WOW! Great Headphones!
on August 22, 2020

These headphones deliver on all their promised features. I charged them as soon as I unpacked them and have put them to use for approximately 10 hours without needing to recharge them. Sony states 30 hours is possible and I suspect that is true as they still report 100% charged. The noise canceling feature absolutely rivals my Bose QC15 and my husband’s QC25 over the ear headphones and I daresay, might be a little better. The speak to chat feature which is designed to detect the wearer’s voice to signal you are having a conversation, works seamlessly and brilliantly! I was able to participate in a webinar with no concept of the ambient noise around me (which included music being played throughout the house) and once I began speaking the headphones detected my voice and stopped cancelling the ambient noise so that I could clearly engage in a conversation with others around me without removing the headphones. Even though speak to chat was engaged, noise cancelling still dampened some of the ambient noise, so I didn’t realize how loud the environment really was until I removed the headphones. Once I finished my conversation the headphones automatically switched back to the sound of the webinar that I was engaged in. I also conducted phone calls from these headphones and experienced crystal-clear sound and no distortion was reported by the other party. Speak to chat does not engage for phone conversations so if you are on a call while wearing them they will not tune in to someone around you when you speak, this only works for passive audio. Sony’s Headphones app is simple to use and allows you to further customize your experience with the headphones. One of the features in the app is to photograph your ear location relative to your head so they can customize how sound flows out of the headphones and optimize how you perceive the sound. Through optimization in the app including an equalizer feature, you can configure the headphones to give you surround sound quality, but you must have a compatible music streaming subscription to take full advantage of it. Sony does offer you a free trial coupon as part of your headphones purchase. The headphones readily pair with two devices and very easily switch between them so that they active device is always dominant. This feature worked well between my laptop and cell phone. These headphones are lightweight and deliver amazing audio clarity regardless of musical genre and audio file type. The come with great travel case including an airplane adapter and USB-C charging cable and fold neatly.

