Cheap insurance against subpar drivers
on July 30, 2020
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
Last summer, a commercial delivery driver decided sitting in traffic for an extra 30 seconds was too much to handle and decided to back up, right into the front of my brand new car. After exchanging information and going on about our ways, I realized that the situation could have turned into a dispute if that driver simply lied and said that I hit him. That got me started in looking for a suitable dashcam to potentially protect myself against future incidents.
The Rexing unit was easy enough to install. The included panel tool made it easy for me to route the power cable under the headliner, tuck it behind the A-pillar and under my dash to the 12-volt, cigarette lighter plug. Rexing makes a "hardwire kit" that I might consider, although my car has two 12 plugs up front (plus a standalone USB), so I'm not sure I really need it since I was able to use the included adapter and route the cable inconspicuously. The camera powers up nicely when I start my car and shuts down promptly when I turn the car off. I mounted the camera to the right of my rear-view mirror and while I'm sitting in the driver's seat, I don't even realize it's there. The video resolution is solid and there's plenty of features built-in, many of which I haven't even began to explore yet. I haven't decided if the rear-facing camera for in-car and partial rear car recording is a benefit or if I'd rather have the higher resolution yet. For the most part, I'm using just the default settings for everything.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the camera. I consider it something like insurance in that I hope I never need it!

Whiter teeth
on May 31, 2020
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
Having tried other products before with unexciting results, I was a bit skeptical when it came to the claims that this product makes. Upon receipt of the Snow Teeth Whitening System, I opened the box to find a graduated card to scale the current color of my teeth. I was actually quite surprised to learn that my teeth aren't apparently as yellow as I've often led myself to believe (about a 5 on the card). Still, I knew there was room for improvement.
The kit comes with 4 tubes of product, in a pen-style tube. On the one end is a brush and on the other is a part that you twist to dispense the product. I had to twist if quite a few times before anything came out. I panted up my teeth, put the mouth piece in, and plugged it into my phone. I noticed that the product has a minor taste; It's not terrible, but it's not pleasant either; I simply try not to swallow any. The mouthpiece gets its power from a USB cable. What I really liked is that they provide plenty of options for connecting this to "power" for USB: It has a regular USB-A, USB-C, micro USB, and a lightning connector (Apple products).
I've been using the product for a week now and have noticed my teeth slowly becoming whiter. I've moved up to about a 4 on the grading card that came with it. This seems promising!
What I haven't been so fond of is the apparent lack of application support for the wired model. I found that there was an app available for my phone, so I quickly downloaded it and starting setting it up. During the setup process, it tried to connect to the mouthpiece. Although I had it plugged into my phone, I realized that it was trying to connect wirelessly. Evidently, the app can only be utilized with the wireless model and not the wired model; this was a bit disappointing.

Bye bye stubble
on February 5, 2020

It's been many years since I've used an electric shaver; around 14 I would say. I remember how an electric shaver always allowed me to shave without having to worry about creams, cartridges, or more importantly, having to wash/dry my face and neck afterwards. When my trusty electric shaver died oh so many years ago, I decided to switch back to standard replacement cartridge razors. Personally, I always thought that straight blades gave a closer and overall better shave than electric razors at the cost of convenience. I really hadn't considered switching back to an electric shaver as I just didn't feel like they had "advanced" over the years; not to say that cartridge razors have come that far.
Enter the Philips Norelco SmartClick shaver. This shaver has provided me with a much better shave than I remember getting with my old electric model. To me, what really sets this model apart from my previous shaver, is it's included cleaning/charging system. Although it takes up quite a bit of space on the counter, the charging/cleaning station helps to renew and greatly prolong the lifetime of the blades. A set of dirty, dull blades does not offer a great user experience. Once a week, I can just pop this shaver into it's base, push the button, and the next time I grab the shaver, it's as good as brand new. I'm confident that the blades will not need to be physically replaced for quite some time.
What has greatly improved with my shaving experience is that I can now shave in the shower safely. I'm as good as blind without my glasses on, which makes shaving with a traditional razor in the shower difficult, even with a mirror. I would constantly have to re-shave areas that I had missed with a traditional razor. This usually provided for some nice razor burn on my sensitive skin. This shaver allows me to go over my entire face, multiple times when necessary, without the fear of razor burn. Of course, I can also just shave in front of the mirror (outside of the shower) as well without having to wash residual cream off of my face.
So why only 4 stars? While I'm quite fluent with connected devices and mobile applications, I was dissatisfied to learn that some of the shavers settings could only be modified from within the app. This isn't a complete deal-breaker, as I can't imagine that I would adjust the settings all that often anyways, but it's still strange to me that in 2020, Philips couldn't provide an alternate solution (like ONE more button on the shaver...). Either way, the convenience and comfort that this shaver provides as a shaver is well worth that minor inconvenience.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this shaver and it has, once again, converted me off of expensive (over-priced), disposable cartridges.

