Stylish, well-made; charges 7 devices at once
on June 20, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
If you are tired of that rat's nest of charging bricks and cords associated with one or more outlets in your house, the Revolve 45 may provide a solution.
This compact, four-outlet surge protector is built with power bricks in mind. All the outlets are not only spaced wider to make it easier to plug in multiple bricks at the same time but also rotate them up to 360 degrees to accommodate a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
Even better, this unit includes three more smart charging ports across the top -- two USB A and one USB C. They can provide up to 45 watts of power so might allow you to dump some of big bricks that now clog up your outlets.
Take the power output rating with a grain of salt, though, since how much you get from each USB port depends not only on the devices you are using but how many you are charging at the same time. To get the full 45 watts, you must use ONLY the USB C port and cable it to a device that will accept that much power, like a Mac Book Air or a Samsung Galaxy S 22+.
With all ports in use, the two USB As can produce 12 watts each and the USB C outputs 30 watts max. And even those numbers are conditional, since the device being charged must be compatible with the charger as well.
I have Samsung Galaxy S 20FE phone that is capable of super-fast charging, but will only fast-charge using the built-in USB C port on the Resolve 45. So while the charging ports will charge, they may not always do so at the fastest rate possible.
The company says the Revolve45 uses "Charge Sense" and related technology to deliver the correct amount of power, regardless of the number and device used. Of course, if you are using your own power bricks, you don't need to worry about any of this. That's what the four outlets are for.
One other big plus with the Resolve 45 is that it provides limited surge protection for everything attached to it. It is rated at 1080 joules (in the recommended range for small electronics) with a clamping voltage of 500V. A blue light at the bottom tells you that it is working (If it goes out, the company says the surge protection has been "used up.") There's also a green light at the bottom to tell you the outlet is properly grounded. A grounded three-prong outlet is required to use this device.
The overall design of the Resolve 45 is bit sleeker than your average gang outlet. Instead of being a basic box, this stylish white number has all the hard corners rounded off. And there is even a little shelf built into the top of the unit, where you can place your phone while it is being charged. The patented rotating outlets, by the way, are unique to the Revolve 45 and other products made by its manufacturer, Salt Lake City-based 365
As for installation, that's easy. Just remove the single screw holding your outleft cover in place, plug in the Revolve 45 and tighten the built-in center screw. It holds the unit firmly in place (essential with lots of bricks plugged in ) and replaces the cover plate screw you removed.

Overall, the Resolve 45 is a very good unit. It seems to be well-build, providing lots of flexibility and perhaps much more order, when charging multiple devices at the same time. And surge protection is a big bonus.
Recommended.

Fast desktop powerhouse is ready for anything
on June 3, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
It seems hardly anyone wants a big desktop computer anymore but if you need rhe power and flexibility one of these big rigs offers, it's hard to go wrong with this new Dell XPS 8960.
It is brimming with the latest tech, including the latest generation Intel Core i7 GPU, a 500GB SSD and 2TB HDD for plenty of storage, 16 gigs of RAM and a blazing-fast Nvidia RTX 3050 graphics card.
Add in a large collection of USB ports, almost every type imaginable; DisplayPort and HDMI ports for the latest monitors ; and full WiFi 6 and ethernet support and you are ready to take on the world.
With this much power under (or on) your desk, it's hard to think of any chore this computer cannot take on, and will likely do it without breaking a sweat. Even tough jobs like video editing and other demanding content creation are a breeeze thanks to the excellent combination of high-end components.
Playtime might be enjoyable too thanks to the new-genration Nvidia RTX video card, which has the power to keep frame rates high and gameplay nice and smooth. Sure, it's not the fastest gaming video card on the block but can handle most games with no issue. And is a good all around card for work and play.
This Dell XPS comes packaged in a sturdy black metal case, which features Dell's usual understated styling. Like most previous XPS models, the front is a big slab of brushed dark aluminum that features a SD slot (increasingly rare these days), a headphone jack, three USB A ports and one USB C port. All are 3.2 gen 1 except for the C port, which is Gen 2 and has power share capabilites.
There are five more USB ports in back, including one USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 for those who need the absolutely fastest transfer speeds.
The once common DVD or Blu-ray burner drive is absent, the norm on most desktops these days. But there is an empty bay inside the case for an an extra HDD, for those who really need a lot of storage for large video files, massive numbers of photographs and audio files.
Speaking of inside, there is also an unused PCI slot (two of the three slots are used up by the video card) but no extra slots for memory, so if you need to upgrade to 32 gigs of RAM, you will have to dump the two 8 gig sticks already installed and replace them with two 16 gig sticks.
Getting inside is easy, by the way, thanks to Dell's innovative latch design. Just lossen the lone phillips screw on the black tab on the back of the case and pull. This releases the tab that holds the side panel in place.
Everything inside is nicely organized and tidy, leaving plenty of room to make any kind of modifications you might have in mind. Massive but very quiet cooling fans on the CPU and case keeps everything inside nice and cool.
The only real demerits here go to the keyboard and mouse, which are both wired USB versions , a bit disappointing for a computer at this price point. (Dell does make a more expensive XPS version that does have a wireless mouse a keyboard). While the wires are unsightly, and the construction somewhat cheap, the chicklet style keyboard and optical mouse are full size and work well, at least. Two old-style USB 2 ports in the back mean you don't have to tie up your faster USB ports with the mouse and keyboard.
Bottom line:. This is a very nice all-around desktop performer, with plenty of power to handle almost any task you want to throw at it.

