Do the job at a great price
on October 3, 2021

I have been very impressed so far by the ease of use and sound quality of the JVC Gumi true wireless headphones.
Nothing about these headphones is very expensive, which is a good thing if you go through headphones at the rate I do. I've had more expensive brands that have failed and only sounded slightly better, or didn't pair well, or any number of things. So many pairs it's hard to justify spending a lot on earbuds anymore.
These are a great solution if you want something decent that gets the job done for not a lot of money. The sound isn't amazing, but it's good, particularly if you're using them for a quick workout, etc.
Of course there are a few drawbacks, but they are few, and to be expected for a pair of ear buds in this price range. The case is cheap, but sturdy enough and doubles as a charger. That is probably the biggest drawback as everything else about these headphones is good--not great. But again, for this price that's enough.
The headphones pair very fast and very easy--easier than many more expensive pairs I've used....and they don't come unpaired in that annoying way that many of these sets do. They also don't come loose very easily while running or working out, which is another thing they do better than most earbuds.
Overall this is a really good inexpensive set of ear buds that do the job, and do it decently. I highly recommend them. However, if you're an audiophile or just like spending a lot of money you may want to look elsewhere.

Nice entry level ANC headphones
on July 20, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
The Jlab on ear headphones are a really nice option for anyone looking for a decent pair of noise cancelling headphones without the high prices that come with the high end sets.
In the box are the headphones, charging cord, 'instructions' flyer and a carrying bag. The bag is nice--not very high-end, of course, but it does the job.
The basic controls are on the headphones--bluetooth connected to every device I tried almost instantly and with no issues. The volume controls on the headphones are a little tricky at first, but easy enough to get a handle on quickly.
The headphones are nice, though like most headphones they're a little small for my large head. For being 'on ear' rather than 'over the year' they are very comfortable. I didn't have to adjust them much, which is a big endorsement from me.
It didn't take very long to charge the set, and the battery never actually ran out the entire time I used them. I'm in the habit of plugging things in when I'm done with them, but I purposely waited to charge them several days while using them for at least an hour a day. I don't think the charge ever fell below 50%.
They are entry level so there aren't a lot of extra features, but the basic features are nice and perform better than expected. Sound quality was very good for music or even movies if you use them with a TV set or computer, etc.
I was very impressed with the sound quality on phone calls. I could hear the caller very clearly, and was told by everyone I talked to that they heard me without any issues.
The noise cancelling is adequate. Obviously it's not the same as a $300 set of headphones, but it does the job pretty well. At this level they won't cancel all noise, but most noise is filtered. There is a mild effect on sound quality when it's active, I noticed, but nothing too detrimental.
In a nutshell if you are thinking about a set of noise cancelling headphones but don't want to put a ton of money into it this is a great set of entry level headphones that will give you a great idea of what they're capable of, and will likely do the job for most people.

