David Fincher's serial killer thriller Seven was given a fabulous two-disc deluxe release a few years back. This single-disc edition offers an inexpensive way to acquire just the film without the extras that were loaded onto that previous edition. The film is presented here in a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital EX 5.1, DTS ES Surround Sound, and Stereo Surround Sound. English and French subtitles are accessible. Both the video and audio quality are excellent.

Tom Shadyac re-teams with Jim Carrey for the comedy Bruce Almighty. The initial DVD release of the film offers a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, while Spanish and French soundtracks have been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. Spanish and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a making-of featurette and over a dozen deleted scenes. This is a fine release from Universal Studios.

New Line produces some of the best discs available. The picture quality, for starters, is outstanding. It is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and is anamorphic. There are a few moments of aliasing, but they are kept to a minimum. The sound, while not nearly as impressive, is still quite good. This disc has both a Dolby Digital 5.1 and 4.0 surround track. The soundtrack is basically dialogue-driven, so one would not expect to see a wide use of the surrounds. What does come into effect is the subwoofer, due to all the bass from the hip-hop soundtrack. The disc has the usual trailer and filmographies of the cast and crew. It also has two audio commentary tracks, one from the director, producer, composer, and star Giovanni Ribisi, and the other, in the way of an isolated music track, from the composer, a woman named the Angel. Both tracks have some great information about making this film and how the elements came together. The track with the Angel is unconventional; it is presented with her words layered at times on top of other sentences. Next there are four deleted scenes and an alternate ending. In addition, this disc has a few DVD-ROM features. The disc is rounded off by additional trailers that are hidden in the filmography section. These are for two other New Line films, Friday and Love Jones.

as someone who has worked in tele-sales, this movie is RIGHT on target. if you watch how things are "on the floor", that's what most tele-sales people go through. ribsi's performance was very good but i think he always looks nervous.

If any movie was made for DVD, XXX, a video game disguised as a film, is the one. And what a DVD! Though it could easily have been a two-disc set, Columbia Pictures opted for a single platter, but loaded it up. To begin with is an exceptional 40-minute documentary called "A Filmmaker's Diary," covering everything from pre- to post-production. Beyond this are three more featurettes on the vehicles, Vin Diesel, and the world of XXX. The final featurette is a pathetic promotional piece for Pontiac's GTO. This is nothing more than a commercial for their upcoming car and has little to do with the movie. Along with that is a brief section on some visual effects for the avalanche scene. The shots are silent so the optional commentary by Joel Hynek of Digital Domain is almost necessary. In addition are ten deleted scenes with optional director's commentary, a music video from Gavin Rossdale for "Adrenaline," some filmographies, and the theatrical trailer for this film, plus trailers for Anger Management and Darkness Falls. If that wasn't enough, director Rob Cohen provides a scene-specific commentary that is really interesting and never dull. While the supplements are outstanding, the image and sound equal them in every way. Possibly even better than the image is the sound. The 5.1 Dolby Digital track (a DTS would have equally rocked, but isn't offered) is loud, loud, and loud. Dialogue is surprising not obscured, but this track is alive throughout the film. Surrounds are aggressive and used at just the right moments for wonderful effect. Finally, the image is framed at 2.35:1 and, of course, anamorphic. A pan and scan version is available separately, but with this type of film, any cut in picture size would ruin the effect. It's reference quality all the way. Detail is solid, and the darker scenes show no sign of breakdown. Would anything less be expected anymore? Certainly not. Colors are equally strong, with a subdued saturation that mimics the theatrical print perfectly. The critics tended to hate this film, but if you want action, and you want an exceptional DVD to go along with it, go no further than XXX.
