Small Stand Stands Tall

This is a very nice stand for the price. With a slick black, open, modern design, it fits in anywhere with that has a contemporary look. The adjustable glass shelf is great. I can set it to its max height and snugly fit in my DVD player with plenty space below for a DVD/CD rack. The black is appealing but tends to show off the dust more than I'd like it too. Same goes for the glass. But not much dust even shows because of my big 'ol tube television sitting on top pretty much covers the whole area. But I'm glad that the stand can at least support it's weight. It is slightly curved on its sides which generally makes it more suitable for a corner area which I would prefer if I had the room, but it still looks great where it is. It was easy to put together, but then again, for some people it may prove difficult. I purchase a lot of things that require assembly so I'm really not one to make that assumption. For a small bit of wood and glass, this stand tends to stand out in the room. When it's all complete with everything on, it looks great and it's sturdier than a lot of fancier stands, which this one happens to be replacing (I'll spare the details). To me, this stand just stood out from the rest and continues to impress me. I couldn't have been happier with the decision I made to get this product. If you're looking for a stand, this is all you'll need to spend for a long-lasting, good-looking, quality piece of furniture!

What's not so great: Small Slit In Rear For Cords, Could Be Larger

The current trend of spoofing actual Japanese game shows on American TV is a long time coming. If you are reading this, you already know what MXC is about. But how is volume 3? Volume 3 contains 13 episodes, but not much else. As far as special features go, there are basically none. A first time viewer beginning with volume 3 would have very little understanding of the actual nature of the Japanese show. If you want background, you have to go to seasons 1 & 2.
One aspect of this entire volume is the double entendre, or constant dirty jokes and references to human anatomy. At times, the jokes can seem outright cruel.
Anyway... the episodes are a guilty pleasure, and I'm glad to have it in my collection.
What's great about it: Full Episodes - Looks Good - Sounds Good; Better Than On TV
What's not so great: Not A Full Season

Squeaky Clean

I can't stand it when I see people using the same brush for years. I get these packs for replacement heads for every 2-3 months, when I feel it's appropriate to replace my old bristles. For a 4 pack, with each one lasting 2-3 months, I'm pretty much set for the year. Great value too. If you think about it... this is the only part of the brush you should really care about because it's the only thing cleaning your mouth. For the price compared to the whole set (handle part), this is a good buy. By replacing old brush heads with new replacement heads, you'll keep your teeth white and squeaky clean! Choose Oral-B for the Best Oral care around!

Mid Range Antenna - Talking Quality
on July 21, 2008

I bought this antenna hoping for something that would work well in a closed indoor environment away from the windows. At first, it worked okay but now the quality seems to be dipping. I turned up the gain boost or whatever that knob is and it came in a little better, but it demands constant readjustment. When the picture comes in, it's clear and perfect; compares to cable. But what threw me was the fact that it worked better when I hooked it up to my computer rather than my TV... Shouldn't be anything wrong with my TV, it's a year old, nice flatscreen from RCA as well and that is a quality tube right there. It just goes to show that even though a brand might have really done something well, that doesn't mean they're cut out for the other departments. Overall, not a bad antenna. I don't watch much TV, but when I do, the major networks come in super clear. If you want more than that though (not counting the crystal clear religious channels, which I get 3 of), then you probably should invest in some quality, reliable rabbit ear antennas.

Everybody Hurts Sometimes

American IV: The Man Comes Around is a must for any music collection. This is the swansong for Johnny Cash, and it couldn't be better. As a child weened on radio in the '60s and '70s, I couldn't have been distanced further from the Sun Recordings and the countless songs he recorded for Columbia. To me, he was the man in black on TV who sang the fun 'A Boy Named Sue'. Maturity yields awareness and more openness. Coming into JC later than sooner, he was a welcome musical discovery. And after one listen to American IV, produced by Rick Rubin, I know why I fell in love with music in the first place. Johnny's voice sounds his age. It crackles at times, but rarely. The low notes are still there. Of the 15 tracks, Cash wrote 3 of the songs, and arranged another three. This album is a songbook of superb material, covering The Smashing Pumpkins 'Hurt', Paul Simon's 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters', and The Beatles' 'In My Life', which Cash sings like they were his all the while. Themes of loss, redemption, fear, salvation, and coming to terms with oneself at the end of one's life are everywhere. It reads like a musical confessional to his maker. Rubin's spare production style allows the voice to be more than a familiar friend, it is its own instrument. Each note from the piano is like a hushed choirboy encouraging the vocal and guitar. Just listen to the title track and the four that follow it--the quartet seems to have its own story arc, like a film, replete with biblical allegory to drive the point home. He duets with Don Henley on 'Desperado', and with Fiona Apple on Paul Simon's song. There is a cover of 'Danny Boy' and Hank Williams' 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry'. He is backed by a couple of Tom Petty's bandmates and other wonderful musicians. The whole family comes out to perform on the album's closer, 'We'll Meet Again'. The emotional impact of that final song is both ironic and elegaic, Dylan-esque in its introspective best. As Cash writes in the liner notes: "The fifteen songs in this album take fifteen different directions." And there are no detours.
What's great about it: excellent production, surprising song choices, vocals
What's not so great: none--not enough songs

