well featured entry robot vacuum
on July 28, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
price - fairly competitive for robot vacuums
wifi/app/voice control
app - intuitively layed out and nice feature set. lifetime performance log and weekly schedule
battery life - fairly good at 60-70 minutes.
low profile - at 3.7", not the lowest in this category, but low enough to clean under most all but the lowest profile furniture.
virtual wall/halo barrier - either create a 10' barrier to prevent entry, or a "halo" of 4' around an object
strong cleaning suction
the bad:
can get stuck by higher pile carpet or rugs
has trouble navigating dark colored floors
can have trouble with small objects on the ground - floor needs to be relatively free of clutter
noise - no quieter than a traditional vacuum
overall:
4 stars with the price point at $325. any higher and you could probably get a bit more bang for your buck going with another model.

great sound, comfortable fit
on June 29, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
-sound quality - much more punch and life that you generally get from in ears. with the proper fit, they have plenty of low end and tons of volume. great spectrum from top to bottom with a slight V shaped sound signature.
-battery life - rated at 8 hours
-quick charge - only takes about 2 hours for a full charge from completely drained.
-snug, comfortable fit. this part is important. if you don't get a proper fit, they can sound tinny and lack bass, leading you to believe they sound bad. good fit = great sound.
-good call quality, noise cancelling mic
the bad:
-no carrying case. at this price point, for this quality of sound and wireless, not a huge mark against them.
-not sweat proof - it remains to be seen now they fair after a stretch of really sweaty workouts, but so far for me they've been fine for me in the short term.
overall: for the price point, these easily compete with other wireless in ears that cost 50% more. make sure you get the right ear piece size to get a good fit, and the sound is fantastic. certainly not what i would call "bass head" in ears, but just a bit forward on the low end with tons of presence from mids and highs. very enjoyable listening experience.

nice upgrade over flatscreen speakers
on June 21, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
samsung soundbar review
having primarily used full sized speaker setups in the past, this is the first soundbar i've actually owned. while it won't necessarily hold up to, say, a full 7.1 speaker setup, among soundbars it's a good option to improve the overall quality of sound without going overboard on budget.
the good:
-sound quality - certainly not going to fill up huge rooms, but fairly good spectrum of sound from top to bottom. clear with good presence.
-design - sleek, slim, and somewhat futuristic looking. should complement a flascreen nicely.
-setup - hdmi, optical, bluetooth, or wifi connectivity. all but wifi were fairly intuitive, and seemed to work well (see below for wifi).
-theater modes - surround sound processing for different listening tastes.
the bad:
-remote not intuitive at first - for the life of me i couldn't figure out how to turn up the volume...the remote button has both a press function (mute) and a click upwards/downwards function (to adjust volume). once i figured that part out, it made sense, but was a bit frustrating at first.
-bass - some will want more low end, but for most uses it will probably suffice. it won't be thunderous, but it's significantly better than flatscreen speakers.
-wifi connection (samsung app) - operation via wifi sounds great, but using your mobile device, you're required to go through the samsung wifi app. shouldn't be an issue, except that using a third party service for music, in my case apple music, almost all of the music errored out, only available directly through the apple music app. bluetooth works well enough for this purpose, but it is tied to the proximity of the speaker as opposed to the wifi signal range. this feature needs some work.
misc:
-form factor - long, slim design may not be for every setup.
overall:
for my taste, this soundbar is a good fit for apartments or smaller living rooms with TVs for casual viewing. it might also work well for those just not wanting a big speaker setup but still want decent sound. admittedly, i tend to gravitate towards the more wall rattling theater experience myself, but for more generic TV watching, this soundbar nicely fits the bill.