Beauty and the beast
on May 19, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
It is hard not to be impressed by this new Asus Vivobook laptop.
The OLED screen is gorgeous, of course, thanks in part to the screaming fast nVidia GeForce RTX Studio graphics chip powering it. The internal specs are impressive too, with a powerful 13th generation Intel Core i7 chip providing the overall horsepower, a superfast NVMe 500G SSD providing storage and a hefty 16G of DDR5 RAM installed to keep all the programs running smoothly.
Never mind all the little things, like support for the latest and greatest WiFi 6E routers (which support the new less crowded 6Ghz band), Dolby Atmos sound (the best I heard on any laptop) , a self-adjusting backlit keyboard, and a battery that provides up to 8 hours of run time.
There's a fingerprint reader on the off/on button too, for easy log in. Or you can use facial recognition, if you prefer. That's supported too using the laptop's built in camera. The computer is even clad in a special silver ion "antibacterial guard" coating that promises to inhibit 99 percent of all bacterial growth for at least three years.
I have never seen that before. (Although it does attract smudges and fingerprints rather easily)
But this does not mean there are not a few beastly blemishes to mar this high tech beauty. And that has mostly to do with a somewhat cumbersome and clunky setup experience.
That process took much longer and was more tedious that it once was, in part because installing Windows and Asus's own support software involves going through endless screens basically asking you permission for them to monitor everything you do 24/7. Some are obvious permission requests, because they claim they are concerned about your privacy. Some are disguised as "free" offers for something, which almost always are free because you first have to give somebody permission to monitor everything you do 24/7. Every web site you visit. Every program you run, and for how long. Everything you say, even. Laptops have cameras and microphones, after all. Just say "no."
Sadly, if you care about your privacy, you have no choice but to proceed slowly through this minefield. You have to read every option carefully and turn off as much as possible as you go.
But that is only the first step in the not-so-pleasant setup process. The next is simply gaining basic functionality, like getting a mouse to work. Most people use wireless mice these days but they wont work on this Vivobook during setup. At least not by just plugging them the wireless transceiver (as has been the case with every other new laptop I set up recently.) Windows typically automatically downloads the drivers for such devices but did not with my Logitech wireless mouse. I had to go out find the software myself, and manually download and install it.
Short of that, you must use a wired mouse or the built-in touchpad (I hate touchpads). Annoying.
And here's something else odd: This laptop has a backlit keyboard. But it was off by default during setup. And it was not at all clear how to turn it on. Who thought this was a good idea? Interestingly, the camera and microphone were ON by default, but there is no way to tell that. I later found the function buttons that control them have little indicator lights embedded in them, but they only come on when the devices are off, not on. The opposite of what you would expect.
Eventually you get to the point where you have to install all the Windows updates, which were somewhat slow to appear and download. Some of these updates are quite large so this can take quite a bit of time. Several reboots are necessary to get everything installed and working. This is standard fare on most new machines.
I thought I was done with setup at that point but then noticed, in digging around the Windows update section, there were some buried "optional" updates that were quite important. One was an Asus firmware update, and those usually contain critical fixes to the BIOS. So I got that installed too.
Finally, you really need to install the MyAsus software, which provides a lot of useful tools to control and monitor of all aspects of the laptop. But that also requires you register, set up a name and password. OK. Phew! Done at last.
Once up and running, this Vivobook is truly a delight to use. It is superfast, and the OLED screen provides the best image quality you have probably ever see on a laptop. (Although this option is becoming more common on high-end models) Bright vivid colors. Amazing contrast. True blacks. Video and games look amazing. OLED can't be beat when it comes to image quality.
Since this is an OLED screen, you have a lot of options to tweak it, including overall color options that range from vivid to muddy looking. (Turn on HDR, which is supported on this laptop, if you prefer colors muted and an overall dark cast to everything. I am not sure why anyone would want that, but it is available)
There are lots of controls related to protecting the OLED screen from burn in, the one big disadvantage of this technology. Any image that remains in one place, unmoving, for a very long time (like the Windows taskbar) may leave a ghost of the image burned into the screen. So take advantage of the tools provided in the MyAsus app to prevent that.
One other caveat regarding the screen. Like most OLEDs, it is very shiny and therefore more prone to reflection issues than other laptop screens. But in actual use, I did not find this to be a major issue.
While you are browsing the MyAsus app, be sure to look at the audio controls. Dolby Atmos is supported but turned off by default (for known reasons) so be sure to turn that on first. It provides a lot of extra depth and the illusion of side speakers if the audio source supports surround sound effects.
Power users also are likely to be impressed with graphics capability of this Vivobook, since the nVidia GeForce RTX Studio setup turns the laptop into something more akin to a powerful workstation. Photo and video editors will find things move along a lot faster than they might expect using a laptop. And that same power makes gaming a lot more fun as well, since everything moves smoother and faster.
The only thing unimpressive about this Asus Vivobook is the housing, which is little more than a big slab of black plastic. No metal accents, no textured designs, no lighted logos.
But this is one laptop where it really is what's inside that counts.

