A case of open and shut

If you have a lot of traffic in and out of your garage, this "Smart Garage" hub is a great addition to your garage door opener. Not only can you control the opening and closing of the door from your phone, you can also set up alerts so you get notifications when someone else opens or closes the door. It does have voice control integration with Google Home, but not, unfortunately, with Amazon Alexa.
This system comes with a battery powered door sensor to tell when the door is open or closed. It can be mounted with screws or with velcro strips. The main unit then plugs in and mounts on the ceiling near your existing door opener. There aren't any physical connections between it and your opener--it just connects to your wifi network and also learns the codes to act as a remote controller for the opener.
Once you install the MyQ app and set up an account, you can then configure the hub for your wifi network and teach it to work with your door opener. After that fairly quick installation and set up, you can start controlling the door via the MyQ app. If you happen to have a Wink hub like I do for other home automation things, the hub will integrate nicely with that. The Wink app displays an image of a garage door that you can swipe up or down to open and close, which is a pretty handy way to do it. When you close the door, the hub's light flashes and it makes a loud beeping noise for a few seconds before it closes the door.
Overall, I see this as a great addition to my home automation systems. I only wish it worked with Alexa, but maybe that's a feature they'll add before too long.

A quiet, voice controllable robot vacuum
on October 21, 2017

from Stillwater, OK
I know if you're serious about cleaning, you're probably better off spending the same amount of money on a good hand vacuum. But there's just something about a having a robot vacuum that makes cleaning a lot more fun. I've had a few robot vacuums over the years, so I thought I'd try this one out to see if they've improved.
First, I'll mention the one negative about this robot and that's the small, even tiny, dust bin. Unfortunately, that's a limitation on all robotic vacuums that I've seen on the market mainly because of the small size of the robots themselves. Maybe someone will figure out how to automatically empty the dust bin in the future, but until then we're stuck with this. The battery has a run time of about 60 minutes. In our house, even vacuuming every day, the dust bin will fill up much sooner than that.
With that out of the way, there are many things to like about this robot. The most noticeable improvement to me was how much quieter the ION is than other robots I've had. This one could run while people are around and it wouldn't be too annoying. The wifi and Alexa integration features are the other major improvements.
It was very easy to set up on my local wifi after I got the Shark app installed on my phone. Then, I just had to enable the Shark skill in the Amazon app and link the account. From the Shark app, you can set up a cleaning schedule or tell it to start cleaning, pause, or return to the dock. With the Alexa app, you can only ask it to do the three functions clean, pause, or return to dock.
I also thought the ION did much better going over throw rugs and under cabinets without getting stuck. Of course, you can't have any fringe on the rugs or anything else like that or it'll get stuck in the vacuum roller. To avoid other obstacles or to prevent the robot from going into other rooms, they include some rubber strips that you can cut to size and put down as barriers.
If you're looking to have a little fun with cleaning, this is a good robot vacuum to try out. The quieter motor and wifi connectivity make this a robot you might just start using a little more than you expected.

I'm usually leery about buying the latest kitchen gadget only to find we don't use it and it just takes up counter space and collects dust. With this Ninja system, though, I don't think that's going to be the case. We eat a lot of fruit smoothies so this will certainly replace our ordinary blender, but I think it'll give us even more options that'll we use, too.
The "intelli-sense" feature is very cool. The menu screen is blank until you put on an attachment, then it gives you the appropriate buttons for that attachment. But the best feature for us is that once you hit the button you just watch the countdown timer and wait until the final product is done. Gone are the somewhat dangerous days of using the old blender where we had to take the lid off and stir ice chunks down towards the blade so everything got blended. With this system, we push the button and everything comes out smooth when it's done.
It also includes a very nice little recipe book to get you started. My wife started making a grocery list for recipes she wanted to try as she was flipping through the book the first time. Soup with zucchini noodles, hummus, and ice cream are three top recipes we want to try. To make ice cream, you do have to freeze the liquid mixture in ice cube trays ahead of time, blend everything, then let the final product set up in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Still, that's seems like a pretty easy way to make it. We've made the chicken soup with spiraled zucchini noodles so far, and it was delicious! (picture attached)
Another nice feature is the attachment that can be used to make cookie dough. As we've gotten older, mixing cookie dough by hand has become more difficult and we started using the pre-made dough. With this, I think we'll be able to get back to our original family recipes again and let the Ninja do all the work.
I'm extremely pleased with this system so far. It's fun to use and easy to clean up. I think it'll be a great addition to our kitchen tools.

