A pretty good replacement for 1/2 the price
on April 21, 2023
Posted by: gwtbike
This band does a decent job at replicating the look and feel of the genuine Apple Watch Ultra Alpine loop while coming in at half the price.
The material is nearly the same as the genuine Alpine loop where it's soft and comfortable and it has a nice bit of stretch to it but I noticed a little bit of excess or frayed material on one end of the loop. Not really a big deal though - the rest of the band looked perfect.
The hardware to attach to the watch as well as the hook to secure it on your wrist seem to be made well - a nice material and they look premium. The hook to attach it to your wrist is just ever-so-slightly thicker (and I'm talking just *barely* thicker) than an Alpine loop but that actually makes it very secure where there's little to no chance of it accidentally becoming detached.
The only thing that stood out to me was that the attachment points to the Apple Watch itself had more play than a genuine Apple Watch band. It's not enough play to make me worry about it but you can just tell that the tolerances aren't quite as high as a genuine band.
Even with that I think this is a solid replacement at half the price. Definitely recommended.

A simple Ultra 4K Blu-Ray Player that does the job
on April 17, 2023
Posted by: gwtbike
This is one of those products that does exactly what it’s intended to do and doesn’t try to throw in the kitchen sink. If you’re looking for a no-frills Ultra 4K Blu-ray player and don’t need any streaming capabilities like Netflix, YouTube, etc… then this may be for you.
The image quality is fantastic. The remote is on the smaller size but not too small so it shouldn’t be hard to lose. The buttons are intuitive and the on-screen controls and setup are simple and easy to get around.
For input/output it has an ethernet port and an HDMI out on the back and a USB-A on the front (for other media like photos and music). One thing to note though is that it does not appear that the HDMI port is has ARC capability (meaning that it can communicate with your TV for adjusting volume and other synchronized functions like turning the player off which would also turn the TV off). Another thing to note is that it does not come with an HDMI cable.
My only real complaint would be that there is a slight hum from the player while it’s playing a disc. Almost all the time you won’t be able to hear it over the sound that’s coming out of whatever you’re playing but if it’s completely quiet in the room, you may hear that hum.

Versatile, Great Value, a Couple Quirks
on February 7, 2023

This hair trimmer offers a lot of versatility with attachments for your scalp, face, body, and even nose hair.
I was taken aback at just how many attachments were included for the price. They say it has 18 different attachments/tools but I only counted 15. Maybe they are also counting the charging cable, bag, and cleaning brush but it’s definitely not 18. Even so, it’s plenty of different tools/attachments for any area of your body.
What I like about this particular trimmer is that it has 4 different heads for different levels of coverage from the standard head for things like your face, a wider head for your scalp, a precision head - honestly not sure where to actually use this one ;), and a head for your nose or ears. With each of the wider heads it also has separate attachments for different lengths.
My only complaint though is that they don’t have a 1mm length attachment for use with the wider head which is the length I typically prefer for my scalp so I ended up using the smaller head that has that length attachment. The shortest length attachment with the wide head is 4mm.
Battery life is rated at up to around 3 hours of use which is more than enough even if you were to take it on a couple week trip.
It charges via an included USB A cable but it's not USB A on both ends. The USB A part is just the part that you plug into a wall charger and the end that plugs into the trimmer is proprietary to the device. It’s nice that it’s USB A for convenience (especially for international travel) but it’s a bummer that it doesn’t include a wall charger.
Overall, this is a good, versatile trimmer for the money with a few quirks to be aware of.

Smart, Quiet, Efficient, and Awesome!

You get what you pay for with this product. Just like all Dyson products, it’s an extremely well-thought out, high-quality product and provides amazing cooling, humidifying, and air purification.
I was looking for a solution for my bedroom to stay cool throughout the night but also provide humidification and purification to help with allergies so I could get a better night’s sleep and this has turned out to be a great solution.
What I really like about this unit is that it automatically purify and humidify a room and you can control it either directly with the included remote which in turn displays plenty of information on the functions or modes on the display on the unit itself, but also with the app where you have even more control.
Humidity can be automatically regulated based on your preferences which is nicer than just an on/off switch however you can also choose to turn it entirely off it you’d like. The tank for water is easily removable and it’s supposed to provide up to 36 hours of humidifying.
You can direct airflow either to the front or the back of the unit but there’s also an oscillating function where it can rotate the vents by 90 degrees, however it’s not the entire unit that rotates - it’s actually just the two vents on the sides of the pillars that rotate.
Being that I wanted it in my bedroom especially for use when I sleep, I needed something quiet and this definitely fits the bill. At the medium fan speed I can barely notice it but at higher speeds you can expect some more noise of course but I find it to be similar to something like a white noise machine. One thing to note though is that compared to some of their other fans, it’s substantially larger.
A couple bonuses is that setup takes 5 minutes at most. Just unbox it, snap a couple filters into place, fill it up with water, and it’s ready to go. Along with that, I always appreciate the thought that Dyson puts into their packaging where there is essentially zero plastic that may end up in the landfill. 99.9% of the packaging is made up of cardboard.

