It's not awful...

If, like me, you've been a G N' R fan since the 80's you will be both disappointed and impressed by this album. It's not as good as their four previous official albums. The sound is all over the place. Alot of the songs just aren't very good. I miss Slash, Izzy, Duff and Matt...so does the sound...
Here's the rub...some of the songs are actually pretty darn good. The more I listen to them, the more I like them. Alot of people have said that they grow on you and I'd have to agree. I had such low expectations for this one that I was genuinely impressed by some of these songs. Axl can still sing as good as he ever could.
Bottom line...it's actually not that bad and you'll most certainly dig it one way or another if you are a G N' R fan. Hats off to Axl for defying the odds and producing a couple of good songs worthy of the name. Give it a chance.
What's great about it: Exceed my expectations
What's not so great: I had VERY low expectations

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid's status as one of the least-known Steve Martin comedies makes this bare-bones, yet impressively transferred DVD curious in light of the fact that The Jerk still languishes on the format as a full-frame-only edition. Dead Men was an experiment in editing old movie footage with newly shot footage in order to create a new story. The non-anamorphic 1.85:1 digital transfer is another example of quality mastering by Universal (no matter how obscure the film) that proves it is fully committed to the format. Shot in black-and-white, the clearer, sharper picture looks great and blends well with the old footage. The transitions aren't entirely seamless, which is part of the comic effect. The two-channel mono soundtrack isn't exactly impressive, but for a film meant to invoke the old detective films of the 1940s, it suffices. Some production notes and a trailer are the only supplements. While Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid may not seem like a likely release for DVD above some other films, this edition is good enough to preserve the film for a while longer.

If you love to read...

If you love to read...this might be the perfect item for you...or if you know someone who loves to read...this might be the perfect Christmas present...the only negative is the selection of titles...the Sony eBook store does have alot of books but not as many as the Kindle...however...Sony is currently offering 100 free classics if you buy this little gem...that in and of itself makes the price well worth it...
What's great about it: You can carry all of your "books" in one tiny device
What's not so great: Selection lags behind Kindle...for now...

Though it makes up for some of the previous edition's mishaps, the Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition is an almost-perfect DVD that suffers only from a bit of laziness on the part of Universal. Released in 2000 as one of director Steven Spielberg's first blockbusters unveiled on DVD, the Jaws: Collector's Edition was a big seller in the stores, yet still managed to fall short thanks to the studio's unwillingness to include the full two-hour documentary from the laserdisc, long thought of as the definitive look back on the troubled production. So now here comes this two-disc set celebrating the crowd-pleaser's pearl anniversary and the good news is that the documentary has indeed been reinstated to its full glory. Those who have only seen the previous hour-long cut are in for a big treat here, thanks to the incredible detail that was culled from the various sources in the production, including John Williams, Richard Dreyfuss, Roy Scheider, Peter Benchley, production designer Joe Alves, and, of course, Spielberg himself. Another bit of good news involves the inclusion of a never-before-available nine-minute interview on-set with the director from 1974 that gives the audience a rare glimpse of the young director on just his second day of shooting, no doubt already feeling the constraints of the sea-bound production. For aficionados, it's the kind of engaging footage that is endlessly interesting, given the kind of Vietnam hell that followed Spielberg on the rest of the shoot. Other new bits of goodness involve the inclusion of both 5.1 DTS and Dolby tracks (previous versions included either one or the other) along with the infamous original theatrical mono audio track, which will please the hardcore fans out there to no end (many were not happy with the enhanced 5.1 tracks). What isn't pleasing about this edition is the exclusion of the famed theatrical trailers that figured prominently into the success of the film. This lone exclusion will prevent most customers from getting rid of their previous version, which makes little sense in the grand scheme of things given that the rest of the still archives were carried over, including other marketing pieces such as posters, books, T-shirts, and much more. This, along with the fact that no new menus were designed for this edition, just makes Universal look bad. It's like they listened to the gripes about the documentary on the last one, but didn't feel the need to dedicate more money into an anniversary edition of one of the biggest films of all time. The result is yet another DVD that gives the same "play all" feature to the deleted scenes, with the added annoyance of outtakes being thrown into the same feature as well. Though no one will miss the trivia game or the shark facts from the previous version, there will be those who will resent the silliness involved with the loss of the very integral trailers. Still, with the full documentary and the reinstated original mono mix, many will pony up for this release, which comes with a nice commemorative booklet and the same fine 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer carried over from the Widescreen Collector's Edition.

