Storage for DAYS!
on July 29, 2021

I feel like this review is going to be pretty short because this thing just works. With Game Pass, 1TB of space just isn't enough anymore. But 4?! I can load this guy up with everything I want to play without even thinking about it.
I understand the design of this drive to an extent because it's supposed to look rugged. But I don't know if it would stand the real test. The top plate is metal but most of the case is still plastic. I think it would survive most transportation if you take your console with you often.
Setup is simple. Just format it through your Xbox as external storage and you're all set. This isn't going to be as fast as the built in storage of your Series X or anything because it's not an SSD. It's about as fast of a USB connection as you can get but being a platter based hard drive you won't get the same speeds as the internal drive. You could use it to store games and move them back to your internal drive when you're playing them a lot. I would recommend this strategy. The benefit being you don't need to redownload things over and over after deleting them.
Overall, This is a good hard drive. It's massive. Has a high speed connection (even if the actual drive isn't an SSD so it won't be as fast as your internal drive) and is super easy to setup. If you're looking for a huge amount of storage and are OK with moving things back and forth for some extra speed, this is the drive for you.

All in one kit. Very nice and convenient.

Most of the things I record are recorded through my computer with a good quality microphone attached. I record game play and other things on the computer but I quickly found out if I wanted better picture quality of segments that included video of my face that recording on my phone was the way to go. But my phone has a pretty terrible microphone so I always had to do this hybrid setup of recording the audio on my computer while recording the video on my phone and splicing it together later and trying to get it as in sync as I could.
Enter this setup! With a nice little tripod and all the attachments you might need record a great looking face cam AND get good audio with the included microphone. It's so much nicer than my makeshift setup.
Setup took a minute to figure out what everything did and how it all connected but it become obvious pretty quickly. There's a nice set of instructions that sort of guides you through putting everything together and once you understand what everything is and how it connects it's easy enough to just slide your phone out of the mount without really disconnecting anything else so it's always ready to go.
Video and audio quality were quite nice. The audio was a lot better than just relying on my phone's built in microphone and the video is made even better with the wireless LED light. It's very bright and has a handful of filters so you can change the color of the light if you want or just soften it with the frosted white filter. Charges via USB-C as well so easy to do whenever it needs it.
I don't think there's much else to say about this. If you want to take your face cam filming to a higher level than just recording on your phone, this kit has everything you need to make things look and sound better with very little extra effort.

Good sound. Wireless. Great for parties.

It actually took me a minute to understand what "wireless" really meant with this speaker. I am just not accustomed to seeing a speaker of this size that doesn't need to be plugged in. But this thing is essentially one of those portable bluetooth speakers everyone has seen a ton of, but in a huge party speaker size. I don't know why I haven't seen more of these.
Setup is easy as any portable speaker. It has a normal power cord you'd find with most major electronic equipment so you can charge it. You can pretty easily connect to your phone via bluetooth and then you're ready to play some music. You can also download the Sony Music app and/or the Fiestable app (both of them recommended by my phone after I connected to the speaker) to fine tune some of the settings like EQ and lighting.
Sound quality is quite good. Bass might even be a little too heavy. I don't ever hear our neighbors who share a wall with us in our home but I was afraid they were going to knock on our door because of the bass on this thing. Turning off Bass Boost seemed to be a little better. Both options sounded really good though. I'm not a super audiophile or anything but I tried some lossless music through Apple Music and it all sounded pretty great to me.
There's a lot of connection options as well if you don't want to go the bluetooth route. There's 2 USB connections. One of them lets you just charge a device straight from there and the other one lets you play and charge at the same time. If you have a device with a 3.5mm jack, there's an input for that. There's also inputs for a microphone and/or guitar with a 1/4" jack. So you have a lot options for what you need to connect.
Overall, I like this speaker. I'm surprised more of these large form battery powered speakers don't exist since they are so large and don't need to be constrained by battery size. I'm sure this isn't the first but it's the first one I really noticed and, like I stated earlier, didn't even fully realize just HOW wireless it was until reading through some of the instructions. I think the sound is good and you can basically connect any device you have so if you're in the market for a good, portable, large speaker and this one is in your budget, go for it.

