Pretty good; mic could be better
on April 23, 2023
Posted by: Vespasian
For the most part, this is an excellent headset. It's comfortable, produces excellent volume range, and is easy to operate and connect.
This is as close to plug-and-play as you can get. Extremely easy setup and excellent, strong Bluetooth connectivity. I connected to both my phone (Android) and computer, and the pairing process was effortless. I've had much more trouble with fiddly wireless earbuds than this headset. Strongly recommended for someone who wants an over-the-ear set that just *works.*
Volume was robust and reproduced a lot in the audio range. These aren't studio headphones, so there is going to be a degree of compression and high+ and low- end loss, but audio quality is on the whole fantastic.
The only minor gripe is the quality of the built-in mic. Obviously, since the mic isn't on an arm near your mouth, it's not going to pick up your voice as clearly as a headset with a dedicated mic arm. It seems, however, that Sony tried to compensate by boosting the pickup range of the audio. This headset mic will pick up stuff around you and broadcast it to everyone, and your voice won't sound as clear as it would on a headset oriented more towards voice chat use. Still, it works well given these limitations, and it's not as though anyone listening on a call won't be able to hear you.
Strongly recommended as a wireless, over the ear headset.

Pretty powerful room fan
on April 14, 2023
Posted by: Vespasian
The max settings on this fan are extremely impressive. Almost too impressive. There are three speed or intensity settings to choose from, but the highest is really, really powerful. This fan has come in extremely handy during this recent April heatwave. The range of motion when the fan rotates is more than adequate and comparable to other devices in its class. It's also extremely easy to adjust fan height once everything is put together; just loosen one component and then tighten again. You can also adjust the vertical orientation of the fan head with a simple push. The fan will lock and place and not lose its position as it rotates. The base is sturdy, too, and is weighted in a way that will keep the fan from tipping.
Setup and assembly is also extremely easy. The plastic construction of the parts doesn't inspire confidence right out of the box, but this fan operates really well once everything is put together. I wasn't familiar with this manufacturer before using this unit, but I'm definitely going to give their products a closer look in the future.
All in all, I'm pretty impressed with this. I've never had a fan on max settings that was so powerful that it actually caused my wife's door-mounted mirror to start lifting off its hinges before!