Another great product from JLab!
on June 17, 2021

The JLab - Studio Pro ANC over the ear headphones are a great, fairly priced alternative to high-end headphones! They are feature-filled, sound really good and offer functional 'noise cancelling' all for a great price.
With that great price comes a slight compromise in quality, but the price difference between these and the very best noise cancelling headphones is major (you'll pay at least twice as much for other brands--and often quite a bit more).
You'll need to charge them out of the box (USB-C, thank goodness, and a charging cable is included, along with a 3.5 mm cord if you need to use them old-school style), but you won't need to charge them often as the battery life is amazing! I used them off and on for a week and still had charge left. I meant to run them down completely to get some kind of idea of total battery life, but my habit of charging things overnight did me in and I plugged them in to charge without thinking about it. If you're the type that runs things out completely before charging them again it will be a looong time between charges.
The 'Active noise cancelling' works well--for this price point. Basically you will hear things around you, but they'll be 'quieter' when the ACN is activated. There are actually a few different ANC settings--one of them being a rather odd setting that seems to amplify your own voice--which is admittedly kind of fun if you want to have a karaoke session by yourself!
The mic worked great on my test phone calls--no one had any difficulty hearing me. I even traded off with my wife to see if she could hear me and how well I could understand her with her calling and using the headphones and it sounded great--I'd have never known she was using them and not speaking through her phone mic.
If you do a lot of work from home these days you can pair these to your laptop and use them for business functions with no issues.
The sound quality for games was great, for music it was good. I like a lot of bass and the headphones had a little trouble reproducing bass to my liking. Standard music sounded really good, music with emphasized bass not so much. The EQ settings were okay--it was a little weird trying to adjust them. I have difficulty with any headphones that use touch controls, since my hands are large--I hit things by mistake all the time. I didn't use the EQ settings too often (on purpose, anyway, though I did use it by mistake fairly often while fumbling for the controls) since I often don't care too much for pre-programmed EQ settings. A customizable option would have been nice. Since some of the controls for the EQ weren't available until after a software update and checking the manual perhaps they can add a mode like this in the future?
The headphones themselves are comfortable and light-weight, though my over-size head often has issues with headphones fitting correctly I had no trouble with these. I like using noise-canceling headphones while mowing my yard so I gave these a try. They're very comfortable, though the over-the-ear design does tend to make the cups a little 'sweaty' on a hot day. The weight was not an issue at all, as it sometimes is with other sets of over-the-ear type headphones.
Overall if you're in need of noise cancelling headphones that can be used as a headset then you can't go wrong with these--particularly if you're on a budget!

Great keyboard once you download the software
on June 2, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
The installation of this keyboard was super easy--it almost seemed too easy at first. Of course, I didn't realize until I searched a bit that it's super helpful to install their software to make the keyboard fully customizable.
At first use even without the software installed the keyboard looks and feel great! There is a detachable wrist-rest that snaps onto the frame. I love these and really wish every manufacturer would include them. It's so much better for your wrists and even arms to have them properly supported while using a computer.
The light set up is really cool--and once you install the software you can customize the lights to your liking, or even let it 'sense' what you're doing and give you a nifty auto-customized set up!
The software was also super helpful in letting me map out keyboard settings that I prefer and was used to, but aren't already on the layout.
Something that wasn't a negative for me but that other people may not care for--being a mechanical keyboard I was a bit surprised at the sound and feel of the keys. With others I've used the keys felt more substantial---but were also quite a bit louder during use. This keyboard is a bit of a trade-off in that it's not as loud while using (but still louder than a standard keyboard) but the keys don't feel as firm as standard mechanical keyboard.
The software works well enough and has enough cool customization that I'm looking into their other gaming products!
For a mid-price mechanical keyboard this one has enough bells and whistles that you'd never know it was cheaper than others...except maybe in your keyboard preferences--if you like a very substantial 'clacky' keyboard you may want to look elsewhere.

Perfect portable speaker!
on June 2, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
The Sony XB13 portable speaker is almost perfect! It's small, super easy to set up, WATERPROOF! and has an ingenious snappable 'strap' for hanging in out of the way places!
Seriously--this thing is small, though feels much more substantial than other speakers of this size. You won't feel like you might have broken it tossing it into the back of your SUV as you hit the road.
It's super-easy to set up as well--charge it for a while, then hit the power button and it will start looking for things to pair to right away. My phone and ipad both found it within seconds. From there adjust the volume and you're all set!
The sound quality is the best I've heard in a portable speaker this small--there really is extra and substantial bass! It's crystal clear and the bluetooth signal can be picked up very far away (I was able to get roughly 300 feet away before it starting getting staticy). Your mileage may vary, of course.
If you are looking for a portable speaker that won't take up a ton of space in your bag or car then this is perfect! They're small enough that you can even take a set of them with you (if your device can pair to more than one thing, of course) for filling an outdoor area!
Highly recommended--especially for the price!