Nice concept, but dinner failed 2 out of 3x

The smart cooker comes in somewhat bulky packaging if delivered to your home as mine was, but nothing crazy. There are no manuals or parts list included, though a user manual is available on their website if you look for it. You must be meticulous to ensure you have gathered all of the included accessories (steam rack, steam basket, spoon rest, ladle) and power cord as they were efficiently but not obviously packed in the box. This appliance is designed to be a one size fits all device in the kitchen. It can weigh what you add to it, sautes, steams, cooks under pressure, works as a slow cooker, will keep food warm, and can even be set to ferment and sterilize. The phone app gives you numerous recipes to choose from with completely guided step by step cooking instructions. The app integration allows you to choose a recipe which it then communicates to the smart cooker what you are going to cook and what steps you need to take to make the dish. and if you happen to have jumped a few steps ahead you can tell it to start at a specific step.
Getting the device connected to WiFi is pretty straightforward and the app is able to easily find the device. Once your smart cooker is powered on and connected to the app, additional recipes will download in the app. the support team seems very open to user feedback as I suggested a recipe edit to add chicken and received a prompt positive response. Over the course of a week, I have made 3 different meals with this unit, 2 of them from their recipes (Greek Chicken and Rice and Beef and Barley Soup) and one that I typically make on my own (pot roast with mushroom soup and dry onion soup mix. I was very impressed with the scale feature, but disappointed that you cannot cook solely by weight. With a built in scale the device could weigh every ingredient added to calculate cook times, but this has not yet been developed with existing software and firmware; I would definitely recommend the manufacturer do so along with creating a custom recipe section in the app to accommodate this feature.
My first attempt was to pressure cook my pot roast in soup gravy. I followed the app suggestion for manual beef roast and quick pressure release. I added liquid according my recipe and it should have been adequate. Alas, this is where the first problems arose and the smart cooker insisted there was not sufficient liquid and it was getting too hot ("Temperature too high, please add liquid or stir contents" error on display and in app). I did as it suggested and gave the pot a stir then re-secured the lid, only for the error to repeat. I added more liquids and even more soup, but the error perpetuated and it took about an hour of this song and dance before the smart cooker would get above 90% pressure. Once it finally got going, it was efficient, however the quick pressure release was the wrong setting for this application as I should have chosen either natural or pulse to avoid the explosion of soup gravy all over my kitchen that later ensued. The roast was tender and delicious, the mess from pressure release was mostly user error but might have also been averted if the app asked more questions in the manual mode (is this in gravy or starchy, etc).
My second attempt was Greek Chicken and Rice and this went over quite well. I was able to use the smart cooker in both sauté and pressure cooker modes. The app guided me seamlessly through cooking this recipe with a visual guide of what to do as well as a timer on screen. I was prompted to tap next when time ran out or as appropriate and this triggered the smart cooker to move to the next phase. The prep and cook time was relatively accurate, but if you are not accustomed to keeping your phone in sight when cooking this will be an adjustment. The app encourages you to complete all of your prep work prior to starting in two ways, first by showing the recipe before you start and again by making the ingredient list for prep your very first prompted step in a recipe. The chicken was cooked through while still tender and moist and the rice was also perfectly cooked. My only critique would be with the seasoning itself, but that can be adjusted to personal taste.
My final attempt with this smart cooker prior to writing this review was their Beef and Barley Soup. Everything started off pretty well in sauté mode to brown the meat and soften the vegetables as well as adding the other ingredients as prompted. I was even on schedule for a timely completion until it came time to start the pressure cooker mode, where things again went horribly wrong. I again saw the smart cooker reach up to 90% pressure and then it began displaying "Temperature too high, please add liquid or stir contents" error on display and in app. I assure you there was ample liquid in the pot and while it was steaming it would have been dangerous to add more liquid. **I will say that I may have added a little more liquid than the recipe called for before moving to pressure cooking, but this is also why I did not add more when it claimed to be too hot**. At this phase of cooking we were expecting dinner to be ready within 15 minutes once 100% pressure was reached. Unfortunately the "Temperature too high, please add liquid or stir contents" error continued well beyond this time with repeated removal of the lid and stirring, accompanied by adding frozen vegetables and canned vegetables on one attempt, but to no avail against this error message. Each time I re-sealed it, the smart cooker would reach between 79-90% pressure and kick back the temperature error. This sucked up a good 45 minutes of time. Once I made it past this barrage of overheating errors, I next encountered an onslaught of errors indicating the lid was not locked and sealed. I repeatedly removed the lid, checked the gasket, and set the regulator to “sealed”, along with testing the seal each time, until it finally made it above 79% pressure up to 90% but then it failed again and again causing me to keep troubleshooting it over the course of 45 minutes. After having my dinner plans delayed by an hour and a half of mishaps, I switched the smart cooker to manual slow cooker mode and let it go for 2.5 hours on high while finding something quick in my freezer to have for dinner. Four and a half hours after my target time for dinner and after we had already eaten, we had an excellent slow cooker Beef and Barley soup and had to wait for it to cool so it could be stored immediately before going to bed.
**Pros**
With the exception of my soup roast explosion, clean up is very simple and easy. Manufacturer states lid, gasket, nonstick insert and most other accessories are top rack dishwasher safe. I would advise against this as it is just not best practice.
The nonstick coating on the main insert appears to be of good quality and easily releases any food that has come into contact with it.
The onscreen display is bright and easy to read with adjustments available in the app and onscreen.
It seems that if you stick to the letter of a recipe the machine will work flawlessly.
Easy setup and app integration.
Quiet operation.
**Cons**
Seems clunky to use without app and phone.
Does not have physical buttons and user is dependent on rotating knob and click for selection as well as touch interface.
For a seasoned cook who is less proficient with a pressure cooker, the guided cooking in the app may create frustration as many steps seem like they should be common sense.
No manual override to force pressurization if the device thinks it is not sealed and locked.
I think the concept behind this appliance is a good one, but I am not really sold on it being a go to asset in my kitchen.