HP Hearing PRO Self-Fitting OTC Hearing Aids are innovative products that look nothing like a traditional hearing aid. Built to medical device standards and meeting all FDA requirements for safety and efficacy, the HP Hearing PRO features Ear ID™ self-fitting software and technology powered by Nuheara. Ear ID™ has been clinically proven to be substantially equivalent to a professionally-fit hearing aid. The proprietary Ear ID™ software tests the wearer’s individual hearing thresholds from low frequency to high frequency in each ear, then automatically programs the HP Hearing PRO hearing aids for each ear. This ability for the consumer to self-fit through the HP Hearing application, for iOS and Android platform mobile devices, allows a quick and easy acclimation experience for the consumer. The entire acclimation experience takes about 10-15 minutes from unboxing through customization of the user’s personalized profile to accommodate their perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. In addition to the HP Hearing PRO’s capabilities as an OTC hearing aid, this innovative product streams media and phone calls via Bluetooth®. The Active Noise Cancellation minimizes background noise for an immersive sound experience when streaming phone calls or music. Additional features include an HP Hearing app for iOS and Android, Rechargeable built-in Li-ion batteries, and Charge Case for on-the-go charging Most importantly, the HP Hearing PRO has been clinically validated through research completed by the National Acoustic Laboratories to provide a 30% speech understanding improvement in the presence of noise using the directional microphone feature called Focus. This is a significant benefit for consumers in restaurants or social situations where background noise makes understanding speech difficult. Now, at the touch of the HP Hearing app, a wearer can switch the directional microphone settings to Focus on sounds towards their front, quickly allowing for immediate improvement in speech understanding.

Best OTC performance, feature set and app
on May 10, 2023

In the ever expanding uinverse of over-the-counter hearing aids, the unusual HP Hearing Pro earbuds are best I have tried.
I call them unusual because the form they take is more like your standard bluetooth earbud than a hearing aid. Those come in a lot shapes and sizes but thie HP model is the only one I have seen with this particular form factor.
That's both good and bad.
The good news is they are easier to handle, mostly because they are just bigger. That's important for older folks with poor eyesight and limited motor skills. Those tiny in-the-ear-canal models, for example, can be a challenge for such people.
There's also no tiny controls to worry about. There is not even an on-off switch. Take them out of their case and they are on, put them back and they are off. Otherwise, you just stick them in your ears and then tweak the volume and sound environment with the HP Hearing smartphone app. That's also needed for the initial setup, providing customized performance for your particular hearing loss. That turns out to be pretty easy too, with a series of simple tone tests for each ear.
You have to pair them with your phone but the app is easier than most, in part because it requires no registration, no name and password, before you use it.
But the most important good news is they just work better than the other models I have tried, providing a more natural sound boost and a lot less of the squealing, and raspiness common in a lot of hearing aids.
They do generate a sound akin to chirping birds if you crank up the volume too much but that is far less annoying than the continous feedback squeal common in other hearing aids.
The bad news? Ironically, one of biggest is that they are , well, big. That means they are pretty obvious when you are wearing them. And let's face it, not the most attractive fashion accessory. Most people don't want to adverstise they are heard of hearing.
The only good news here is they might be mistaken for regular old bluetooth earbuds, which many people wear to just listen to music. Or talk on the phone. And you will be happy to know these hearing aids can perform both of those functions too. So they are a bit of a multi tasker. (Just tap the left bud to answer the phone.)
Getting the right fit also might be an issue with some people. The HP Hearing Pro comes with pretty large selection of ear pieces, from small to large and from silicone to memory foam. So they try to accommodate everyone. But if you are like me and have never found an earbud that is comfortable, you might have the same problem here.
These have to be jammed in pretty tight to work right and that can be pretty uncomfortable over time since they are rather large. But you can easily pop them in and out as needed.
One big plus with the HP Hearing Pro earbuds is they are rechargable. There are no tiny batteries to buy or install. The somewhat bulky case they come in serves as a wireless charger. It can store power and charge the buds even if not plugged in but must eventually be recharged using any USB charger. A USB-A to USB-C cable is included to connect the case to a charger but a USB charge is not included.
The buds run for up to 8 hours on a single charge and can be recharged in 3 hours.
As mentioned earlier, the intial setup process is pretty easy, although the app does throw up some roadblocks if you fail to hear all of the tones the app generates at the beginning of the testing process. It then suggests the buds are not properly seated in your ears and urges the user to try a different earpiece.
But it may be you just have lousy hearing. If so, skip over this step (the app allows that at some point) and proceed with the testing. Once completed, the app displays a graphic (dubbed hearing ID) that shows the level of hearing loss and at which frequencies, for each ear. That is a nice touch.
The user can then decide whether to put the buds into a broad "world" environment mode, for general use, or focused one, for talking to nearby people in noisy environments. Both work well.
The buds operate in active noise cancelation mode when both world and focus settings are off. Which I assume is most useful if you are using the buds to listen to music.
Overall this the best of he over-the-counter hearing aids I have tried and worth a look if you are beginning to suffer from hearing loss.