This air purifier isn't a small unit at all but it also doesn't come across as very large when you put it in a decent sized room. I think it's the slimness that makes it feel smaller than it is.
Setup was a piece of cake. Open up the box and even if you don't read the instructions, there are a lot of indicators that make it almost impossible to start up the purifier without removing the air filter from the packaging. I thought it was pretty well thought out.
Turning it on, I had to turn off auto mode and crank it up just to make sure it was on. The default settings were very quiet since it detected my air was 100% clean already. You can hear it if you try. We have this one in the dining room and you need to get pretty close to be able to really hear it. I imagine if you put it in a bedroom, you could probably faintly hear it through the night when it's very quiet. But overall, I felt like this air purifier stayed very quiet until cooking or blowing out a birthday candle when the air quality dropped below 100%.
The display on top and the side works pretty well to give you a quick overview of your air quality and what's happening with the purifier. There are a few settings for the display but I found the % air quality one to be the easiest to keep up so you could see what was happening at a glance.
I don't know what else to say about an air purifier. The thing works out of the box and doesn't stand out too badly in our dining room. Cooking or otherwise contaminating the air kicks the purifier into gear and it pretty quickly cleans things up. It just feels like it works.
If you're in the market for a decent sized air purifier and this one is in your budget, I'd say it's a good buy.

Wife is still using them in her salon
on May 12, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
This review is done from my wife's perspective. She's a hair stylist and has been using them for about a month now at her salon and she's, overall, pretty happy with them.
Some key points that from my wife about these trimmers...
- The blade detaches for easy cleanup. None of my previous trimmers had the ability to pop off the blade quite so easily. Usually there's at least a screwdriver involved when you want to really get the blade off. Dropping the blade while detached isn't catastrophic but you will need a screwdriver to get it back together again.
- Replacement blades are available. This isn't something you find all the time with other trimmers.
- You can adjust the blade to help achieve different fade lengths. Even the closest setting didn't make me feel like I was going to cut skin.
- Creates straight lines very easily.
- A bit heavier and wider than other cordless trimmers but not uncomfortable to hold. The built in grip section if helpful since the rest of the design has a very smooth texture.
- There's a built in loop you can use to hang the trimmer hidden by the battery. It's nice that it's hidden, but you do have to twist the open the bottom of the trimmer to expose the loop and then close the bottom again.
- The only real negative I've found is the power button. It's located awkwardly on the bottom side and is pretty hard to quickly turn on and off, and almost impossible to do with one hand. I've also accidentally turned them on while in the bag while traveling with them. You are able to twist the bottom section to detach the battery but then it doesn't fit as nicely in the bag.
Overall, they're nice trimmers and I do feel like I'll continue to use them at my salon. If you really need the ability to turn off and on the trimmer really quickly, I'd maybe steer clear of this one but other than that I'm pretty happy with them.

Not much more to ask for in a 1080p monitor
on April 18, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
This monitor replaced a Dell 27" 1080p monitor that worked... fine. But the FreeSync capability caused the monitor to blank out pretty regularly for a couple seconds at a time if you used it as it's highest refresh rate (144hz). Everything about this monitor is so much better and "just works". It might be a little more expensive, but unless I'm looking for a 1440p or 4k display, I can't think of many other things I want in a monitor.
Setup was pretty easy. I mount my monitors and it took me a minute to realize the screws to take the stand off were hidden behind rubber but I can't fault the monitor for that one. After mounting it and plugging everything in, it worked as you'd expect. The monitor stand felt sturdy and nice but I didn't use it at all. It comes attached out of the box so it's definitely the easiest way to get up and running.
One thing I find sorely lacking in most monitors is good menu control. It's usually just a string of buttons on the side, back or bottom and you have to fiddle around with them to figure out which one means up and down and left and right and select. Never a great experience. This monitor has a nice little joystick that clicks so you immediately understand how to navigate the menus. Understandably you don't have to do this super often but it's so nice to be able to quickly when you do.
As far as features included with the menu, you have half a dozen specialized game modes that are named depending on the type of game you're playing. These all actually change the picture quite a bit so finding the one that you like the most might just come down to cycling through them and sticking with whatever looks nice. I found some of them blurred edges a lot and some of them left edges looking much sharper, and then brightness and contrast ran the gamut as well so if you want to use the presets, just take the time to find the best one for you.
Then there's a blue light filter you can adjust, the standard brightness/contrast/saturation/color temp settings and another one for skin tone. There are sharpness settings and a handful of other gaming related post processing features I'm not even sure what they do yet. Speaker control (so you can turn them down/off because who uses monitor speakers?). And you can easily switch between the 3 inputs (2 HDMI and a DisplayPort). My all time favorite setting that I found after a couple weeks... Power Key Lock! My dual display settings are pretty specific and if my main monitor gets turned off, a lot of things need to be reset again afterwards so being able to just disable the power button is amazing and I never thought I needed it but I don't know if I can live without it now.
Color accuracy feels pretty nice. I haven't been able to get it to look exactly like my 1440p monitor which is also an IPS display but I haven't tried incredibly hard. This is my gaming monitor and color accuracy isn't quite the most important thing here. It's much better than my old Dell which is good enough for me.
And the feature that is going to get me to spend a little more on monitors in the future as long as I'm using NVIDIA graphics cards is G-Sync. So far I haven't had a single issue with it. It works great. No screen blanks. Running at a full 165hz at all times without having any issues with dynamic refresh rates is so much nicer than the hit or miss experience I've had with FreeSync in the past. G-Sync monitors tend to cost a little more than FreeSync but I'm sold with this one and will probably throw in the premium to make sure my monitors always have it in the future.
All in all, I can't think of much else I'm looking for in a 1080p gaming monitor. One day, when I upgrade my graphics card, I may move to a 1440p or 4k screen and will have to re-evaluate but for 1080p gaming, you really can't do much better than this. If this fits your budget, I would recommend it. If you're on the fence about paying a little extra for this nice G-Sync monitor over a similar specced FreeSync monitor, I'd 100% recommend splurging to anyone using an NVIDIA GPU. It just works.