Cafe-style drinks from the comfort of home
on November 24, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
I've never been one to spend a ton of money on "fancy" coffee drinks; ie: the place with the green logo that's on every corner and in ever grocery store. Every now and then, I might splurge on a drink, but I would say, no more than once ever other month or so. Enter this Nespresso machine. This thing makes quality drinks at a fraction of the price of those coffee shops. Are they "as good as" what I would be paying $5-6 for? Not quite, but don't let that fool you. I've managed to go through the 14-pod sample pack and another store-bought 10-pack in only two weeks. All of the drinks that I've made have been milk-based drinks (I'm not big on strong, black coffee..give me cream and sugar!) and have been delicious. The ease at which this machine makes these drinks, along with giving me the option to add more hot milk or milk foam is fantastic.
What I love most about this machine, is that the milk container is removable and easily cleaned. I just pour milk into the included container, connect it to the front of the machine, drop in a pod, and push the button of the drink that I want. After it makes my drink, I swap my drink cup for another "waste" cup, turn the dial on the milk container, and it automatically switches to clean mode. This only takes about 20 seconds, but it basically back washes the cartridge inside of the milk container with hot, steamy water. Once done, you pull the milk container away from the machine, which disconnects it. You can then pop it back in the fridge for your next use. None of the "cleaning water" ever mixes with the milk, so there is no cross-contamination. After about a week, you can easily dismantle the milk container and clean it.
Another great feature is the built-in pod bin that stores your used, waste pods. When you lift the lid to insert a pod, the used pod is automatically ejected into this pod bin, which is easily pulled out and can be cleaned. The machine also includes a tube that can be connected to the machine (it conveniently stores in the back) for descaling and cleaning; I have yet to use that since the machine is still new.
If there was any room for improvement, it would be in the placement of the water reservoir. The reservoir is mounted to the back of the machine. Depending on the placement of your machine, you won't be able to see the amount of water in the reservoir without making a distinct effort to look. Twice I've managed to run the machine out of water. This is in no way a deal breaker and more a reflection of me being inpatient and cautious enough to look before making my cup. Additionally, the machine is much shorter than my other brewers, making brewing directly into my larger travel mug impossible. I just brew into a glass measuring cup and then pour that into my travel mug; that's 10 seconds of my day I can spare :)
The machine is also louder than other pod-based coffee makers that I've used, but not by much. When you consider that it is frothing milk for you and what that takes, it's also not a deal-breaker.
Do understand that Nespresso is not a big of a household name as the "other" pod-based coffee company on the market. This will vastly limit the availability and options when it comes to purchasing pods. However, with a more limited selection, it actually makes shopping for pods easier. You don't have to get bogged down with the seemingly endless supply of "flavor" options. If you want something specific, by the syrups or flavors and make your concoction. Remember, most coffee houses only have a few different styles of beans that they are brewing. Admittedly, the cost of these pods is slightly higher, but I would also argue that the quality is better and it is still MUCH cheaper than purchasing one of these drinks at a coffee shop.
Overall, I've been very happy with this machine. With the attention to detail and built-in cleaning capabilities, I'm confident that it will outlast the other pod brewers that I've had. Additionally, it gives me the ability to have a premium coffee drink without the price tag.

Better safe than sorry!

I've been an avid AVG user for many years. Outside of the built-in software suites that sometimes comes installed on many computers (ie. McAfee), I've always used AVG as my antivirus solution. This is one of those products where you can't really be too sure that it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. As I have not had any malware, bug, issues, explosions of either of my computers, I can venture to say that AVG is doing it's job.
If there was any complaint, it's that the suite is packaged into multiple different applications, all with a unique subset of tasks, all that cost extra money. it would be nice if there wasn't a profit-model that was quite so split and a product that offered a one-stop-shop experience that gives you everything that the various AVG apps provide.
Either way, this software has kept my computer running in tip-top shape and does not seem to cause any negative drag or system degradation while running.

Better than using a manual brush
on October 13, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
This brush provides me a cleaner and more efficiently clean mouth than manual brushing alone, but the ultra-sonic oscillations do take some getting used to. Unlike the brush that the dentist uses that rotates, this brush pulses/oscillates and roughly 30k oscillations per minute. Even on low, I found this to be a bit much for my sensitive gums. Perhaps this will subside over time as my mouth/teeth/gums adjust to this "feeling". The charging dock is nice and always provides me with a charged toothbrush without the hassle of batteries.
Apart from that, there's really nothing that sets this brush apart from the rest. While I would recommend this brush overall, there are others on the market that provide essentially the same features.