Checks all the boxes for he gaming crowd
on May 9, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
Most people regard PC monitors as very utilitarian devices -- used mostly just to show text, simple graphics and perhaps some videos.
Not gamers. Their gaming rig PCs are all about performance and style. And that's probably why HP makes the Omen 27qs -- a tricked out hot rod of a PC monitor if there ever was one.
On the performance side, the specs are all pretty impressive. Like a 240Hz max refresh rate and 1ms response time, with nVidia G-sync support for the fastest and lag free gameplay. Also helping out on that front is a QHD screen, which has about double the resolution of most PC monitors.
Overall picture quality is top notch too, thanks in part to full VESA HDR 400 certification and a very bright IPS screen, which provides a wider viewing angle. (So your friends standing around you during gameplay can better appreciate your gaming prowess.) Colors are vivid as well since this is a DCI-PC3 monitor (a spec that promises more colors and and better color saturation than lesser monitors)
But this monitor is not just about pretty pictures and fast gameplay. The hardware built into it also goes far beyond what you see in a typical PC monitor. Like two HDMI 2.0 ports and one 1.4 DisplayPort for a top quality connection to any graphic card. And two super speed USB ports, which turn the monitor into a USB hub. (A USB to PC cable and DisplayPort cable are included)
Of course, gamers want lots of glitz on their PC components too, even the monitor. So the HP Omen 27 qs features special lighting effects on the back: A rope light that wraps around the mounting bracke. It defaults to bright white but can be any color and intensity you want, or can cycle between multiple colors.
That's controlled by HP's Gaming Hub software, which downloaded automatically on my Windows 11 computer after I attached the monitor. The same software includes Lighting Studio, which allows you to apply uniform lighting effects to the monitor and all other lighting-capable components attached to the PC.
The Gaming HUB is actually a collection of many gamer-oriented programs that do a lot more than just control the monitor. It can also give your PC and provide a quick performance tuneup and even rid it of junk files taking up valuable SSD space. All to make the games run at peak efficiency.
The Hub program also makes it easier to find, download and launch PC games, a nice touch for the gaming crowd.
As if that were not enough, the monitor also features decent sounding dual 3-watt speakers, a rarity on most computer monitors. Most gamers probably have a high-end audio system attached to their rigs, but built-in speakers are good in a pinch, or for normal PC chores.
The HP Omen 27 qs is a surprisingly sturdy piece of hardware, weighing far more than you would expect for a monitor of this size -- about 20 pounds. That's mostly due to the very heavy base, which provides a rock solid foundation for the monitor. You won't see any wobble during heavy game play with this monitor. Even better is an internal spring-assisted slide mechanism that makes changing the height of the monitor a breeze. And yes, it tilts too. (There is a sutrdy built in 100x100mm VESA mounting plate in the back, for those with wall mounts or multi-moniter setups)
Unlike most new PC monitors, this one is NOT wafer thin. It's quite chubby, in fact, and bulges out about 2 inches at its thickest point. That's probably mostly because of the hefty rear mounting plate built into the Omen 27qs
So sure, it's pretty sweet gaming monitor. But what about routine PC chores? Overall, it is very good on that front too but there are a few issues you need to be aware of.
The first is the result of the QHD screen, which makes everything in Windows look very small in native resolution. The easy solution to that problem is to go into Windows display settings and scale it up to 150 percent. That gets you back to something approaching a normal Windows display size, with readable text and normal looking web pages. The other option is to change the resolution to a standard HD format, which is norm on most PC monitors.
Image purists might also have a few issues with fact this is an IPS screen . The advantage of IPS is provides a wide field of vision but but the downside is it can have trouble producing uniform dark blacks. They can sometimes appear dark gray, instead, depending on the source material.
I could see that in some content but found the overall picture quality quite good. Excellent for standard PC chores (text, web graphics) , very good on video clips and movies. HDR, which this monitor supports, may make it better or worse, depending on content. Just be aware HDR is off by default in Windows and must be turned on in display settings.
All this fancy hardware does not come cheap. But if performance and glitz are your game, you could do worse than the Omen 27qs

An OK multi-device keyboard; setup is cumbersome
on March 29, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
If you have ever wondered why no one has ever built a wireless PC keyboard that will also work with your smartphone, you can stop wondering.
Say hello to Logitech's Slim Multi-Device K585 Keyboard. It does what its name suggests, functioning as a standard keyboard for Windows of Apple PC and doing the same thing with your phone (or newer iPad or Chromebook.)
Setup is not entirely painless (more on that later) but once you get it up and running, it does exactly what it is designed to do without much drama. And without much glitz or glamour either.
Aside from doing double duty on the device front, the Logitech K585 is a pretty basic tool. There is no rechargable battery (although the ones installed on the keyboard are supposed to last 24 months) And no backlight, perhaps the biggest shortcoming for this otherwise capable keyboard.
It is just you basic, compact chiclet style keyboard. Pretty sturdy and well made, as you would expect from Logitech. The lightweight compact design makes it a bit tight for touch typing, but it works. Very quiet on the typing front. But nothing else about the design is out of the ordinary.
The setup process was, however, and not in a good way.

Job 1, trying to decipher the skimpy pictograph laden instruction sheet that comes with the keyboard. (Very good eyesight or magnifying glass required) Let's see, the USB transceiver is hidden inside a little compartment along the top of the keyboard. OK. Plug it into a USB port on the PC and, uh, nothing happens. Unless you happen to know, as a Logitech user, to turn the keyboard on and off to pair it. OK, now it's working.
Sadly, a Logitech wireless mouse that I already owned did not. At least not in the beginning. I had to use a second USB transceiver intially, which was quite annoying. (Multiple Logitech devices usually work off a single "unified transceiver.") But a later update of the Logitech software fixed the problem and both mouse and keyboard now work with the transciever that came with the keyboard.
OK let's pair the phone. That's different because the phone communicates with keyboard via low power Bluetooth. So go to your phone settings, go to bluetooth, scan for new devices.... ahhh, there it is, but it wants me to enter a long number (which does NOT display on the phone for some reason) to pair it. OK. If you type it correctly, you are in business. And yep, typing text messages (or anything else) is a lot easier and faster, at least for me, on this keyboard (I never have mastered that two thumb method using the phone virtual keyboard)
I do not own an iPad or Chromebook so cannot speak to any setup issues there.
A long indentation built into the top of the keyboard allows you prop up your phone there so you can see what you are typing. This "cradle" works well if the phone is on its side but is a bit unstable (or might not work at all) if the phone is in the vertical configuration. Especially if the phone is in a case. Even my very slim case barely fit into the cradle so a bulky one would be a no-go for sure.