What a tiny little beast!
on April 2, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
I play games on a PC that I upgrade when I can and keep working well. I also stream from that PC. So I spend a lot of time gaming on a PC. So when I got this laptop with specs that rival (actually surpass by quite a bit) my main desktop PC, I really don't know what to think anymore. This thing is a beast in a tiny package. The tiny package probably being the only downside I can find.
For starters, I think the only surprising thing to be was that the battery was completely dead when I opened it up. Not a huge deal but I'm used to at least seeing a little bit of juice in things right off the bat. Also, the packaging was top notch. I opened the box and the laptop lifted up to greet me. That said, the amount of empty space in the box was a little excessive. There is probably some cost savings going into using the same box for most of their laptops but this small guy could have comfortably fit in a much smaller box.
Setup is as you'd expect. The normal Windows 10 setup questions. There wasn't a lot of bloatware that needed to be cleaned up which is always nice. I installed drivers for the NVIDIA GPU from nvidia so I knew I was up to date. Then it was on to installing some games to see what we could do!
First things I tested out was Doom Eternal and was blown away. I maxed out all the settings and was rocking 120+ fps. The image was pretty crisp even though it's only a 1080p screen. The screen does have more pixels than a standard 1080p screen so the pixel density on such a small screen made things look very clear.
I felt like I couldn't get away with testing the laptop without checking out Cyberpunk 2077. This was on the 1.1 patch so things could be even better now. I wasn't smoking the highest fps possible or anything but I was able to test something I can't do on my desktop PC which was turning on that magic RTX switch. With all settings maxed and RTX set to medium I was getting a very playable 50ish fps. Everything looked great. This was with DLSS on. I turned off DLSS and things dropped down to mid-20s to mid-30s which is still pretty crazy considering the size of this thing. It's got a 3060 in it which I am not expecting to be able to get 144 fps with all RTX settings maxed so I was just seeing how far I could push things and was still pretty surprised.
Port wise, I would have enjoyed a couple more. You get 2 USB-A ports on one side of the laptop and then a USB-C port on the opposite side. I'm not usually a fan of ports on both sides especially if they aren't the same ports (giving me the same types of ports on both sides means I can do more to choose which side works better for me) since in this instance, I am forced to use the right to plug my USB-A stuff into. Stuff like my mouse dongle. Possibly my headphones. Right next to where my mouse will be moving. The only other option could be to get a hub to plug into the USB-C port to move those accessories to the left side. There's also an HDMI port so you can plug this into a full screen if you'd like.
General hardware wise, everything is pretty good. The build quality of the machine feels nice. It's not super "gamer" flashy like a lot of things that try and appeal to "gamers". I like that this just looks like a laptop and doesn't scream "GAMER!" with weird angles and RGB everything. The keyboard is not full sized but still feels ok to use. The trackpad is one of the better ones I've seen on a Windows machine. I guess they're finally catching up with Apple in the trackpad department (it's still not close, but it's gotten a lot better and is much more usable than so many other Windows laptops in the past). Heat dissipation FEELS pretty good and might actually be an issue for you depending how you end up playing. If you have your mouse hand right on the side of the laptop, you might get a little toasty after extended sessions as you can feel a LOT of heat coming out of the upper side vents when gaming.
I may actually end up using a larger screen with this because the screen size is currently my least favorite part of this laptop. That 1" between a 14" and 15" laptop doesn't sound like a lot but it's definitely noticeable. After seeing the screen size right away, the next thing I noticed was the smaller keyboard. This wasn't as much of an issue as I thought it was going to be but it feels a little weird right away. I got used to it pretty quick though.
Would I recommend this machine to someone right now? I would say yes for the most part. It's a pretty good machine with higher end parts in a time where it's not super easy to find good parts to build a PC with. I also don't feel like the whole system is terribly overpriced for a compact laptop. If you're looking for a system you can max out most current games (aside from ray tracing) then this might be a good option if you're unable to find the parts to build something else. Just slap a larger screen on this and plug in a full sized keyboard and mouse and you have a really nice system to game on that you can pack up any time you want.

