Great Basic BUT GOOD Home Theater Setup
on June 11, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Lets start with delivery... This set-up is BIG. The box is just under 65 pounds. I'm not surprised given that is includes a large sub-woofer and a full multi-channel receiver, in addition to a nice center speaker and 4 solid front R/L and rear R/L speaker set.
I hauled the box from garage to stairs and then got it downstairs with no problem. That said, if you have ANY doubt if you are hauling it a decent distance or up/down stairs, I might suggest to open the main box and separately move the Denon receiver box individually first, and then after moving it, remove the heavier Polk speaker box. Better safe than sorry and just my $00.02.
As mentioned, the first box out is the Denon AVR-S540BT. Included in that box was the receiver, remote (with battery), AM and FM antenna's tuning speaker and user manual. I'll get to the setup later.
Before removing the Polk box, important to note they include probably close to 100' of nice 16 gauge cable, a decent HDMI cable and a single lead for connecting Sub-woofer to the receiver. Nice inclusion, Polk/Denon.
Next up, I removed the Polk Blackstone box. Inside were the usual suspects: 4 surround speakers, 1 center speaker and a hefty sub-woofer. Initial feedback was pretty impressive. They had a nice quality feel and were relatively heavy. With speakers and sub-woofers, I generally find that to be a good thing, indicating solid build and heavy magnets for the speakers.
The next 2 hours was me replacing my 15+ year-old existing speaker wire. I did not want to taint my experience (positive or negative) by effecting performance with external variables. That said, I did have to buy an additional spool of wire for the last speaker, but I do have a LARGE basement so I was expecting that.
All speakers are wired and connected... Important note, they chose to use a locking nut design that I really appreciated. It offered a 100% positive feeling in knowing that your speaker wire was fully connected. I don't really have anything against standard spring loaded wire connections, but these are certainly more high quality and positive. Another important note, they also included templates for mounting the 4 surrounds and 1 center speaker. I also appreciated that the speakers offer multiple mounting options from table top, speaker mounting kits and simple wall mount with a basic screw/nail single mount. Nice options.
Next was the Denon AVR-S540BT receiver. Bare in mind, this an entry level receiver, but that DOES NOT mean its NOT a good receiver. This is an excellent option for a great choice for any 5.1 home theater. While you can always spend more money (sometimes a LOT more$$$) to get more features and advanced options, but there is nothing wrong this unit. I honestly find it to be nicely equipped for the price-point and found no features I had to have to meet my needs and the needs of most for nice 5.1 option.
The receiver offers multiple HDMI inputs, 3 that are 4K pass-through. The front panel clean and simple, yet effective and efficient. Very handsome unit. The remote is large, but for me, that's a good thing. With my big-old sausage fingers, the buttons are nicely spaced and clearly labeled even for my old 48 year old eyes. I do wish it were back-lit, but still a very nice start.
Set up was straight-forward and simple. On powering unit up, it is best to have it connected to a TV, monitor or projector. If you do, it will clearly display instructions. It will take you from the best suggestions for speaker placement, clear through the speaker attenuation (to get the most balanced surround experience) to the HDMI 4K port set-up. In all, it took less than 5 minutes.
Where the rubber hits the road is in how this sounds. I started off with Dunkirk on Blu-ray. Wow. I was impressed. You could easily hear the bullets and bombs moving towards and from you and the thunder of bombs and mortars all around you. This thing packs a punch, but does so with an impressive elegance for an off-the-shelf box like this. The surround quality was excellent, the highs were crisp without being over-bearing and they blended nicely with crisp and smooth mids which are then impressively melted with the rich and powerful lows. The sub-woofer is excellent. I have a similar sized Bose that is impressive on its merits, but this Polk is the most impressive I have ever experienced in a home environment in a long time.
A final note if you chose to buy this great unit, one nice feature to easily and immediately adjust this to your tastes and your room, on the remote there is a button labeled "CH LEVEL" that will quickly and intuitively allow let you adjust the dB level of each speaker, including the sub. I would suggest fiddling with that for a few minutes and using a couple mediums to fine tune or your ear and room.
While there are far too many other features to list that would take weeks to experience and fine-tune, I have no problem recommending this unit to a friend.
I also have no problem giving a 5 star rating. I am not going to "punish it" for not being a $900 unit. No, it does not have Dolby Atmos. No, it does not have 7.1 or 9.2 or anything else, but what it does have is great digital decoding and an excellent 5.1 option.
Additionally, these speakers are also an excellent value that offer impressive quality. They easily out-kick their coverage. Great value.