Now, about switching back and forth: There are two special buttons on the keyboard for that. The first one is for the PC, the second for the phone (or other bluetooth devices) . Press and hold the button you need for 3 seconds to use the one you want. It works but I found that when switching back to PC, I had to turn the keyboard on and off again to get it come back up. A step I wish I did not have to take.
So, the bottom line: This is a good basic wireless keyboard that seems well-built and works well with both PCs and phones.... once you get through the somewhat cumbersome setup process. But the compact design makes typing a bit cramped for touch typists, and, the process of switching back and forth between devices is a bit clunky. The lack of a backlight also means it is not a good choice if you working in low light situations. And the narrow cradle built into they keyboard may be too small for phones with bulky cases.

Great design, comfortable shave, low price
on January 30, 2023
Posted by: daytonadan
I have been using Norelco electric shavers for decades and have tried lots of them, from very inexpensive to very pricey. But if you just want a basic Norelco model that provides a comfortable, close shave, this 5400 is hard to beat.
Sure, it lacks a lot of the bells and whistles or the fancy sculpted metal exteriors of the more expensive models but, at its heart, it's the same shaver -- at a bargain price.
Let's start with the perfectly shaped ergonomic main body, which fits your hand like a glove. The body is just plastic but that works fine. It wraps around a motor that is probably the same on all models -- Quiet and powerful enough to easily do the job. So all that leaves is the shaving head, which is one area where there are distinct differences between models.
This one has your basic no-frills shaving head with 45 self sharpening blades. There are no fancy "comfort rings" or automatic micro adjustments to customize the shaver head to your face. But, to be honest, you don't really need that because this is plenty good enough to get the job done -- providing the kind of comfortable shave Norelco is famous for, without much fuss.
The 5400 even has something called SenseIQ which automatically provides more power if you have a heavy beard. That's a nice extra at this price point.
As with all other Norelco models, the 5400 has a head and blade housings that flex in a lot of different directions to follow the contour of your face. Dubbed the 360 Contour Head, that has been improved over the years and this latest version works great. There's a built in pop up trimmer too, which is more convenient than the swapable trimmer/shaver heads on some other models.
Cleaning is a breeze since the entire shaver is "showerproof." Just flip open the head and run it under the faucet. That obviously means you can shave wet or dry.
Cordless power is provided by a built -in lithium ion battery, which runs for several weeks between charges. Charging time is about one hour. A three segment battery guage helps you keep track on the charging status.
The only downside to this model is it does not come with a charger, just a USB A cable. But most folks have extra USB chargers from phones and other devices so that probably is not a big deal.
Norelco electric shavers are generally maintenance free, except for regular cleaning and the need to replace the blades once a year. The good news is the cost of replacements for this model is low compared to high end versions.
The bottom line here is if you are in the market good, reliable, comfortable electric shaver, you can't wrong with the Norleco 5400

Old-school design but fast and versatile
on December 13, 2022
Posted by: daytonadan
Consider the desktop computer. Once a high-tech marvel, later just a workhorse for home and office, it now nears extinction.
But not quite yet. Some people still want a bulky desktop tower like this one for its reliability, flexibility and versatility. And this Asus Performance Desktop is certainly a great starting point for those in the market for one.
The "performance" moniker is a little hyperbole, unless this is is the first new computer you have bought in some time. Equipped with the latest 12th generation Intel Core i5 CPU, 8 GB or RAM, 500GB SSD and WiFi 6 network card, it is certainly aa very capable computer. But it's a long way from being a hot rod in the PC universe.
Still, the good thing about a desktop tower is it is designed for easy expandibility and upgradeability. So if you want to add more RAM later, a larger capacity SSD or a faster graphics card, it's easy enough to do. Remove a couple of screws to get inside and start tinkering.
For most people though, this computer is probably powerful enough as is. It will easily tear through basic chores like browsing the Internet, e-mail, word processing, basic spreadsheets and even simple photo or video editing. Videos play just fine too. Only power users, like gamers and those doing large and complex video editing projects, will need more horsepower.
Setup is a breeze, thanks to Window 11, a moderately powerful CPU and a speedy SSD, which is many, many times faster than the old spinning mechanical hard drives. Just answer a few questions (make sure you have your Microsoft and Google passwords ready), download a few updates and you are good to go. It took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. A little longer if you include all Windows 11 updates, which tend to dribble in and require multiple restarts, Rebooting only takes about 10 seconds. (You do need a speedy Internet connection for all those large update files)
One pleasant surprise is how capable the onboard graphics engine proved to be. Most modern CPUs now have that built right in and this one is no exception. In this case, Intel's new UHD 730 GPU. That's the low end of integrated graphics lineup now but still can easily handle routine chores, including playing most video formats. HDMI, display port and VGA ports are built it for your monitor. (Not included)
This Asus desktop has one open full size slot inside for a more powerful video card, if you want to go that route. But the onboard 300-watt power supply can't deal with any card remotely capable of serious gaming, so you would need to swap that out too if you want to upgrade to a gaming rig. Also be aware the included 8GB of RAM is on two sticks that fill both available slots on the motherboard, so if you want to upgrade to 16 or 32GB, you would have to dump the existing RAM and start over.
All these new parts are expensive, so generally speaking, you are better off just buying a gaming rig to start with if you need a computer with that much power. It's almost always a lot cheaper than adding parts or swapping out parts later on a basic computer like this one.
While this PC is very capable, Asus made some odd design choices. The oddest is the inclusion of PS2 ports on the back for a wired keyboard and mouse. I haven't seen any hardware that uses a PS2 connection in decades. But if you have a very old mouse or keyboard that use them, you are good to go.
The included keyboard and mouse, notably, don't have PS/2 connectors. They use USB instead, which has been the norm on computers for some time. But their designs are both quite dated as well, starting with the fact they are wired instead of wireless, now the preferred option. The full-sized keyboard with full numeric keypad is also something of a throwback, with long-throw IBM Selectric type keys instead of short throw chicklet keys. I am old enough to have used the IBM type keyboards when they were standard on typewriters and computers. But again, I haven't seen a computer keyboard of this design in many years. It works fine but is very lightweight, cheaply made and noisy. Lots of clickity, clackity.
One other oddity, which I have never seen before on a stock PC: It comes with a dual band wired external antenna for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5. In this case, the antenna is a thin slab of plastic with a clever hinge in the middle that twists sideways to form an L shape. It's magnetic so you can stick it anywhere on the metal tower case that gives you the best reception. A thin dual-lead wire has little screws on at the end that screw into two little nubs on the back of the computer. It works well enough but I did not find reception was any batter than on other devices I have with no external antennas.
For all you USB fans out there, you will be happy to hear there 8 USB ports on this computer. Half are the more modern USB 3 (or 3.2) type, with the rest USB 2. Four on the front and four on the back. All use the larger USB A ports instead of the more compact USB C.
Finally, there is built in sound, with ports front and back for speakers, headphones and microphones. And slots in the front for an SD card and a "smart card." Not sure what that is used for.
Overall, this Asus Perfomance Tower is a good basic desktop computer that will probably satisfy all but most power-hungry households or businesses.