Great for a new home purchase
on November 12, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
I recently purchased a new home and during the inspection, mid to high radon levels were found in my basement. They weren’t quite high enough to require immediate radon mitigation but still raised some concern and this product helps me monitor those levels.
On the front of the unit there’s an easy-to-read display that can show your radon level, temperature, as well as air quality and humidity. The display is pretty cool where they use an ePaper-like display akin to something like an Amazon Kindle where it has a ton of contrast and I’m sure that makes it more energy efficient as well.
The nice thing about this sensor is that it’s a wifi connected sensor so you can also view your radon levels from the app including your radon level history over time which can be interesting to see the effects of doing such things as simply opening a window to see how radon levels may change. The app is designed very well and I was impressed with how easy it is to find information and everything is presented extremely well. You can also customize settings such as what is shown on the front of the display and also manage notifications for radon levels, humidity, as well as temperature.
It can be powered by either USB or 6 AA batteries and the battery life is supposed to be up to 3 years. It comes with a USB cable it doesn’t come with a wall plug.
For mounting options, you can simply just place it on any flat surface and it has a rubber coating on the bottom to prevent it from slipping around. Additionally, they include two pieces of double-sided tape to mount it to a wall or you can screw it into the wall using a removable back plate.
The price is on the higher side though for this product but it’s also pretty polished including the app experience. I do think it would have been great if they could have included carbon dioxide detection with this model at this price vs the higher priced View Plus that has that feature but it’s $100 more (which also has Alexa and Google integration).
Overall, quite pleased with this product and the information it delivers.

Portable, Durable, Delivers a lot of Sound!
on November 10, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
This speaker is a great option for someone who wants a less expensive entry point into the SONOS ecosystem or a great way of expanding your SONOS system with a portable solution. Its basically the exact same speaker as the slightly more expensive ROAM but lacks a microphone for voice assistants.
Sound quality is very good on SONOS products and the ROAM SL is no different where its very clear and crisp with all types of music from rock to hip hop to electronica. The sound signature out of the box is not overly bass heavy nor does it deliver an excessive about of treble however I found the vocals with all types of music to be quite pronounced. You can adjust the sound signature with a basic EQ (just bass and treble) to get something more to your liking. With increasing the low-end, the bass response is OK but can be a little muddled with deep lows, so if you’re looking for a “bumping” speaker you may want to consider something different.
The amount of sound this can produce though is pretty amazing where it was easily able to fill both my kitchen and living room with clear and crisp sound at higher volumes. Another thing that’s amazing about this speaker is although the speaker points in just one direction, there’s a surprising amount of sound that can be heard even from the back of the speaker if it were facing away from you. So you could certainly put this in the center of a room to have sound in all directions.
The build quality is top notch just like all SONOS products and this speaker is solid all the way around. It lacks any sort of rubber/silicone bumpers though so it’s not something that can just be thrown around but seems like it will hold up well over time. It has an IPx7 water resistant rating and an IP6x dust resistance rating so it can certainly be used around the pool without worrying or even a camping trip.
One thing I really like about this speaker is that it comes with a nice, long charging cable (46 inches) which is something you don’t see too often so you’ll have some flexibility there in terms of listening while charging.
You can certainly find other bluetooth speakers in this price range that can produce louder sound as well as equivalent sounding speakers for a little less money, however what makes this speaker great of course is the SONOS integration where the speaker can be linked with the SONOS app which will allow it to be accessed from your home network. The setup process is a little more involved than a typical bluetooth speaker but it should just take about 5 minutes within the app. The unfortunate thing though is that it does not appear that you can add this speaker to a Google Home speaker group which is the same as my other SONOS products I own.