Fantastic laptop with okay features
on March 26, 2023
Posted by: Vespasian
As a laptop, this machine is fantastic. Solid construction, gorgeous screen, and ultra-fast i7 speeds all make for an excellent user experience. The physical construction is really a step above. Normally, even with an aluminum frame, these "360" laptops simply feel too brittle to use effectively in things like tent mode, but the GalaxyBook3 is an exception. You *can* use this in tablet or tent mode with no worries. The keyboard layout, with numberpad, is great for business use and the keys, despite seeming a bit shallow, can take my inept hammer typing with ease. Audio output is average to above average, but good enough to not feel like a strike against the device. This display is predictably excellent and with bright, popping colors that actually don't seem too saturated. I personally found battery life to be okay. It's not as great as you would get with some other laptops, but it's considerably better than my company-issued machine is. Be warned, though - the fast charging brick gets hot!
Performance is excellent. The default RAM configuration and i7 provides more than enough horsepower for 95% of users. Gamers might want to look elsewhere, given that the device is only sporting Iris graphics, but the vast majority of users will have a top-tier experience that will last you well into the future.
The included, uniquely Samsung features, however, are where things get a bit iffy. To be clear, these work really well, but since they really require a paired Samsung smartphone, they're not necessarily system sellers. Going over each:
Quick Share - works well and quickly, but since most of us have been trained by this point to bounce documents and files off of online storage services or email attachments, there's not really much additional benefit found here. Quick Share, once you've paired your device and linked your Samsung account, is a fast and tidy way of sharing files, but again, this is only really going to impact people who already use Samsung phones. To put in another way, you're not really missing out on much if you're an Apple user and you're interested in this machine, which in a roundabout way is a plus for the computer. If you do use a Samsung phone, however, it's a nice extra. Given that we have to live in a world where our jobs (or schools) insist on us using something like Microsoft Teams, even where you can transfer photos and files pretty quickly and conveniently, you'll still more than likely be using some other service to do the same job.
Multi-Screen: okay, this feature is actually pretty awesome. If you need or really benefit from having two desktop screens, this feature will actually impress you. Beyond being able to control your tablet with your laptop controls, Multi Screen makes expanding your virtual workspace both easy and beneficial. You can an MS Office window in full view and actually manipulate while having to observe your coworkers' faces and posts over Teams and Zoom meetings. Students can easily keep a digital book open and scroll through it while attending class (I'm not going to say anything about doing this while taking an online test). There are scores of practical applications to this, and the implementation is smooth and painless. Multi Screen completely obviates the need for a second portable display or multiple tabs running in a browser window. In short, it's pretty impressive. BUT to get the maximum benefit from it, you need a Galaxy tab. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since Galaxy tabs are pretty impressive in their own right (best Android tabs on the market), but it's a real shame that this feature kind of binds you to the Samsung ecosystem if you use a different manufacturer's tablet. This is the real feature that people who are interested in this laptop who aren't daily Samsung users will miss out on.
Private Share: This works well enough with a paired phone, and is certainly better than sharing files over potentially unsafe email attachments or online storage lockers, but this really only provides an additional layer of personal security for either 1) the kinds of things that there are better ways to protect (i.e. sensitive files like tax forms and encryption) 2) personal items that arguably don't need an additional layer of protection, like family photos and videos. Yes, the user experience is pretty easy and seamless, but you frankly shouldn't be sharing some kinds of documents with your phone in the first place. This does provide an excellent means for securely dumping really sensitive things you may accumulate on your phone (say something you received in an email attachment), but again it's arguable you shouldn't really be toting around extremely sensitive info on your phone in the first place. In short, Private Share does provide a pretty nifty and easy way to shuttle files back and forth between your phone and computer, but the usability of this feature is going to depend on your comfort level with keeping sensitive content on your phone.
Perhaps the greatest thing about the Samsung feature suite, and this can't be stressed enough, is that it's unobtrusive. Instead of mucking up regular use of the OS or constantly nagging you with pop-up windows, these features sit in their own little box on your Windows taskbar and wait to be used until needed. They absolutely won't get in the way of your work, and their "in the background" implementation is perhaps their primary strength. Viewed this way, as a set of extras that augment your laptop experience if you need them, the feature set included with the GalaxyBook is an excellent perk for those who already use Samsung devices, but not something everyone else needs to worry about missing out on (Except for Multi Screen).
In short, this is well-crafted, light, sturdy laptop with hardware that should last you years and is strongly recommended for anyone who needs a business laptop upgrade or who needs a reliable and powerful computer that will carry them through undergrad (or graduate school). An excellent computer, but not one you should necessarily purchase simply because of it's included features. This is okay, though, since the core machine and user experience is simply fantastic.

Get this phone
on October 22, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
This is really the best option for those of us who want a top-tier Android phone that can handle every business- and personal-use task you throw at it, and it takes magnificent photos as well.
The phone has a premium design and is the perfect size for one-handed use with a generous and ample display. I've gotten hooked on bigger screen sizes coming from Motorola phones, but I had no trouble with the Pixel's comparatively smaller display, and loved the fact that for once my pocket wasn't bursting with a giant brick stuffed into it. I think the size is just right. The camera bar on the back protrudes out a bit and will pick up pocket lint, but you pretty much need a case anyway since the phone back is a bit slippery. The Pixel really feels like a much more expensive device, though, and uses excellent materials.
The phone is fast. Really fast. I was kind of surprised how many apps and tabs I could keep open without any noticeable lag. I don't do cell phone gaming as much, so I can't speak to that, but every work-related task I needed to do came off flawlessly. This could be marketed as a business phone easily.
The screen is quite nice, too. The higher refresh rate means things move along really smoothly with great fluidity. The screen is OLED and can reach almost painful levels of brightness, so I had no trouble reading the display outside in sunlight. Colors on the display are bright and vibrant without having that "radioactive" feel that super-saturated colors leave me with.
The camera is one of the best I've ever used. It takes excellent shots and has a boatload of features that are both practically useful and fun to use. Night sight is amazing. It's fun deleting background objects and seeing how the results turn up. But best of all - this is the best "point and shoot" camera experience you can hope to find. You don't need to fiddle with sliders and settings to extract decent photos; you just frame the image on your phone display, hit the shutter, and get a picture that impresses you with it's professional quality. This is a godsend for people like me. I've struggled.to refine camera software settings for years on other models, and now all I have to do is literally point and shoot. Get this device if you want to seem like an amazing photographer with no effort.
Battery life is great as well. I never ended a day with less than 30% on the battery, and that was after heavy use. With more moderate use I could probably coast two days or so. You won't find anything to object to with this phone's battery life. One thing, though - no charger is included! Why?!
Call quality is great as well, but I will say that on occasion the phone cut off a call prematurely. This was not a regular thing and I'm hoping this will be fixed in a software update. WiFi and 5G reception was great, and had no trouble retaining a connection to the Internet.
The phone ran hot for this first day and a half, and I was originally going to stress this as a word of warning for potential buyers, but after two days the phone cooled down significantly and hasn't exhibited any heat spikes during use. I'm guessing the downloading and updating process took it's toll early on. I can testify that once setup is out of the way, you shouldn't have an issue with the phone getting hot.
All in all, an excellent device and strongly recommended to anyone who prefers Android. A truly great phone