This sound bar has the WOW factor, WIFI setup poor
on June 24, 2020

Just to get the negatives out of the way, I will start with cons because I figure if the negatives are manageable upfront then they won't be a dealbreaker.
CONS: The quick start guide is decent, but completely pictorial and somewhat unnecessary. WIFI set up via Google Home app is mentioned at the tail end of the setup guide and a little vague for someone who has never used the Google Home app. Wifi set up in Google Home app was tenuous and slow (approximate 2 hours and the first hour and a half was just getting the Google Home app to communicate with the soundbar. The remaining time was firmware updates for the speaker. The process itself was simple once it finally worked, but I had to factory reset the soundbar a few times because of failed updates and Google Home communication failures. I have an Apple/Alexa household and I don’t use Google Home for anything so that could be a small part of the issue. Wifi set up is needed to fully enable ChromeCast and Apple Airplay. If your streaming device is Bluetooth capable then this is the easiest way to connect aside from direct HDMI cable. Google Home Setup is REQUIRED in order for the unit to perform firmware updates.
The JBL connect app does not seem to work with this speaker. Nothing mentions that it will, but nothing mentions it won’t either.
Noticeable sound loss on non-Dolby DVD, BluRay media made it sound like there was no center channel and top layer of audio was lacking; I did verify that this was not an issue with my BluRay equipment by testing the same films on both the soundbar and my home theater system.
Now for the PROS
PROS: Did I mention WOW?! Remember when all good things came in big heavy packages? This is no exception!
So this little 9.1 wireless soundbar system puts my 5.1 receiver driven home theater system to total shame for streaming and Dolby sound-based media. To give context, I tested this unit on my 4k Sony TV and Apple TV 4k as well as with blu ray, DVD, Bluetooth, and airplay streaming. I connected directly via HDMI to the TV, Apple TV, and BluRay player and did Bluetooth streaming via Apple TV and iPhone as well as airplay from iPhone. I played music from Evanescence, Black Lab, Korn, Camila Cabello, Weird Al Yankovic, Halestorm, Jurassic Park, Beethoven, Pavarotti, The Eagles, and Mad Season. I watched Iron Man, Avengers Endgame, Blue Man Group, Various shows on Netflix, Harry Potter (battle scenes from Deathly Hallows and the Quidditch World Cup from Goblet of Fire) and Transformers.
Bluetooth connectivity was totally seamless. Once WIFI set up is complete, airplay was enabled and worked well from youtube. There did not seem to be any sound delay when streaming wirelessly via AirPlay or Bluetooth. When the detachable speakers are placed in their rear positions you get the sense of true immersive surround sound. At one point, it was raining in a movie I was watching and I thought it was raining at my house despite being very sunny and clear out. The highs are excellent and the lows are deep and throaty.
For anyone looking to have excellent sound without a full home theater receiver system, I definitely recommend this soundbar. Just be prepared that older DVD/BluRay media may have some sound loss issues.