Good Headphones, Some Things Better Than Others
on June 2, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
First impressions: Nice packaging, attractive. More substantial than some competitors flimsy and plasicy packaging. Easy to open, no need for a pocket knife to force open a plastic clam-shell.
Inside you'll find the headset, the chords and MixAmp M80 control. These are good looking headphones. They have a substantial look and feel. Some other competitors offer a worthy challenge but they have a plastic look and feel feel and do not have the substantial feel these have. So for, I'm impressed.
As for sound, there are pros and cons. The pros are impressive sound and you have more control over your game experience than most competitors. The highs are crisp, the mids are balanced and the lows are rich and lifelike. One of the better headsets we have ever used. The cons are nitpicking on my part but noticeable. Admitting that it's by design, these units (as shipped) do not isolate background noise nearly as well some of their competitors. For some environments, that may be a good thing, but my son and I prefer the immersion of isolation to disappear into game-play. That said, you can buy a mod-kit that offers the ability to isolate and eliminate most background noise. The mod kit comes with several designs to create a semi-unique headset and includes isolating modules, another mic, upper head-pad and additional ear pads but that does cost around $60 list price. Is it a deal-breaker? By no means. but it is worth noting and additional cost for an already pricey (but worthy) unit.
Another nice feature is that the microphone is easily moved to either let or right side depending on your preference. Overall, these are quality in both appearance and performance.
The mix amp is cool. I like the options it gives over most competitors to afford customized in-game audio experience. In addition to easily controllable volume and mute button, it also comes wit 3 pre-set mix options for game mode, voice mode or chat mode, but also the customized buttons to adjust to your liking. There is also a great volume adjusting wheel and mute button that will light up when in mute mode so your teenager does not need to be embarrassed when you remind them that its time to shower or walk their dog or do the dishes. I know my 17 year old son appreciates the visual acknowledgement that he is indeed muted when mom or dad remind them of their domestic duties
The one item that some other competitors offer that would be a :nice to have is mic muting by simply flipping to mic upwards. There is a nice big button that is a simple thumb move away for muting but it would be nice to have the second muting option. In all honesty, this would not even be something we would know we would miss unless other headphones we've used hadn't had it but if you are used to that feature, it's worth noting this does not have that option.
End of the day, I am impressed with this setup. It does have more high-points than lows and even the lows are easily overcome. If you are ready to take the next step in improving your audio in-game experience, these are a great starting point.
In all, I would easily recommend to a friend or as a gift for the gamer in your life.