Great microphone. Reasonable price.
on March 6, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
I stream on Twitch and have used this microphone for a couple days in lieu of my Blue Ember microphone. I've always wanted to try out a dynamic mic since everything I've used to date have been condenser microphones. I'm happy with the sound quality I'm getting out of this microphone so far and feel like as I tweak things further I can get the sound exactly where I like it.
Setup on the hardware side was insanely easy for me as I was just swapping one XLR microphone for another one. If you have an existing interface or mixer, this is just plug and play as you'd expect. I didn't use the USB interface for this but if it's anything like every other USB microphone I've used I assume the setup is pretty straight forward there as well. It comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable as well as a USB-C to USB-A cable so having the options there are really nice. Even though I'm not currently going to use the USB interface of the microphone, knowing it's there and being able to use it in the future on another machine if I need to is a pretty big draw for me.
Sound quality is on par with my Blue Ember. I'm sure a pure audio snob might be able to hear the minute difference but I just found it easy to connect it to my mixer and adjust the microphone settings to accommodate a dynamic mic instead of the condenser and things sounded very similar. I feel like I'd need to spend a lot more time tweaking either microphone to get things better than they are.
As for the Twitch side of things, since this is a dynamic microphone I can focus a little less on the noise gates and canceling out background noise like my keyboard and mouse even with the gain up pretty high. I would usually need to have my condenser microphone right up to my mouth and the gain pushed way down in order to eliminate a lot of that noise but there's so much more wiggle room with this microphone.
One complaint I'd have is the lack of a shock mount. I wasn't able to find one for sale in my admittedly limited search and it doesn't come with one. Moving my mic stand/boom or hitting the desk too hard does come through on the microphone so I'll have to be more careful with that.
Overall, though, I'm pretty happy with this microphone and will continue to use it and tweak it as my main broadcasting mic. Being a dynamic mic it's just a much better fit in the non-sound treated room I'm in. It does most of the heavy lifting as far limiting that extra noise so I don't have to rely as heavily on noise gates and other things to cover it up. It might be a tad more expensive than my Blue Ember but I would take the dynamic mic for my use-case over the condenser.

Great substitute for pads
on February 25, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
Instead of wasting milk with pads, the Elvie Catch does a great job catching leaks while you're on the go and unable to pump.
My wife hasn't had a lot of chances to use the Catch because of COVID and all. She's not at work as often as she used to be. But when she has a longer day and isn't able to schedule a time to pump, these come in real handy.
They're pretty discrete (I suppose it would depend on your breast). I was able to notice them subtly when she just had them on normally but it is really subtle. The fit is good and she didn't have any issues with them slipping or sliding while at work.
Overall, it's another good addition to our Elvie line of breastfeeding tools. She'll definitely be using this instead of the pads she had been using before from now on. Recommended for saving all the wasted milk on pads if you need to be away for a longer period and you don't have the ability to pump or feed.

Elvie Curve captures bonus milk in-bra with hassle-free, one-press expression. Less hassle than a traditional manual pump, Elvie Curve lets you effortlessly collect even more milk in three ways: while breastfeeding on the other breast, pumping on the other breast, or whenever your breast feels full. And, unlike other silicone breast pumps, Elvie Curve is contoured to neatly fit in your bra~no jutting out, so you~re free to be out and about.

Another great addition to our Elvie collection
on February 25, 2021
Posted by: swemoney
from Hanover Park, IL
My wife has the full Elvie breast pumps she uses at work already but it's always nice to have more tools for more jobs. The curve is really nice for collecting the run-down while you're feeding the baby on the other breast. We have another pump that does this but it's quite large and oddly shaped and it needs a neckstrap to keep it from spilling everywhere with the slightest kick. Because this is shaped to fit right in the bra, it makes it a lot easier to use discreetly and avoid spillage at the same time.
It might take a little bit of experimentation to get things to work great. My wife didn't have any real issues but she has heard of other women who weren't able to get a good fit right off the bat.
Definitely recommended if you want to save every last drop of milk without risking a random kick and everything goes flying.

