Getting what you pay for
on July 20, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
It's an expensive chair, but it well made, versatile, and comfortable for a range of body types. It comes in around 70 pounds, so getting to its location may take planning for some. It came in a study box with cutouts on the side for lifting. Once opened, there are three pieces to assemble. The bottom, heavy duty plastic with the wheels already installed, the piston for raising and lowering the seat, and the entire seat all assembled. The piston can only go in one way, so it’s easy to put together. I found it easiest to put the piston in the base, and then put it on its side and side the top of the piston into the chair, and then right the whole unit. With two people maybe one can guide the top onto the piston. Once that is done you have the guide to show you how to work the chair. It has a 12-year warranty and is rated for 400lbs.
The wheels glided easily over hardwood and some low shag carpet. The seat is wide and comfortable. All the controls are on the right side of the chair just under the seat. The depth can be moved back and forth by the knob on the side for leg/thigh support. The lumbar support is done by two tabs on the seat back. The chair can be reclined and stopped in various positions, and the effort to move the back can be adjusted too. Each arm has a button to raise and lower it, the tops slide in and out, and can be angled as needed. Height is adjusted by pulling up on a lever and removing or adding weight to get the desired position. This all gives you easy to control and adjust the chair to your needs. So, one person can adjust as they need and the next can readjust quickly.
It's not just about comfort for one, but I found it’s easy for others to quickly get comfortable as different body types use the chair. It has all day comfort as good as any work chair I’ve used. Want a quick change, just select a knob, change, and your set again. The fabric looked nice and feels good. This should last longer than cheaper chairs that only go a few years with constant use.

Solid compact print
on July 5, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
This Canon all in one is a good printer that makes great photos. At just 17.3x13.8x7.5 in and 17.5 lbs, it doesn’t take up much space for a full letter size printer. It has a fold out ADF on the top that holds up to 20 sheets and you can lift up the top to access the flat bed. A vertical paper holder in the back and a paper tray on the bottom, each can hold up to ~100 sheets depending on the paper used. It doesn’t hold a lot of paper, but it’s good for a compact printer. On the front is a 4.3” color screen for setting up and controlling the device. The scanning is up to 1200 x 2400 dpi, and it has an integrated fax. It has multiple wireless (Wi-Fi, BT, 2.4 GHz only, etc) and wired (usb, ethernet) connections from individual to LAN use. The printer uses 5 different ink cartridges, a full set of the XL versions are ~$70 MSRP. The ink is easy to install, just unwrap and insert into the ink tray under the top of the printer
I setup mine with an Ethernet cable. Plugged in, and on the setup screen gave it an IP address. From there you can go to the Canon page and download the software. Once obtained, it downloads the full set of features. This enables all of the printer features to be used from your PC, MAC, or Chrome OS device. Once connected to the internet, you can decide if you want to connect to online print services. Updates can also be obtained online. The software will allow you to send scans directly to your device. Ink levels can be seen on your PC or the printer touch screen. The touchscreen is large enough for sections to be selected easily. The device allows to adjust printing scanning, faxing or copying as needed. I had no issues setting up the printer. Access to all connections, and web interfaces is accessible through the touch screen. The utilities on a PC, MAC, or Chrome OS allow you to access and change various settings throughout the printer. Fax setup was straight forward and worked fine on my land line connection.
The items from the printer, whether documents or photos look nice. On regular paper documents look crisp. Photos on regular paper do look well and would be great for projects. Using photo paper makes the photos really look their best. Borderless full-page prints come out fantastic. There is an eco-setting to make the ink last longer. It prints on the slow side, but the results are worth it.
This compact all in one is a nice printer for the price point. Does everything you need in color in a tight space. The large touchscreen, multitude of connections, and options to print make it very versatile. You can set it up for auto turn on and off as needed. Interfacing with the printer through the printer screen or through a device was easy to setup and use.