Excellent Choice, Quality Lock
on May 24, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
I have been wanting a Smart-lock for quite some time but never found one that I really liked. When I got the opportunity to get this unit, I was all over it. Yale has been making locks for over 150 years and have a great reputation. I'm glad I made the decision.
Out of the box there is the front and back of the lock, the tumbler, batteries, striker components, the August router and the door open/close (Door Defender) sensor. My first impression of the lock itself is that it is high quality. It's heavy (in a good way), solid and attractive. Tactile feedback is excellent. There is no doubt this is a quality unit.
Physical installation was straight forward. My 17 year old son (under my supervision) had it physically installed in less than 15 minutes. So far, so good.
Now it;s time to program the lock to the August router and associate our phones to the unit and get on the WiFi. We had to try several times but after about 25 minutes, and several false starts / re-sets, we finally got it going. While I'll admit this was frustrating, I'm not going to be able to lay the blame on the Yale lock. Too many variables. But end of the day, the end product that Yale delivered was worth the challenge.
So by now, we have the lock installed, the apps on our phones, the router on the WiFi network and we are ready to go. Programming the lock was a breeze.
Once programmed, using the lock could not be any more simple. Enter your code to lock or unlock and the digital key pad lights top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top depending on whether you lock or unlock.
You can hear the lock engaging / disengaging but it is a comforting sound. Certainly not too loud, but loud enough to know the lock is working.
A nice feature, if your door is just slightly not quite closed enough for the lock to engage, it will try 3 times and after the 3rd attempt it will audibly warn you that it was not able to lock. Additionally, the app will display that the door is ajar and NOT locked. A simple tug on the door and it will lock once you re-engage. Nice feature.
While there are too many features to list, there are countless options for allowing access / codes to guests, vendors, trusted friends/family... There are also countless options to set timed access by day and time, temporary access, limited access, unlimited access.. Too many to list but the options are many and customizable.
Hopefully helpful tip: We have 3 friends/neighbors who we all take care of the others houses while on vacation. I programmed my lock code to the codes that they use to get into their houses. So in an emergency, they would have easily memorable recall to get into my house.
The app is great. Simple, clean, effective. You can control the lock from anywhere and see who and when opened / locked the unit and receive notifications when any action occurs that include when and who did what. Very nice.
You can also program the lock to automatically open when you (and your phone) arrive at your home. My wife likes this option, but I prefer to have the manual control. Regardless, its a nice option.
Another nice option is the "Door Defender" that tells you whether your door is open or closed. It requires boring a small hole in your door frame, but my 17 year old had it installed in less than 2 minutes. Very nice addition to the package that I would not have missed were it not included, but since it was, I now value it as a must have.
End of the day, I rarely give 5 star reviews but this product clearly earns that distinction. Great product. Well done Yale and August.
I would (and have) recommend to a friend. I am pleased to have this on my front door.

Decent Unit, Battery Could (Should?) Be Better
on May 23, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Where to start?
This is a really attractive and quality feeling product. Out of the box, set up was simple. The box included several passive attachments (brush heads), one "Fluffy" powered head for hardwood and hard surfaces and one smaller powered brush head for most other cleaning requirements.
The control head was very lightweight, easy to assemble and easy to handle. The powered fluffy head was pretty cool as it had red and blue fibers when at rest, but when powered on, it's purple. My 14 year old daughter thought that was pretty cool. So far so good...
Now my wife put it to the first test on our hardwoods. It did a great job on loose dirt and dog hair but she was expecting more based on Dyson's legacy that it generally "threw" larger items, like hole-punches from paper, little chunks of paper etcetera. The power was not quite as expected, but not a deal breaker.
The attachments were easily changed and had enough options for most jobs. It did a great job on the stairs as it was lightweight and quite portable.
I was about to give this a 5 star review, and then...
The battery... OK, here is where the 5 star went away. It's advertised as a 30 minute battery life, BUT it should be listed with an asterisk: 30 minutes battery life if you DON'T use a powered attachment. If you do use a powered attachment, its more like 7 or 8 minutes. I'm not gonna' lie, the Mrs. was NOT happy with that. Her thoughts were if it says 30, it should near that but under most applications, that's just not even near reality.
The end of the day, I went back and forth between a 3 star and 4 star rating. A 4 star rating would have been easier to give if the box and collateral material had indicated real-world battery time, but it didn't.
If I could give a 3.5 rating I would, but I am going to give it 4 stars based on the fact that it is a decent unit for most purposes and the fact that it comes with excellent warranty, repair and support for the segment.
While I would recommend to a friend, I would most assuredly caveat to be aware of the battery life and not being real-world anywhere near advertised.
Dyson team, I am aware you read these and I hope you can take into account and pass along to those who know that advertising real-world battery life would have went a long way in my wife's (and I am sure countless others) minds.