Bland Mix o' 70s Hits

"Are you ready Steve? Andy? Alright fellas, let's go!" The opening line to Sweet's Ballroom Blitz was a standard on AM and FM radio stations in the mid-'70s. If you are looking for a compilation album of some of the better songs of the era you will likely be disappointed here. To say the least, the variety of songs and genres is interesting, especially a compilation disc which hopes to capture Top 40 hits of the decade. But choose a genre and stick with it. Don't cram disco (ugh!) in with Rick Derringer and Badfinger. One-hit wonders abound on this disc, and I can understand why: they are easier to locate in one consolidated disc than search all over Rhapsody for it. Yes, most of these songs are good choices. However, they don't belong together in this package. Recording company execs, we all know that compact disc sales are on the decline. The licensing for some of these songs must be easier than trying to throw in Wings, The Who, or Rolling Stones. I can understand that. Have the compilation assortments make sense thematically and musically. This disc does neither. As the song goes, "If you wanna get to heaven, you gotta raise a little ..."
What's great about it: plenty of songs which cover the decade
What's not so great: song choices and their sequencing

Give Dexter a Hand...and a Foot and a...
on July 19, 2008

Read the reviews with all the clichés: a cut above the rest, a killer set, blood 101, etc. Dexter is more than that. This Showtime series is an extension of the vigilante-turned-judge and executioner and takes it to a new level. Dexter is fascinated with blood. In flashbacks, we learn that he has had an obsession with blood and death and has restrained the ability to hold back his instinct to kill. His foster father is a cop who recognizes that and doesn't truly discourage him, but helps him control the impulses which Dexter doesn't understand control his life. We always know what is on Dexter's mind. In voiceover (like The Wonder Years) he opens his mind and lets the audience in on his urges and emotions (if he has any of those). All of the characteristics that make us human are missing from his adult life as a blood analyst for a California CSI. His sister is also on the force. She has no idea of her brother's "hobby". Like Monk, Dexter is a little more obsessive-compulsive about his instincts and abilities. And this is where the series finds its target. When Dexter comes across untold cruelty by a killer(s), he kidnaps the murderer and then methodically murders them, bags up the parts and drops them into the ocean. Vengeance is sweet to Dexter and educational too. Before the carefully planned act of destruction is carried out on a killer, he needs to understand them in order to understand himself. Good acting, good writing, the blackhumor of Six Feet Under, and wonderful storytelling are what make this series click. This isn't Dirty Harry or Death Wish or CSI with a twist; it is an entertaining series of a man who understands that what he is doing is wrong, can't control it or speak to anyone about it, with a vacancy sign on his soul where his emotions should be. See Dexter. See Dexter hide souvenir glass slides containing a drop of his victim's blood on it into his air conditioner. He keeps them cold, like himself. Maybe that is why the neighbors of real-life serial killers always tell the news reporters, "He is such a nice guy. We had no idea. He was so quiet and kept to himself." Dexter is the psyche of the anti-hero in today's world of twisted entertainment. A catharsis we all need.

