Panoramic 3D surround sound without limits. Experience movies, music and games with sound that puts you right in the middle of theaction, thanks to 880W of total output power and thunderous bass from the 10” subwoofer. The JBL Bar 1000 has MultiBeam and four up-firing drivers—two in the bar and two in the detachable battery-powered surround speakers—to envelop you in a sphere of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X 3D surround sound with a wide, spacious soundstage with no need to draw extra cables. You’ll never miss a word with our PureVoice technology, which makes sure the dialogue is clear even when other sounds are at their loudest. When you’re ready for some music, stream your favorite playlist from AirPlay, Alexa Multi-Room Music (MRM), and Chromecast built-in and it’ll feel like the band is right there. Have a great night out without leaving your living room.

Nice. I have had a few soundbars over the years but this one is the best one yet. It's my first one from JBL though I have owned a few of their other products and enjoyed them as well. They have a longstanding reputation for being one of the best (THE best IMO) speaker companies around. Sorry bose, you're good too but you're not jbl. I also have had some altec (lansing) speakers which are great too but partly due to their affiliation with jbl. Enough with the history lesson; if you want to know more look it up.
OK so I hope we've established that I like jbl and if they make something it must be (better be) good. Yeah I probably use parentheses too much too. (I think I spelled that right.) Don't fall asleep yet I'm almost to the review.
This thing is loaded up with everything (no kitchen sink included though) that you might currently want from a soundbar. I hesitate to call it a soundbar because it seems much more than that. Ok so it's not quite as good as my $5000 plus or my $10,000 plus audio/surround systems (I likes my audio) but it's still good for around $1000 and doesn't require a genius or a ton of cables to hook it up. Quality cables for high end systems can get pretty expensive nowadays.
I really like the detachable surround speakers which can be used wirelessly and placed wherever you like and can be recharged with usb c or by docking them to the soundbar. They sound good for their small size. The system allows you to calibrate them if you change their location but that's really up to you.
Also has a pretty massive subwoofer that gives you plenty of bass for movies or music. I'm currently using it in a medium size spare bedroom but it can get loud if you want to use it in a bigger space. Nice app for your phone too which adds a few more features.
Get one. Your neighbors may not like it unless you invite them in to jam down or watch some movies.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Nice tablet

I have owned several tablets over the years all of them android except one with windows mobile. Sorry but no apple products for me thank you.
This is easily the best one I've owned yet; though it's not quite perfect it is pretty close. It's also the most expensive. My other ones were mostly cheap models but were ok in their day. I was still using a couple of them that weren't that old yet but I think this one will be my go to tablet for awhile.
I really like the speaker dock which makes a great stand as well as charging it. The sound is pretty good, a little better than the built in speakers but it's not stereo like the four speakers in the tablet so no separation. I wish they had made the dock sound a bit better. Some dual speakers with stereo (and maybe a subwoofer) would certainly help when listening to music. As is it's fine for casual listening but when I play music it makes me want to connect to my external bluetooth system. (are you listening Google?) They could make a nicer dock and make it available separately for picky users.
Great as a hub for google home devices. Also works well with Pixel phone as well as other android phones. It's fast too with good battery life and pretty fast charging. No sd slot for adding memory but 128G built in should be enough for most users. They also sell a 256GB model for a bit more if you need it.
A lot of great features which will likely get even better with time. Android fans will like it and it may even convert some apple users as well.

