A Tale of Two Computers

It was the best of times.
It was the worst of times.
I gleefully opened the box for this computer and slobbered with anticipation getting to try this unit - a computer that I had read much about and was enamored with it before using it that I might have been too gleeful.
I'm no novice with computers so hooking up the unit was a breeze and I've seen enough Windows 10 machines that I know the set up routine and how long it should take.
I sat before the screen and pushed the power button and nothing happened on the computer. The monitor kicked in and lit up so I knew there was something happening, but an eternity passed with nothing but a black screen.
I turned the unit off and rebooted. More waiting. I turned it off and turned it back on again - a third time.
I was horrified. I felt like the Great Pumpkin was not going to rise up for me on this Halloween, er, computer unboxing day.
Suddenly error messages flashed on the screen - scan and repair - and then afterwards windows setup finally initiated only to fail and to shut down and reloop - wash, rinse, and repeat.
Finally the windows set up completed and I was finally at desktop.
And nothing - no input could be detected in response for at least 15 minutes. Frustrated, I went to make some coffee.
Finally, the unit would respond - and slowly but surely it got a little faster. It went from a Pentium 150 in response times to about an i3 when it was building up speed.
Windows updated and again the dreaded restart - but this time it managed to go through another scan and went to the desktop with some functionality - it was working, but not like something like this should work.
I used Dell's scanner to review the hard drive's health and it came back "disk drive failure imminent" in red letters! I downloaded Seagate tools and had it do its long scan for over an hour and it would not complete.
Frustrated, I turned it off and went to bed.
Tick, tock, and seven hours later, I went to turn the machine on, and .... it was like a new computer - it was blazing fast - it was like the dream that I had wanted to live!
I repeated the scans from the night before and had the same results. I called Best Buy and let them know what I had found and they contacted Dell and had a new one sent to me.
THE SECOND COMPUTER
This time I approached the box and unpacked it with trepidation - was I going to be sitting in the Pumpkin patch again with no hope of a rising Greatness before me?
I pushed the power button and again the unit sat for about 20 seconds without indicating it was doing anything. I decided that patience would serve me better than to engage in despair, and then the computer started doing its thing - and within 10 minutes from power button to final windows setup, I was at a fully operational desktop that responded with the speed I was hoping for; I did the windows updates and it rebooted and all was well.
I write this because you need to know the truth - the first unit was a dog because of a bad drive - but both Best Buy and Dell went out of their way to make this good. And I sit here writing this because two companies finally showed amazing customer service and went out of their way to make good.
I had long abandoned desktop computers five years ago so I was not prepared for there to be a lack of a drive indicator light that shows you the drive is working (on something). Had there been such a light, I would have been more patient on the first machine. I've noted this issue with Dell so that it can be addressed.
The computer is simply amazing - I dogged it playing some Starcraft II and then later some video editting with output in HD and this thing simply never blinked in the process.
This is NOT an alienware machine - this is a budget gaming computer that can also do video editing work. You will not be disappointed - beef up the ram to 16 gb or up to the 32 max and you'll be very happy.
I did not find this noisy at all - I expect fan noise of some kind - there are two in this unit that I could see and I've had older Dell desktops that were far noisier (not to mention the hurricane sound of the mirror doored mac tower from early in the 21st century). This is a nice compromise.
Please consider this machine - Best Buy and Dell stood by me and made things as pleasant as can be and I know after 25 years of working on computers that hard drives like to pick their own time to go belly up - I don't blame Dell at all.

You get what you pay for with this monitor.
Yes, the price is well above other monitors, but this one packs a 240mhz refresh rate that just helps so much with rapid paced motion games.
Colors are vibrant and it is nice to see a monitor reproduce blacks without making everything so muddy and dark. Nice and vibrant whites as well.
The monitor just looks cool perched on its almost alien like tripod stand and the back of the monitor has aqua/teal colored light inserts that look wicked at night.
Dell/alienware monitors have always been high quality items for me and this should not disappoint others. It simply works and is well crafted to boot.
I cannot wait to go even further with the games because this is just delicious so far - way beyond what I was expecting.

A Very Good Player with Added Features

Note: This player does not come with an HDMI cable.
Installation was straight forward after locating an HDMI cable. I used a hard wired network cable but there is the option of a wireless connection. There are installation instructions provided for ease of set up.
I found the play output of the blu-ray disk (latest "Star Trek") to be very good quality with no delay in response from remote to the player - no stammering or pauses noted (which I've seen in others). Overall, a very responsive unit. Sound is good as well.
I had a chance to try the addons - youtube and netflix and they worked as expected - if you've seen the apps on firestick, this is pretty much the same way here - again no lag with this unit - faster than the firestick 2 that I have.
This rating reflects lack of hdmi cable which seems odd for the cost of the unit and the cost of the cable that could have been provided. There are no significant performance issues here so if you have a spare hdmi cable, this unit should be highly considered.

