It Ain't "Lord of the Rings"...

... but it ain't all that bad, either.
The second installment of Peter Jackson's rather bloated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein's memorable "The Hobbit" does exactly what the middle chapter of an good epic does: it takes the characters you've grown to love in part one, sends them to hell and gives them no chance of escape, setting up part 3 perfectly.
However, the film, even to someone who has admittedly not read Prof. Tolkein's masterpiece, feels bloated, with bits of silliness and overly-long scenes galore. I did not see the standard, theatrical version of "Smaug," nor will I, probably. Honestly, I purchased this Extended Edition for the rich, encompassing behind-the-scenes documentaries That's not to say the film is unwatchable... just a bit overwritten.

Everyone remembers the 1978 season long epic known as "Battlestar Galactica." Cheesy sets, cheesy costumes, cheesy acting, and cheesy special effects Rushed into production by Universal Studios as a knee-jerk reaction to "Star Wars" (and employing many of "Star Wars" special effects technicians), the original Battlestar Galactica, from the brain of television mastermind Glen A. Larson ("Magnum P.I.", "Knight Rider"), is rife with potential.
Potential that was masterfully culled from the series almost twenty-five years later by producer Ronald D. Moore ("Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", and "Carnivale") and sewn into one of television's most engrossing new series.
Sure, the new "Battlestar Galactica" had it's faults; it seemed to lose steam around season three and did that God-awful union episode, but it recovered and delivered what I consider to be one of television's more satisfying series finales.
The casting for this series is impeccable: Edward James Olmos as fleet Commander William Adama, Mary McDonnell as the President of the Colonies Laura Roslin, Kaytee Sackhoff as the brash, mouthy Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, Jamie Bamber as Lee "Apollo" Adama, James Callis as the egomaniacal Dr. Gaius Baltar and Tricia Helfer as the gorgeous, deadly "Number 6." The cast is rife with tremendous supporting characters, led by Michael Hogan as the sympathetic, if not alcoholic Col. Saul Tigh and Grace Park as the conflicted Sharon "Boomer" Valeri. It seems every character who steps onto the landing deck of the Galactica is rife with troubles and conflicts. Rich character development, breathtaking special effects, and solid writing (for the most part) make "Battlestar Galactica" one of those examples where the remake outshines the original.

Welcome to Jurassic Park
on August 12, 2015

Verified Purchase:Yes
Steven Spielberg's 1994 blockbuster about a dinosaur amusement park going to hell in a hand basket was (and, in my opinion, still is) a masterpiece, a benchmark in special effects wizardry. The story holds up, the cast is remarkable (and the supporting cast is even better), and the dinosaurs are remarkable.
An eccentric millionaire (Richard Attenburrough) develops an amusement park populated by dinosaurs, and invites paleontologists Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum to visit his little island. Of course, everything goes haywire, due in part to the nature of the dinosaurs, and in part to the nature of the humans running the place, including a systems analyst played with mustache-twirling evil glee by "Seinfeld" supporting actor Wayne Knight.
Sure, the movie is 21 years old, but it holds up to repeated viewings, even after seeing such CGI masterpieces as George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequels, James Cameron's "Avatar," and any of the Marvel comics movies. I say drag the family into the living room, pop this movie in, and take a trip to Jurassic Park.

Why watch "Fiddler on the Roof?"
on August 12, 2015

One word. Tradition.
This is one of the great Broadway musicals, adapted painstakingly for the screen. "Fiddler on the Roof" is the story of a simple farmer (Topol, "For Your Eyes Only") and his Jewish family living in the town of Anatevka in the Russian Empire of 1905. Tevya finds his life slowly spinning out of control as he marries of his daughter and finds his way of life threatened by the government's expulsion of the Jews.
The songs in this film are rich and memorable, the acting superb, and the setting impeccable. I would recommend this film to both history students and theatre students alike.

What Can I Say about a Foul-Mouthed Teddy Bear?
on August 12, 2015
Posted by: Telly1701
Verified Purchase:Yes
"Ted" was an amusing film from the gutter mouth behind "Family Guy," "American Dad," and "The Cleveland Show," writer/actor Seth McFarlane.
In "Ted", we get an actually heart-warming tale of a man and his childhood teddy bear, whom he wished could talk. His wish was granted, and little John Bennett grew up with his best friend, Ted, a teddy bear with a heart of gold and a mouth like a sailor.
Now an adult, Bennett and Ted smoke pot, drink beers, and watch "Flash Gordon" together. But Bennett's girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis, "That '70s Show", "Forgetting Sarah Marshall") thinks it's time that Ted go, so that she can remake John into a proper adult.
The cast is great, with Patrick Stewart ("Star Trek: The Next Generation") narrating and character actors Giovanni Ribisi ("Avatar," "My Name Is Earl") and Joel McHale ("Community", E!'s "The Soup") rounding out the cast. Don't expect "Masterpiece Theatre" here, kids, or even a cuddly Disney film, because that this ain't. But it's not a bad two hours spent, either.

I Love It When a Remake Comes Together...
on August 12, 2015

Sure it's silly, overly-violent, filled with bad jokes, little-to-no character development, and riddled with cliche. But look at the original source material?
An inter-agency cover-up condemns four soldiers to a life in prison for a crime they didn't commit. But Jessica Biel shows up and springs them, sending them on a fool's mission.
The casting is high caliber, with a great performance by Liam Neeson as the team's leader, John "Hannibal" Smith, and memorable turns by Bradley Cooper as the charming, smarmy Templeton "Face" Peck, UFC lightweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as BA Barracus (the memorable Mr. T role), and Sharlto Copley as the insane H.M. "Howling Mad" Murock. Gerald McRaney ("Deadwood"), Patrick Wilson ("Watchmen") and Jessica Biel ("Chuck and Larry") round out the cast.
This is not "Hamlet," don't get me wrong, but it's not "50 Shades of Grey" either. A fun watch, if you put your tongue in your cheek first.

