. At no point so far has the sound cut out in either ear, something that happens regularly in my other wireless buds. I was able to get it to cut out for a second by cupping my hand over my ear however.
But how do they sound? Amazing! There are three equalizer settings, balanced, bass boost and my favorite, JLab Signature which has tons of bass mixed with just a hint of treble. Unlike other earbuds, this setting is handled right on the buds rather than requiring an app. Simply touch the buds together for 3 seconds and they cycle through each of the 3 settings.
Speaking of touching the buds, the controls are touch sensors in each bud. Each side controls something different based on taps and holds.
Probably my biggest disappointment with these buds is a new feature called “Be Aware Audio” which is supposed to use the built-in microphones to allow outside sounds through so you can hear your surroundings. This would be great for runners, bikers and even if you wear them in an office setting so you can hear conversations with your co-workers. If you have the volume low enough, you can hear a staticky sound and if you rub your finger around the bud, you can hear it. I really like this concept and have seen it on other headphones but was disappointed in it on these buds. Also, it would be nice to have the directions give a bit more info on what to expect in this mode.
On phone calls, the other person was able to hear me clearly and I could hear them perfectly, in both ears rather than just one side.
Battery life, the Epic Air Elites are rated at 6 hours per charge with the case providing an additional 5 charges. The buds charge every time you put them back in the case, which is also how they turn on and off, just take them out and they pair and turn on, put them back, they turn off and charge. The case also has a USB plug you can use to charge anything else, like your phone or music player. I have not been able to wear the buds long enough to see if they meet the six hour rated time but I haven’t had to charge the case yet since I got them. The battery case is solid but it is a bit large to carry in your pocket. It is better suited to a gym bag or back pack.
Overall, these are the wireless earbuds to beat. The sound is great and adjustable to your taste, the fit is amazing, the battery life is best in class and the connectivity hasn’t dropped out yet.

Can this stove be used on a deck?

Per the instructions, this should be placed on a non-flammable surface like concrete and not used on decks, either wood or composite wood. While this is a compact unit, it does get very hot.