My initial review of this product was not really positive - I didn't see the point of something like this.
However, after several months, I use this as a speaker for a tablet that uses iheartradio and the speaker is quite good at this application - very portable and holds a charge for at least two nights of play (I listen as I go to sleep).
Bluetooth connects well.
Charging is problematic as it is difficult to get connected, but once you learn, that issue disappears.
I'm not sure if this is worth the price yet, but this seems to have positive aspects that I had not considered in an earlier review.

I initially rated this as a 5 out of 5 stars because it was so much better than the horrific google chromecast (latest version).
I want to update this to warn potential customers that the longer you use this, the hotter the stick becomes and it will shut off and reboot. This is frustrating since it works great when it works.
I ended up taking the black plastic case off the stick because the overheating was becoming problematic - removal of the case (do at your own risk) seems to help with the shutdowns and interruptions being significantly reduced (though not completely solved).
I cannot recommend this product because of the overheating issues.

Disclosure: I had a Mr. Coffee that was perfectly fine when I replaced it with the Coffee Ninja. Comparisons will be noted where appropriate.
The Coffee Ninja looks the part of a premium coffee maker. It arrives well packed and thankfully it has an actual printed instruction manual. You'd be surprised how many new products think everyone can work a smartphone and wants to read tiny print on that screen to learn how to operate a product.
Setup was quite easy following the instructions. As I brew pots of coffee instead of just a cup, I haven't tested the functionality of the ability of the Coffee Ninja to automatically adjust to the difference in brew receptacles.
I like the removable water tank on the Coffee Ninja, but it does not hold as much water as the Mr. Coffee nor does it end up brewing as much coffee as the Coffee Ninja carafe does not hold as much as the glass pot of the Mr Coffee.
I had a chance to test the two brew settings "classic" and "rich" and really could not tell the difference in the output. I used freshly ground coffee from a burr grinder in both instances. The result in both occasions was a rich flavor that was quite appealing. Classic might have been weaker in flavor - perhaps I am just searching for a difference in the two settings?
The one thing I did not like about the Coffee Ninja is the warmer seems to stay on (at least the red indicator light remains on) when I turn the unit off; and you have to have the unit on to operate on the time delayed brew - something that even the Mr. Coffee maker does not need.
The basket for the ground coffee is reusable/rinse and clean - though my first attempt at cleaning had me taking the entire "drawer" out and it is a pain to reinstall - apparently you don't need to pull the coffee ground holder/drawer out all the way - and there is a handle on the ground basket so look for it to prevent my first incident with the machine.
Overall it is a very nice unit though I don't really see much difference in the usability over my Mr. Coffee with brew delay timer. If you want something more versatile or you want just a cup of coffee to brew at a time, then the Coffee Ninja would be a good choice - you can preheat water to compensate for the cup drawing heat out of the brewed product.

This monitor has a crisp and bright display with great contrast. There are two hdmi connections on the back along with displayport connection and usb 3.0. 1080p display. I used it as a second display on my Asus laptop and it worked well for video editing and other graphics work.
Please note that the user manual and other information are on the supplied disc. Installation information is there as well. Base for the monitor base has to be installed and better instructions than those taped to the screen are on the disc in the user manual there.
Monitor case has interesting "omen" graphics; monitor settings are accessed from behind the screen on the right lower area behind the power on light. Not well marked.

I've worked in a real coffee establishment that isn't Charbucks and have used real burr grinders that are high quality and also from Italy.
This is a great consumer level coffee grinder that is mainly constructed of various metals and it is a true quality piece of machinery.
While I wished for a better control over the grind in terms of being able to select more than three levels it provides, the lack of fine tuning is made up for in the true lack of noise this makes compared to the commercial unit I've used before.
This has a knob to control how many cups of coffee you'll need to grind - I still haven't found the exact setting for my coffee machine, but what is ground is truly aromatic and there is a significant taste difference in the whole bean ground to order and that stuff that is bagged or canned already ground. Ah, the smell of a fresh ground coffee that is immediately brewed. Heavenly!
Warning: Please make sure the top hopper is clicked into position so it won't move - if it is loose in any way you'll likely need to dump the beans out and to ensure that no beans have leaked out - my first grind had the grinding stopped because the hopper had slipped out of position - even though I thought I had felt it click. After I found how it feels to be secured, the grinding went on as desired.
This unit is a bit pricey, but it is a high quality item that is worth the money. You will truly enjoy the ground coffee aroma and the resulting brewed coffee flavor. This is a serious consumer machine!