A great 4K TV
on October 14, 2017

I decided to replace my 9-year-old 46" Samsung TV with this TV and so far I've been extremely pleased with it. After adjusting the picture mode to get the colors how I like them, I was perfectly pleased with the picture quality. I think the clear viewing angle may be narrower than on some TVs, but in the room I'm using it that won't be an issue at all. I was also very pleasantly surprised with the speaker quality--it is by far much louder and clearer than the old Samsung.
As far as the installed apps, it has Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and Vudu. There are a few more apps available through their Opera TV platform. However, if you use Hulu, Playstation Vue, etc. then you'll be out of luck and will need to use something like an external Roku. I use PS Vue so I'll be keeping my Roku, but it is nice to have the YouTube and Amazon apps built in with quick access on the remote. One thing I did discover right away was the old HDMI cable I used between the Roku and my old TV did NOT work consistently with the new TV. Fortunately, I had a better cable available and that one worked just fine.
The TV comes with a set of feet if you're going to set it on a table top, but I opted to wall mount it which worked very well. However, the TV is 70lbs and somewhat unwieldy to handle, so it was about the maximum my wife and I could safely get up on the wall. You may want to keep that in mind if you plan to wall mount it.
Overall, I'm very pleased with this TV and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to a friend. I'm loving it so far!

Easy setup, but app problems
on October 5, 2017
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
The cameras were fairly easy to set up and get working on the local network. I let them boot up while I installed the mydlink Lite app on my phone and set up an account. After it was booted up and ready, I scanned the QR code with the app, filled in my wifi information, and connected it to the network. I was able to quickly stream the 720p HD video from it.
I do currently have a support case open with them because I'm not able to stream video when my phone is on cellular. If I'm at a remote location where I can connect to a wifi it works just fine, but not if I switch to cellular. I suspect this is a problem in the app with my particular phone rather than a problem with the cameras. Hopefully they'll find a fix soon.
The wide-angle 120 degree lens does distort things a little, but it's worth it to get the larger viewing area. The quality of the video is very good and the infrared view in the dark is also clear and bright within the 20' or so range. I was pleasantly surprised that it had audio output, too (1-way audio, listen only) though it wasn't high quality. You can also receive push notifications in the app when the camera detects motion or hears a sound above a threshold that you can configure.
While it does seem to use the D-Link cloud when you view the video stream remotely, there isn't a subscription required. It also doesn't seem to have the capability to record motion events in the cloud (like an Arlo, for example) nor can it record locally to an SD card. You can, however, record live video to your phone via the app.
There are a couple of potential negatives to the camera, including there is no way to securely mount them. They appear to be designed to sit unobtrusively on a desk or shelf. If you have curious pets that you're monitoring, you might have to get creative on a way to fasten them in place. Also, the micro USB power cable is very thin and easily chewed into pieces by, for example, a kitten. (Speaking from experience here) The good news is the power is just the standard micro USB connector, so I'm able to get an "armored" USB cable and plug it into a standard USB charger and power the camera. Pets also make the motion and sound notification pretty much useless. But if your house is normally quiet and empty then I could see the notification alert being a very useful feature. I do wish there was a way to schedule times when the alerts are active with other times when they're suppressed, but it doesn't look like that's an option.
For the price, I think these are nice cameras to quickly get set up and monitoring in your house or garage. If you know what it's capabilities and limitations are ahead of time and set your expectations accordingly, I think you'll be happy with these cameras.

Another hit from Bose
on September 25, 2017

This is a compact little speaker with the usual amazing Bose sound quality. With its 6 hour battery life and waterproof rating, it seems like this will be the perfect speaker for around the pool, beach, or taking with you on your bike. I think it would even be ideal for camping since it's small, fairly light, and, again, you don't have to worry if it gets some water on it.
The speaker was super easy to set up and get connected to my phone. There are virtually no instructions with it, but you don't need any once you get the Bose app installed. There's a quick start guide in the app for the first time you connect, then after that you're in business. I don't know anyone with another Micro yet, but the party mode where you can connect two together looks interesting.
If you're looking for a compact, rugged, waterproof speaker with superb sound I don't think you'll be disappointed with this speaker--another awesome product from Bose.

