good portable projector, especially at this price
on November 20, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good
-picture quality - i was actually surprised at the picture quality of this little projector, especially at this price point. as cheap as it is now for a budget projector of this quality, it would be very easy to either replace most living rooms’ main TV, or even a home theater on a budget.
-small form factor - physically very small and light
-3D - the added 3D is a bonus, although no glasses are included.
-price point - again, in the $600 range, quite surprising to get this level of picture quality.
-integrated speakers - you certainly won’t want to use them much, but for occasions where you move the projector and just need basic audio (for work presentations and meetings) they will suffice.
the bad
-heat/fan noise - there is a significant amount of heat generated, and the fan noise i thought was a little bit high.
-no vertical lens shift - placement will be important, especially if using with a screen, as there is no vertical shift (the ability to move the image left and right without moving the entire projector).
-zoom and focus - manual dials on the lens, so if this projector is mounted on the ceiling, you may need a ladder to adjust.
overall
this is a strong little projector, and fits the bill quite nicely in a budget conscious home theater set up or even as a replacement for an expensive 1080p flat screen.

tons of volume in a relatively small package
on November 14, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- sound quality - tons of volume and clarity, and even at high (and i do mean *high* - this little guy pumps out the sound!) volumes very little if any distortion. good spectrum top to bottom, nothing overly forward or distracting. just punchy and fun to listen to.
- alexa/wifi integration - the alexa integration may or may not be useful to all. if it is, having a portable speaker of this quality will certainly be a major plus. with an amazon prime music account, you don’t even need another device to play music - “alexa play foo fighters” brought up a nice shuffled mix of foo with nothing else attached to the speaker, even via bluetooth. pretty cool.
- design - attractive “360” design, rugged and waterproof
-battery life - rated at 16 hours at mid volume, and appears to be accurate.
the bad:
- pairing issues using my mac - pairing to my iphone was easy and quick, but for some reason pairing to my macbook pro had issues. i was never quite able to just use it as a bluetooth speaker with the laptop as i was with the phone.
- can’t keep continuously plugged in w/o the accessory charger - to me it’s a bit of a design flaw, probably necessary to keep the unit water tight, but in any case, the micro usb port is on the bottom of the speaker, meaning you can’t exactly keep it plugged in and charging unless you pay for the accessory charger dock ($40). would’ve been nice to have this ability without the extra cost.
overall:
i would really like to give this speaker 4.5 stars, but since we are limited in our 5 star review system to only using full stars, i’ll round up and give it 5 stars. the sound quality alone at least justifies that much. just a couple minor issues short of a full 5 stars in my opinion, but highly recommended none the less.

nice wifi thermostat
on November 3, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
-ease of install/setup - very simple install. instructions clear and easy to follow.
-design - compact, stylish touchscreen.
-UI design - intuitive, well laid out. indoor/outdoor conditions, color customization for the display, making it easy to match any taste.
-wifi connectivity, app control - being able to view and control settings from the app is fantastic
the bad:
-none that i’ve found so far
overall:
this thermostat is a replacement for a relatively old 4 wire thermostat in my game room. i was lucky in that the thermostat wire that was run actually included the common wire, though it was not hooked up to the controller board. (there are 2 options for installations with only 4 wires - using the G wire as common, or purchasing a $25 4->5 wire converter.) all i needed to do was connect that wire on both ends (controller board and thermostat) and everything functioned as expected. installation took maybe 15 minutes, and would’ve been shorter if not for the trip into the attic. once everything was up and running, the set up was intuitive and straight forward. one caveat, you do need to register for a honeywell account online to be able to use the app, but not a big deal for most. other than the typical thermostat setup and of course the stylish design, i can now cool off my game room before i go up there, with a click of a button from my phone. awesome!

