Featuring an all-star cast of some of the hottest names of the '80s, Artisan's release of Young Guns offers a solid presentation of the revisionist western in addition to offering a handful of exciting extras. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, this release features audio rendered in either closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 or Stereo with optional Spanish subtitles. For those looking to take a blast into the past, this release also offers commentary by stars Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney, and Casey Siemaszko, a documentary on the real-life Billy the Kid, a trivia track, a theatrical trailer, and a trailer gallery.

The Cast Is the Highlight

Young Guns isn't a top-notch film in my opinion, but its got a great cast that's fun to watch. Abundant bonus features on this special edition release. Recommended, as is the sequel.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi team up to fight crime behind the Iron Curtain in this Cold War-era crime drama, which gets a polished release on DVD. Red Heat has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The audio has been mastered in two formats, Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround; the dialogue is in English with optional subtitles in English and Spanish. Bonus materials include the movie's original theatrical trailer, four television spots, and four documentary shorts on various aspects of the film's production.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Belushi make a hilarious team in this movie about a Chicago cop and Soviet police officer teaming up to catch a Russian drug lord. Fans will be happy to know there's plenty of bonus material to soak up on this special edition dvd. Recommended.

A vice-ridden louse must throw his bad habits to the wind in MGM/UA 's release of the classic Rodney Dangerfield comedy Easy Money. Viewable in either 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen or 1.33:1 full frame, this release also offers a selection of closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Mono or Spanish Dolby Digital Mono soundtracks with optional Spanish and French subtitles. Extra features include a theatrical trailer.

Not One of Dangerfield's Best

This supposed comedy starring Rodney Dangerfield is just not that funny. I only laughed maybe once or twice the whole film. I'd skip this one unless your a fanatic Dangerfield fan.

Tom Mankiewicz directs funny man John Candy in Delirious, which comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable in every way to the standard full-frame image. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, and a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are available in all three of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include the original theatrical trailer. MGM/UA has done a solid job with this film, especially when one considers the inexpensive list price.

One of Candy's Worst
on May 10, 2008

'Delirious' was a dismal outing for John Candy, and just not a well scripted movie. As a matter of fact, the only part I thought was funny was the very beginning of the movie, where Candy's character waits for the Cable repair man to show up (who is taking his time, doing all sorts things not work related while on the clock). Widescreen and full-screen.

Better than Expected

'Hudson Hawk' isn't nearly one of the best movies I've ever seen, but it's much better than I figured it would be. Not a bad performance by Bruce Willis in one of his earlier roles. Plenty of extras for fans to enjoy here on this special edition.

La Bamba, Luis Valdez's biopic of rock pioneer Ritchie Valens, comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Thai subtitles are accessible. Supplemental features include a biography of the cast and filmmakers and a theatrical trailer. The sound on the disc captures the rock & roll songs beautifully, making this disc interesting viewing for any fan of rock films.

Excellent performances by the entire cast allow this film to thrive, based on the true life story of singer Ritchie Valens. Widescreen with ample bonus material, including commentary. Recommended.

Excellent Movie
on May 10, 2008

Shirley Temple was absolutely adorable in this excellent picture about a young orphaned girl going to live with her estranged grandfather in the German mountains. Beautifully re-mastered in both its original black and white, with a colorized option as well, though I personally prefer black and white, as that is how the movie was filmed. Highly recommended!

Steven Spielberg's ambitious screen adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel about a young boy who finds himself in a Japanese prison camp during WWII gets an appropriately glossy treatment on DVD. The film has been given a letterboxed transfer of 1.85:1 aspect ratio (the transfer has also been enhanced for widescreen monitors), and viewers have a choice of the original soundtrack in Dolby Digital Stereo or a new mix in Dolby Digital 5.1 (there's also an alternate French-language soundtrack in Dolby Digital Stereo). The film has been subtitled in no fewer than eight languages -- English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai -- and the film's original theatrical trailer has been included, as well as a bonus behind-the-scenes documentary, "The China Odyssey: Empire of the Sun, A Film by Steven Spielberg."

Slow, But Interesting
on May 10, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I found 'Empire of the Sun' to be slow and somewhat boring, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is an interesting movie. I'm happy to have seen it and would recommend it to those who enjoy period pieces, especially of the World War II era. Widescreen, with an almost complete lack of bonus extras.

Well Done Movie, Expensive Criterion Dvd
on May 10, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
I thought 'The Last Emperor' was a well done film. It's not the type of movie I'd watch repeatedly, but for those who haven't seen it, I'd recommend doing so. As for this Criterion dvd set, it's loaded with everything a die-hard fan could want, but it's also quite expensive, so I'd only recommend purchasing this to those who consider this one of their all time favorites.

Steve Martin stars in the funny film noir dental thriller Novocaine. Artisan has put forth considerable effort on this 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Featuring bright colors and even black levels, this transfer looks very well rendered with only the slightest amount of edge enhancement marring the image. The audio is featured in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English. This is an excellent soundtrack sporting lots of directional effects and some funky music by Danny Elfman and Steve Bartek. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English and French. This is a very nice edition of Novocaine that includes a vast array of special features, starting with a commentary track by director David Atkins. Atkins has a working knowledge of the production and story and throws out many entertaining anecdotes about the film. Two features -- "Getting the Shot" and "Bitten" -- give the viewer a working knowledge of both the film's production and dental forensics. "Bitten" is an especially neat featurette that includes interviews with dental forensic specialists discussing how to snatch dental records off of a mutilated corpse. "Getting the Shot" is a by-the-numbers eight-miunte promo spot for the film. Finally there are five rather uninteresting deleted scenes, two theatrical trailers for the film, "The Music of Novocaine" music sampler, some thin production notes, bonus trailers for Artisan movies, and some information on the film's cast and crew.

Strange
on May 10, 2008

I'm really surprised Steve Martin took a role in this picture. I'm equally surprised that all the rest of the great cast took roles too, because it's a dark, weird, and twisted tale that I found completely unentertaining.