Incredibly responsive gaming mouse!
on April 12, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
This mouse is a winner! The new Pro RGB gaming mouse from Corsair is maybe the fastest mouse I've ever used--the response time is incredible!
The mouse is sleek and simple--and large, which is a benefit for those of us with larger hands--it feels substantial. The clicks from the right and left mouse seem instant, and feel satisfying when clicked.
It's also one of the lightest mouses (mice?) I've ever used. Corsair put 'teflon' skates on the bottom, so it moves fast and instantly.
The mouse works with basic plug and play, but with the iCue software (you'll have to download separately) you can do MUCH more! Programmable buttons, of course, but also pre-programmed DPI inputs to adjust to your liking (it has a custom 18,000 DPI sensor built in, but you need a really fast processor to take advantage of the complete sensor). You can also adjust this on the fly with the (very small) DPI button built into the mouse.
If you're a serious gamer then Corsair's new mouse is made for you. Even casual gamers will notice a difference in the quality of this mouse. It's responsive enough that you will likely notice a difference instantly--even before adjusting the software to your liking. Definitely worth it---the only problem is now I want the gaming keyboard that matches!

Another great vacuum from Dyson!
on April 5, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
Dyson's entry into cordless vacuums has produced a really great, easy to use vacuum with a few small caveats.
In the package is the vacuum, charger and instructions. The vacuum requires some assembly, which is mostly straightforward--thank goodness, since the included guide wasn't much help. It all snaps together so there are no tools required--for the vacuum.
In order to follow the instructions for the charger you will need a few tools: a screwdriver at the very least, though a stud-finder and power drill are helpful for mounting. The charger needs to be mounted in such a way that the vacuum still sits on the floor--a bit of an inconvenience, since a very specific spot is required. You'll need access to an outlet fairly close by, and free wall and floor space for the vacuum to be stored since the vacuum needs to sit on the ground with the charger mounted in the right spot for it to 'slide' right onto the charger. Fortunately I have a utility closet that fits the bill and can keep the vacuum stored while out of sight without having to shuffle too many things around. It would have been nice if the charger had been a bit more substantial to hold the vacuum off the floor and make storage a bit more convenient.
It takes roughly 4-hours to fully charge the vacuum. There are two settings on it that will determine how fast you use the charge---a standard setting and a 'high' setting that presumably uses the battery twice as fast.
The vacuum does a fantastic job--I have used it in several areas including an outdoor patio and it gets small things up quickly, with the stronger setting getting everything up in one pass! I tested it over a dirt spill near a flower pot that had been knocked over, and the high setting took the nearly quarter-inch depth dirt up completely down to the concrete! The 360 degree rollers make it very maneuverable, and it's very lightweight so there's very little chance of 'arm fatigue' before the job is finished.
The head itself could be larger--with the small size it takes a while to clean larger areas. It feels like this is a vacuum designed for quick clean up of small messes, and it excels at that. Large rooms or even large messes are a bit more of a hassle due to the head size, and the small amount of dirt the cup holds before having to be emptied. A quick cleaning of my garage (standard two-car size) took about 5 cup empties, which was a bit of a hassle.
While it's not perfect, it does excel at the thing Dyson's known for--great power to it's vacuum cleaners. This vacuum does a fantastic job of cleaning small areas and even big spills, it may just take longer that you feel like it should due to the small head and cup that doesn't hold much. If you've got a place to store it and are in need of a device like this then I highly recommend it!