Great smart thermostat without unwanted extras
on May 30, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
I had been using an Ecobee 3 for years and had a chance to upgrade to this newer version. The screen is a fraction bigger, but basically the same. But, it displays more information than the Ecobee 3 on screen. Before you get this, look at the wires you currently have going to your thermostat. Go to the Ecobee site, https://www.ecobee.com/en-us/compatibility/thermostat/ and check to see if your system is compatible with it. This model does not have as many options as the premium and my old Ecobee 3, but works for my application. The box includes the thermostat, a mounting plate (with a bubble level in it, a backplate, stickers to mark your wires, and a PEK device if needed. It does not include extras like an additional sensor, so if you just want a thermostat this is the one to get. In going from my old Ecobee to the new one, you can’t transfer your old settings, you have to start over.
I didn’t need the PEK, so I can’t speak to it. After opening the box and turning of the Circuit Breaker (CB) on my system, I removed the wires from my old Ecobee 3 and put them in the same slots on the Ecobee Enhanced. Easy to just push in. Put the CB back on and the Ecobee powered up. After short boot up sequence it ready to go. One big plus is the device can now connect at 2.4 and 5.0 GHz frequencies. I put in the information, and my Ecobee account and was connected. It then asks some questions about the setup of your home system, do you have a humidifier, how many stages etc. Once complete the device will calibrate, but you’re basically set. If you have an account with Ecobee the device will show up on the website and on the Ecobee app. Once it shows up, you can modify and adjust as needed there or on the device itself. I had several room temperature sensors, and it was easy to add them to the new Ecobee. Just take a picture of the QR code inside each sensor with the app, and they connect to the device. I only used SmartSensors for temperature. You can add devices to make it a security system, but it may require a subscription.
It starts with a basic setup, sleep, home, and away. You can adjust them or add more events. Set the high and low temps you want and how long you want temporary changes to last. There is a vacation setting too. You can send information to your HVAC company. It has eco+ and follow me. Both work great. Using the main unit alone or with additional temperature sensors or other units, the system will adjust to keep all areas of your house as you want, or just where you are. The feature worked with no issues. However, in activating them it may cause your system to run longer. I have one furnace that heats the house. Between the top and bottom floors, and how the sun hits some rooms, the room temperatures can be quite different. With eco+ on for instance, the system collected the information from sensors in the room and set the temperature. It felt nice and was great. However, it also means the furnace runs more to keep everything where you want it. Not as much as regular thermostat might, but more than normal for an Ecobee. You situation will vary but, be aware of what you are asking the system to do for your comfort. In a small place this may not be a big deal compared to a larger home. The extra sensors show right up on the app or website and can be monitored whether you use them in comfort settings for your system or not. I use them mainly to just monitor temperatures in certain rooms.
After a month with enough data collected you can get monthly reports on how your system is doing compared to similar homes. Temps in the home, time your unit was one, cooling, heating etc. Data on everything the system is doing. On the website you can export the data to what you want with it. This unit is a step up from my old one. The unit will also show local weather and will display the time briefly when it detects someone nearby. Some more options and features than my old Ecobee. Compared to a non-smart thermostat, Ecobees are a giant leap forward. This Ecobee will also integrate with Google, Apple, and other smart feature providers. If you don’t need BT, calling through your thermostat, and other features, this is a great Thermostat to get. Although having it connected makes it easier to use, you don’t have to take advantage of what it offers. Make sure you check the compatibility page first, so you know it will work with your unit.

Blazing Fast External Storage
on May 26, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
A small, rugged, and fast external storage device. Fits in the palm of your hand, lightweight, and has a rubberized coating. Comes with a USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cables. The device has one USB-C port, and a status light. The Blue is a nice deep color. In the pictures attach are speed from connecting to a USB3-C Gen2, USB3-C Gen 1, USB3-A, and USB 2 ports. On a USB3 Gen 2, 2.4GB took ~5 seconds, about 600MB per second. USB3 Gen 1 took ~10 seconds for the same file. Tried it with multiple files and it never got hot. Samsung Magician recognized the device and provided the speeds with various connections. It also comes with Samsung Portable SSD Software which allows you to password protect the drive. No password, no access, so your protected on the go with AES 256-bit hardware encryption. Small, fast, and reliable. 1TB is a good size for carrying a lot of files, or music, whatever you need. Samsung SSD's have are usually reliable and with no moving parts, I'd expect this to last a while, even with drops and getting water on it as it's IP65 rated.