This gritty crime drama follows Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) as he leads a group of detectives known as the Strike Team throughout the crime ridden streets of California. Though is goal of stopping crime at its source is admirable, his methods are anything but on the straight and narrow, and become increasingly corrupt as time goes on. Romantic relationships are equally difficult to navigate; Mackey's marriage falters due to several indiscretions, as well as the stress of paying for the education of a special needs child. Fellow Strike Team member Shane Vendrell's (Walton Goggins) marriage is equally rocky, and motivates Shane to pursuing a course of actions that would shake the team to its very core.

"I'm a different kind of cop"
on August 12, 2015

Back in 2001, we had a slew of TV shows featuring anti-heroes. "The Sopranos" had mob-boss Tony Soprano. "24" had Jack Bauer, a Federal agent who didn't even read the rulebook. And "The Shield" has Vic Mackey, who is referred to in the show as "Al Capone with a badge."
Mackey and his anti-gang squad known as "The Strike Team" police the streets of LA's Farmington district with an iron fist. And they've gotten away with it so far because Mackey's in tight with the police chief and because they get results. But now criminals are crying police brutality, and Mackey's Strike Force is coming under scrutiny from Farmington's over-zealous, career-minded captain, a detective with a conscience, and a community afraid of the power the police have.
This is a very well-written series, with great characters and amazing character arcs. It seldom sags, and features superb performances by Michael Chiklis ("The Commish", and soon "Gotham"), Walton Goggins ("Justified"), CCH Pounder, and season-long "guest" appearances by Glenn Close and Forrest Whittaker.
The only drawback is the packaging. It looks like a great, shelf-friendly package, but once you open it, you find the series split up between two very flimsy plastic crush that easily crush.
Despite the packaging, do yourself a favor: pick this up for a ridiculously low price, and strap yourself in: you will find yourself mesmerized.

This hard hitting release from the landmark mafia drama The Sopranos includes all 86 episodes of the show, following the story of Tony Soprano, a Mafioso living in New Jersey who strives to reconcile the brutal violence of his criminal life with his ability to function in his emotional and personal life.

The First Family of Crime in Dazzling HD

What's to say? It's "The Sopranos". The complete series. All 86 episodes. All the previous release's special features. And in high definition. What more should I have to tell you that will make you buy this set?
Crime boss Tony Soprano's rise and fall and rerise is legendary, and now all 7 seasons (well, 6, but 6 was aired in two parts and is packaged as such) are presented in the perfect boxed set. All of the past special features and audio commentaries, as I said, are ported over to this set (special features are NOT in HD) and a bonus disc of features old (from the previous complete series set) and new are presented.
But the topper for me is the packaging. As a rule, I HATE boxed sets. They come in packages that don't fit in on my shelf and have sub-standard disc storage (usually those terrible book/sleeve situations). But each season of "The Sopranos" is presented in a standard four-disc blue plastic storage case with new package art.
Is it worth the money if you already have the DVD complete series? Well, I owned the DVD complete series and found the compression of the discs pathetic. And the packaging was a big book with those slide-in sleeves that scratched the heck out of my discs. So, yes, it IS worth the upgrade just for that matter alone.
I will warn you, once you start sampling these episodes, you'll be stuck watching the entire series run.

A New Way to Watch TV

I know, it sounds like a sales slogan, but the face of television viewing is changing, and the Apple TV box certainly is a step forward. Not only are there apps for just about everything out there (except, disappointingly, Pandora Internet Radio), but the Apple TV box interfaces with your computer's iTunes library, turning your iTunes library into a virtual jukebox.
I mainly bought the box because I wanted a box that had access to HBO Go app, so I could watch the latest "True Detective" and "Game of Thrones" episodes on a real TV.
As I said, the lack of a Pandora app is frustrating, but the interface with iTunes is well worth the inconvenience.
If you don't already have access to the internet, and don't mind the lack of Pandora or Amazon Prime, then by all means, pop down the coin for one of these puppies -- it's well worth it.

Up, Up, and ... um... somewhere

Superman gets as dark, gritty, and Batman-like as he can get in this reboot of the Superman mythology from executive producer Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight" trilogy) and director Zack Snyder ("300," "Watchmen"). We know the story all ready -- baby Kal-El is sent from his doomed planet of Krypton across the universe to Earth, where he is raised by good, salt-of-the-earth people, and, upon realizing the full potential of his mysterious super powers, dons the mantle of Superman, the... wait for it... Man of Steel.
With an all-star cast (some of them I would argue their "all-star" status), state-of-the-art special effects, and the backstory of Superman, how can it fail? Well, friends, much in the same way that "Superman Returns" failed: it forgot that Superman was a light-hearted tale of the American dream. Many of my quibbles with this films are spoilers, so I'll keep them to myself.
So, you're probably asking yourself, "Self, why did Telly1701 even buy this movie?" Because, its faults aside, it is an entertaining film with a great supporting cast (Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Russell Crowe as Superman's Kryptonian father, Jor-El, "Law and Order: SVU"s Christopher Meloni, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner in heartrending turns as Superman/Clark's human parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent) and the ambition to be a new, different, kind of Superman movie, not inspired by Richard Donner's classic (but exceedingly goofy) film starring Christopher Reeve. It's worth a watch, and a quick prayer that "Superman Vs. Batman" will acknowledge some of the film's larger problems.