homerun for sony, hopefully no hinge creaking
on October 18, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
good:
-sound quality - wow. fantastic sound quality. a bit of a V shape to the sound curve, but everything is present and has its place here, with not one thing overshadowing the other. bass is punchy and well defined, It’s forward, but not muddy. i haven’t heard the new beats studio 3s yet, but i get the impression that this sound is what beats in general are shooting for - energetic, punchy, clean, exciting sound. trebels and mids are also very clear without being fatiguing. these have quickly become my favorite pair of over ear cans, for daily drivers as well as travel. i wouldn't call them hyper accurate, but man are they fun to listen to.
-build quality - this remains to be seen, but for now they feel like an upgrade over the first series. i was an early adopter of the first version of this headphone, the MDR-1000X. i went through 2 pairs, and eventually had creaking on both, where the hinge meets the cup. hopefully that’s not the case with these, but only time will tell. otherwise, they have a premium feel to me, with sturdy construction.
-noise cancelling - not only ANC, but to varying degrees. it feels like this market is beginning to see some real competition, and that’s only helping the feature set. great noise canceling, controllable via the app, and the quick attenuation feature (by putting your hand over the right cup) is a fantastic cary-over from the first version.
-touch controls - takes a few minutes to get used to, but they quickly become natural.
-app control - a host of features which are controllable via the app i won’t go into here.
-comfort - maybe a hair below the bose competitor QC35 in terms of comfort, but still very comfortable. the sound quality comparison between the 2 makes these an easy choice. much as I love my QC35s, these win hands down.
-battery life - even better than the first version, rated at 30 hours.
-nice hard case included.
bad:
-the only thing i can put in the negative column is the ability to connect to multiple bluetooth devices at one time. to me, this is the only thing that the bose QC35 has over the sony. the sound quality more than makes up for this.
overall:
can’t say enough good things about these. from top to bottom, a fantastic pair of headphones. highly recommended.

not bad for the price point
on October 13, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
good:
- small - small form factor, small footprint.
- relatively quiet - the system fan is not overly noisy
- configuration - processor/memory/hard drive space, all relatively decent. for casual users you'll have plenty of space for files, enough cpu and RAM for web surfing and typical office applications and media.
- usb ports are 3.0
bad:
- only 2 usb ports
- optical drive is dvd, can’t be swapped because of the face
- mouse and keyboard somewhat cheap feeling. usb port on keyboard for mouse, meaning you have to use the only 2 usb ports on the tower for mouse and keyboard, unless you get a hub.
- video card - sufficient for basic tasks. probably not going to be gaming on it.
overall:
overall it’s a decent machine for the price point. good for daily use by the casual user, but not necessarily much more.

fantastic portable BT speaker
on October 13, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
good:
-sound quality - wow, this little guy sounds great. nothing missing from the spectrum, from top to bottom. lively, punchy, energetic, and clean, and no shortage of volume. very impressive at this price point.
-battery life - also impressive, about 30 hours at half volume, or about half that time at full volume.
-ease of use - buttons for power, pairing, and source (BT or aux). pairing happened quickly and only took a few seconds before I was up and running.
-design - somewhat industrial design, but very high quality feel and appearance. also has a leather handle for carrying, a usb port for charging external device, and an aux to connect an external player should you need to.
bad:
-not bad by any means, but some may not like the more industrial “old school” design. i personally quite like it, but i’ve always been a function over form kind of guy myself.
-no included remote. I personally don't mind as I wouldn't use it anyways.
overall:
-highly recommended. fantastic quality of build and design at this price point.

ok for light duty cleaning
on September 25, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- relatively light and easy to use, unless you're trying to clean something a little more substantial. at that point, it takes quite a bit of scrubbing force.
- does ok for lighter cleaning, certainly not great. i found that it was better at cleaning when used as a steam wand instead of a mop - something like a dirty grout line or smaller, targeted area. with the mop attachment, it felt like i was essentially wiping the floor with a hot, wet towel.
- long power cord
-multiple attachments and lengths
the bad:
- cleaning - for daily “light duty” cleaning, it may be fine. that is, if the floor is mostly clean already, you just want to wipe it down. if you need to clean up anything of substance, this might not be the right tool for the job.
- goes through the small water reservoir fairly quickly. but then, this is a trade off between capacity and weight, since you are carrying the water in the handle when you use it.
overall:
-seems fairly well built and the steam function has its uses, but for anything but the lightest of cleaning chores, i didn’t find it to be all that effective.