Excellent dual use coffee maker!
on March 29, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
The Mr Coffee Combo Brewer solves two problems with one brewer, and does it very well!
One of the best things about the combo brewer is it is surprisingly small! The footprint of this machine is smaller than the single cup machine I replaced. It also looks very modern and sleek, particularly with the heavy duty carafe that is included (see picture).
Set up and brewing are pretty straight-forward. The clock was easy to program, and the timer is just as easy. If you want a nice cup or pot of coffee waiting for you when you wake up it's very simple to do.
The filter holder has a clever adapter that the machine can sense, so it automatically knows what type (k-cup or pot) of coffee you want to make based on how you have it configured.
It has a few sizes to choose from for k-cups. One of my very favorite things about this brewer is the 12 oz size is actually 12 ounces (see picture). Even on the 'large' setting my old machine would only fill my cups about half-full. There is plenty of room for large sized 'travel mugs' to fit under the brewer when making a k-cup, so no more 'brewing in a cup then pouring into my travel cup!'
The nice looking metal carafe that's included completely takes the place of the old heating elements that used to be standard on drip style coffee makers. When testing this I brewed a full pot of coffee, then checked the temperature with a food thermometer every hour. Even after four hours the coffee had only lost a couple of degrees, so if you're an all-day coffee drinker this is fantastic! There is also the bonus of your coffee not tasting 'burnt' after sitting on a burner all day. Four hours later the coffee still tastes almost as fresh as when it was first brewed.
There are only one or two mildly inconvenient things about the coffee maker. The water reservoir is in the very back, so it can be tricky to get to depending on where you have the coffee maker sitting. It holds a lot of water, though, so you shouldn't have to fill it any more than an average machine--maybe less, depending. My old single cup brewer's reservoir held roughly three cups of coffee, so this is definitely an upgrade.
There has been a time or two that the coffee maker has turned out a 'slow trickle' rather than a full cup, but that appears to be due to not having everything aligned just right.
The only other issue I've seen is storage of items you're not using can be a little tricky. The carafe is large, and has to be removed when you're using the single cup function. There is also a really cool and convenient 'single cup' filter that can allow you to use that function with regular coffee. It's a rather small filter so we've had to be really careful with where we place it. Not a huge deal, but our house can be chaotic sometimes and things get lost pretty easily. I can see having to replace that a time or two.
Overall if you're in the market for a dual function coffee maker I wholeheartedly recommend this model! The size is great, the coffee tastes great, and the price is much lower than most dual models out there!

Very nice gaming laptop, with the usual drawbacks
on March 2, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
Gaming laptops are an odd beast in general, since most PC gamers (like myself) tend to gravitate towards PC's over consoles for the sheer diversity of options available, and the ability to upgrade your system over time, making it many years before you'd have to buy a new PC while still being able to play the latest games.
Of course, the drawback to tower PC's is they have little to no 'portability', so going to a friend's house for some LAN gaming is typically not an option--at least not an easy one.
Dell and some other companies are getting around that, and offering nice options to people that want to game regularly but still have to travel for work, or college students that may not have room for a huge system but still want to play the latest games at the highest settings.
This PC is a great solution for people with those needs-- a high-end system that is fairly portable and can play the latest games with no issues.
The good things are plentiful--it's a really nice looking laptop. The keys are comfortable and backlit. On first use it powered up and started within a few seconds (man I love SSD drives) and was ready to start set-up for Windows. It had about 50% charge, but of course your mileage may vary. After that there are some very helpful proprietary programs from Dell that are worth installing. The Dell Mobile Connect and Alienware Command center both help insure the programs installed both on the bios and for the operating system are maintained. The Alienware Command center puts all your games in one place and can help tweak them--it also does cool things like 'prioritize' gaming so you don't have sudden screen switches for an e-mail or some other notification you don't care about. It also prioritizes your RAM for gaming over other programs that might be running, which helps have a very smooth gaming experience. I've used Dell and Alienware systems almost exclusively for gaming the past few years and this is one of my favorite features.
The screen is gorgeous (though I do wish they could figure out a way to incorporate a touch screen as well--this is almost standard in high-end laptops anymore and feels like it should be a feature here) and the graphics look outstanding.
I tried a few games out right away--I started with Skyrim at the highest settings--it looked incredible, but the game breaking bugs at the beginning of the game alas made it basically unplayable--no fault of the computer. I moved onto Crysis 3, which is still one of the biggest 'system hogs' out there, and it looked fantastic. I played it for roughly two hours and saw no drops in framerate and had terrific loading speeds. Doom Eternal at the highest settings had fantastic results as well.
Like most gaming laptops you don't actually want this on your lap while you play--it gets pretty warm. Nothing dangerous or anything like that, but the heat monitor I installed still read 99 C a few different times. I never saw any degradation of gameplay so the liquid cooling system is effective. This is pretty typical of any gaming computer, but is obviously more noticeable in laptop form.
Like any good advanced laptop the number of connections and ports is impressive--happy to say there's a USB-C, which should be required of all electronics anymore, as well as an HDMI out if you want to show the impressive graphics on another screen.
The speakers are better than typical laptop speakers, but they're still laptop speakers. You'll likely be using a headset anyway, but the speakers will certainly do the job in a pinch.
There are a couple of slight drawbacks typical of gaming laptops: 1) the system is heavy--7 lbs not including the power brick. It won't be very comfortable on a laptop for any extended period of time. The 'brick' is also pretty substantial, so a small laptop backpack will likely not be big enough for this system. 2) The SSD drive is fast and works great, but it's small. You will need an expansion drive probably fairly soon after this if you own a few games you like to switch between (Doom Eternal requires 50g by itself, not including any expansions--which is pretty typical of graphics intensive games). Not a huge issue since this is a typical drawback.
Of course, the biggest drawback is there really isn't much 'upgradeability' for the future with gaming laptops, but if you're considering this system you are likely already aware of this. One nice thing though--the RAM is able to double beyond what's installed. Normally in laptops this is pretty easy and manufacturer's place the RAM in an easy to access area. Typically it means replacing the sticks in the system with new ones, but it can be done at home which is at least one way to save a little should you decide the RAM included isn't enough.
As it is, this is a great gaming laptop that can get the job done and play the latest games for the foreseeable future without issue. Highly recommended if you're in the market for a gaming laptop!