Good light fast laptop
on May 14, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
This is great smaller laptop for getting work and schoolwork done. The blue color is nice, and the laptop is light. Is has USB-A, USB-C (2), Micro SD, a 3.5mm jack, and HDMI connections for getting connected. The USB-C ports are the right side of the computer. I hooked up the included 65w charger through a small usb dongle to get wired Ethernet and has no issues with power or the extra ports working. Wireless connected with no issues at full AX speed.
The laptop is great for office, so you can use it for most work and school applications. With only 8GB RAM, it doesn't leave room for VMs or other large programs to use a lot of RAM. The memory cannot be upgraded, whatever you buy the machine with it what you get. The M.2 SSD is upgradable.
It comes with a 256GB M.2 stick. Taking off the bottom of the laptop is not hard. Remove the visible screws and 2 more under the rear pads. Then pry open from the hinges around to the front and it comes right off. The M.2 slot is a full 2280 in length, but I wouldn’t put anything with a heatsink on it as it probably won't fit. The picture shows the insides, the M.2 slot is under the silver cover in the back middle/left of the board. The external screws are hex, and the internal screws to remove the M.2 cover are Philips. After installing Samsung Migration, and using a USB M.2 device, I transferred everything to a 1TB drive with no issues (make sure encryption is off). The stick slid right in. Closing the cover was easy. The drive takes advantage of the slot, and it gets tops transfer speeds.
The screen is outstanding. Colors really pop and at 2.8K, you can put a lot on the screen. The video memory is shared, there is not a discrete card, so it can do older or more basic games with no issues. Another nice feature is the touchpad. It doubles as a numpad. Click the upper right of the touchpad and a numpad is displayed on it. This makes entering in numbers and IP address a lot easier. Its responsive and once done, you tap the corner again the numpad goes away. This is nice way to add a numpad without increasing the laptop width. Overall, with the i5 12gen Intel processor it's very responsive, programs come up quick and runs through tasks without the computer getting too hot. The built-in audio and camera are good and perform well for listening and doing video calls. Hooking up a second monitor via HDMI was simple and works fine. The laptop comes with Windows 11 Home standard. No real bloatware, anti-virus etc, just Asus’s care program, so nothing to remove. Windows 11 was responsive and operated well.
This is a good mid-level laptop, no touch screen or extras, which helps to cut down on the price. The amount of non-upgradable memory is only a concern only if you are going to do more intensive work above office, browsing, calls etc. Upgrading the SSD is easy and lets you have a lot more space to store items or add programs. The screen really shines and makes everything look great. For the price it has a lot of features and superb screen to do you work or schoolwork on.

Greatg for larger hands
on January 17, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
from Baltimore, MD
The M650 L is a larger version of the M650. There is also a left-handed version. The L is for size, not handedness. It is one centimeter, just short of ½” longer than the regular M650. It has a scroll wheel/middle click, left and right click, as well as two thumb buttons. The top is smooth, and the sides are courser allowing for a good grip on the mouse. The scroll wheel moves freely. It feels good in since it's not compact, your figures and lay on the end of the mouse comfortably. It runs on one AA battery.
It can be connected by Bluetooth to one computer or connect by the included Bolt receiver. Some things to note on the mouse and connections. It only connects with Bolt, not the unifying receivers. For software, if desired, it requires the newer Logi Options+. Depending on other Logitech devices you have, they may not be able to link to the new Bolt receiver, you'll need to use Bluetooth or another USB port to connect to the same computer. The mouse has a slot in the battery compartment to hold the receiver.
The Logi Options+ lets you customize the mouse. You can change what the buttons do and the mouse speed. It goes up to 4000DPI. The software is intuitive and easy to setup and use. Responsiveness is like a wired mouse. Overall, the mouse is great, especially for larger hands. You can lay your fingers out and on the buttons. It’s responsive and easy to setup.

