Howard Deutch's follow-up to the successful Grumpy Old Men comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to reproduce the original theatrical aspect ratio. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are available in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials include production notes and a pair of theatrical trailers. This disc suffers from the lack of a widescreen image, but otherwise it is a serviceable release of a less than inspired comedy.

On Par With the First

Almost as funny as the original, this sequel to 'Grumpy Old Men' is sure to please those who liked the first film. Again, just like the first movie, the only setback to this dvd is that its full-screen only.
The Odd Couple's Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau re-team in Grumpy Old Men, which comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials are limited to a trailer and production notes. This is a substandard DVD that should have some more whistles and bells considering the film's status as a sleeper hit.

Really Funny

The laughs are non-stop in this movie whose title pretty much sums it all up. The only setback is the dvd is full-screen. Recommended!
Bill Cosby, one of the most popular and influential standup comics in history, takes center stage in the concert film Bill Cosby, Himself. Featuring routines about parenthood, childhood, and dentists, the film debuts on DVD sporting both a widescreen transfer that preserves the original aspect ratio and a full-screen version for those who wish to relive their experiences of watching the film on cable. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital Mono. The only extra is the film's original trailer, but this gem of a performance makes the DVD well worth viewing.

Bill Cosby gives one of the best live stand-up comedy performances I've ever seen here, what's even more impressive, is that he does it without using a single foul word. Highest recommendation! Widescreen and full-screen.
I like Bill Cosby, but I wasn't overly fond of 'Ghost Dad.' Still, the movie has its moments, and my favorite character is still the cab driver, who's just hilarious. Full-screen, no bonus.
Penny Marshall's baseball comedy A League of Their Own gets the special edition two-disc treatment on this release from Columbia/TriStar. The film is presented in a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, while the 1.33:1 image fills the entire TV frame, giving the film a cramped feel in which characters are often missing from the sides of the picture. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround 4.0, while a French soundtrack has been recorded as well. English subtitles are accessible. The disc contains a commentary track recorded by Marshall along with actresses Lori Petty, Tracy Reiner, and Megan Cavanagh. As with most commentaries recorded a decade or more after a film's initial release, the track has the feel of a high-school reunion. In this case that is a good thing, as all four women are good storytellers and offer plenty of humorous anecdotes about the making of the film. Marshall also discusses the struggle she had with the studio in making sure her vision got to the screen. This is an entertaining commentary that fits the mood of the film perfectly. A second disc offers an impressive 15 deleted scenes with introductions to each by Marshall, a nearly hour-long making-of documentary, filmographies of the stars, and the music video for Madonna's "This Used to Be My Playground." This disc is, pardon the obvious pun, a home run.

This Movie Was In a League of Its Own

Very rarely have I been so apalled with a film. Even Tom Hanks, one of my favorite actors, can do nothing to salvage this one. Skip it.
If you don't think Speed is the fastest-moving adventure film ever made, we challenge you to find a faster one. Keanu Reeves stars as an LA Bomb Squad specialist whose principal antagonist is elusive bomber-extortionist Dennis Hopper. Seeking vengeance after his latest ransom scheme is thwarted, Hopper presents a personal challenge to Reeves: A wired-for-destruction city bus, which will detonate if the speedometer drops below 50 MPH. Playing the reluctant civilian who is pressed into service as the bus' "substitute driver," leading lady Sandra Bullock became a major star in her own right. Once Speed gets to the meat of its story, the excitement never lets up--not even after the boobytrapped bus is out of the picture.

Fun But Campy

'Speed' is an adrenaline rush film that misses its mark in my opinion, mainly due to an overly 'campy' presentation. Fans should enjoy this dvd release though, which offers some quality bonus material including commentary.
Actor John Stockwell, who would go on to direct such films as Blue Crush, stars as a high-school slacker in this '80s sci-fi flick. In search of something to turn in as his science project, the young man digs through the junk at a military scrap yard and uncovers a device that sends his entire class though a time warp. The third DVD release of the film doesn't improve on the first two in the bonus material department, but it does offer an adequate version of the film itself with a widescreen anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital Sound. Spanish subtitles are also included.

'My Science Project' is actually a pretty bad movie, but I do enjoy watching it, so I guess I can't complain too much. Not everyone will enjoy this picture, but those who like it know who they are, and they'll be happy to know it's in widescreen, even though there's nothing in terms of extras.
Audiences just couldn't get enough of the adorable talking baby (voiced by Bruce Willis) in Look Whose Talking, and this time around the little guy gets a sister (voiced by Roseanne) in Columbia/Tri -Star Home Video's release of Look Who's Talking Too. Presented in both standard 1.33:1 pan-and-scan and 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, this release also offers closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Surround audio in addition to optional Spanish, French and Portuguese Dolby Digital Stereo audio selections. Also featuring optional English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai subtitles, extra features include bonus trailers and talent files.

More of the Same

This unnecessary sequel to the surprise hit 'Look Who's Talking,' is really just more of the same, only not as well done as the first. The same cast returns, only this time with 'Roseanne' voicing one of the infants, which is actually quite annoying.
It's infant matchmaker time in Columbia TriStar Home Video's release of Amy Heckerling's Look Who's Talking. Viewable in either 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen or 1.33:1 pan and scan, this disc offers audio rendered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround and French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English, Spanish and French subtitles. Extra features include a theatrical trailer.

Bruce Willis Does a Great Job

My favorite part of this movie is the superb job Bruce Willis does voicing-over the part of the young Mikey. Some great laughs here.
