Ted Kotcheff continues his First Blood fervor with Uncommon Valor. Gene Hackman stars as Col. Cal Rhodes, a retired U.S. army colonel who has been getting the run-around for ten years from the government concerning the disappearance of his son. Rhodes' son was last seen in Laos, where he was fighting in the Vietnam War and captured as a POW in Laos. When word gets back to Rhodes that his son may still be alive, but the government still has him listed as missing in action, Rhodes decides to take matters into his own hands. Contacting an old friend, oil baron MacGregor (Robert Stack), Rhodes is granted financial backing to form his own incursion force. Gathering together his son's marine pals, he puts his ragtag army through an intensive period of training. and they head back into the Laotian jungles to search for his son.

I Thought This One Was Pretty Good
on May 8, 2008

I thought the performances were good in this movie about a retired colonel (Gene Hackman) putting together a recon-team to try and rescue his POW son in Laos. Also stars Patrick Swayze in one of his earlier roles. Widescreen, recommended.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in Ron Howard's romantic adventure as a couple lost in a new world of dreams and hopes in this MCA Home Video release. Presented in the original 2.20:1 widescreen aspect ratio (enhanced for 16 x 9 TVs) this release also features a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in addition to Spanish and French Dolby Digital Surround and optional Spanish subtitles. Extra features include production notes, film highlights, talent bios, and a theatrical trailer.

Better than Average

I found 'Far and Away' to be a better than average movie. It just gets a little long at times, and probably could have been tightened some. Still, worth the buy for those who enjoyed it. Widescreen.

Could Have Been Much Better

Brad Pitt fails to intrigue me, as does the rest of the cast for that matter, in this adaptation of Homer’s tale of the legendary Achilles and the famed battle of ‘Troy.’

Well Worth A Viewing
on May 8, 2008

‘Goodfellas’ is an excellent film that deals completely with the inner workings of an organized crime outfit. While it’s not the type of movie most will watch on a regular basis, it’s still well worth a viewing. For those who really enjoy this Scorsese piece, this Blue-Ray edition has plenty to offer in terms of bonus material.

Gattaca is a story set in the not-so-distant future where genetic tampering is all that stands between you and your future. Originally released a few years ago on DVD, Gattaca has been released a second time by Columbia in a new "Superbit" edition (which means a clearer picture and fuller sound) on DVD. This 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer looks exceptionally sharp and detailed. Everything in the image, including the colors, fleshtones, and black levels, are spot-on and very well-rendered; in short, this is a great-looking transfer by Columbia. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and DTS Surround, both featured in English. The DTS track and Dolby 5.1 track both sound full and expansive with no distortion or hiss present. The surround feature in both the rear and front speakers is heavy and very full with great clarity. Much like the video portion of this disc, the soundtrack is also top-notch. Also included on this disc are English, Chinese, French, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai subtitles. Columbia's theory is that since they are giving you great sound and video quality components, you don't need any extra features. As such, nary a trailer or commentary track can be found on this Gattaca: Superbit DVD. For those with a great home theater and TV, this disc is a very worthwhile buy. Otherwise, John Q. Buyer should stick with the original DVD release.

I Expected So Much More

‘Gattaca’ is another movie that received fairly good reviews from critics, which surprises me, because I found it completely uninteresting. Widescreen and DTS sound.

The Rod Serling-scripted science-fiction classic comes to DVD with this lavish two-disc special edition. Starring Charlton Heston, Planet of the Apes is the story of an astronaut who crash-lands on a planet inhabited by intelligent apes who are oppressive to the human inhabitants. As the astronaut struggles to free himself from the trappings of his ape captors, he comes closer and closer to discovering a startling secret. The first disc includes a widescreen anamorphic transfer of the film with the original English soundtrack available in both Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and DTS 5.1 Surround Sound. Additionally, there are dubbed audio tracks in Spanish and French and subtitles in English and Spanish. The film can also be viewed with one of two running commentary tracks. The first features actors Roddy McDowall, Natalie Trundy, and Kim Hunter with producer John Chambers, while the second features composer Jerry Goldsmith. Text commentary is also available by Eric Greene. The second disc is absolutely loaded with supplemental material. Along with production documentaries and featurettes, there is home-movie footage shot by McDowall, a collection of dailies and outtakes, several trailers, still images, and more. A full-screen version with the same features is also available.

Some Of Craig Safan's Best Work
on May 7, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I would rank Craig Safan's score to 'Remo Williams' as not just one of his best, but one of the best scores ever. Outstanding music, once again many thanks to Robin Esterhammer and 'Perseverance Records' for this first official release of the score.

Awesome Score to a Great Movie
on May 7, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
Kudos to Robin Esterhammer and 'Perseverance Records,' as well as composer Dennis Dreith for working together to officially release this score. It sounds beautiful, with additional bonus interviews at the end of the album with Dreith and movie director/editor Mark Goldblatt. Great movie, it's a shame it's out-of-print on dvd.

Billy Crystal's loving tribute to the record-breaking Yankee season of 1961 comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include biographies of the cast and crew, as well as Maris and Mantle, a making-of featurette, the original trailer, and a breakdown of the home runs hit by Maris and Mantle during that historical summer. Film and baseball enthusiasts should both find much to enjoy on this DVD release of 61*.

The film that virtually redefined how animation and live action can interact in film, director Robert Zemeckis' classic comedy arrives on DVD packed with extras thanks to Disney/Buena Vista Home Video. Viewable in either 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen or 1.33:1 pan-and-scan, this release offers a variety of audio options including closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, along with Spanish and French Dolby Digital Stereo options. In addition to the feature itself, disc one also offers the Roger Rabbit shorts Tummy Trouble, Rollercoaster Rabbit, and Trail Mix-Up, a "Who Made Roger Rabbit" featurette, and the set-top DVD game "Trouble in Toontown." Disc two contains even more bonus materials such as an audio commentary with the filmmakers, a deleted scene, "Behind the Ears: The True Story of Roger Rabbit," "Toon Stand-In" featurette showing rehearsals with real-life actors standing in for the cartoons, a "Toontown Confidential" pop-up trivia track, "The Valiant Files" interactive set-top gallery, a split screen comparison, a companion booklet, and two collectible glossies.

Groundbreaking
on May 7, 2008

'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' is more a groundbreaking film than a great one. But where the story sags at times, the ingenius combination of animation blended with live-action more than makes up for it. Nicely put together special edition here, recommended.