Too cute for its own good - limited use

I found this product to be less than satisfactory for anything but limited use.
First, installation is not intuitive - like some new products, there are NO INSTRUCTIONS - it has something that must be a picture based set of instructions, but it does not give you any clue what to do beyond 1 and 2. It does not tell you what to do next. You will have to go to bluetooth on your device and activate the pairing from a listing. Not sure why this was not mentioned at all. Volume controls are not described at all - they are the - and + signs on the body (in yellow).
Second, sound is okay - that is why I note it is limited. Better than nothing but certainly not great sounding.
Third, no instructions on charging this - there is a piece of ill fitting rubberized plastic at the base that hides the micro usb charging port. You'd think at least it would be labeled or ingrained with "usb".
I guess if you need a portable speaker for some device that is water resistant, this is okay. I wonder why you'd need one since I'd never put anything electrical near water.
I'm over 50 and I see no use for this other than to leave it in a place where I don't have speakers and to use it on a limited basis. Instructions are awful to non-existant and those debits are what bring down this score.

Expensive. Works flawlessly

I've learned with vacuums that you get what you pay for.
And this Dyson is a pricey unit.
And it is so much more than a dirt devil.
At first glance and use, this Dyson product is a monster in size - compared to the featherweight products from Dirt Devil and the like, this thing is more than a handful. It is bulky.
But I've learned that lightweight products are often cheaply made and last about a year. And while I cannot testify to the longevity of this Dyson product, I can say that everything about this product screams "quality".
I first used this product as a replacement for a hand held battery powered Dirt Devil that I like (but loathe for its lack of battery life and its failures after a year).
After getting used to the heft of the Dyson, I found it to be an amazing performer - it was fairly quiet and it never seemed to lack the oomph to pick up items - I used it to even vacuum my car - the heft was a factor here in ease of use but once I adapted to the bulk, the product never let me down in picking up things even the Dirt Devil couldn't (or wouldn't).
Carefully read the instructions with the product on how to dump the collection of debris you have in the canister - took me several times to master because it is different and seems like overkill. It works and I adapted.
I used the "beater bar" on some places that give my Bissell robot vacuum problems and once again the Dyson came through - wonderful machine to do touch up work.
In the end, this is fairly expensive - but it does seem like it will last a long time - and it is highly effective in spot treatments of cleaning and in the hand-held mode replacing a Dirt Devil, it takes some getting used to - but it does better than I could have expected.

I had a tight budget with which to purchase a new laptop - I've been searching for months and nearly purchased a Dell (my preferred brand) on their website.
I happened to shop online at Bestbuy and discovered this computer for $329.99 - it hit every need that i had - and the ram was upgradeable for future needs - it was not a Pentium or Celeron processor which was a plus. Has a fifth gen i3 - and it simply exceeds what I expected at this price point.
I am so pleased with this purchase - the screen does lack a bit on contrast, but when hooked to HD monitor, the monitor resolves that. It streams Hulu and Netflix really well.
For the price, this unit is hard to beat.

Follow up remarks after a week or so of usage

Had purchased a laptop for my niece for Christmas, upgraded her Dell from 4 to 8 gb of ram - had her spare 4 gb ram and replaced the 2gb one in this laptop - performance upgrade was noticeable making laptop now an 8 gb unit.
I was curious about maxing out ram to the 12 gb limit noted and secured an 8 gb stick for $45 elsewhere and installed yesterday. Not as much difference in performance as going from 6 to 8 gb, but it is nice to have the ram at a great price - now unit still hasn't cost me $400 in total costs.
This is a great computer for the price - 5th gen i3 makes a big difference over the i3's from the past that I've used. The more I use this the more impressed I am with it. At this price it even outperforms some computers the company I work for has purchased at double the price.
I would definitely buy this again and another made by Asus.

Since the initial write-up, I have found that this device works fine around the house if I needed to listen to iHeart radio from my tablet. The sound is acceptable and its portability is good though the small yellow cord really is of no use.

The advertisement and stated processor says its a 9th gen i7-9700 however if you click on the pdf information for this computer it states that it is an 8th Gen i7-8700? Also indicates that graphics are onboard and not the GPU?
I have one of these new ones and it is definitely a i7-9700.

WINDOWS 7 PRO.OR HOME PREMIUM
No - but when you first use it - go to desktop live tile, use Internet Explorer and download "classic shell" - install the free app - it restores start menu and makes the computer look like Windows 7 and you still have the live tiles to use later as you get used to it.
I've found that on every Win8.1 machine I've had, it far exceeds the speed of Win7. In fact, after using 8.1, 7 seems like Vista.

Made in China and very cheap product - almost all plastic except for metal band inside the frame. Based on reviews I was expecting superb quality - well, this is budget cheap in construction.

Are the PX100 or 200 compatible with windows based PC?
Have an iPhone 3G would like to use the same headphone with my windows 7 computer...I travel so the folding is a great feature...
Works with my windows 8.1 laptop just fine. Just beware that the cord is shortish.
