Proving that anything will eventually make it to DVD, here comes Cool World from Paramount. This disaster of near epic proportions makes one wonder why some other titles, considered the greatest or most wanted, still haven't been released on disc. Not that it's a completely wasted effort, as the sound and picture are of fairly good quality. The image, framed at the theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and anamorphic, alternates from dark and shadowy to unnaturally colorful. While this is, more or less, a direct translation of the projected print, the detail of the DVD highlights how mediocre the film appears. More often than not, this digital format emphasizes just how laughable the animation turned out. The 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack, while also not living up to any true potential, does utilize the surrounds on occasion, and the bass is generally deep. Dialogue isn't one of the strong points, though, as it's often flat and, at times, muted. Paramount, known for often leaving titles devoid of supplements, does just that with this disc. Not a thing is offered -- not even the film's trailer. This really isn't much of a surprise, because what could be said about such a wasted effort? If anything, an apology from director Ralph Bakshi should be included.

'Roger Rabbit' Ripoff
on May 7, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I feel this movie is basically a 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' ripoff, only geared more towards adults, and not nearly as good. At the same time, it's not one of the worst movies I've seen. Widescreen.

Really one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm quite shocked it was even released on dvd. Widescreen and full-screen viewing options for those who want to bother.

Strange & Twisted

Based off the Roald Dahl childrens book, This twisted and bizarre remake of the 1971 classic film, and directed by Tim Burton, is extremely poor. A relatively good cast and production team goes to waste here. Stick with the infinitely better 1971 version starring Gene Wilder and titled 'Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.'

Homer's sprawling tale of love and war in ancient Greece comes to the screen in all its grandeur in this epic-scale adventure. In 1193 B.C., Paris, Prince of Troy (Orlando Bloom), has fallen in love; however, the beautiful woman who has beguiled him is Helen, Queen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), who is wed to King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson). While Helen is hardly immune to Paris' charms, this doesn't blunt Menelaus' fury when Paris steals her away from him. Menelaus' brother Agamemnon (Brian Cox), the power-hungry king of the Mycenaeans, is eager to expand his empire through Troy to the lands of the Aegean Sea, and he uses Paris' romantic slight against Menelaus as an excuse to wage an all-out war against the great walled city. Priam, King of Troy (Peter O'Toole), summons his armies, led by Prince Hector (Eric Bana), to meet the onslaught of Agamemnon's forces, but while the great city has yet to yield in a battle, Agamemnon has a formidable ally -- Achilles (Brad Pitt), a mighty and seemingly unstoppable warrior whose presence could tip the scales in Agamemnon's favor. Sean Bean, Julie Christie, Saffron Burrows, and Rose Byrne highlight the film's supporting cast.

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image on each side in every frame.

Could Have Been Much Better

Brad Pitt fails to intrigue me, as does the rest of the cast for that matter, in this screen adaptation of the legendary warrior Achilles and the 'Battle of Troy.' The sad thing is, this film had potential to be something great. Widescreen with ample bonus features.

The Rod Serling-scripted science-fiction classic comes to DVD with this lavish two-disc special edition. Starring Charlton Heston, Planet of the Apes is the story of an astronaut who crash-lands on a planet inhabited by intelligent apes who are oppressive to the human inhabitants. As the astronaut struggles to free himself from the trappings of his ape captors, he comes closer and closer to discovering a startling secret. The first disc includes a full-screen transfer of the film with the original English soundtrack available in both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS 5.1 Surround Sound. Additionally, there are dubbed audio tracks in Spanish and French and subtitles in English and Spanish. The film can also be viewed with one of two running commentary tracks. The first features actors Roddy McDowall, Natalie Trundy, and Kim Hunter with producer John Chambers, while the second features composer Jerry Goldsmith. Text commentary is also available by Eric Greene. The second disc is absolutely loaded with supplemental material. Along with production documentaries and featurettes, there is home-movie footage shot by McDowall, a collection of dailies and outtakes, several trailers, still images, and more. A widescreen version with the same features is also available.

This pan & scan version chops the aspect ratio of the film from its original 2.35:1 widescreen ratio, down to 1.33:1. The result, you lose almost 50% of the picture in every frame! Buy the widescreen version.