A value-packed 4K HDR projector
on October 28, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
To start out with, the marketing for this projector may throw you off. It’s marketed as a gaming projector but this is a great projector that does a very good job at nearly everything, and it has a lot of features for the money.
It packs in a super bright lamp being able to pump out 2800 lumens and even in daylight conditions (with the blinds closed) it produces a surprisingly bright image. The color saturation is quite good and you can pump this up even more with some settings and then it also has support for HDR10 dynamic range content. It also has fantastic contrast where it has a 35,000:1 contrast ratio. In terms of image quality, it’s really quite good.
The gaming portion of the marketing may have something to do with the 120fps frame rate you can get but just note that’s at 1080p. You can however get 60fps at 4K. The 20ms input lag may also be another reason for the gaming appeal.
For the types of media that you may be consuming, this does a stellar job at nearly everything I threw at it but the “gaming features” are in the OK range but at the same time, this projector is a good deal for everything else it packs in.
I quite like the fact that it has WiFi and Android TV built right in so you can access apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube directly from the unit itself making it effectively a “smart tv”. It’s basically an all-in-one unit where the portability allows you to use it in your backyard without having to plug anything else in for those summer outdoor movie nights. It even has bluetooth support for headphones or earbuds if you’d like.
The 10 watt speaker is OK. Better than most speakers on recent flat TVs but certainly not anything amazing when compared to a sounder/subwoofer setup. It’s there as for convenience and does the trick if you don’t have anything better on hand.
It also has a physical lens-shift option where you can place the projector in maybe not the most optimal location like on the floor or your ceiling and still be able to project a properly aligned image on to the screen. It also does have a a side to side adjustment but you can’t fine tune it as much as the vertical adjustment where there are less steps/stops with the side to side angle adjustment. I ended up having the projector to the side of my couch at sitting level and was able to throw the image onto my wall without any issues after a bit of toying around with the keystone adjustments.
Even though it does have 2 HDMI ports, one of those ports is actually already used for the “built-in” Android TV, which I guess you could say is built into the unit, but it literally is a separate device that lives inside the projector. Sort of weird that it’s a separate little device in the projector but I guess that also means it could in theory be upgraded in the future.
My only big gripe with it is that I wish it didn’t look like a printer ;) Maybe appropriate since Epson makes a lot of printers but it still looks a little dated.
For the price, this projector packs in a lot. Maybe not the right marketing as a “gaming projector” but it’s a great value for what it offers as an all-in-one projector that’s suitable for lots of content, not just games.

Refined design and amazing cameras!
on October 27, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
I first want to talk about the design and I’m simply nuts over it. I have the black version (obsidian) and it’s a stunner with super clean lines throughout. The dark grey accents around the edges that blend into the camera bump are also a nice blend of just enough gloss without looking chrome.
The front glass blends right into the rest of the case with a subtle, curved edge where the display spills over the edge just slightly.
The 120Hz display is also fantastic and can get extremely bright. Combine that with the large size and its fantastic for watching videos and reading eBooks is also a great experience.
It also has a combination of both a fingerprint unlock hidden in the display as well as face unlock and this is something that I wish all phones have (looking at you, iPhone). Having the option of using my finger if, let’s say I’m wearing sunglasses that prevent my face from being recognized, or vice versa, using face unlock if I’m wearing gloves, is just super handy.
Google Pixel phones have been hailed as having amazing cameras and photo quality and this new Pixel 7 Pro continues that trend with 3 versatile cameras on the back as well as a quite capable front-facing camera.
The main camera shoots 50, yes 50 megapixel images, and combine that with the f1.85 lens, you can get high quality images from your phone that are actually perfectly appropriate to make larger sized prints.
The 7 Pro also has a 12 megapixel ultra wide lens and it also has a 48 megapixel telephoto camera and gotta say, compared to many other zoom lenses on other flagship phones, the image quality is simply stellar.
Battery life is fantastic for me where I’m easily getting through a full day of use and I tend to be on my phone a lot.
Another reason I like this phone a lot is the flexibility you have with both a physical SIM tray as well as an eSIM. This makes the 7 Pro a really good option if you travel and want to pop in a SIM card from a different country.
Sound quality is one area where I wasn’t as impressed where the sound was OK but just wasn’t quite as full as I would expect out of this size of phone. The volume also seems to be slightly less compared to other phones but that may actually be a good thing because at the loudest setting, the sound can get tinny.
Overall, I’m super impressed with the 7 Pro with very few shortcomings I can think of. For the price, this is hands-down the flagship phone to choose if you want an Android phone.