Very Nice Unit
on May 15, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
These are my 3rd pair of Sony headsets. I have one set that is a little lower, and one set that is a couple steps above this model, so I have a fair amount of Sony experience to compare too...
That said, these are attractive, comfortable, easy to use units. As always, they have good Sony quality and great Sony sound. This unit has a little better sound and comfort than the model below, but the XB Extra Bass is where these really stand out. You really can tell the extra bass. It is well rounded and (at least to my ear) not overbearing.
The one area I would like to see these improved is to offer active noise cancelling. The higher end Sony I have is Sony - XB950N1 from Best Buy.and they do have the active noise cancelling, but also are a little more comfortable and offer overall better sound. Please don't read that as these Sony - XB700 have bad sound, but just that considerably pricier Sony's have a little better sound, as should be expected..
End of the day, these are excellent mid-budget headphones that depending on your need, you can't go wrong with. For most applications these are great. However, if you do a lot of air-travel, the active noise cancellation offered on other Sony headsets may justify the additional cost. If you don't do much air travel, these are an excellent choice. I would highly recommend them to a friend.

Don't Really Know
on May 7, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
So far, not impressed...
First thing first. The packaging was, well, strange. The external sleeve was about 1/3" longer than interior packaging. It was just... Strange.
On opening, it had everything EXCEPT the USB to 2 prong power connector that plugs into wall. To reality check me and to make sure I was not having a 48 year-old man crazy moment, I had my 17 year old tripple check the packaging to see if he could find it. Nope. They did not send it. I mean, I guess I understand that mistakes can be made, but without the OEM power converter, I really can't use or determine efficacy of the unit.
OK, is that a deal breaker? Well, not necessarily, I understand simple mistakes can be made. I'm willing to forgive, but...
I called the Tech Support line to have the send me a replacement USB / wall-power converter. On hold for 17 minutes. No answer. OK, maybe they are under super heavy use. I can always try again. Called back next day, on hold again for 15+ minutes and I decided to choose "Press any key to leave a message" to leave my name and number for a call-back. I left the request for a callback more than 5 hours before they closed. So far, no call back. Not impressed.
I'd like to be able to offer a more detailed review but I can't. Really not a good start to my relationship with Mohu.
I'm hoping I can get this resolved because I want to be able to use this in our RV so the wife can watch her prime-time broadcast shows and I can watch college football when we are traveling, but so far, this is a brick.

Very Cool

Cool little device, and it offers an element of safety for my 17 year old son.
As a relatively new driver, this was the perfect option as soon as I saw it available. Knowing he can easily access safety, traffic, driving information through his car speakers is great. And while it does not really offer a great deal new compared to our current set-up, since the the connection to phone is wireless, it is one less chord in the way and one less "physical connection" to potentially distract from driving.
Set up was easy. He had it going in a matter of a couple minutes. The internal microphones are a step-up from the existing phone speakers and do a good job at cancelling background noise and accurately picking up human voice.
This is a great little unit to offer modern upgrade to older cars. Perfect for our situation.
Yes, I would reccoend it to a friend, especially when it can offer a defined safety upgrade.

Not Ready For Prime-time
on April 16, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Not Ready For Prime-time. Not even close.
Installation: Installing was not really hard but not necessarily easy. Had I had a furnace/thermostat that had a "C" wire, it would have been a breeze, but without that, I had to use the included adapter. Is that a deal-breaker? No, but certainly worth noting.
WiFi Connectivity: I have both 2.4 and 5 gig in my house. After multiple attempts on the 5 gig, I absolutely could not connect. I decided to try the 2.4 and it connected straight away with the app on my phone. Again, is it a deal breaker? Well, no, but it is quite frustrating.
Setup: Once installed and connected to the app, setup was relatively easy. Is it outstanding? No, but it's functional.
Operation: Yeah, it's ok. Again, nothing outstanding but it does what you expect.
So far, you are probably asking why is this guy giving a 1 star rating? Fair question because so far we are somewhere between a 3 and 4 star. So why did I give it a 1 star? Please read on...
A great deal of the reason we chose this was because all over everywhere with anything regarding the Honeywell T9, it is advertised as being compatible with several SmartHome platforms including Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana and SmartThings as well as others.
When we went to connect to the Google Assistant, it told me to go to mytotalconnectcomfort.com and sign up. OK, no problem... Signed up and went to register the T9 and it asked me for the MAC and the Device CRC. MAC was no problem, easy to get. Entered it and then went to look for the CRC. After trying several things that while not specifically listed as CRC, they might have been just under a slightly different nomenclature. Nope, nothing worked.
I finally surrendered and decided to call Tech support. After a less-than satisfactory interaction with the initial agent and several bouts of being on hold, I was told that no, it does not actually work with Google Assistant or any other home control. Being frustrated, I asked to speak to her supervisor and he confirmed it was not currently compatible but a future release would hopefully make it compatible. Offering that this was on a grand scale, false advertising, the supervisor forwarded us to the Honeywell Escalation Service Team. I called them and left message and am currently waiting on call back. Not impressed.
In closing, I would generally go into more detail regarding features, both positive and negative, but to be honest, I simply can not because the feature set is incomplete.
In all, no, I absolutely would not recommend to a friend.
NOT IMPRESSED.