This requires some patience...
on October 14, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
If you're looking for plug and play simplicity, you may be disappointed. To get the most out of this mic, you really need to spend some time with the Razer Synapse software.
Out of the box, the mic is nice and comes with an excellent, sturdy stand. This is a bit ironic, though, since to get the best reception you really want to be close to this mic (or hold it in your hand). The default settings do a good job of filtering out background noise, but even more than a foot away and your voice will start sounding faint. There's an excellent gain range for the mic, though, easily accessible via the front knob.
To get the most out of this device, you really need to use the Synapse software. In the software you can make really granular adjustments to various volumes from input sources and can maximize speech volume and output, but be warned: expect to spend some time in setup. There is a huge amount of options and a lot of testing necessary to create an optimal audio feed. If you want to use this mic, be prepared to set aside some time configuring your settings.
One really great feature with this mic that should be highlighted is the analogue gain limiter. This was extremely effective at eliminating popping and clipping caused by spikes in volume. I was really impressed in how this feature smoothed out sudden volume spikes in my speech.
If you are going to use this for audio recording, some time spent with the settings in Synapse will yield great results. If you want to use this for streaming, the same patience with the software is required, but since you'll be doing multiple things at once you might want to pick up a boom as well.
All in all, a pretty good mic option for recording of you're prepared to spend some time tweaking your settings.

Excellent Intro to Google TV
on October 3, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
This is the perfect, low-cost intro to Google TV, much like competing manufacturers' sticks and "express" devices. Really, the name is misleading - this is much more of a dedicated streaming device than Chromecasts of old, with a dedicated OS, included remote (with voice search), and functionality similar to other streaming devices.
Output is limited to 1080p, but you can get a step-up model that outputs at 4K for not much more.
The key benefit is the streaming interface, which is excellent. All major streaming apps are compatible and available, and the interface is easy and painless to navigate. And you can just use your Google account; no separate account needed.
The device isn't as fast as more expensive streaming boxes, but I had no serious problems with lag or reception. Some apps just took a second or two longer to load.
I couldn't get the device to reliably receive enough power off of the TV's USB port, but an inexpensive AC adaptor brick attached to the included USB cable quickly fixed the problem. You might have better luck getting power over USB.
The device is small and discreet, and hangs out of the way without being a nuisance. Hanging away from the TV is a huge plus; devices that plug directly in to an HDMI port and stick out (pun intended) have overheating and signal receptivity issues. Some distance between the streaming dongle and the TV is a good thing.
All in all, highly recommended as either a backup streaming device or a second streamer for your non-main TV. Whether you pick up this one or the 4K upgrade, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent quality and environmentally friendly
on September 3, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
Fantastic quality as always from SanDisk. I didn't get as much the advertised 100 MB read speeds, but the drive is sufficiently speedy and backwards compatible with USB 2.0. In most practical uses, users won't notice an appreciable speed boost compared to other USB drives, but they certainly won't be dissatisfied with its performance, either. And best of all - your computer will have no issue reliably detecting this drive, unlike cheaper alternatives.
The drive comes with downloadable RescuePro software (for one year), but the likelihood of file loss or damage with this drive is pretty minimal. Nice as a bonus.
This is an excellent option for university or business contexts where physical transfer of files might be necessitated by hardware or network incompatibility, or if one simply needs a reliable backup for important files.
The drive is compact but just large enough to be easily located in a pocket or bookbag. Plus, there's a plastic loop in the chassis to attach it to a keychain for extra ease of access.
The drive is made with over 70% recycled plastic, so for those concerned about environmental waste this is a great option.
Strongly recommended for anyone still in need of a USB drive in 2022, and an excellent choice for light and portable document backup. Definitely worth the price.