Improvement over previous generation; still buggy
on October 13, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
Overall, I've been happy with the Arlo product line. This setup was to expand upon the two Arlo Pro 2's and three security lights that I already have.
Setup of these cameras was very easy, especially in comparison to the previous generation. The cameras paired quickly and seamlessly with the included hub/base with little interaction required on my part. I was able to pair all of the previous generation components to the new smart base by pushing the 'Sync' button on the older cameras; a wizard for setting up each component made setup a breeze.
So why the loss of one star? Unfortunately, the Arlo app, while a nice user experience and easy to use, still has some well-known flaws. My biggest complaint is in the geofencing option. When geofencing works, it makes this a fantastic setup. However, at least a few times per week, the system will either not recognize that I or my wife (the two phones that I have setup) have left the house, or will not recognize that we have returned. In many cases, this has forced us to simply disarm the system to avoid any useless and annoying alerts.
On the second night of having these high-def units installed, a dense, rolling fog on my front porch caused these to trigger motion alerts all night long. I'm not sure whether I should praise the fact that the graphics were good enough to pick up heavy fog or criticize them for not being able to detect the fog by way of the "Smart Alerts".
Barring this, the Arlo ecosystem is quite nice and is a nice edition to my expanding smart home technologies. I just wish the few bugs could be worked out and that Arlo would add in a Ring-style doorbell that provides video and audio, as opposed to just audio.

Decent beverage cooler, better suited for wine
on September 2, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster
This beverage cooler does a pretty good job of keeping our bottles of wine cooled to the right temperature. What I find a little lacking in this unit is in its ability to cool other drinks.
If you are using this only for wine, then this cooler will work well for you. Bottles were chilled to a nice temperature for wine drinking (41 - 50 degrees). There is also a handy chart inside the door with recommended temperatures for various wine types. However, the lowest possible setting for this cooler is 41 degrees. While this is plenty suited for wine, some might find it sub-par for other drinks. It would be nice if this cooler could be lowered to 37 or even 35 degrees to get more cooling capacity.
Another disappointing factor with this unit was that the wooden shelves (which are actually quite nice) can only be removed and are not adjustable vertically. This essentially means that you can either use the shelf or remove it; there is no option to raise/lower any of the shelves.
Finally, I was a little shocked to see that a standard, incandescent light bulb was used to light the inside of the fridge. It's 2019, why would GE not use a LED to light the inside of the cabinet.
On the positive side, the compressor is quiet and you can barely tell that it is running and it does recover quickly when the door is opened for a more than average length of time.
Overall, this beverage cooler is suiting us well for keeping wine cool and at the ready.

Nicest keypad lock I've used, but could be better
on June 13, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster, OH
I've had experience with a handful of different "keypad" style locks since they first popped up on the market, but this is the nicest and most advanced I've come across. Installation was just slightly more advanced than installing a typical lock. However, buyer beware that this lockset does require more door real estate. This would likely not be a wise choice for a door with a deadbolt, as there wouldn't be enough room for the deadbolt. On the topic of size, this unit does have slightly more depth than the handle it replaced; my storm door just touches the lever when it is closed.
After installing the lockset, setup within the app was straightforward and easy enough to complete. Fully configured, the lock can be opened numerous different ways: physical key, digital passcode, fingerprint, or via smartphone through the app. The main selling point and what helps set this lock apart from the rest on the market, is the fact that the numbers are always in a random order on the keypad, making it nearly impossible for someone to see and steal your code. I was impressed by the speed of the fingerprint reader and ease of use as well. Additionally, there is a set of pins on the bottom of the exterior escutcheon plate that will register against a 9-volt battery in the event the batteries die, showing that Lockly was well aware of a very possible situation of being locked out. The pins automatically detect the polarity of the battery and adjust accordingly.
A few minor annoyances:
-It would be nice if there was a way to schedule some of the features of the lock. For instance, turning off open/close notifications during certain hours OR turning them on for specific hours (think, accessed during the night while you are asleep)
-Fingerprint reader is only compatible with certain print types. My wife and I were able to register our fingers without issue, but numerous tries with my 6-year-old proved to be a waste of time
-While installing the interior backing plate, one of the three screws would not go in and eventually got stripped. Fortunately, Lockly provides a bag of extra screws. The backup screw went in about 90% of the way before that screw head, too, started to cam out.
-No Apple Homekit support
Overall, this is a very nice keypad lock that has done quite a bit to try to differentiate it from the competition. Many of my grievances can and will hopefully soon be addressed by future software/firmware updates.

Good at Hair Removal
on May 9, 2019
Posted by: Terry
from Lancaster, OH
I've had this item for 5 months now and I can see a difference. I have really thick dark hair, so I was excited to get this item. It has done a great job with slowing down my hair growth. I don't need to shave as often, so I believe it's working. I used to have to shave every other day, to now only twice a week. I can't wait until I don't have to shave at all!
I did not give it 5 stars because of the difficulty I have using it on certain parts of my legs. I have skinny legs, and the head has to be completely down for the light to activate. I struggle with my ankle, shin and knee areas. I have to sit in an uncomfortable position and push down hard on the tip to get it to work. Works great the back and sides of my legs, my thighs, bikini and underarms.
