Epica-classical music plus heavy metal.

Epica are one of the top bands in the world today to mix classical music with heavy metal and thrash. Don't write them off as cheesy because of this. Simone Simons is a classically trained opera singer and adds so much beauty and complexity to this band with her voice alone. The other musicians are in top form as well and can really ride the riffs along with her exquisite voice. The songs are complex, with multi-arrangements and layers in every song that will keep you listening to try to figure it all out! I highly recommend any album this band has put out. Secondly, if you are into Eastern philosophy and trying to improve your life through alternative ways of thinking and living this band is for you!

7 Seconds have been around forever and are one of the progenitors of the positive punk hardcore movement. If you haven't heard them you should! Punk with a positive message. Kevin Seconds, the singer also has many solo albums out as well.

Its Mart Friedman, what else can you say? Incredibly talented guitarist. In the vein of Paul Gilbert but much heavier!

This movie was great and well done. But, I must say that the soundtrack steals the show. A wonderful set of compositions from James Newton Howard. Powerful stirring music to get lost in!

We know King Buzzo from his many years rocking out on electric guitar in the Melvins. Now he as released this album of just him and his guitar singing acoustic tunes. This is interesting. He still plays heavy acoustically. Don't expect light strumming with ballads. That you will not find here. A good album, but I still like him best in the Melvins.

This album is masterminded by the multi-talented Chris Black, a mainstay name in the underground metal community. He not only has this band High Spirits but also another band by the name of Dawnbringer. Both bands have several albums out that were released over the past few years and both bands wave the old school traditional heavy metal banner with pride. High Spirits are a little more on the rock side and Dawnbringer is more straight Heavy Metal. Everything by both bands is amazing and you should look into their catalogs.

Old School thrash/Death metal at its primal best!

Nunslaughter is a thrash/death metal hybrid old school band. No frills, no gimmicks, just straightforward death and thrash with basic anti religion, anti establishment lyrics. The music rocks for sure and you will find yourself banging your head after a few seconds of pressing play!

Ken mode is a Candian band that plays a mix of punk, hardcore and metal music that basically for the lack of a better word, rocks!!! Probably the catchiest of their releases recorded by the great Matt Bayles.

Great for an inside view of a historical studio

Foo Fighters frontmen David Grohl has made this informative, powerful film about the history of music recording in the US based around the now defunct Sound City Studios. It is based on the general belief by Grohl that live tape recording is superior to digital recording that is soncommon in the music world today. He doesn't completely disregard the digital recording process, but it is obvious he would rather prefer the live tape recording. Take it for what it is. This documentary has interviews with many artists and bands about their recording at this studio through the years as well as the engineers and producers who worked there. Its powerful and gives one something to think about and may cause a few people to actually debate this whole digital/tape recording issue.