Is the monitor free sync or g-sync?

It's G-Sync. The actual model number (not sure why it's not in the product title) is VG279QR if you want to check all the specs on Asus.

Does this board have settings for beginners etc like other boards from this company?

It has Beginner, Intermediate and Expert settings which I assume are the same ones available from other Hover-1 boards while using the same app.

eufy Security Wired 2K Video Doorbell. 2K Resolution, 5-Day Continuous Video Recording (CVR) on Secure Local Storage, No Monthly Fees, Human Detection, 2-way Audio, and Free Wireless Chime included.

Can you use an existing traditional doorbell chime with this, or do you have to use the eufy door chime?

I haven't tried to use my existing chime. The instructions do say that the doorbell will probably function but might work sporadically unless you bridge your current chime to give extra power to the doorbell. This disables your current chime so, I would say, officially, you should use the eufy chime if you want your doorbell cam to work reliably..

Expand connectivity on your Apple MacBook Pro or Air with this gray HyperDrive DUO seven-in-two USB Type-C hub. Two USB Type-C ports support Power Delivery for charging mobile devices rapidly, while the HDMI output lets you connect a UHD display. This HyperDrive DUO seven-in-two USB Type-C hub has USB Type-A ports and microSD and SD card slots for fast data transfer.

will this work if my MacBook Pro has a Kuzy case on it. The case wraps around the side of the computer right where the hyperdrive will go. Im wondering if the case will prevent the hyper drive from fitting flush or snug to the computer.

It's possible this could fit fine. The included magnetic support grip leaves a bit of a gap if you don't use it so you might be able to use this without that magnetic support and have it fit just fine. Don't quote me on this, though, I just know there's definitely a gap if you don't include the black magnetic support.

Is this Hyperdrive compatible with a (mid) 2015 macbook pro?

I'm pretty sure the 2016 MacBook Pro was the first one to move to all USB-C. To use this device, you need a MacBook that has 2 USB-C ports on the left side. If your device doesn't have USB-C this won't work. If your device has a MagSafe charger, this wouldn't be supported. USB-C only.

Safeguard your home with this Arlo security camera system. Its 4K resolution provides maximum clarity so you don't miss a single detail, and a siren is integrated so you can fend off intruders either remotely or while at home. This Arlo security camera system is weather-resistant, so it's functional rain or shine.

Can you pair Arlo pro 2 cameras with this system as well? We have 2 arlo pro 2 cameras we would like to utilize on the new system if possible.

Yes. The Ultra camera doesn't pair with the old hub but the old cameras will pair with the new one. The upgrade process was quite simple.

Always know what~s happening at your door with the SimpliSafe Video Doorbell Pro. Its crystal-clear 1080p HD video and 162~ field of view give you a clear shot of your property 24/7. Two-way audio lets you hear and speak to unwanted guests (and welcomed ones too) - even when you're not home. Have the SimpliSafe App? The Video Doorbell Pro will send instant alerts whenever someone approaches. And with Smart Person Detection, it can tell the difference between people, vehicles and animals. That means you only get the alerts that matter. Plus, when backed by 24/7 professional monitoring, you~ll have experts who are ready to request emergency dispatch when you need it most. This camera is designed for all weather extremes~so you're still protected in rain and snow. (Compatible with the SimpliSafe Gen 3 security system. Requires Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and existing wired doorbell setup with mechanical chime and a transformer with 8-24 VAC, 30VA max. Not compatible with digital chimes.)

Does this doorbell allow storage to the local network instead of a cloud server?

This doorbell does not currently allow local network storage. The app functionality is quite bare bones and you actually get zero recording capability unless you upgrade to their $5/mo plan for the camera.

Equipped with SENSE ENGINE technology, these earbuds make it easy to adjust sound modes with a single touch, so you control what you hear. Compact and intuitive, these Sony 1000X wireless noise-cancelling headphones stay comfortable for hours.

How many charges does the case hold?

Two. The buds, alone, will work for ~3 hours. If you include the case, you get 9 hours. So the case will give the buds 2 full charges.

With no wires in the way, Bose SoundSport Wireless Sports Earbuds keep you moving with powerful audio. Perfect for exercise and running with a sweat and weather resistant design and StayHear+ tips designed for comfort and stability. The Tile app makes your headphones easy to find if they ever go missing.

Are there any other means to charge these earphones than the advertised charging case?

The case that comes with these headphones is just for storage. I do leave my headphones inside the case while I'm charging them, but it's just a standard micro USB cable that plugs in to one of the earbuds to charge.