It's really pretty good but maybe a bit pricey now. If they put it on sale it could get more stars. I've had a lot of power strips/surge protectors/ac filters over the years, some much more expensive and several somewhat less expensive so I guess it's kind of in the middle area. None of my others had usb ports on them though so I guess that's a plus. It is pretty convenient to have 4 usb ports and not have to use adapters for them. I just wish they would have included a couple more regular ac outlets since it only has four of them as well so it seems somewhat like a compromise rather than a bonus.
The rotating outlets are a nice feature since they allow you to position your other adapters for convenience but still not a lot of space between them so your bulky adapters may or may not fit like you would expect them to. You could put one on the end but it may cover a couple of the usb adapters which are actually on the end of the strip. They should have put the usb adapters on the side or somewhere that they wouldn't get blocked.
Kind of flashy looking so if you want a stylish power strip you might like it. I personally prefer function over looks when it comes to power strips especially since they always have a bunch of wires sticking out of them. I think I prefer a rack mount style with the outlets on the back so the cables don't show so much.
Well I think I may have talked myself out of liking this much. It does supposedly have power filtration which is helpful for some uses like audio and maybe video but if you're using it for that I would get something better. Also claims a $10,000 equipment warranty but good luck collecting on that. "Limited" lifetime warranty as well but if they're not around in a few years what then?
If you can get it cheap on sale it may be a good deal. At full price though there are better options out there.

Poop (and pee) in here cat!
on June 28, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
Well, I've had this for two weeks now but my cat hasn't used it yet. I tried the suggested procedures to begin with and finally removed her old box (which she seemed to enjoy using and marking with her smells) but with the warm weather we are currently experiencing she apparently prefers going outside to do her business.
Her background may explain some of the situation. I didn't really plan to have a cat but a few years ago she started appearing in my backyard. My mom was always a cat freak so as a kid we always had several cats and I had been accustomed to them as friends as well as helping to care for them. When this cat (my cat?) started showing up in my yard I assumed she belonged to one of my neighbors and tried to make friends with her but she would always run away. That is until July 4th started to get near and my neighbors would start shooting off fireworks. On July 3rd she suddenly became very friendly and apparently decided to adopt me. I guess she had been a stray/feral cat for awhile but was unsure about me until then. I was a bit surprised but felt sorry for her so I let her stick around. She's a real sweetie so you can probably guess the rest.
I was working at the time (I'm retired now) so I would always make sure she was out of the house when I left for work but when I got home she was usually waiting for me. I guess someone had trained her to use a box since she was glad to use it when inside. But she had been outside for a long time and so was used to the outdoors as well.
I expect she will eventually start using this litter box especially when the weather starts changing but for now she seems content to go outside. She's not really afraid of it as I have put her in it several times but she just won't go in it yet. She just jumps back out a few seconds after I put her in.
The Litter Robot seems well made and should contain the litter and smells much better than a basic box. She used to make quite a mess trying to bury her stuff in her old box getting litter all over the floor. This will be much more convenient since it deposits the wastes directly into a bag and the app will tell you if it starts to get full. (You can always check it manually as well.)
It is a bit pricey so you have to decide if you really want to invest the amount to save scooping and cleaning up from a regular box but it seems worth it to me (assuming my cat will start using it). If you have more than one cat or plan to get another then it's almost a necessity. The accessories available from whisker look nice too but not really required, you can use regular clumping(?) clay litter and regular trash bags with it.
Pretty fancy toilet for a cat but convenient for a cat owner. You could maybe teach your cat to use your toilet but I don't really want to share mine with my cat.

Good choice

I would actually give this a 4.5 star rating but no half stars available here. This is a nice low to midrange desktop computer with good specs but may need a few upgrades for picky users. It does have a few upgrade options but somewhat limited. It comes with a nice thirteenth gen I5 processor which is actually pretty fast with lots of cores and threads etc. Good graphics with the onboard intel graphics though not really made for gaming. It does have a display port which gives you up to 4k or the hdmi which is only good to 1080p or both for dual displays. There is a slot for a dedicated graphics card but I'm not sure why since the included power supply can't support it and upgrading the power supply seems difficult at best if not excessive. If you require a dedicated graphics card I would recommend something else.
Only comes with 8 Gigs of ddr4 ram which is ok for normal use but power users will want more especially since the graphics need some of the ram shared. Has one stick of ram with another slot open so easy to add more (up to 64g according to Dell). Be sure to get ddr4 (preferably 3200 mhz) since ddr5 uses a different slot and so isn't backward compatible.
Also comes with a 512 gb ssd which is nice but if you need more it has connectors for a sata drive. It does have another m.2 slot but it's a small one and is used for the wireless card. You could replace the existing ssd but you would need some way to transfer the os to it.
I like that it has an optical dvd drive built in especially since I have a ton of music cd's that I'm gradually converting to mp3 so no external drive needed.
Also comes with a nice full size keyboard and mouse though nothing fancy (wired with no back lighting). I'm a bit spoiled with backlit keyboards but they should get you up and running. I do like the mouse. You will need a monitor though.
Runs cool, I never felt any heat coming from the vents. Seems like good quality from Dell at a good price. If you need a good computer but not really for gaming this is a good choice.

