Jeff Pollack directs Tupac Shakur and Leon in the urban basketball drama Above the Rim, which comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include theatrical trailers. Additional extras are available for those with a DVD-ROM drive. This is a fine release from New Line Home Entertainment.

This is a great movie, great plot, great cast, and a great director. If you like basketball movies with that gangster attitude, than this is a movie to see. Tupac was great playing a gangster, but was that really a stretch for him. Duane Martin got a chance to relive his dream of playing basketball in front the world, well those saw this movie. Marlon Wayans is even good, but surprise, Bernie Mac steals the show as a homeless man.

A Time to Kill comes to single-layer DVD in a widescreen anamorphic picture format (2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio) and these audio options: English (Dolby Digital 5.1) and French (Dolby Digital 5.1), with subtitles available in English, Spanish, and French. Closed captioning is also included. Although there are no special features included aside from some brief production notes and the usual original theatrical trailers, picture quality is nothing short of stunning, with fine, crisp details, superb optimization, and natural coloring. Sound quality is excellently sharp and clear, but the surround goes out in some scenes.

Martin Lawrence's black comedy about the battle of the sexes, A Thin Line Between Love & Hate comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, as well as an inferior full-frame transfer. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by producer George Jackson, as well as cast and crew filmographies, and the original theatrical trailer. This is a solid release from New Line that will surely please fans of the film.

Cheating has its limits

Funny movie about a woman that is sick and tired of unfaithful men and she has had enough. Martin was at the peek of his career, with hit sitcom and on-demand actor, when he made this funny movie that established Bobby Brown as an actor. Yeah, Bobby Brown was really acting in this movie

Daniel Petrie Jr.'s moving examination of the African-American experience arrives on DVD with two video transfers. The widescreen 1.85:1 image faithfully reproduces the original theatrical aspect ratio and is preferable to the full-frame 1.33:1 picture. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono and is closed-captioned. English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, and Thai subtitles are accessible. Extra features include production notes, talent files, and a handful of trailers.

Bill Duke directs this quirky film adaptation of Chester Himes' crime novel -- a heavily plotted gangster tale with a sweet love story hidden underneath. The film begins in Natchez, Mississippi in 1956. During a police shoot-out with the mob leader Slim's (Badja Djola) gang, Slim's moll Imabelle (Robin Givens) takes off with a cadre of stolen gold. As a result, Imabelle is chased by Slim's mob from Mississippi to New York. By the time she reaches Harlem, she is broke and has to figure out a way to ditch the trunk full of gold. She finds herself at the annual Undertaker's Ball, where she sees the big and dumb Jackson (Forest Whitaker), a bumbling undertaker's assistant. She spots Jackson as a mark that she can use as a cover and latches onto him immediately. She moves in with him to hide out, but Imabelle becomes taken with his innocence. For his part, Jackson falls head over heels in love with her. But the Mississippi mob catches up with her and takes her away. Jackson calls in his street-wise brother Goldy (Gregory Hines) to help him rescue Imabelle. Jackson fears that Imabelle has been kidnapped. But Goldy knows better -- he still agrees to help him but Goldy wants the gold for himself.

Could Have Been Better

An all black starring cast seems like a good idea, sometimes, but there are times were its just not good thought. You don't really connect with anyone in the movie, even though Forrest Witaker is good, but being good in this movie is like thinking George W. Bush is doing a good job as president

Death and mayhem follow the kids of Elm Street like an overcast cloud in A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, the fifth entry in this popular horror series. New Line has done a good job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Also included on this disc is a pan-and-scan version of the film. This is a very nice-looking transfer with colors and black levels all looking well saturated and even. The only flaw that shows up in a few scenes is a small amount of grain or dirt. The audio is presented in a newly remixed 5.1 soundtrack (as well as the original 2.0 soundtrack). This new mix works great in the confines of the film, utilizing surround sounds on many scary occasions. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free of any excessive distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English captions. The only extra features available on this edition of A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child are some cast and crew bios, the original theatrical trailer, and some DVD-ROM content. While the video and audio portions of the disc are good, the box set of all seven films is recommended for true fans.

Please kill Freddy and let him just die, because the concepts are getting ridiculous. A unborn baby dreaming, is a little bit too much.

The dreams of innocent children once again fall victim to everyone's favorite bogeyman Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. New Line has done a good job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Also included on this disc is a pan-and-scan version of the film. The colors in the image tend to look very well saturated with only a small amount of bleeding in a few scenes. This is generally a very solid transfer with even flesh tones and dark black levels. The audio is presented in a newly remixed 5.1 soundtrack (as well as the original 2.0 soundtrack). This new mix is very good with some excellent surround sounds filtering out through both the front and rear speakers. All aspects of the dialogue, effects, and music are free of any excessive distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English captions. The only extra features available on this edition of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master are some cast and crew bios, the original theatrical trailer, and some DVD-ROM content. Ok enough already

You would think that New Line Cinema had milked Freddy enough money to just say, "Ok Freddy's dead, now lets focus on a new character," no they bring another Elm Street. This is were this saga gets boring and loses it edge on a horror kingdom

Everyone's favorite pizza-faced serial killer returns for round three in this slick and surreal addition to the popular Nightmare on Elm Street series, arriving on DVD from New Line Home Video. Viewable in either the original 1.85:1 widescreen version or standard 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan and featuring closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 and Mono soundtracks, this release also offers optional English subtitles. Extra features offer a unique "Jump to a Nightmare" scene navigation option, an original theatrical trailer, and the DVD-ROM options of reading the original screenplay as you watch the feature, as well as a trivia game and up-to-the-minute information on cast and crew.

Freddy vs 'Dream' Team

A lot better than second Elm Street, but still not as good as the first one. This time Freddy may have met his match with some dreamers who know how to control their dreams.

Freddy Krueger returns (sans creator Wes Craven) for more terror in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Pt. 2: Freddy's Revenge. New Line has done a great job on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. While there are a few areas that tend to look slightly murky, overall this is an excellent transfer with vibrant colors and well-saturated black levels. Also included on this disc is a pan-and-scan version of the film. The audio is presented in a newly remixed 5.1 soundtrack (as well as the original 2.0 soundtrack). This new mix is good, even if the source materials are a bit dated. Surround usage is present in many different scenes through both the front and rear speakers. Except for some harshness in the dialogue, this mix is free of excessive distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc are English captions. The only extra features available on this edition of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Pt. 2: Freddy's Revenge are some cast and crew bios, the original theatrical trailer, and some DVD-ROM content. While this disc has some nice video and audio portions, the box set of all seven films is recommended for the full effect.

Not as great as the first Elm Street, maybe because Freddy has more line, but yet this is a good scary movie.

Classic Nightmare

This movie started a decade of sequels, and thats before special effects were computerized. This movie made some adults scared to sleep at night, so of course this is greatness. Although it got worse with every sequel being more comical than scary, but Elm Street set the standard for horror flicks.