amazing projector for home theater on a budget
on June 17, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
i'm not sure exactly what i was expecting when i unboxed this projector. i've always wanted one, but i've always been a bit skeptical of them. i can say that, after doing a preliminary setup of this projector, those fears are laid to rest. wow...this is exactly how movies were intended to be watched. i have a 65" samsung 1080p in the living room, and it's great. it's more than great, it's something i've really enjoyed watching movies and shows on. to this point, i had no idea what i was missing. watching TV on the samsung is just that - it's watching *TV*. when i fired up the epson projector however, i stepped into the realm of the *cinema* experience. i can with no hesitation, i am absolutely blown away by this projector, to the point where i needed to write a review even before i had the chance to properly set it up in a home theater environment. for the record, i only did a cursory set up with the projector sitting on a dresser and shown on a wall about 13' away. the picture itself was about 110" on the diagonal. for my source box, i used an apple tv 4, with both plex (full 1080p bluray encodes) and itunes store movies/shows. i had to get within about 3-4 feet to even begin to make out individual pixels, with 1080p source material.
the good:
picture quality - again, wow. the picture is absolutely fantastic. while not a true 4k, you'd be hard pressed to tell it by watching. it uses a technology called pixel shifting to create "4k enhancement" picture, and it is *very* effective. though i wasn't able to test them out, HDR and 4k content are bound to be outstanding, if 1080p upscaled looks this good.
quiet - a very low fan hum, barely audible. in a proper home theater setup, probably would not even be noticeable.
warm(not hot) - a lot of projectors can get quite hot. this one runs significantly cooler, what i would characterize as very mild to the touch.
easy set up - out of the box, i had to change very little about the setup, mostly due to lens shift and keystone (due to physical placement of the projector).
easy configuration of settings with motorized lens via remote (focus, zoom, lens shift, keystone)
the bad:
is going to be the main reason behind other expenditures, including a popcorn machine, theater seating, black out curtains, not to mention the movies themselves.
more time spent inside watching movies - i'm going to have to force myself to get up occasionally and leave the awesomeness that is this viewing experience to go outside and oh, i don't know, do stuff that doesn't involve watching movies. with this projector that's going to be easier said than done.
miscellaneous:
needs controlled light for best viewing - dark is fantastic, mid level lighting is really good, but in bright rooms the picture suffers from wash out. probably not the best for typical living room viewing. pretty typical of all but the most expensive (think $10k+ in price) projectors. controlled lighting is fairly important for this epson, but not necessarily a concern for placement in an area such as a home theater.
overall:
all kidding aside, this projector really is a fantastic piece of home theater equipment. match it with a good quality screen, a decent audio setup, and you've got yourself an incredible home theater setup. the 4k enhancement does a great job of replicating 4k (unlike "faux 4k" of the past) even when upscaling 1080p content. highly, highly recommended, especially at this price point.

nice over ears with great sound
on May 25, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
headphones are of course largely subjective to a certain degree. some prefer accurate reproduction, some prefer more ‘excitement’ in their sound, others like heavier low end and some will prefer mids or highs. at the end of the day, a review has to pick one area and give an all around score in my opinion. i personally tend to prefer a more exciting and engaging sound, balanced in all spectrums with neither too much of any given frequency pushing forward (maybe just a tad more V shaped than “flat”). with that in mind, here’s my take on these headphones.
the good:
-comfort - while maybe not quite as comfortable as some of the Bose lineup, the plush ear pads and over hear design lead to a very comfortable headphone. i felt essentially no physical fatigue wearing these over long listening sessions.
-nice design - Audio Technica and Sony seem to have a very similar design strategy, where certain models of their products resemble each other quite a bit. that fact aside, these are very stylish looking headphones in my opinion.
-codec support - SBC, AAC, aptX all supported. lights on the side of the phones tell you which is in use at any given moment, which is a nice touch.
-15 hour battery life - there are certainly headphones with longer as well as shorter battery life. at 15 hours, they are at least good enough for a typical day’s use.
-remembers previous 8 devices paired with
the bad:
-touch sensitive button - i personally find this to be the biggest flaw in these headphones. i would much prefer a tactile button to know when or if i’d pushed it. i have trouble finding this little spot to either hit or swipe, and often i either double tap it or miss it completely.
-lack of physical bluetooth pairing button - if there is one, i can’t physically find it or mention of it in the user manual. the only way i’ve found to pair with multiple devices is to make sure it’s not able to find any previous ones. it then goes into automatic pairing mode and i'm able to pare with a new device.
-no included physical case
-cannot be played via cable, only wireless
could be good or bad, depending on your taste:
-somewhat moderately V shaped sound signature. i found them to be quite engaging and fun to listen to, for different types of music and movies as well. at higher volumes, i heard some slight sibilance. some might find them a bit fatiguing over longer listening sessions at higher volumes, where perhaps slightly rolled treble wouldn’t be.
-no ANC. depending on your usage, this may not be an issue. i have yet to try them on a plane, so i can’t speak to their passive noise cancelling, but for my daily use i don’t find it a problem.
overall:
very nice sounding pair of wireless cans with only a few caveats in my opinion. a solid option in this price range.