Good chromebook
on April 24, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
Good somewhat basic chromebook. I had a hard time deciding whether to give it 4 or 5 stars so I guess 4.5 might be more accurate. It has a lot of good points and a few minor not so good points though the more I use it the better I like it.
If you've used a chromebook before you probably know what to expect. If not but want to try one out this is a good choice. Android phone users should find it easy to adapt. A google account helps to get the most out of it but it's not really required.
This is my 3rd chromebook. I also have a 12" which is very portable but a bit small for me. My other one is a 17" which is nice but a little big and bulky. This one at 15.6" seems just right and is still very portable. They all have good battery life though this one is better than the 17" and is really good for its size and touch screen. It's a good touch screen which is a nice extra at this price. Doesn't fold back to act like a tablet though. It seems really lightweight and even comes with a nice sleeve to make it more portable.
Two usb c ports either can be used for charging with the usb c charger. Also 2 usb a ports. No sd card slots for expansion but you can add a flash drive for more storage. Not a big deal really but something to be aware of. Numeric keypad included if you do a lot of number crunching. I have mixed feelings about the numeric keypad since I don't really use it much and it seems to throw my typing off a bit because it moves the regular keys off center. I guess it's nice to have though if you want it.
Not the newest processor or the most storage space but still seems pretty fast. A google account gives you online storage or again you can use a flash drive. Not a backlit keyboard which would be nice but none of my chromebooks have that feature.
If you want a windows laptop then this probably isn't for you. But if you have a nice windows laptop and just want something useful for internet use and portability or just a change this is a good choice at a reasonable price.

Nice fan
on April 19, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
Good fan at a reasonable price. Yes it's mostly plastic but seems sturdy enough and moves a lot of air. The fact that it's mostly plastic makes it lightweight and probably saves some money. I have an older fan that's also 16" but has a lot of metal and it is much heavier and awkward to move around. This one is much lighter and seems far more portable yet still seems to move the same amount of air.
Strangely mine was delivered open, both the outer carton and inner carton appeared to have been cut open at the tape. I was immediately concerned that some of the parts would be missing. There was no apparent damage to the box it just looked like someone had opened it. I'm pretty sure fedex wouldn't have accepted it for shipping open like that so I assumed someone had opened it after it was shipped. Luckily all the parts were still there and wrapped in their plastic like no one had removed any of them. Some parts were already installed so look for them in their installed position before assuming they are missing.
Fairly easy to assemble and looks good. It's just a basic fan with 3 speeds, no smart functions or remote. Quiet and moves air well with or without oscillate. Big enough for a larger room.
The six blade design makes for a smaller profile while still moving the same air as a larger 4 blade fan. Also probably helps keep it quieter. Seems well made and should last a while.