Beautiful watch; okay fitness tracker
on February 12, 2021
Posted by: SgtRock
from Thompsons Station
The Withings Scanwatch is easily the most attractive fitness watch on the market. It's a great choice for those that want to keep track of their fitness while working a job that requires a bit more professional look than most 'sporty' fitness trackers provide.
It looks and feels like a very elegant watch, particularly at a casual glance. Most people I showed it to had no idea it was a fitness tracker until I showed them the tracker functions. The design looks great and as a watch it's fantastic--it syncs with your phone's time so it's always accurate, and the hands are easy to read. They even have the old-school glow-in-the-dark strips on the hands so no obnoxious bright light is required to read it in a dark room.
The health implementations are unique--with ECG and O2 tests built in I imagine it's an important watch for people with heart conditions or worries of an underlying illness. For the most part the ECG worked very well--I have a small arrhythmia that it picked up on every reading. The only issue I had is that the conditions need to be just about perfect to get an accurate reading--the slightest noise can nullify the results and you'll get an error message and have to start over. I had much worse luck with the O2 sensor--I could not get it to work until I watched a few videos of other people using it. Even then it failed a frustrating number of times.
If you have poor reading vision the watch might be a little frustrating, as the display for the readout is small. One frustration for me was trying to run with it--I don't wear my reading glasses while running, so I really couldn't read most of the pertinent information about my workout until I was in a place where I could put my glasses on, and even then it was easier to read on the app.
Speaking of the app, it's (like everything these days) necessary to set up the watch, and has a ton of useful information on it after the set up. You can set up regular heart and O2 tests, monitor results over a period of time, monitor your workouts and workout heart rates, monitor sleep cycles, etc. It's all very well thought out and easy to use.
Probably the biggest negative for me was the lack of GPS built in. If you run with your phone every time you'll find yourself using another tracker app to measure distance accurately. It would have been great to have a GPS tracker built in--I mostly run with my workouts, so I've found myself changing into a standard fitness tracker for my runs. You may want to do that anyway, as the watch looks so nice it will feel a little out of place with a workout ensemble.

The watch has an impressive array of workout settings to choose from, though, and it seems to be pretty accurate for most (I didn't test the boxing setting, but I'm impressed there is one) so the GPS isn't really an issue unless you're running/walking and possibly biking.
The best thing far and away about this watch is the battery life--the box says 30-days, and it genuinely seems like it could last that long! I worry too much about my devices running out of charge, but I managed to wait two weeks and it still read over 30% when I re-charged it. I was working out and running ECG tests and wearing it to bed for the sleep monitor most nights, so I was likely using the charge faster than standard use and it still had an impressive amount of charge left! I wish every company would use this technology, frankly--it's that impressive.
Overall this is a perfect device for people with conditions they either have or want to monitor, and people that need something a bit more elegant to wear while still keeping track of their steps, heart rate, etc. If you're a runner or your eyes aren't that great you'll probably want a secondary device for runs or working out, though--and you might want one anyway just to avoid being overdressed at the gym.