Tons of value for the money
on October 24, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
For the price, this adventure combo kit is a superb value offering plenty for the money offering great battery life and tons of versatility for lots of different scenarios.
The build quality of everything in this combo seems really good. Everything feels solid and most likely durable over the long term.
You have the ability to record all the way up to 4K/120fps so you can capture some super slow motion shots of whatever you’d be doing like skateboarding or mountain biking. I did however find the image quality to be a little muddy and not as crisp as I would have hoped for. Colors and audio are very good but edges on objects just seemed a bit cloudy.
Battery life is very impressive where I was getting over 2 hours of recording time in 4K. Their claim of 160 hours is recording in 1080p but not sure who exactly still records in that low of a setting these days.
While battery life is impressive, one of my favorite inclusions in this combo is the battery charging case - it’s so darn good! Again, the construction is very solid and isn’t cheap feeling at all. The case can hold 3 batteries with a very secure lid and it charges via USB C.
Another thing I quite like about it are the magnetic mounts. Having used plenty of GoPros in the past, this is a huge plus for me where you can just quickly unclip the camera from the mount without having to unscrew it. For stuff like changing batteries or SD cards, this is super nice to have.
For vertical mounting using the magnetic mount, you have to use the included cage which adds a vertical mount point. Sort of a bummer you have to use the camera cage to get this mounting option but what’s nice is that you can use both orientations with the cage.
The selfie stick…um, holy cow it is WAY longer than you would expect! The selfie stick extends to nearly *5 feet long* from a collapsed length of 9 inches. That blew my mind. That amount of extension helps get the camera far away from you so you can get an even better perspective of you and your environment and just allows for lots of creativity.
While many people may be considering a GoPro Hero 11 vs this Oslo Action 3, yes, the Hero 11 offers more features but is also more expensive. The price of this combo kit is about the same price as just the Hero 11 itself without any accessories. If you’re just considering the price of the cameras themselves, the Action 3 comes in over $100 cheaper than the Hero 11 while still offering plenty of features.
If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, this combo kit is definitely worth a look!

A content-creators all-in one! Tons of value!
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: gwtbike
I’ve been using GoPro cameras all the way back to the Hero 3 - they provide one of the best solutions when it comes to capturing action footage and they’ve just become better and better over the years for action sports. For vlogging, they’ve come out with some great add-ons in recent years including the media mod, LED light, and Volta grip and now, they offer this creator edition which bundles all these accessories which can save upwards of $100.
The Hero 11 itself is far and away the best action camera you can get with 5.3K video, amazing stabilization, as well as super slow-mo 120 fps, but my favorite feature of the new Hero 11 from a content creator perspective is that you can record in a new 8:7 aspect ratio. Now, although you likely won’t be outputting in 8:7, this aspect ratio allows you to capture in this near square format and then you can punch in for either vertical or horizontal formats using the same clip. So you could use horizontal if you wanted to upload to YouTube or Facebook and then re-crop to vertical or square for Instagram. I can’t tell you how useful this feature is for being able to re-use content.
In terms of the accessories, the Volta grip is pretty handy where it serves quadruple duty as a grip, a tripod, an extended battery, as well as a remote control. For me, I value the extended battery and grip functionality a lot and also find the tripod handy, but its not necessarily the most versatile in terms of camera positions where you can’t really tilt the camera. You can rotate and pivot the camera but tilting it from one side to another isn’t possible which is something that would make it better.
The Hero 11 already captures surprisingly good audio but the media mode takes it up another level with very good audio from the built in mic on the mod itself. In addition it also comes with a foam wind cover for reducing noise from wind. And if you want even better audio from an external mic, you can do that too as it has a 3.5mm audio jack for plugging in your favorite external mic. Along with that it has an HDMI port and USB C port And it also has a couple hot shoes built in so you can attach other accessories like the LED light that also comes with this kit.
In terms of value, this kit delivers a lot and if you’re looking to get into content creation whether it be for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and better yet, all of the above, this is a fantastic value for the money.