Great but big
on January 12, 2022
Posted by: grimmace
from Baltimore, MD
I used this in a PC. Easy to install. But due to the larger size of the heat sink it limits it installation. Some laptops and onboard motherboard M.2 slots are too small. M.2 slot under heat sinks on my laptop or PC motherboard cannot fit this. I only found a motherboard with a vertical M.2 drive that could accept it with no issues. It looks nice and helps cool. As easy to install as any other M.2. I put it on a PCI ex M.2 card.
Performance, see attached results from the Samsung Magician software. Compares M.2 Evo 960, 970, and the 980 Pro, all 1TB. As soon as it connected there was a firmware update from Samsung Magician. After a reboot it was ready to go. The 980 Pro is faster than other drives I have. I used this on a PCI Ex gen 3 slot. The card got full 4x lanes. However, it needs a gen 4 connection to experience it's full potential. So, it's ready for PCI Ex gen 4 boards. Even on Gen 3 it's faster, but can do more. The attached picture are the results of 960, 970, and 980 Pro M.2s. All on the same Motherboard with full 4x lanes to each.
Great drive, the heat sink limits installation is the only drawback. Make sure you have room for it. On board M.2 slots they have heatsinks already built in may not fit it. Having a PCI Ex 4 connection will get you better results, but even on PCI Ex 3 it's faster.

Solid Basic 27" Monitor
on December 13, 2021
Posted by: grimmace
from Baltimore, MD
A good solid monitor for whatever you want to do. Gaming to office work it will meet your needs. The colors are good and it's responsive. The bezel is thin and it's lightweight. A basic stand with tilt keeps it at a good height. It also has screws holes for a 100x100 VESA mount. To assemble and attach the stand you'll need a screwdriver. One screw to assemble the stand and 4 to attach it to the monitor. Quick and easy to setup.
It has one HDMI and one VGA connection. VGA is pretty much gone unless you're connecting to servers. You can get adapters if you want to hook it up to two different devices via HDMI. The user interface is not intuitive. The power button on the back is power when you push in and a ring controls left, right, up and down. With no “enter” to hit, the left, right, up and down are your select and exit buttons. It’s not clear which to do what at first. Entering menus and backing out is not as easy as it should be, but you won’t go into it often. I plugged it and connected it to a laptop with no issues. You can get up to 75Hz refresh rate. It has no speakers.
The main issue is it’s a bigger screen for a lower price. 27” is good enough for viewing most items at 1080p. The colors are good, and it has HDMI. You can put two windows side by side. The thin bezel means it won’t take up more space than needed. The stand isn’t big and with a VESA mount system you can always swap out the stand for something else.

GReat for bigger hands and fast.
on December 10, 2021
Posted by: grimmace
from Baltimore, MD
This is as solid mouse from Logitech. I was using a G305 on laptop and have replaced it with this G303. The main differences/improvements are the shape, weight, and Hero sensor. It feels and is lighter than the G305, and glides well. It has an internal rechargeable battery that should be good for 145 hrs. mine came at 50% and took about an hour to fully charge. It uses a USB-C cable to recharge. The receiver can be stored in a slide out chamber in the back of the mouse.
The shape is nice. A little broader than the G305. The top is also flatter, so you palm can fit comfortably. There is also a slight bend for your thumb on the left side. With the crook in the joint of your thumb, your hand is placed forward on the mouse. The side buttons are also in easy reach for your thumb. Being forward on the mouse puts your fingers at the ends of the left and right buttons. Putting them where you should have them. Being a little broader also supports the palm of your hand better. With the sensor going up to 25K a small twitch will instantly move you.
Plugging into my laptop, G-Hub picked it up right away. From G-Hub it's easy to adjust the DPI settings. You get 4 presets to adjust. The button behind the scroll wheel cycles you through them. You can also change the button functions if you want. For bigger hands this mouse is great. Comfortable, rechargeable, lightweight, and fast. Has the main mouse buttons you want and quick reaction times. Wireless seemed just like wired. In the pictures, the G303 is on the left and a G305 on the right.

Good small power charger
on November 24, 2021
Posted by: grimmace
from Baltimore, MD
Anker usually makes good chargers, this is no exception. Not to big, and it it does fast charging. On both a Samsung tablet and phone the Fast charging indication came on and it charged at the higher rate. You can do two mobile devices at once. I connected it to a 65W laptop and nothing else, and although I got the slow charging notification, it did charge the laptop. Worked fine with most of my USB-C cables. Good build, no issues with it.