Amazing microphone for the money
on August 8, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
This headset is a mixed bag.
On the one hand, audio reproduction is decent without necessarily being stellar. Bass, in particular, is not really pronounced. Midrange and treble come through pretty well, but bass reproduction is pretty weak.
On the other, you'll be shocked by how good the microphone is. I didn't simply test this during gaming sessions; I used this headset for voice recording and was amazed how it outclassed headsets that cost more than twice as much. Audio quality on the microphone is simply fantastic. My voice comes through clear and crisp, with no ambient noise pickup or clipping. This is all the more impressive since the microphone keeps the mic at some distance from you, and has a somewhat limited range of motion from its mount in the left earphone.
Construction is great with this headset as well. The cups are not uncomfortable and the padding enables you to wear them for extended sessions without fatigue or discomfort. Because I'm an old man, I actually prefer the rotary volume wheel in the left earphone; I think you can get both more granular control over volume and more tactile response from volume wheels then you can with switches, and the volume control is in an easily accessible place. A mute button would have come in handy, but since this headset isn't geared towards teleconferencing I guess that omission was to be expected.
One cautionary note to people interested in picking this up - connection is only possible via 1/4 inch audio plug. This headset doesn't connect via USB and contains no USB adapter in the box. There is a stereo 1/4 inch adapter included, but check your equipment to make sure you have an easily acceptable 1/4 inch jack before buying.
All in all, this is great, cost-effective option for gamers and general users with a fantastic microphone. The only drawback is the weak bass reproduction.

A very good WiFi 6 router with a few hiccups
on July 12, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
This router provides affordable access to WiFi 6, and is a pretty good option for anyone living in an apartment or small- to mid-sized home. Coverage and signal strength are very good and performance is great for the price (more on that in a bit).
Setup is extremely easy, even for the non-tech proficient. The router comes with a slate of options during setup for QoS settings that can prioritize how the router is being used an excellent assortment of parental controls. Signal strength is great; I live in a town home and my router hookup is in the basement, but had no trouble with consistent signal strength on the second floor. Speed, in general, is also pretty impressive. During normal operation, I get about 650-700 Mbps at close range, with only modest decay to 620 or so when further away. This is more than enough for most users' broadband needs.
I put this router through a daily battery of phone, streaming, and Smart TV use, and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't have any issues with losing a signal or a device not successfully connecting, and the only problems I encountered during streaming related to streaming applications misbehaving (not the router). I also had no issue with signal strength, speed, or connectivity when dealing with multiple connected devices at once. I could check my security cameras, argue on Twitter, overhear my wife using TikTok, and stream a favorite movie through Netflix with no issue. If your use-case is standard issue stuff like what was just described, you will have no problems with this router.
The router is also light and leaves a small footprint, which is a huge compliment for a WiFi 6 router. You can easily install this in your current setup without worrying about making extra room for some beastly "Witch King of Angmar" looking thing. This is a huge benefit for pet owners like me who have to keep devices in places where they can broadcast adequately, but won't be accessible to curious cats.
The only downside I experienced with this router occurred occasionally when transferring large files. I had no problems with streaming or Internet access, but when I tried to move some files via FTP router performance noticeably slowed for reasons I can't quite explain. This obviously isn't going to affect most users, and were I not trying to move files from a Windows platform to a Linux platform I could have simply used removable storage to achieve the same goal. The only other problem I encountered was a similar slowdown with especially large file downloads. These take a while in the first place, and the router got the job done, but it honestly seemed to take a little more time than the older one I was replacing. These are minor gripes and definitely not deal breakers.
Overall, this router is a pretty decent upgrade for people who live in apartments or smaller homes. I had no issues with coverage, and under optima conditions had excellent network speeds, but those of you who have larger homes might need something more like a mesh solution. Definitely recommended for general users looking for a decent WiFi 6 router as an upgrade.

