I'm kind of surprised that Martin Scorsese won the Best Director Oscar and Best Picture Oscar for this movie, which was good, but not great. Scorsese has done far better work than this film, for which he didn't win any awards. Nice hd-dvd with plenty of bonus material here, for those who enjoyed the film.
This is literally the 4th or 5th time the Rambo Trilogy has been released on dvd. Now it's here on Blue-Ray, and while the price actually isn't that bad, I would only recommend purchasing it to those who don't already own it on standard dvd. How many times can people be expected to rebuy the same item?

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image in every frame.
Rob Marshall's Chicago gets the treatment one might expect for a Best Picture Oscar winner in the age of DVD on this release. The film is presented in a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon. They do offer insights into the making of the film, but mostly they heap praise onto the actors, the people who worked on the film, and each other. A deleted duet between Queen Latifah and Catherine Zeta-Jones, titled "Class," is a treat. Commentary is available for that sequence as well. A making-of documentary offers lots of rehearsal footage and interviews with the cast. This is a fine release for what it is, but a different edition of the film offers the same extras with a widescreen transfer of the film. That DVD is preferable to this one.

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratio of the movie from 1.85:1 to 1.33:1, presenting an image that is different than what was originally seen at theaters.

This was one film that was well marketed and I was excited to see. However, the movie didn't live up to its hype in my opinion and was rather bland, but some people may enjoy it. Widescreen with light bonus material.
Starring Gérard Depardieu and Katherine Heigl, the 1994 comedy My Father the Hero comes to DVD from Buena Vista. Presented with a widescreen anamorphic transfer enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions. Soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround in English as well as Dolby Digital Stereo in French. Spanish subtitles and English closed captions are also accessible. There are no special features of any kind on this disc.

Previews of 'My Father the Hero' did a fine job in selling the film, because they actually made it appear rather funny. Unfortunately, humorous scenes are few and far between, making the movie a disappointment to me. This movie could have been much better in my opinion, but fans should be pleased with this anamorphic widescreen dvd.
John Carpenter DVDs done right are a pure joy, as evidenced in Columbia TriStar's Special Edition of the car-gone-mad Stephen King classic Christine. This release sports a new commentary with the director and actor-turned-director star Keith Gordon, and it's safe to say that it does not disappoint. There are people who pull off good commentaries and then there are people like Carpenter, who have literally mastered the art with a healthy mix of wit, filmmaking lessons, and adept interviewing skills. Here, he and Gordon meet on similar terms as professional peers as they share fond stories of the production and their careers while making their way through a nearly 20-year-old picture. A whopping 20 deleted and alternate scenes have been included on the disc as well, with most adding good meat to the film and others that serve as a fine example of smart editing. The fun does not stop there, with three incredibly well-done featurettes on the film totaling over an hour's worth of new cast and crew interviews as well as exclusive behind-the-scene photos. Literally the only thing this edition is missing is the trailer, which most likely was tied up in legal issues with other companies at the time. The gorgeous anamorphic picture presents the film in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and its Dolby Surround audio track does a fine job with the dialogue, action, and Carpenter's score. This special edition is plenty worth it for fans of the film and those waiting for this solid of a DVD release.

This One Cracked Me Up

I never quite understood whether John Carpenter intended for 'Christine' to be scary or funny, but it's a lot of both and it makes for a very entertaining time. Based off a Stephen King piece, this movie is very similar in ways to the film 'Maximum Overdrive,' in which a bunch of Semi-trucks become possessed and begin driving themselves (also based on King's work). Great widescreen dvd release here, with a few nice bonus features, including several deleted scenes and commentary with director Carpenter and star Keith Gordon.
Harold Ramis' cloning comedy Multiplicity comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. One closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a Spanish, French, and second English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are available in all three of these languages as well. There are no real special features on this release, but the picture and the sound quality are very strong.

Inconsistent

'Multiplicity' isn't a poor movie, it's just inconsistent. Certain scenes are hilarious and work perfectly, others don't work at all. Kudos to Michael Keaton though, for the several excellent performances he gives. It seems the widescreen dvd version of the film has been discontinued, so if unable to track down a widescreen copy, fans will have to settle for this cropped Pan & Scan transfer.

Just like its predecessor, 'Young Guns II' isn't an overly impressive film, but it's just as fun to watch as the first, and once again, the great cast adds to the excitement. Recommended.