great looking, good (but not great) sounding

the good:
-beautiful craftsmanship. the design and build quality are superb in my opinion.
-compact design, actual speakers rotate toward and fold flat for case storage or just for sitting around your neck.
-on ear design, ear pads are lush and comfortable. after stretching out the headband a bit, i found them quite comfortable for longer listening sessions.
-2 included cables, one shorter for mobile phone use, one longer for home use.
-small, hard case for cables included.
the bad:
-no included hard case for headphones themselves. while the included bag is nice, it’s not very protective. however, the headphones do seem to be built like a tank, so perhaps not a huge negative.
-for those with larger head sizes, these will not fit. i would consider mine fairly average, and with the yoke fully extended, they just barely fit. a bit more extension room would be nice to fit larger head sizes.
could be good or bad, depending on your taste:
-sound quality - recessed treble, but otherwise very warm and full of body. for lovers of brands like Beats, these would absolutely be a step up in listening quality. the lack of treble leads to essentially zero fatigue on long listening sessions, but to me still feels like a bit of detail in the music could be lost as a result. depending on your taste in music and in headphones, this may not be a deal breaker for you.
-bass is nice and tight, very punchy without feeling overwhelming or muddy.
overall:
quite nice headphones, but personally i would’ve preferred slightly dialed up treble to compete a bit more with the mids and bass.

good hair dryer, reduces dry time
on May 5, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
The good:
The Panasonic nanoe hair dryer came with 3 attachments, which were easy to attach/remove. The temperature and airflow control buttons were big and easy to use. I used the quick dry nozzle attachment, and it did seem to reduce the time it took to completely dry my hair (I have medium length, straight hair.) I was pleasantly surprised with how straight my hair looked after drying, so I didn’t feel the need to use a flat iron afterward, and with how little static my hair had.
The bad:
I do wish the hair dryer was a little more compact or had a
retractable cord for storage.
But overall, satisfied with the product.

fantastic receiver
on April 27, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
pros:
-sound - certainly the most important feature of a home theater receiver, in my opinion, is the sound quality. this receiver delivers an exceptional sound quality, and at 165w by 7 channels, plenty of power as well. after an initial calibration setup, the imaging of my theater setup sounds fantastic. audio is crisp and powerful. from highs to lows, the full spectrum is well represented.
-setup / calibration - using the included microphone, setup was quick and easy. there is an automated setup wizard that walks you through the initial functions and calibration setup. the only thing it recognized incorrectly in my setup were the size of the rear speakers (setting them as large when they are actually small satellites).
-menu system - this receiver includes 2 menu systems, one “amp” menu that is common to most Sony receivers, and a “home” menu that shows up on the TV screen and is much more user friendly and easy to navigate.
-features - i have not tried a full 7.2 atmos setup as of yet, but my 5.1 setup sounds amazing. the introduction of the phantom surround back channels, wifi connectivity, included chromecast, a wealth of hdmi inputs, codec support, hi res audio, and of course the power rating are all features you would normally see in higher priced receivers.
-price point - at release, a price tag of $600 sets this receiver apart, and should compete with much higher priced receivers.
cons:
-power on volume control - previous to this receiver, i had a nice mid-level Onkyo receiver. this receiver bests that one in every way except one - the Onkyo had a volume setting for when you power on the receiver. no frantically trying to turn the volume down if you were last listening to something louder and forgot to turn it down before you turned it off. it is something i am personally willing to deal with, however, for the step up in power and sound quality with the Sony.
misc:
-hdmi control seems a bit fidgety for my taste (though that is likely more an hdmi spec issue than a Sony issue). i personally use an Apple TV to turn on both the receiver and a Samsung TV. sometimes the input will stay on Apple TV, sometimes it will change over to the TV setting. easy enough to switch it back, but a little quirky none the less.
overall:
wow, wow, wow…for the price, i haven’t personally seen anything that can compete with this receiver. it’s got a ton of features, and amazing sound clarity and power. highly recommended for the living room or the media room home theater enthusiast.