Good for some applications
on September 23, 2017

from Stillwater, OK
I'm a big fan of Bissell vacuums. I've been regularly using a floor sweeper model and a pet hand vac for over a year and really like them. I thought I might be able to use this model as a combination of the two in another area of the house. However, it quickly became apparent it wasn't as good on the floor as the dedicated floor model, and it wasn't as good as the handheld pet model (it has a small roller brush for pet hair) either.
The good news is, though, I found it to be very useful in the garage. The floor brush and suction wasn't quite strong enough to easily clean carpet and throw rugs in the house. Even going over a spot multiple times, there were still bits of debris it couldn't seem to get. The suction may be a little on the weak side, too. But on hard surfaces like tile and concrete in the garage it worked very well. Being able to quickly switch between a hand vac and floor brush turned out to be a great combination for cleaning in the garage.
Here are some things I like about it:
o It's a little lighter than some other Shark/Dyson modes so your arm may not get as tired using it. It's also easier to pick up and hop around obstacles.
o The crevice tool is stored in the handle grip. One of the biggest problem with all vacuums is keeping all the attachments handy for use. For me, the crevice tool is the most common attachment I want to use so this is great!
o The dust bin is easy to empty and also wipe out and keep clean.
o The motor is pretty high-pitched, but overall not terribly noisy.
o The attachments and floor head are very easy to swap out.
o The 22v battery seems to run plenty long for most jobs.
o The LED lights on both the floor head and the hand part illuminate the work area very well
o The instructions are very clear and easy to read
A few things I don't like:
o The on/off switch isn't very easy to activate for some reason and has to be pressed very firmly. I find myself having to push the button more than once to get it to actually power on.
o Suction is a little on the weak side
o Its light weight makes the roller head sometimes hop around on the rug or carpet as you're moving it. I think this contributes to it not cleaning quite as well as some models.
o A hepa filter would have been nice to cut down on allergens

I've been using a cordless sweeper for about a year now and liked it just fine, but thought I'd try this Shark to 1) see if it's better and 2) have another one to use in other areas of the house. The IONFlex is MUCH nicer than my other vacuum and I'm loving it so far. We have a lot of indoor cats so I'm running a quick vacuum daily to round up the stray litter and hair they enjoy spreading around.
It appears to be really well built and seems like it should last a long time. Of course everything is plastic, but it's a heavy duty plastic and doesn't feel cheap like some of them. Some things I'm really liking about this vacuum so far:
o It comes with two Lithium Ion batteries which gives me more than enough run time for my areas.
o The wheels on the roller head are much quieter and smoother on my floor tiles.
o The filtration seems to work perfectly and even litter dust doesn't get through to cause sneezing.
o It's super easy to empty the dust bin.
o It's relatively quiet on the normal suction setting, but does have a higher mode.
o The brush and suction on carpet and throw rugs is very comparable to my full-size floor vacuums.
o It folds into a pretty compact shape for storage.
o The documentation included is short, to the point, clear and easy to read.
o The control buttons are intuitive and easy to access while using it: There's the big power button, but also buttons to switch carpet/tile mode and change the suction power
The few minor downsides:
o The dust bin is very small so you'll need to empty it a lot (but at least that's super easy)
o The 3 attachments it came with are nice, but I haven't figured out how/where I'm going to store them for easy access yet.
o It did not come with the pet attachment shown in the manual (the quick start guide shows only the attachments actually included).
I really like the design of this vacuum. The main unit reminds me of some sort of scifi laser pistol. The air is sucked into the nozzle in the front, drops debris in the dust bin, goes through several filters, then is exhausted through the bottom of the handle grip. It's a cool design and it works really well. If you're looking for a powerful, compact vacuum I think you'll be happy with this Shark.

Didn't see the improvement I expected
on September 9, 2017
Posted by: FlyingC
from Stillwater, OK
I commute about 70 miles to work and some of the areas have weak AT&T coverage, so I thought I'd try this booster. After using it for a couple of weeks, I'm not sure it's really helping in my situation. There are several areas during my drive where my phone shows only 1 bar and I sometimes (but not always) lose calls. Using the booster, I didn't notice any increase in the bars on my phone which I had expected. I didn't lose any calls during my few tests, but then I don't always lose calls without the booster. I did do several data transfer tests with and without the booster and really didn't see any difference in the speeds either. So, that's why I'm left wondering if it's really helping.
The documentation with the booster was clear and easy to follow, and the installation for my testing only took a few minutes. If you plan to permanently install and hide all the cables it would take some extra time. The antenna is externally mounted and magnetic, so that would only be a problem if you have one of the new aluminum body cars. They recommend just running the antenna cable down through the door seals and closing the door on it which did work just fine. However, I'd be a little concerned about the long-term affects of breaking the door seal and getting moisture inside.
The booster and cables can be concealed under a seat and then you just run power from the cigarette lighter and then the wire to wherever you want the cradle. It comes with a magnetic vent mount which worked pretty well. The cradle expands vertically and clamps down on your phone, which also worked very well. It easily and snugly fit my Note 5 in its case. I tested my phone in the cradle without the case, too, just to see if that made any difference with the signal but it didn't.
I'm sure it won't hurt to have the booster, but I'm still a little puzzled why I didn't see more signal bars or improved data speeds with it.