Two Thumbs WAY Up!
on July 18, 2008

This film is absolutely fantastic. It resembles the two best war films of all time: Saving Private Ryan and the HBO series Band of Brothers. Tae Guk Gi is a cinematic marvel. With a background of numerous awards in the Sundance Film Festival, this movie hit the shelves and I couldn't resist picking it up. It opens with a strong resemblance to Letters from Iwojima by beginning in the present and then reflecting on the past, which is what the movie is. The plot, a shoemaker and his younger brother having been drafted into the South Korean militia soon find themselves on the front line. The older of the brothers, Jin-tae, strikes up a deal with the commander of his battalion that they send home his younger brother, Jin-seok, if he demonstrates exemplory effort for the cause. His whole goal is to get his brother as far away from the fighting as possible. His motivation is that if one should die, then at least one must live. But soon after the movie kicks into gear, Jin-tae's main goals become warped as he soon takes pride in what he does. He now enjoys the battle scene and takes on high risk missions, not for the medal he requires to send his brother home, but for sheer glory and promotions that follow his actions. Watching this movie, we see well rounded characters and become much attached to them as we see them advance through the Korean War. After a while, aid from the U.S. is provided and we see significant progress in the overall goal of accomplishing Jin-tae's objective of getting his brother home safe. However, his methods by which he attempts to achieve the goal become disastrous to himself and everyone he cares about. It isn't until the end of the movie that we can see how pure his true desires of sending Jin-seok home were.
This film is subbed, not dubbed. There are English translations in text at the bottom of the screen. By not dubbing English over the Korean dialogue, this movie maintains its true purpose as a Korean film. For a two and a half hour movie, you have to be motivated to sit down and read this. Cinematic brilliance was created and presented to us through Sundance. Like no film has done before, "Tae Guk Gi is a searing look at the Korean War" through which the American people can finally see. This isn't a pretty battle, nor is it glorious. TAE GUK GI tells the war as it was, and how it affected real people at the time.
This shouldn't have only gone up for Sundance. With a movie as good as this, an Oscar Nomination would seem to have been a good move compared to what else is out there in the foreign film department nowadays. If you see this on the shelf, pick it up and sit down for one heck of a movie that, I can guarantee, will blow you away. Once you've seen this, it instantly becomes a timeless classic.

Crud Buds
on July 13, 2008

I loathe these ear buds with every ounce of my being. I got these as the stock earbuds when I purchased an iPod Nano and I INSTANTLY chose another pair. I've used these a total of two times and couldn't have been more turned away from them. They hurt, they tangle, and they break. Sure they look sleek and fit real nice on the iPod, but they are terrible. I put these in once when I first got them, and heard a crackling noise right when I played my first songs and that was right out of the box! I replaced these with a cheap pair of Sony Earbuds that go around the ear. Needless to say, they were 35 bucks cheaper and loads better. My dog ate that set so I was stuck with these for another day before I could replace them and found that my left bud was broken! I've only used these once before! Not to mention that my ear canal hurts terribly since using these things. You practically have to shove them in as far as they can go before you have it so they won't fall out, which they do frequently. If you get these earbuds as stock headphones with your iPod then that's fine, but if you want to spend money on a second set of headphones, don't waste it on these.
What's great about it: Match iPod - Small Connector
What's not so great: Painful - Bad Sound - Dies Fast - Tangles

Best of the Battlefronts
on July 10, 2008

This game is a perfect example of how to create a superb sequel game. Battlefront II exceeds the expectations of what the first game laid down. We revisit old maps like the classic Hoth board and take on new ones as well, like the Wookie homeworld. Also, you can combat in space around two giant ships pulling out maneuvers like backflips, barrel rolls, and 180 turns. Man the guns, join a boarding party, or just take the wheel, the space battles leave limitless options for any style of gameplay. Battlefront II also utilizes a ranking feature where you can work up to become Legendary in a selected field. By achieving this rank, you recieve upgraded weapons like a stronger Beam Rifle for the marksman or Remote Guided Rockets for the demolition crew. The fight on the ground takes over a new look. The graphics are enchanced and the bots are also smarter. If you're good enough, you can command a certain number of teammates to do as you wish, whether it be to follow you or advance into the battle. The shooting aspect of this game is well done too. The HUD is easy to read and easy to understand. If you want, you can enable Heros to enter the game through the options menu before you start the game. This option allows a certain character to join your team, and depending how you're doing, you may play them as well. From Yoda to Chewie and Darth to Han, there are many more guest appearances throughout the game. The campaign is great and is interesting as well. This game is a smart purchase for any Star Wars fanatic and is also a smart choice to anyone new to the franchise. This game hits all the right points and earns itself 5 stars hands down. This game is simply fantastic and can be enjoyed by all.
What's great about it: Stats/Rankings - Graphics - Jedi Option - Maps - Space Battles
What's not so great: Speeders Explode Easily