fantastic handheld vacuum, great w/ or w/o pets
on March 22, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
• suction - fantastic suction for a handheld, rivaling some full sized vacuums I would imagine (probably not quite a full sized dyson, but certainly some entry to mid priced options)
• accessories - abundance of accessories to match your needs, either as a handheld (small / short wand or smaller roller brush) or as a pseudo full size (long tube, wider roller brush)
• weight - at 6lbs, very light and easy to move around.
• noise - has 2 suction modes, a high and a low. at low mode (still enough suction for most jobs) it is very quiet. even at high mode it’s not quite as loud as my old hand held, with significantly more suction.
• easy to clean - the suction assembly pulls upward and the base flap pops open, making for easy cleaning. a turn of the little blue knob on top of the suction assembly pulls the filter out.
• long battery life - rated at 30-40 minutes, plenty of time for a handheld (small to medium jobs). for larger homes / areas, a full sized model will still likely be the vacuuming foundation, but this is still a great addition either for convenience or for those spots that are tough to get with a corded vaccuum
• hanging wall charger - easy to mount (screws and anchors included) and wall charger fits into the hanger
the bad:
• flap on bottom - until you get used to it, the bottom flap opening can inadvertently dump a bit of debris out of your intended drop zone, i.e. beside the trash instead of in it. pulling up on the little red flap pulls the entire suction assembly upward, and at the top of the pull, the bottom flap pops open. long story short, clean this vacuum directly over the trash can.
• no trigger lock - a lock to set the trigger on would’ve been a nice touch. while i didn’t find this to be an issue personally(it is a relatively light press of the trigger that activates the vacuum), my wife didn’t care for it.
miscellaneous:
• when used as a handheld, this vacuum is very powerful and capable. when used with the full sized attachments, maybe just slightly less, but still serviceable in my opinion. still plenty of suction for cleaning medium sized areas quite well. the weight distribution (all in the upper part as opposed to on the floor, as in typical full sized vacuums) takes some getting used to.
• capacity - not exactly small, but for those who maybe have larger dogs with long hair or something similar, they may find that the bin fills up pretty quickly because of the suction power.
overall:
not exactly a replacement for a full sized vacuum, certainly for a deeper cleaning of the worst messes, but none the less, a very good hand held with tons of suction that can convincingly substitute for a full sized vacuum for most jobs. my one complaint with it personally would be the price point, but then this particular brand has always been a bit on the steep side.

fantastic android tablet
on March 17, 2017
Posted by: bd43274
the good:
• thin, light, beautiful glass and metal design. gives it a very premium feel, much more so than previous models in my opinion.
• AMOLED screen - wow, picture quality is amazing. colors pop, blacks are inky. visually it is quite stunning, and putting the Tab S3 beside my old iPad Air 2, the iPad simply looks washed out in comparison. can’t wait to see HDR content on this screen.
• speed - buttery smooth response. multitasking (split screen or PiP) feels much faster than previous models, with no noticeable lag moving between applications.
• 4GB RAM - not earth shattering, but certainly sufficient.
• S pen support - depending on how you interact with the tablet, you may find that this is really interesting and useful, or a cool feature that will go unused after the first week. certainly could have its applications for creative work or note taking.
• external memory via micro SD card, up to 256GB. one of my biggest complaints with iPads that continues to be supported by Samsung, that is, support of external memory cards.
• big battery, rated at 12 hours (while playing video) and supports fast charging
the bad:
• possible negative - with all of the glass in the design, may not be quite as rugged as previous models. could be prone to cracking if dropped.
miscellaneous:
• speakers struck me as ok, not great. not much really expected for speakers in something this small and compact.
• fingerprint scanner feels the same as previous models, capable but not improved
• USB type C charger
• keyboard case is included in preorders - this case is a big improvement over previous models. very light and thin, and gone are the clunky snaps of old. the new one is entirely magnetic, and feels quite secure. keys have good spacing and key travel. interestingly, it is not connected via bluetooth, nor does it run on its own power. it connects via physical connections on the side of the tablet, and uses the tablet’s power as well. in practice, it works quite well, unless you move the tablet around to the point where the connection is jostled.
overall:
i was quite impressed with this new iteration of the galaxy flagship tablet, if for nothing else but the picture quality and smoothness of the interface. if you live on the android platform, this tablet is highly recommended. it absolutely feels like a worthy upgrade from the S2, and will give the iPad pro some stiff competition.