Works great, easy to install, cheap to operate
on December 13, 2022

Here's another one of those "why didn't somebody think of this before?" products: A motion-activated floodlight with security cam attached.
It's a natural combination and Wyze had done a good job of bringing everything together wih this Wyze Cam Floodlight.
Installation is pretty simple, the floodlights are energy efficient LED and very bright and the security cam and motion sensor provide just the kind of security monitoring lots of folks want.
Even better, Wyze has come up with a pretty affordable way to push the video to the cloud with a pay-whatever-you-want ( including nothing) option. It's quite limited (max video time is 15 seconds) but can provide the bare essentials when you need it for little to no cost.
The somewhat bulky device comes nicely packaged with all the stuff you need to properly mount the Cam Floodlight, including printed instructions (sadly lacking with most electronic devices these days). Still, you need the Wyze app to really use the thing once installed (you cannot setup the camera without it) So it's easier just to download that first and let it walk you through the install, step by step. It's easier to see and there are videos if you really get stuck.
This cam floodlight can be mounted under an eve, the normal spot for most floods, or vertically on the wall (replacing the typical porch light). Installation is straightforward and easy enough that even those with do-it-your-self phobia can probably manage. (assuming you are using this to replace an existing flood or porch light and the wiring and junction box are already in place.)
Turn off the power, connect the color coded wires with wire nuts, attach the cam flood to the wall with a single screw and turn the power back on. The app walks you through connecting the camera to your wi-fi network and choosing the setup options you want.
With a paid Cam Plus cloud storage account (less than $2 a month if paid annually), the cam can be set to detect packages, pets, vehicles and/or people. Sound and smoke detectors also can trigger the camera. The paid account also gives you unlimited recording time and the ability to fast forward through the videos.
If you skip the subscription, the cam is triggered only by motion, sound and smoke detectors and no videos are recorded. Just a snapshot. But you can get up to 12 seconds of video in the cloud each time the sensor is tripped with the pay-whatever-you-want subscription -- dubbed Cam Plus Lite.
Video quality is HD and very good in daylight. But the very bright LED lights can wash out anything close to the camera at night. Try pointing the lights a different direction, or dim them using the app, if this is a problem.
Overall, this is a good choice for those who need the light and security a device of this type provides.

Powerful image tools, but steep learning curve
on November 26, 2022
Posted by: daytonadan
It is hard to imagine there is anything you can't do with your favorite photos or videos with the 2023 versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements.
Those two iconic programs, which for years have been the gold standard in terms image manipulation and output, still constitute the Swiss Army Knife of the realm. If you have enough the skill, there is very little you cannot do, short of producing Hollywood style blockbuster.
Which is not to say it's going to be easy. The sheer depth of each program would probably take years for a novice to fully learn and lots of the getting from point A to point B, even on what should be simple tasks, is lot less intuitive than I would like.
But both programs offer beginner to expert levels of operation that should make it possible for even beginners to crank out finished photo prints, collages or simple videos without too much effort. And if you want to get deep in the weeds and control every tiny detail of every single element, Photoshop and Premiere excel there too.
The number of options on almost every front are almost endless. It can be overwhelming. I mean who even thought of tools to make teeth whiter or to open closed eyes? But those are just two examples of kind of special detail-oriented tools provided in Photoshop.
Fortunately, Adobe has provided lots of tutorials in both programs to walk you through the basics and get you used to the interface, which in itself can be quite intimidating, especially on the Premiere side. Videos are much more complex if you are trying do more than just upload a single unedited video clip to YouTube. Individuals clips must be edited, strung together in the right order, transistions (lots of animated options included) and music added (a nice selection included) along with title and ending screens. It can be very tedious and time consuming, even with a powerful program like Premiere.
Just make sure your computer is up to the task. A powerful processor, lots of RAM and a decent video card are highly recommended, especially when editing video.
Those who don't have a lot of patience may want to start out in the "Quick" mode, where everything is simplified to the maximum degree possible -- with the trade off being you don't have nearly as much control as in the "Guided" or "Expert" modes.
In Premiere, that process includes helping you take the last step of exporting your final video masterpiece to your favorite social media platform. Tools to accomplish that are integrated right into the program so you don't have to save the file first, exit Premiere, and then go into YouTube, for example, to upload the video. Very convenient.
In the end, you can't go wrong with Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, assuming you need that much power and have the time and skill to learn how to use them to their best advantage

