Wonderfully Droll Film

This is a wonderfully droll film from the comically insane mind of Harold Ramis and featuring a great performance by Bill Murray. Both have made excellent films together and this is one of the real gems of their collaboration. Now in HD on Blu-ray, the film looks great and is well worth another visit, whenever you feel your own day is stuck in an infinite loop.

At Last DC Hits Its Stride

It has taken some time for the DC film franchise to regain its footing after the completion of the excellent Christopher Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, and after several missteps it seems that, with Wonder Woman, DC has regained its stride.
This is a very well done film, striking a good balance between drama and comedy (something the Marvel franchise has done exceedingly well but which has eluded the DC until now) giving us a film that is not only fun, but also well thought out in its message.
For me, the two best scenes are when Diana confronts the Generals at their conference, castigating them for their callous disregard of their soldiers and the costs those soldiers pay for their leader's mistakes. "Where I come from the Generals lead their soldiers on the battlefield, not sitting behind a desk." She is absolutely right and her speech garnered applause from the audience I saw the film with.
This scene is followed, in short order, by one of Diana leading the way, by herself, into No Man's Land in an attempt to save a small village behind enemy lines. It is a well written scene, beautifully short and perfectly choreographed. This scene alone is worth the price of admission.
The film looks great in HD on Blu-ray, and the sound is equally impressive.
All in all this is an excellent film, well worth adding to your home video library.

Nothing Pleases Quite Like The Classics

With a new Mummy arriving in theaters it is a good time to revisit the classics and just in time Universal has released the Complete Mummy Legacy in HD on Blu-ray.
The set contains the original film with Boris Karloff and 5 sequels from the 1940's and early 50's. Not surprisingly, the first film, with Karloff, is the best of the set. What does surprise is just how short some of these 'feature' films are. While the original Mummy is a little short of 2 hours, a couple of the sequels are just over 1-hour in length. Indeed, the final film of the set, Abbott & Costello Meet The Mummy, is the longest film of the set clocking in at 117 minutes. If you are an Abbott & Costello fan you will enjoy this romp while others will likely find it a tad bit silly.
That being said, it is great to have all of these films together in one set and in great looking HD. There are also plenty of extras for those interested in the cinematic history of the Universal Monsters.
This is a set worth adding to your video library.

Based upon a comic book that was considered risky at best, there was some trepidation when Disney / Marvel announced Guardians Of The Galaxy as their next feature film project. Some even thought this might signal the start of a downward spiral for the Marvel film franchise.
And then the film opened, and everyone was taken by surprise.
Marvel films have long been known for a sly comic touch that helps to accent the action of their various superhero movies, but here the comedy takes center stage, and it works beautifully. Taking us by surprise, with a nod and a wink, the story of these off beat heroes is both amusing and engaging. Likewise the music is an integral part of the whole and works well at setting the mood for the wry comedy. If you have not seen Volume 1 then you are in for a treat.
The video quality in HD is excellent as is the sound. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.1 will be a welcome addition to your video collection.

Star Wars Returns to Form

It is always tough when a franchise changes leadership. In attempting to capture the essence of the original there is a risk of being either to slavish, or of innovating too much and in either case missing the point completely. Thankfully, Rogue One walks that razor's edge with skill and succeeds in engendering the spirit of the original Star Wars films.
Somewhat darker than the original Trilogy, the story here is how the plans for the Death Star came into the hands of Princess Leia. Suffice to say, it was not easy, and much blood was spilt.
Some may be disappointed, just as Episode VII The Force Awakens did not please everyone, however I believe most fans will enjoy this film. Cast and crew have done an admirable job of bringing Star Wars back to form.
Video quality on this Blu-ray disc is excellent as is the audio.
So crank up the volume on your surround sound system, pop some corn, and enjoy another adventure in that galaxy far, far away.

Many have called Citizen Kane the greatest American movie of all time, and with good reason. This is a tremendous film that continues to delight and amaze more than 75 years after its premiere. Orson Wells showed an incredible command of the medium and with the able support of his producer, John Houseman, Wells was able to make a film that displayed to best effect his prodigious talents as both actor and director.
This release, in HD on Blu-ray, looks great, with excellent audio quality.
Citizen Kane is a worthy addition to any collection, and every cineaste should consider finding room on their self for this piece of cinema art.

Welcome to the Brave New Digital World

Even though Apple is marching boldly into the All Digital World, there are many of us who still have and use disc based programs. So it was then that when we purchased a new iMac we quickly discovered we really do need an optical drive.
We tried a very highly rated drive from another manufacturer, but it was a disappointment -- loud and not 'plug & play' friendly. So we returned it in favor off the more expensive Apply Super Drive, and discovered that, yes indeed, you really do get what you pay for.
The Apple drive was simply to set-up being truly plug-&-play friendly, and we were operational within minutes. The unit itself is quiet and takes up very little real estate on your desk.
If you still want to play DVD's, burn CD's of your iTunes play list, or use disc based software (Games!) this unit is the one to get.

It Is That Time of Year...

This program has become indispensable, however, finding it in physical disc form, rather than as a digital download, can be a real challenge. Call me old fashioned, but I do much prefer having the physical media. Of course, time is working against me on this. Otherwise the program worked flawlessly and we were able to complete our taxes quickly. Now we simply wait for our, admittedly, very modest refund.

Did Not Work

Unfortunately, I can not give this a 5-Star review as it never worked properly. This was due to the fact that the package, although labeled as Mac compatible, was missing the Mac OS disc to allow it to function with our iMac. That problem was only compounded when we returned it to the BB store and they did not have a unit with the correct disc. Ah well.
Otherwise the unit itself was slim, easy to plug in and very quiet while operating. IF you need an optical drive and are using a Windows PC, this drive might be perfect for you.
