Wolfmother: Bang for your Buck
on July 9, 2008

The 2006 self-titled debut album Wolfmother was a welcome addition to the musical scene. Where other bands merely reflect the 70's, this band is an homage to its roots and those which have gone before. Imagine this: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, and Rush had a baby. Wolfmother would be their child. Sprinkle in some DNA from Led Zeppelin, ELP, Yes, Thin Lizzy, Jethro Tull, The Who, Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper; Wolfmother suckles from the teat of the power pop/rock muscle bands of another musical era. As the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith still do boffo box office business and cd sales, Wolfmother opens the new generation up to the lasting possibilities of 70's rock to those who were not there when we were. The band's garage rock sound will make your speakers happy they got to hear this band, too. Lyrics with universal early-70's themes are common in every number. This band is very precise in its instrumentation and its sound. The band is tight, and we can hear it. Each song is a club staple and we can almost feel the sweat dripping from the pores of the band. The sound is so raw, so energetic, so furious at times it spills into this century like a welcome time capsule with a twist. If the only song you've heard from Wolfmother is its single Woman, the time is now to get back and party with a spirited, confident power trio. I've got a feeling their sophomore effort will not be a letdown. Meet Wolfmother, the future of the past.
What's great about it: creative, its 70's roots, confident rock band, listenable
What's not so great: heavy mix seems somewhat sloppy at times

Time in a Bottle, Indeed

Timeless Stories of the 70's Singer/Songwriter is one of several new soncept discs from Rolling Stone Magazine. The disc covers the decade nicely, and has many classic songs we've heard on radio for almost 40 years now, and even some terrific FM staples from the time period. Who would have thought of including Joan Armatrading and John Prine with Harry Chapin and Van Morrison, whose Brown Eyed Girl opens the set. A basic choice to say the least, but it sets up the theme of the disc well. The disc omits some greats (John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens to name a few) whose catalogues are widely known, and that is understandable. However, the inclusion of Dan Fogelberg and Ricki Lee Jones hurt the flow and makes me wonder how the choices were made. That is a mute point when you consider the other choices on this album, which are a joy to listen to without interruption or interference from your teenagers. The final 2 songs from Arlo Guthrie and Don McClean close out the set on a high note, and complete the nostalgic cycle. And isn't that what it's all about: nostalgia? Reintroducing our generation to our past by our favorite rock and roll magazine, this entire series seems timely and well thought-out. It's a journey back into our past, and acts as an audio history of our youth.
What's great about it: very good song selections; nice musical flow and good sound
What's not so great: a couple of weak song choices

I am new to muse. I first heard "Knight's of Cydonia" while playing guitar hero... once I was able to, that is. I woke up to the radio one morning and found out that it was them who sang "Starlight". After hearing these two fantastic songs, I made it my mission to find out more. When I picked up their CD, I was blown away by what was on it. This song has a driving force to it that not many other CD's contain. His vocals are superb and seem almost U2'ish presented in a Queen'ish style. It may sound a little like those two bands but they are a band all their own. Their style is unique with the instrumentals that they use and their lyrics, which can be bizarre at times. The songs are great for entertaining because of the constant instrumental sounds and melodic vocals that are easy to find the beat and dance to. After browsing their past records on various sites, this one stands out the most as the one I personally like best. I do enjoy their other songs from previous CD's and will probably buy them eventually, but for the time being, this one has really struck a chord with me and I would highly recommend it, it'll be like a revelation to you.
What's great about it: Great Driving Album - Good For Parties & Dance (Lyrical & Melodic)
What's not so great: My terrible pun =D

Clever Mraz Does It Again
on July 3, 2008

Jason Mraz always astounds me with each and every one of his albums. He constantly changes vocal styles covering many different genres, even in one song at times. This album meets the high standards he's set so long ago with is first release, if not exceeding it. He has guest singers in two of his songs which are both excellent. His lyrics are always interesting and witty. When other people just sing to rhyme, Mraz mixes it up and just sings about what gets his meaning across. With a very high range in vocals, Mraz doesn't only get his point across, but he does it in melodic ways only imaginable from Mraz.

The Family Guy's maniacal baby genius takes an outrageous journey of self-discovery in this feature-length adventure that follows little Stewie on a cross-country search to find the man he believes is his true father. One day, while sitting in front of the television pondering his latest plot for world domination, Stewie is shocked to see a man with whom he bears an uncanny resemblance. Now wholeheartedly convinced that his biological father is the man he spotted on television, Stewie hits the road in search of his past.