Very Cool Little Speaker
on April 12, 2019
Posted by: Posted1
from Niwot CO
Best place to start is in summary... Very cool little speaker!
Arrived in standard cardboard box, opened up and nicely presented factory packaging. I was confident in knowing I would be getting a good product.
After opening, charging and familiarizing myself, it paired quite quickly. No problem at all.
Sound quality was really quite good for a small package. Would be perfect for outdoor activities... Pool, beach, yard work etcetera. It is listed as IP67 rating for "dustproof" and "waterproof", but more on that a little later.
The light feature is a little gimmicky but the kids like it, so I guess it's cool.
The unit does a have some features I was not able to test, but worth mentioning is the "Party Chain" where multiple units can be synched up. Pretty cool, but I'm not sure how valuable or often you would really use it.
The ap was as to be expected from Sony. Gives you easy control over speaker features, BUT it's yet another ap in a seemingly never-ending sea of aps.
I also like the size. Really good and portable unit. It can be placed horizontally or vertically dependent on need and environment so that's a handy feature.
As previously mentioned, this unit is IP67 rated. What does that mean? First, it can be submersed into a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. That said, I personally would not test it, but I would be 100% comfortable with this little guy with the kids out by the pool, at the beach or use it to work in the yard and if a sprinkler came on, no problem.
It is also listed on the IP67 scale as dust-proof. Would I sandblast it? No way, but would I take it to a silky sand beach in Western Florida or crescent beach in Hawaii? Yes, by all means.
In all this is an excellent choice for a very good sounding, easily portable and dust/water-proof speaker. Also, for the price point, it's a great option for the kids to use in their ever-active list of activities.I would have no reservations recommending to a friend.
Nice little unit!

OK, I've noticed that vinyl has been making a screaming comeback. For the life of me, I could not figure out why... Then my daughter discovered Taylor Swift picture disks and wondered how in the world such technology could possibly work... My wife got her the Taylor Swift picture disk for her birthday so I decided I might as well give her the opportunity to experience the late 80's like the wife and I.
I determined this would be a good option given it's wireless capacity. I looked at some "self contained" units that had built in power and speakers and also looked at units that would require external speakers and external amp. I figured this would be the 'cleanest" option since you can hook up multiple BT wireless speakers to meet any rooms sound capacity (small speaker for dorm, medium for apartment, large for basement bar etcetera) in addition to the external wired option if an existing stereo / sound system exists. This was the perfect option for our needs and provided multiple opportunities.
The hook up was simple. A couple minutes and she had it going to her little wireless speaker. When she placed that vinyl down and the needle automatically rested on the first track, she was amazed! The "technology" was so unique to her experience. She listened for seeming hours!
Ease of use was great, pairing was simple and the sound was really warm. I remember "back in the day" a similar experience would have taken an entire cabinet of hardware and hundreds of dollars in equipment. Pretty cool!
In all, very mice product. If you have a need or desire, this is a very good mid-level product. My only minor area for opportunity is I wish it would have more color options and perhaps even a throw-back design, but that's really it.
In all, I would recommend this to a friend.

how do I get my mouse to move properly on my intel computer screen

I'm not sure I understand the question. You should be able to plug the USB into your PC, turn your mouse to the "on" position and have it operate no problems.