I hate I bought this
By TechLover12
Do NOT buy, this item worked great for the first 5 to 6 months then the main adapter stopped working and would not power on. I called customer service who advised me that I would have to pay to ship it back to get a repacement. I thought it was stupid but I did it anyway. It took almost a month to get the replacement and now the replacement has gone out within less than 4 months. I hate that I bought this thing. If I could give this thing 0 stars, I would.

I agree there is an issue of reliability to be considered here. The first set of these I bought lasted four or five years before they suddenly died, a few months apart, as yours did. They worked great until they quit for no apparent reason. I bought a replacement set. One of them died in a few weeks. You might get lucky. You might not. Quality control seems a to be a problem with this company.

Problems updating the map
By Kenny
We have had Garmin Nuvi's before, and love them. I bought this one today (June 26), and it worked right out of the box. But then I went through the online download process through Garmin Express to get the latest map, it appeared to successfully download, but got the message "There was an error installing the update." And now the Nuvi says the map is locked! I tried several more downloads, and kept getting the same error. I will try to contact Garmin tech support, and if they can't help me I will have to return it.

Problem may be Garmin USB cable
December 8, 2016
I had a raft of problems updating maps for many years. It would stop mid update. Lose connection between computer and the GPS. On offf on off. For no apparent reason. Then the map would be corrupt. After many years, I finally discovered the problem was a defective USB cable, the one that came with the Garmin! Hard to imagine how one of these could go bad but obviously a broken or lose connection somewhere inside the cable (defect in manufacturing) , where it is invisible. When I switched to another USB cable, I never had another problem. If you have this issue, throw away the Garmin cable and your problem will be solved.

My 6 year old nuvi is better than this.
By zhadum
I decided to get a new Garmin because my old model didn't have life- time maps. The avoidances on this model don't work well. I had selected to avoid unpaved roads. Not only did this Garmin try to get me to turn on to every unpaved road from my home to my destination. It also wanted me to make a U turn to take a unpaved road. Also it's guidance isn't very good, it had me take a off ramp only to have me immediately get right back on the same highway that I just got off. Also it tried to get me to cross several bridges that haven't been there in years. I contacted technical support and was told that a new map update was released and that would help with the problems so I downloaded the update which said that it would take 3 hours to update but instead it ended up taking 48 straight hours to download the update.

Fast internet essential for map updates
December 18, 2016
If it took that long for you to update maps, you must have dial-up speed internet, ie, less than 1MB per second. That's just not usable in my view but some people limp along on it. But since these mapset updates on the order of about 3 gigabytes in size, it will take forever to download them at that speed. Buyers should be aware that doing map updates is not very practical if you have low speed internet at home.

Great Laptop for beginner
By MikeV
This laptop is very good design and light weight. Internal battery last for a period of time if full charge. Doesn't produce a lot of heat, you barely feel it. Very quite laptop. I gave it 3 stars due to lack of 5Ghz wifi. My 6 yrs old sony vaio even have 5Ghz and this 2016 Lenovo doesn't ?. I just don't understand why this IBM company is doing this. I did a lot of research and found out that IBM puts only 2.4 Ghz card to the laptop. I ended up buying an external wireless adapter to get 5Ghz. Hope this help...Good luck.

Does support 5ghz

.....but only if you go into the wireless adapter settings and turn it on. I too was puzzled why wireless connection was so slow. I have no idea why the stock configuration is with 5ghz turned off but it was. Once I fixed that, I got a strong 430mbs connections with my AC wireless router. On 2.4mghz, it was 150 max I think. Look for the advanced properties settings on the laptops wireless adapter settings.

Great idea, Not 100% solution for me though
By RobWLINY2
I was really hoping to write a short positive review, but there were some issues which I had to share.
I love that this has taken my 3 separate router/access-points each of which had two network names, and managed to put it all on one network name. Unfortunately, for example, my android-based tablet always seems to connect on the (slower) 2.4GHz network and there is no obvious way to fix this (without perhaps forcing the whole network to use 5GHz, which is not an option).
The signal seemed excellent in some areas that had weak signals before.
A few times while using it, it seemed to disconnect wifi, but after 5-10 seconds it would reconnect. This was in a location with 95-100% wifi signal.
Also, Transfering files on my DELL laptop from network drive -- On Velop i was maxing out around 7MB/sec. Compare that to my previous Linksys Router (wired wireless-access-point) which was getting 27MB/sec peak.
I slightly dislike that i needed to buy network switches because the Velop system only has 2 ethernet ports. On the other hand, now that is done and i don't have to think about the number of available ethernet ports on future devices.
My old access points were "wired" to ethernet, and the secondary nodes here don't seem to work that way (other than as bridges maybe?). This has potential performance implications.
The nodes not being wired i perhaps have more freedom to more optimally place them, so there are potential advantages in using this in areas a wired access point cannot be placed..
As per setup, it was "easy" but twice i had to restart setup on a node after it seemed to hang for more than 5 minutes, and one of those times i needed to factory reset a node..