Really good cordless clippers
on April 12, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
Great hair clippers and cordless/rechargeable as well. I have been cutting my own hair since I was a teenager (40+ years) and these are by far the best clippers I've used yet. They easily outperform my old corded clippers but are far more convenient without the cord to try to keep out of the way or needing an outlet nearby while cutting my hair. You can even use them outdoors weather permitting if you don't want to clean up the cut hair afterwards.
I have used many clippers over the years but they were always corded ones. Yes I have had a few professional haircuts as well but was never satisfied with the results since they always seemed to only look good for the first day. One wash and they seemed to get unruly and not worth the trouble. I have thick curly hair, the kind a barber friend of mine said "gives a barber nightmares". The cord was always a pain.
These mowed right through my long winter hair which I had let grow during the winter months mainly because it helped me stay warmer. Now it's spring and the warm weather means it's time to keep it short again.
These are my first cordless clippers and I wasn't sure what to expect but they worked great. If you cut your own hair cordless is far easier. These are very quiet as well. Almost silent, you can barely tell they are on. Good battery life, you could probably get two or three haircuts per charge, maybe more if you're fast. Comes with everything you need including a nice bag to hold it all. Yes it's micro usb charging but that's ok for me since I still have several micro usb chargers. Be sure to use a few drops of the oil on the blades each time to help keep them sharp.

Good modern router
on March 24, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
I got much better results than I expected. I admit my old router was getting pretty outdated but it still seemed to work ok though recently my internet speeds were getting slower. I just attributed the problem to the addition of several smart devices to my network which were dragging it down but as it turns out my 10+ year old router was a big part of the problem. I think it only had support up to wireless n (or maybe even worse?) and certainly not wifi 6 which is relatively new compared to my old router.
I have a couple of newer laptops which I use most of the time which have support for wifi 6 so I thought maybe it was time to upgrade my router to a wifi 6 one to see if it was better. I'm very glad I did since according to the internet speed test I use my download and upload speeds are much higher with this one compared to my old router. I even switched back to my old one several times for reference and this one consistently showed a big speed improvement. Of course your actual download speeds are somewhat dependent on the source of your downloads but so far I have noticed a significant difference.
The range of this router is only slightly better than my old one but my old one did have pretty good range. This one does have better range which I kind of needed since I recently started using a spare bedroom as an office/game room that is further from the router. Your actual range is somewhat dependent on the receiving device but this router does do a little better and covers my house well and my yard too.
Wpa 3 security incuded which is currently the latest available. I had to go into the settings to enable it (wpa 3 + wpa 2 for backward compatibility). Really pretty easy to setup with more advanced features also available. You can set it up via your web browser on your pc or with the app on your phone.
If you're currently using an old router but your pc supports wifi 6 (and your router doesn't) you should definitely consider this router to help your speed and congestion problems especially with all the newer smart devices that want to compete for your wifi connection. It has worked well for me. Best Buy also sells more expensive TP-Link routers which may extend the range even more if you have a large house or just want to use it down the street.

Good addition to oral hygiene
on March 18, 2023
Posted by: InspectorGadget
This is my first experience with a "water flosser" so I figured Waterpik brand was a good choice since they seemingly created the device and are the most well known. I don't know about most people but I hate having food stuck between my teeth after eating. I almost always use a toothpick after meals to get rid of the food stuck there and usually floss with a string type floss at some point before brushing.
I had often thought about trying a waterpik but never did mainly because they seemed so bulky and a bit of a hassle. Now that they have cordless ones the bulk and hassle has been greatly reduced so I figured it was time to give it a try. Also with age you begin to appreciate your teeth a bit more and want to preserve them to enjoy eating the foods you love.
This one is a good choice if you want a convenient way to floss with a small size and a minimum of headaches. It may not replace my toothpicks for immediate relief after a meal but it makes a good addition to my routine and will likely reduce my need for string flossing. I like to use it with mouthwash which waterpik says is ok if you mix with water in a 1:1 ratio. It helps clean and gives you fresh breath just rinse it out with water afterwards. If you already use mouthwash this makes it work even better with minimal added hassle.
Good pressure even on battery power it's rechargeable with included accessories. Small in size and great for travel. I wish they included a carrying case but no you have to provide that at least for now. I would probably give it 5 stars if it came with a case or bag. It may not replace some of your current oral hygiene methods (but it might) though it will certainly enhance and improve them at a reasonable price.

Good game.
By YaNinja
The game is really really fun to play 2 players against the computer once you unlock the characters by earning points. It does play a little bit clunky (for example sometimes a player will get hit up and be in the air for way too long). Overall a really fun game, if you love anime you'll probably love this.