Dominate in style with the Dell G7 17-inch gaming laptop with thin, sleek design, 10th Gen Intel Core processor, NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2070 (Max-P) discrete graphics, Game Shift technology and 4-zone RGB keyboard.

What's the approximate cost of a replacement battery?

Most sites have the G7 battery listed at about $80.

So im really trying to choose between the 17.3 inch and the 15.7 inch. I have some questions and it would be great if you can help me with choosing. 1st question: Is the 17.3 inch storage upgradable? 2nd: How much better is the max in the 15.7 inch?

With most gaming laptops upgrading the storage means replacing the drive in the system (there simply isn't room for another drive in most cases--which I believe is the case for either of these models). Your best bet is investing in a portable, external hard drive and taking it with the laptop. You can, of course, replace the drive in the system, but that can be pretty difficult since you'll need to copy a lot of the information in the current hard drive first, then transfer it all to the new drive, etc.

Control your home’s heating and cooling system remotely with this LUX Wi-Fi thermostat. The Android and iOS companion app supports geofencing, smart scheduling and personalization settings for efficiency, and compatibility with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa offers convenient voice control. This LUX Wi-Fi thermostat works with electric, gas, oil and forced-air systems for versatility.

Can the thermostat be locked via the software so unauthorized people wouldn't be able to change the settings? I couldn't find this info in the users manual.

Yes--there is a very simple setting for this in the app (and ONLY in the app as far as I can tell)

Will a standard 1/4 sheet baking pan (9.5"X13") fit in the oven?

No. There is a smaller baking pan that comes with it, but the dimensions you describe are too large.

I wanted to add another 16GB ram stick. What ram stick is compatible with the current hyper x fury 16 gb stick?

Kingston Technology HyperX Fury Black 16GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL16 DIMM (HX426C16FB/16)---that is the exact match for what's in the system now. If you want to try and find a cheaper match (good luck!) then you'll want to make sure the 16gb and 2666 mhz speed match, and of course that it's DDR4 and for a desktop. Amazon currently has a single stick on sale that matches for the lowest price I've seen, but it's the same exact memory stick. There may be cheaper, more generic options available as well.

Enjoy crisp, colorful picture quality with this Full HD HP monitor. The ultrathin bezel on the 27-inch screen provides an expansive viewing area so you can stay productive, and its AMD FreeSync technology reduces input lag and screen tearing. This HP monitor has two HDMI ports for connecting gaming consoles and other devices.

Is there any way to use a speaker with this monitor?

You'd have to have the speakers connected to your computer system itself--there are no speaker outputs on the monitor.

Nest Doorbell (Wired) lets you know who’s there, so you never miss a thing. It replaces your existing wired doorbell and delivers HD video and bright, crisp images, even at night. It’s designed to show you everything at your doorstep — people head to toe or packages on the ground. And with 24/7 streaming, you can check in anytime. Or go back and look at a 3-hour snapshot history to see what happened.*

Will Google Hello do a better job in regards to lag (delay) and motion detection? I had another video doorbell (rhimes with Ding) which could not adequately connect to the wifi, terrable lag, poor motion detection (false alarms and missed live ones).

From my testing there was very little lag. There is some, of course, but it was maybe 1-2 seconds behind. The motion detection seems to be perfect. It ignores far off motion, but records anything within 10-15 feet.

Listen to your favorite tunes on the go with this rechargeable iHome IBT74BC speaker, which features a Bluetooth interface, so you can stream music from most Bluetooth-enabled devices, including select Apple®, Android and BlackBerry models.

Does this only come with a cord to charge or does it have something you can plug into the wall with?

It plugs directly into an outlet (the plug is actually pretty large, the wire itself is not).