Cordless wonder!
on May 14, 2020
Posted by: ArmadaJim

I have had this tool for a few weeks and am very pleased with it. This flat iron is like no other styling tool I have seen. The corded/cordless design affords flexibility to style your hair without the hassle of working around a cord or for those who need more than 30 minutes to achieve their desired style the option to plug it in and keep going. No clunky batteries to keep up with or recharge like the old cordless styling tools that I used as a teen. It is definitely heavier than your average flat iron, but the weight is well distributed. The iron has a locking feature to lock the sides closed for travel or whenever you might want it collapsed rather than wide open. This iron comes with its own travel case and to ensure TSA compliance for those of us who always carry our own styling tools, they even created a jumper/pin you can remove to ensure the Lithium ion battery can’t accidentally engage in your luggage, making it carry on safe! To further ensure the battery can’t accidentally engage when the iron is packed in its included travel case there is a tethered cloth flap to slip around airplane jumper pin to keep it separated from the unit. The case does not provide enough room to pack the power cord or charging base with the iron, so you will need to find space for those in a different spot when traveling. The charging base is quite sturdy and has good weight to it as well so it is an excellent support to the iron and would not be easily knocked over. The power cord is a bit bulky and seems more like what you would expect to use for a laptop than a hair tool.
To operate you press and hold the power button then press the +/- temperature button to select your heat setting. Once that is done, the iron will beep to let you know it has reached your temperature, typically takes about 30 seconds. Once you have finished using the tool, just press and hold the power button again to shut it off and the power button light will pulse until the plates have cooled down.
I have straight hair that gets unruly when it isn’t washed daily and this tool has made it possible to complete my styling on a lower heat setting (330*) in less than 5 minutes where with my other flat iron I need about 10 minutes set at 365*. The lowest heat is 330* and the highest is 410*. The flexible plates have slots/grooves in them that might catch some hair types, but overall just allow the iron to smoothly glide over your hair.
I have been able to achieve curls with greater ease than other flat irons and have really enjoyed the ability to go cordless. Yes you could buy several hair tools for the cost of this one, but none of them will be quite like this one! Love it and you will too!

No more dropped calls
on May 11, 2020
Posted by: ArmadaJim
from Nashua NH
I have used a Wilson Electronics phone booster in my car in the past with great success, so a whole-home system seems like the next logical step. At home, our cell phones are the only phones used as we do not have a landline in place. I live in a rural area with OK signal (1-2 bars on my iPhone 8+), but had been experiencing randomly dropped calls and occasional inability to make calls despite signal registering on my phone. The system consists of the booster itself, an indoor antenna, and an outdoor antenna. Professional install was included with my device purchase and I would not want to do this DIY. It isn’t complicated per se, but I am not technical enough to have known where the cell tower is broadcasting from and inevitably had I done DIY, I would have crossed the antenna streams which would cause the device not to work. The booster and the indoor antenna need to be mounted within a specific proximity of one another typically in the same room. The outdoor antenna requires mounting at the highest point of your house but below the roof and facing away from the indoor antenna. Since having the device professionally installed, I am no longer dropping calls and have not had any issues with failed outbound calls. I have had to power cycle the booster a few times because its signal strength seems to vary, but I consistently get at least one green light on the booster. I have been using it for a week now. At best when first installed, I saw a full four bars of signal on my phone, but more consistently I see two bars and an occasional 3 bars. For this reason I am rating it 4* rather than 5. Had it consistently kept my signal at a full 4 bars or even boosted it consistently to 3 bars, I would give it 5 stars. This can vary based on your geographic location so someone else might experience something different than me. Regardless of how you measure signal on your phone though, I have no more dropped calls! I highly recommend this product!

HR Block has done it again and made doing your own taxes extremely simple. I have used their products for over 20 years and this year continues to work seemlessly. The only caveat is that if you are a Mac user you will need a Windows license and parallels to run this edition as Premium and Business was not produced for Mac OS.

I find the motor to be very fast which is helpful so it does not just grab and yank hairs. It is pretty straightforward to use, the only thing that would be a welcome addition would be a small LED light. Otherwise, it is a good value for the price.

Good sound, odd design
on December 30, 2019

These little headphones deliver great audio quality but take a little getting used to. They come in a nice silver metallic case for recharging and storage and a soft flexible pouch to store the charging case. As you would expect there are multiple sizes of ear tips and multiple sizes of their "patented silicone fit wings" to give you a custom fit earphone in almost any size you could need. Getting the fit right is very important because otherwise, these have zero noise canceling ability. Otherwise, noise-canceling is comparable to my over the ear Bose QC25 headphones. Call clarity was good on my iPhone and callers indicated they could hear me well overall. Callers did mention a few times during my initial trial that I sounded distant when I tried to call with both earphones in place, but this may have been a fluke as it has not repeated. One nice feature about these for those who are left ear dominant, the left bud can be used for making phone calls which is often a disabled feature with other manufacturers. These are a great set of earphones for an audiophile, but I found them a little tough to get the fit right and they don't like to consistently seat easily in the ear compared to my Bose SoundSport Free.
From a sound perspective, these are really great and the noise-canceling is really impressive from such a compact device. From a fit perspective, I would probably pass and go for something that consistently seats in my ear and doesn't try to fall out.