Excellent Choice for School or Business
on May 11, 2022
Posted by: Vespasian
from Philadelphia, PA
The main selling point of this laptop is the screen, and it's completely worth it. It doesn't just come with an OLED display; it comes with a well-calibrated OLED panel with absolutely fantastic color that really pops. This is a fantastic device for viewing content on, especially if you're working with (or creating) multimedia presentations. The i5 is no slouch, either, and seems to perform just as well as i7s from previous generations. Build quality is also a plus - despite possessing an ultrabook form factor, the chassis is sturdy and for once provides adequate structural support for that flagship display (i.e. not too thin, like certain other manufacturers). They keys also have decent travel and are not the stubby, shallow type seen in some other models. Audio is decent as well, even though max volume isn't that loud. Port selection and availability is more than adequate, but be advised that Asus is opting primarily for USB-C ports on this model. Hinge design and maneuverability is also excellent; you not only get an excellent range of motion but the mechanism simply feels more sturdy than the ones present on rival models. Brightness controls are nice and robust, too - you can really dim the display when necessary to avoid screen burn. The laptop also has a nice weight and feel and isn't uncomfortable to work with over extended periods.
The only minor issue, which is unfortunately present on other Ultrabooks, is heat buildup. When first downloading the battery of updates after initial setup, this thing got really warm. Every subsequent use has avoided the problem, though. There's a sizable ventilation opening along the left side of the body, which thankfully expels a lot of the heat away from the back vents (where anyone would definitely feel it).
One caveat - the box clearly shows there's 8gb of RAM on bd, meaning RAM is not upgradeable on this device. This is not a deal breaker for business or school use, but gamers and power users will obviously want to look elsewhere. For most people, though, this won't be an issue, and the fast performance of the laptop is testament to this.
Strongly recommended for students and business professionals.

How many layers are there? What materials are used in each layer?

There seem to be at least three layers, and the material is primarily nylon and polyester. Great if you have a medium to small nose, not so much otherwise.

Does this filter out covid? Otherwise it's useless!

I encountered continual air leakage from the upper part of the mask, which would indicate that the mask is not filtering out Covid at all. The material is good quality and would provide better protection than standard face masks if this weren't a problem.

Your filter options used to include "depth with stand". Is this still an option?

I have a tight mantle space where depth and overall height are the two main factors in my choice, but your filter options no longer include these? Am I looking in the wrong place or did you decide to remove these options?
The stand adds about 1-1/2 to 2" to the rear of the TV, so you can use that as an approximate guide.

Can Alexa along with any and all microphones be disabled? Is the only microphone on the remote or is there one built into the TV? I don't want my TV/Amazon listening to me.

You have to hold a button down on your remote in order to activate Alexa, so yes, you can effectively disable it by never using the feature. The "listening" seems to be done on the remote's end, so the TV won't pick up any audio from you if you're not trying to use Alexa.

The Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro+ is a cordless handheld vacuum designed for powerful suction. It comes with a motorized self-cleaning Pet Power Brush that eliminates hair wrap, a lithium-ion battery, CleanTouch dirt ejector, and more, at only 2.8 lbs.

How long is the battery duration?

Not that long if used constantly, but when used in bursts or short sessions it's good. I don't have an exact number.

Exercise to a soundtrack with these Jaybird Tarah Pro wireless sport headphones. Featuring a comfortable secure-fitting design and reliable waterproofing, these headphones stay in place during vigorous activity and stand up to sweat and bad weather. These Jaybird Tarah Pro wireless sport headphones last through the longest workouts with up to 14 hours of battery life per charge.

I have the x3 and the cord sticks to some of my clothes. Is this the same or does the new cord material work better?

I had no trouble with the cord for the Tarah Pro sticking. The braiding could perhaps attach to any clothing that has small, protruding fibers, like a sweater, but not on a sweatshirt or T-shirt.

What is the difference between this Netgear Universal Wi-Fi range extender and the Netgear AC750 Wi-Fi extender?

What is the difference between this Netgear Universal Wi-Fi range extender and the Netgear AC750 Wi-Fi extender?
The Netgear Universal WiFi Range Extender broadcasts the a/b/g/n WiFi standards, while the Netgear AC750 broadcasts the newer ac standard. Most WiFi-ready equipment uses the N standard (or something older), so unless you own a device that's capable of receiving ac wifi signals (and you have a fast enough internet connection that'll let you see the speed difference), you're better off with the Universal (i. e. non-ac) extender. Ac-capable routers still run in the +$100 dollar range, so unless you already own one, it's best to hold off on ac extenders.