super comfortable, fantastic pair of ANC over ears
on September 24, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good:
- sound quality - slight V shaped sound curve, but otherwise very balanced in my opinion. certainly not going to be overly bass heavy, but not lacking bass at all. not fatiguing to listen to, in fact the opposite. between the fit and the sound quality, these have become my go to pair of cans not only for traveling but for daily use. the sound quality feels very close to the QC version I, after that previous version had its firmware updates (beforehand, the QC I sound was quite anemic, boring, and flat. bose did a good job updating these to a much more immersive and exciting sound with these firmware updates). the QC II out of the box sounded great to my ears, for multiple different genres of music.
- ANC - still industry leading, but now we have the ability to control the level of noise canceling, with the addition of high, low, and off. this can be controlled in app, or with the new button on the left can (which can also be repurposed to select google assistant if you wished.)
- comfort - somehow a mix of “not too tight” and “don’t feel like they’re going to fall off”. bose tends to have super comfortable headphones, and these are no exception. you can almost forget you’re wearing them.
- bose app / connectivity - again, the bose app is the best i’ve tried hands down. connectivity to multiple devices (2 simultaneously, automatically switching back and forth depending on the signal. i.e. listening to music from your computer, take a call automatically from your phone without switching over manually. pretty cool stuff.) also, the ability to switch your connection to another device via the app (without having to go manually disconnect) is priceless.
- styling - typical bose styling, which you either like or you hate. i like it personally.
- carrying case - nice protective case.
- battery life - also leading the pack of ANC headphones is the rated 20-30 hours, depending on what configuration you’re using (ANC level, wired, etc.)
the bad:
-none really to speak of
misc:
- some may prefer a more “beats” style sound curve, i.e. more bass heavy.
overall:
fantastic pair of ANC earphones, but aside from the button on the side to either activate google home assistant or change the level of ANC, not a ton has changed from the previous version of QC. if you have version I, you may not find much of a need to update. if you don’t, i can highly recommend version II.

great blender for pretty much everything
on August 29, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
the good
-solid construction, feels very durable and well made of quality materials. only time will tell how well it holds up, but it certainly feels nicer and blends better than any other blender i've owned.
-as with most blenders, pulse and constant on settings, but very fine control over speed via a dial (similar to something like a volume knob)
-lid/tamper feature - restricted from the blades by a collar and the lid
-power to spare - could probably blend concrete (but please don’t)
-ability to actually make hot mixes, i.e. soup, just with the friction created by the blades
the bad
-no timer feature - at this price point, would’ve been nice, but not a huge deal
overall
-highly recommended, fantastic blender

solid sound quality, slim design
on August 12, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
from Glendale, AZ
good:
-design - super slim and light. nice styling. physical buttons on the back (which will probably never get any use).
-sound quality - good (but not great) once tuned a bit. out of the box, the sub sounded boomy and undefined. once i bumped the treble up and the bass down a few notches, it sounded much more cohesive and tight.
-wireless sub - easy placement in a variety of areas, just need access to an outlet. the compact design is nice, but volume-wise won't be able to fill larger rooms.
-intuitive mobile app (Music Flow)
bad:
-sub just a bit on the muddy side, but not overly bad.
-overall volume may not fill larger rooms
-single HDMI input, which means no input for additional playback devices or game consoles. a workaround for this is to connect those devices directly to your TV, then use optical out to the soundbar.
-no decoding for TrueHD or Master audio tracks
overall:
solid soundbar from LG. perhaps not as clean and accurate sounding as some others in this price range, but certainly not bad either.