Great toothbrush now with visual cues
on December 18, 2019
Posted by: ArmadaJim
from Nashua NH
I have been using oral b rechargeable toothbrushes for many years and couldn't fathom why this one would be so different or how the price point could be justified; now I know. The toothbrush has multiple modes that it can be put into such as: standard, pro-clean, sensitive, massage, custom timer, and tongue cleaning. My favorite was pro-clean as it gave me a clean that felt most similar to the "I just had my teeth cleaned professionally" sensation you get when you leave the dentist's office. The tongue cleaning mode is neat but similar to a standard toothbrush setting. Massage is really for helping strengthen your gums and sensitive offers a gentler brushing vibration. I did not try it with the soft brush head as I prefer the floss action head. This toothbrush comes with a wall charger, a few brush head options, as well as a travel case that has a charging port built-in and a slot to hold your phone so you can use the app while brushing. If you are a visual person like me, you will love the app. I thought I had been brushing my teeth effectively, but with the app visualizations, I learned I had been missing a few spots. The visual feedback encouraged me to spend more time around each tooth as I could see what I had brushed (shown as blue teeth/spots versus those I had thoroughly covered shown as white teeth/spots). The app gives you trophies for 7, 14, 30, 60, 90, 180 and 365 day streaks of brushing, flossing, rinsing, tongue cleaning as well as offering timed journeys to improve gum care, plaque reduction, whitening, and fresh breath. It is important to note that the app will not count your daily brushing as a completed day unless you brush 2x in the same day. I became aware of this after I first used it, as I started my routine in the evening rather than the morning. There is a tool in the app that allows you the export brushing history to PDF so you could share your habits with your dentist or check up on your child's use. The grip on this toothbrush is a little larger in circumference than my previous brushes, which I really appreciated since that makes things easier to grasp for me. Someone with petite hands might not like the grip as much as a different or older Oral B power handle. If you are ready to step up your toothbrushing game or need to help a younger family member embrace good oral hygiene, get this toothbrush!

The Smart Cooker includes a built-in scale, automatic pressure release, 300+ built-in cooking presets, and more. The CHEF iQ ecosystem seamlessly combines the hardware of the Smart Cooker and the software of the CHEF iQ App to provide you with a premium culinary experience you simply cannot get anywhere else. Plus, it’s the only kitchen appliance that keeps getting smarter just sitting on your countertop with wireless firmware updates. Explore hundreds of exclusive Guided Cooking recipes in the app, then follow along with the step-by-step video instructions and send precise cooking parameters to your Smart Cooker at the push of a button. With Guided Cooking, you can create elevated meals right from your phone. Create custom cooking presets, tailored exactly to your liking and saved directly on your Smart Cooker for one-touch cooking. With four integrated smart sensors in the Smart Cooker, you can learn to cook by weight – no measuring cups or spoons are ever needed. Use your Smart Cooker as a standalone kitchen scale while the CHEF iQ displays the precise weight of your ingredients in real-time. Is this both Wi-Fi & electrical? I keep browsing reading the detail descriptions for one to say so

Yes it is WIFI capable via an app on your phone or tablet and you will need to know the password for your WIFI network to add it. It will require an electrical outlet in your home to plug into for power to cook and interface with the app. The WiFI feature allows it to communicate with your phone for remote monitoring as well as interactive recipes and cooking history, there are no other interactions served by WIFI on the device.