Just average router for now
By grimmace from MD
This is a high end router from Linksys. Hooking it up was easy, and starting it was not a problem.
Positives-
8 ports – lots of ports to plug directly into the router.
Interface and setup are easy
Dual band worked fine
Multiple VPN ports can be designated
Neutral-
The have icons to attach to your network devices. They have the Wemo series of products and some other generic icons, but not much else if it matters to people.
Negative-
No aggregate ports
No bandwidth monitor (couldn’t find it in the regular Linksys screen location or any other pages)
Have to use an app to connect with mobile devices
Keeps trying to get you sign up for Linksys smart-fi
Requires adobe flash for the speed test. Flash is going away.
Wireless range was not as great as other similar range routers.
All of the comments are from the original firmware shipped with the router. The issue is, for a top end router with the matching price, it needs to have features others in the range do. Firmware upgrades should be able to fix many of these issues I think, but they should be there from the start. So, average overall since it has room to improve and should.

I did play with the position of the antennas, The link you provided has very basic information. I tried the antennas at all angles, mostly 45 and 90. The range was still not as great as other routers in this price range.

Unleash the power of the Samsung 980 PRO with Heatsink for next-level computing. With a PCIe® 4.0 NVMe™ interface, get up to 2x the data transfer rate of PCIe® 3.0¹ while remaining compatible with PCIe® 3.0. ¹Results are based on a comparison with Samsung PCIe® 3.0 NVMe SSDs and SATA SSDs.

Anyone know if the heatsink is easily removable in case I want to use it in a gaming laptop? I am not sure this will fit my laptop 2nd bay, Asus ROG m16 SSD slot. Thanks!

I tried to get it off. It has 5 small screws. I tried all of my small head. Philips, star, hex, etc, I couldn't anything that fit right to remove the screws. It's a big heat sink. If on a MB or laptop that has a heat sink built in to a cover it's not going to fit. If it doesn't have a heatsink cover built in it might fit, but measure or something first. It's a really big heat sink.

On the 2nd M.2 slot (for expansion), how do I access it? Where is it? Where is the schematic of the laptop? What type of driver do I need for the screws? Please confirm the primary M.2 contains the operating system and is rated at Gen 4 speeds.

Yo have to remove the motherboard and flip it over. The memory and 2nd M.2 slot are there. The M.2 slot has a screw in it already. Cover screws are hex and internal Philips. I found no schematics. The M.2 that comes with it is a OEM Samsung and has the OS on it. I added the 2nd M.2 and upped the memory to 32GB. See a better explanation on the process in the review I did for it.

I currently stream directly from my LG OLED. Is it possible to do this and still have the audio synced? If not how do I accomplish this without another box of some sorts?

From the manual.
Audio sync
With the audio sync function, you can synchronize audio and
video to make sure that no delay is heard from your video content.
1. On the remote control, press and hold for more than three
seconds and then, press +.
2. Within five seconds, press + or - on the remote control to
adjust the audio delay and match with video.
→ The audio sync timing is displayed.
NOTES:
− If no action is taken within five seconds, you will exit the audio sync
mode.

I connected jbl 9.1 soundbar with my tv through hdmi arc and playing atoms content through Netflix but on soundbar it’s showing Dolby surround not atoms. How to get atoms ??

Your TV has to have an eARC HDMI port for Atmos or DTS:X formats to be passed. So, an HDMI 2.1 port. Without that you won't get Atmos from a TV. If you have a steaming device you can connect to the HDMI port on the soundbar, you'll get Atmos through it.

None of your microwaves show a wattage. How are we supposed to know?

On the microwave page under specifications and electrical specifications, it says 700 watts and has a power consumption of 1100 watts.. Same as most .7 cu ft microwaves.

Does the Sony 1000XM3 InEar have it's own volume control? I need to amplify my listening, while my wife listens to the normal TV volume. I have a pair of the Sony 1000XM# over the Ear Head Phones and of course they DO have volume control. Thanks.

No. Volume is controlled by the device outputting sound. There is no volume control on the earbuds.