Good Movie

This Family Guy Movie is basically their TV show, just with a running time of 88 minutes. The movie doesn't stretch too far from the show because you still have the plot changes thrown in. With minimal "remember that time when" cutscenes, the movie was more fun to watch than the series. It made jokes without going too far whihc is what it should do more often. This movie is a fun way to kick back and laugh. If you're a fan of the seires, then this is an easy choice to make.

Not Entirely Legend Worthy
on July 1, 2008

Throughout the film, Will Smith does an excellent job acting. He makes it so that we actually care about him as a character. The set location was done great. It looked just like the city dropped everything they were doing and just got up and left, which was basically the point. The supposed mutants looked OK. They weren't taken overboard and we could establish that they were once civilized humans by the way they look. However, after a while, they just became freaks. Somehow the transformation gave them more abilities than Olympic athletes. The plot started to get lame when his world seems hopeless. Just as the average movie cliche does every time, the babe shows up in the knick of time and saves him at the last possible second... yawn - seen it too much before. The plot got sort of twisted at the end. When we find that the "head" mutant was just after another mutant he cared about, they lose their whole 'nothing but instincts' feel. Anyway, it was a fair tribute to the original novel but didn't quite hit the best shot. If you want to really understand this film, or what it tried to be, then watch 'The Omega Man.' After seeing that film, this one isn't as bad as I originally thought, it just took a creative direction that may seem unusual or strange to some.
This movie also goes to show that you don't need to cast living people to make the movie good. To me, the Manikins were perfect and were more funny by themselves than some comedians i've seen.
What's great about it: Good Acting - Set Design - Mutants?
What's not so great: Too Much CG - Kind of Corny At Times

World War II changed lives, changed countries and changed history. The Normandy Breakout Campaign was the most intense and dangerous action of the entire conflict, as young soldiers from America, Britain, Canada and Poland struggled with the fear and fatal force of the Nazi army. It was a time when the world held its breath as tyranny was confronted. Bravery was tested, tactical expertise meant the difference between life and death, and battle was often up close and personal. Bold heroes were needed as Europe fell under the shadow of death. Step back into that world, if you dare, and see how you would perform in this time of crisis. The Germans are marching toward world domination — will you step up and stop this assault against the free world? Will you answer the Call of Duty?Call of Duty 3 thrusts you into the thrilling landscape of the second World War. This latest addition to the popular Call of Duty franchise features all-new close-quarters combat, environmental physics and a host of ways for you to take down your enemies. Vivid graphics immerse you into a realistic world, where special tactics must be employed against your enemy if you expect to forge a path to victory. Intense, team-based multiplayer options offer multiple-occupancy vehicle combat, so climb aboard a tank or Jeep with your friends and team up to take down the Nazi forces once and for all.

Great Game

This game is great for the online player. The battles are huge and a lot of fun. A lot of people see this game and go "yuck, Treyarch sucks" but this game isn't bad. The maps are intricate and fun. They're big and provide a lot of cover, which you can sometimes blend in with. There's a map online that is pretty much a jungle with bushes and trees and trenches everywhere. Basically, a sniper's haven. Unlike COD4, you have the ability to use specials depending on what class you are. If you're a sniper and you're doing well, then you can call in an airstrike wheras if you're a medic, you can leap in the line of fire and revive your fallen buddy. This is the best WWII game to date and, in my opinion, has a lot of distinctive characteristics that surpass COD4, not to mention that vehicles are available in this one. The campaign mode is fun and takes you all over.
What's great about it: Blending Scenery - Combat - Abilities
What's not so great: Unusual Vehicle Viewpoint

Best Heist I've Seen

This has to be my favorite robbery movie I have seen so far. Its a clever thrill ride of bangs, booms, and zipping minis. Not only does the movie look good, it actually has sound physics applied to the stunts they pull. For an older movie put to blu-ray, this one still looks great on any TV.
What's great about it: Fast Paced - Visually Pleasing in HD
What's not so great: Romancy Aspect to Film

Rumble Returns
on June 21, 2008

When the controller begins to shake, that just makes the experience so much better. The vibration function is impressive, a little more advanced than Dualshock2 for PS2. The price is a tad dissapointing though. Compared to the SIXAXIS alone, this costs more and only contains half of the battery life because it uses more juice. But, the price is worth it. How many PS3 games actually utilize the SIXAXIS feature? Oh well, now you can vibrate while you use the feature. I'd say its well worth the money. Its more durable than the regular controller and it just seems more fun to use. Any gaming experienced is greatly enhanced using this item. Get it, it's worth it.