Same issue. Slow speeds within the network
January 11, 2017
I had the same problem. My old Linksys router was much faster in terms of raw megabits per second speeds (sometimes twice as fast) between devices than the Velop system, which seems tuned mostly for streaming internet. You rarely need speeds much above 50mbs for that and Velop can easily handle that If you are moving big files around within your own network, and have AC devices that are capable of 400mbs or more, Velop is NOT a good option.

Deal if its on sale for $200 or Less, Basic Users!
By ItsAdeal from San Jose, Ca
There are lots of 27" monitors to chose from, I chose to replace 2 older 28" lcd monitors with 2 of these primarily for price and use. At the time of purchase this was the best deal I could find anywhere on the web for a 27" monitor. Acer is a good name, I've been using their products for decades with no problems. always out last the warranty. so far!. there's nothing special about these other than the 3 most common inputs included. its few that support DVI, VGA & HDMI in one monitor these days. Mac users can use a Mini display Port adapter to connect. I tested all three inputs with the same source and found both the DVI and VGA performed well and identical in appearance. The HDMI input did not, the image was washed out compared to the other DVI and VGA inputs. Even though I could have tried to adjust the hdmi to match it did not make sense to do so since it performed well with no adjustment on the other 2 inputs.Since I'm using this in a 2 monitor W7setting I chose the DVI and VGA inputs since my graphics card supports all three. So far all is nominal, steam games look fine, basic use is fine too. The one disappointment for Me was when I opened the box and found the external power supply. Its a personal choice but I prefer internal power supplies on monitors (No power brick, Direct from the wall AC plug to the monitor).
I almost returned these due to this, but after looking at the market again I found it would have cost $100 more each to get that feature. I decided to install and test them. I wall mounted these on 2 vesa 100x100 arms with ease. They phyically lok great, thin bezel, thin depth, non glare. I'm Happy! My advice is if You are looking for a 27" and need multiple inputs and can find this for $200 or less its a good deal at this time. Things change so fast however, so look around at the entire market before chosing this monitor, there may be a better deal out there. The next monitors I buy will be 4K once the price comes down. For Now, these will do.

Thanks for the tip on HDMI

I was running my monitor on HDMI and worked for days to get the muddy washed out cast off the screen. Impossible. Then I saw your review, switched to DVI and -- instant improvement!. This is how a monitor should look! Muddy cast gone. Black blacks, white whites. good contrast. No reason this should be but there is no question HDMI connection is the pits. Avoid at all costs. Otherwise, a spectacular monitor for the money, assuming you get in on sale as I did.

I had this same problem. Maddening. Muddy picture. Milky blacks. No contrast. I spent weeks trying to adjust it with only slight improvement. And then I read another reviewer say, "Don't use HDMI." I though he was nuts. Digital is digital right? Apparently not. I switched to a DVI connection and image quality improved 100 percent. Muddy cast disappeared. Black blacks. Decent color saturation. It's not top of the line....still lacking compared to the best monitors. But pretty good. Great for the money if you get it on sale.

Not good for PS VUE
By ates
For most apps and the Amazon prime tv service it works fine. But if you want this strictly for PS VUE then look else where. There is simply too much lag in navigation and using the guide for the true PS VUE experience. It still works but is very slow in operating and navigating. PS VUE is also capped at 30FPS which is noticeable if you watch sports as the video quality is not as smooth compared to the PS4. I would suggest the newest FIRE TV, or NVIDIA SHIELD but that cost $90 and $200, respectively. I would only recommend this if you're not using it for PS VUE.

Would this work with a 1200w window AC? The only other thing that would be potentially plugged into it would be a floor lamp? Thank you!

No. Not ever close. Much more owoer needed for AC units.

From pour-over to French press and every method in between, Ode Brew Grinder brings the café experience to your kitchen. With single dosing, a small countertop size, a magnetically aligned catch and grinds knocker for added cleanliness, Ode turns a morning chore into an elevated experience.

Hi. Since this is sold in America that would imply it is to be used in America. So I was wondering why the specifications here list the voltage requirement as 220v? While I do agree that 220v grid is indeed a better design, I live under tyranny of 120v...

This is a 120 volt design. No 220 needed.

The New Definition of High Definition: This FHD monitor feels as good as it looks, packing IPS technology for 178 degrees ultra-wide viewing angles, 99% sRGB color gamut for color accuracy, and AMD FreeSync to keep your eyes up to speed with your imagination.

how do you connect the monitor to the laptop

If your laptop has an HDMI OUT port, that would work. Many laptops have this. A VGA output would work too but that is less likely to be found on most modern laptops.

I just bought I phone 12 and your 15 watt pad wiaoo2. Your instructions are so small I can’t read. I googled and can’t find answer to What color light should be when I put my phone on top of pad. Right now phone is on pad, no light.

Yeah, amazing they provide no info on this. And the info on the web site is wrong. Light is white when charging and does not change color when charging is complete. .... I think it will turn a different color if something is wrong. It should not be off, unless you have the stand upside down. Make the the wider featureless side is up. The turbine design side is down.

Will this charge if the phone is in its protective case?

Yes, as long as it is not too bulky. My phone has a thin case and it charges fine.