Great sound, light weight
on August 10, 2017

I've used an expensive wireless headset for quite a few years playing some PC games, but mostly PS3/PS4 games. I really like the fabric covering on these (it's a lot cooler...temperature that is) and the whole headset is much lighter weight. While lighter, they are still quality headphones that sound great and have a mic that works well.
With my old "wireless" headphones, it still required a short cable from them to the PS4 controller so I could use chat. They also required a USB-connected transmitter which was always a slight nuisance when moving the console around. Plus, I had to keep them charged up. But with these new headphones, I just have the one cable from them to the controller with nothing additional on the console and no battery to keep charged. I'll be using these from now on.
Some other niceties include an extra pair of microfiber ear pads if you don't like the cloth ones, a small bag for the cables, and a larger bag for everything including the headphones. These are nice to use even if you aren't taking them anywhere just to keep the dust off and the cats away from the cables. Overall, I'm very pleased with these headphones and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to any of my gaming buddies.

How much range of motion detection does this camera have?

The specs list it at 90'. That may be under ideal conditions, though. In my situation, I think it was more like 75-80'.

Can it be used in regular floors?

Not sure what regular floors are, but maybe hardwood flooring? This works well on that--it has good suction and the wheels are large enough and slightly cushioned so they roll smoothly and quietly on the hardwood. Also works great on carpets and throw rugs. On some of the smaller rugs I reduce the suction a little (thicker carpet setting) to keep from pulling them up.

Fragrances including Fabreez are filled with chemical compounds that are highly allergenic. Is it possible to get Bissell off the shelf without fragrances allergens in the filters? Defeats the purpose of buying this for allergy sufferers!

While other models came with the optional extra Febreze filter, this one just came out of the box with a regular filter with no scent.

Meet the Logitech Pebble i345. It takes your iPad to higher places with a level of precision and control you can’t get with a tablet alone. Use it to click, scroll, and control your workflow like never before. It’s small, portable, and comfortable—so you can keep exploring, wherever you go.

What difference is there between the Pebble M350, M355, and the most recent i345. As I understand the M350 is the first version, the M355 is the second version, both are compatible with various operating systems including IPadOS, and the i345 only iPadOS

Actually, the i345 is compatible with any device that has BLE (bluetooth low energy) and not just IOS things. I've used the i345 with a PC and also a Chromebook. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the i345 and the M350/M355 is that the i345 doesn't have the USB dongle to use on devices that don't have bluetooth.

I believe it is 6 feet long.

hmm.. NO PoE ? .. does this run on regular old school BnC connections ??? if soooooo..... i have old lorex 720p cameras on BnC right now ... wonder if i can just order cameras and swap out ??? thanks for the help for whoever answers these questions

Yes, it uses BNC connectors so your old cameras should work. However, if you try to use the older cable with the new 4K cameras you'll likely have a very degraded picture if it works at all. I tried it with mine and I could see part of the image, but the bottom half was messed up. When I ran the new cable that came with the 4K camera system, the picture worked perfectly.

Will Best Buy install the system and will it work with existing cameras?

Not sure if Best Buy will install, but you could certainly give them a call. As far as working with existing cameras, I was able to swap out my Swann DVR with this one and still use the old Swann cameras with it. As long as your cameras have a BNC-type connector, you should be okay.

Does this camera have tots of false positive motion alarms? Does it have thermal sensing for motion ?

I haven't noticed any false positives, though it IS very sensitive. So bugs flying near it (day or night) definitely trigger it to record. I think you can adjust the sensitivity, though I haven't played with it. You can also "blank" out areas of the camera view to ignore motion. For example, trees in view of one of my cameras move back and forth when it's windy and constantly trigger the motion. I was able to select the trees in the view and ignore motion there to solve that. I do not believe it uses thermal sensing for motion, but rather changes in the image it sees.