Batman Returns, Tim Burton's even darker and more complex sequel to Batman, has an equally disappointing presentation on DVD: besides the widescreen anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, the disc offers some production notes as its only extra feature. Though Burton devotees and Batgeeks will definitely want to own this disc out of sheer obligation, Batman Returns needs a much more substantial presentation. However, the recent deluxe editions of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and even The Nightmare Before Christmas suggest that a more lavish version of Batman Returns is on its way.

This is easily the best G n R album...all the songs are worth listening too while some of them are outright rock n' roll classics. I'm a little skeptical about Chinese Democracy (the album)...but I'll give it a whirl because they used to be so good.
What's great about it: G 'N R's best
What's not so great: Nada

Lycanthropes rejoice! Joe Dante's groundbreaking werewolf effort has finally received the special-edition treatment with this extensive MGM/UA release. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, MGM/UA has done a commendable job in presenting the film. The transfer offers well-balanced colors, accurate skin tones, and, in frequent nighttime scenes, solid blacks with little to no digital artifacting. Likewise, a newly mastered, closed-captioned English Dolby Digital audio track brings the film to life as never before heard on home theater systems. Offering dynamic sound that will have nervous viewers peering over their shoulders in terror, the ominous howling of the colony's mysterious residents sounds as if it may be coming from somewhere a little to close for comfort outside viewer's windows. With as much work as MGM/UA has put into presenting a pristine image, it's the extras (located on the flip side of the disc) that will truly have longtime fans venturing into the light of the full moon to seek out this particular release. A commentary track featuring director Dante and stars Dee Wallace Stone, Christopher Stone, and Robert Picardo is lively and affectionately reminiscent, and in addition to humorous anecdotes, offers insight into the creative process and the manner in which the film was streamlined during the editing process. "Unleashing the Beast: The Making of The Howling" is broken up into numerous segments, and offers everything from revealing interviews with screenwriter John Sayles (discussing the film's departure from the novel and the psychology of werewolves) to the story of how director Dante came to be involved to study the origins of the werewolf mythos. The title of its companion piece, "Making a Monster Movie: Inside The Howling" may seem a bit misleading given that not very much making-of info is present, though interviews with Dante and star Patrick Macnee do offer some interesting meditations on the components of a truly effective horror film. An interview with make-up effects artist Rob Bottin is surprisingly brief considering the film's groundbreaking visual effects. Deleted scenes are mostly incidental with the exceptions of some group therapy scenes that would have lent the film a decidedly more psychological angle, and outtakes offer the usual cut-ups and flubbed lines in addition to some hilarious bladder-bursting makeup mishaps. A pair of nightmarish theatrical trailers are well-presented in widescreen format, and galleries of production and publicity photos offer an enticing glimpse behind the scenes and a close-up look at Bottin's impressive creations. A fun, fact-filled insert rounds out the disc nicely with some interesting trivia concerning the film.

I'm more of "An American Werewolf in London" kinda guy but this one is pretty good too. If you like horror movies or werewolves you'll probably enjoy this one...its a little dated, more so than AAWIL but its still worth a look see...
What's great about it: The special effects (for the time)
What's not so great: Acting is pretty bad...but passable

I was told that because I have cable instead of sat or direct tv, that I should go with a projection tv instead of LCD or Plasma. Any truth in that?

No...not that I know of...and I'm pretty informed no this topic. I suppose it all depends on the picture quality of the TV...but projection is a distant third if you ask me...

You can, however, get alot more size for the money with a projection. I personally think they are inferior in too many ways though...

LG - 22" Widescreen Flat-Panel LCD Monitor

The TV, which otherwise looks very good, lack something that I want: an HDMI input. I have an XBOX 360, and I usually play with it through an HDMI cable, but I wanted to know if there are either any TV's in the price range of $0- $400 that are better, with more features; or if there is something I can hookup to get the same quality (1080p) of gaming.
I would highly recommend either the HP, Samsung or Dell PC monitors...they have very good image quality and can all be had for $400 some odd dollars...except maybe the Dell. You can probably upgrade to a 24 incher for this price with HDMI or DVI which is the same thing as HDMI, just need a converter plug. These should all be HDCP compliant so you can watch HD broadcasts and play PS3 or blue ray through them as well. I have an HP2408 and it is fantastic for personal use. I've also had a Samsung, also fantastic and I've read that the Dell is very good too. Hope this helps. Just another thought...if your LG has DVI then all you need is the HDMI to DVI converter tip and you're all set to go...not image loss DVI = HDMI quality.
