Great speakers - but big as sattelites
on October 29, 2018

These Klipsch bookshelf speakers are a perfect package if you're tight on space or looking for the complete surround package.
In my setup I'm limited on space at the back-side - so these are pretty big to use as rear-surrounds. You can see from the photos these are serious speakers - if you are tight on space in your setup, these would work perfectly well as your front-facing L/R pair without any problems.
Audio wise they bring a element to the surround experience that you just dont get with smaller satellite speakers. Rather than the odd FX, they help immerse you in the audio - especially when paired with an AVR capable of DTS:X or similar virtual audio space. I ran these using a single pair of quality audio cables, but they include dual-posts for bi-amping the speaker if you need that extra refinement.
Bass is booming, mid and high frequencies are crystal clear as you would expect from any premium Klipsch speaker. My only criticism is the piano-black gloss finish - its a dust magnet, and prime for microscratches and finger prints.
Do your stress levels a favor and buy these speakers in the matt-black or walnut finish.
The back of the Klipsch have a bass exhaust, which although helps maintain the premium quality audio - if you have kids its likely to be a magnet for little hands (and whatever they can poke in there). Some of the larger speakers have these too, but tend to be up against the wall. If you angle these bookshelfs, or have them free standing for surrounds (and have little kids) you might want to obscure the back - anything that goes in there lands straight on the speaker cones, and I dont know how easy it would be to get it out.
I received these speakers at no charge for evaluation, but all opinions expressed on here are my own, based on real use in my personal environment and setup.

Premium speakers - worth every penny
on October 29, 2018

Speakers are a matter of personal preference I find - you either find speakers that you like and make the room fit them in , or you buy the speakers that fit your room.
These Klipsch floor-standing front speakers, justify you building a new house if necessary.
The bass is booming , the mids and the highs pull out every nuance of the audio - whether its one of my go-to movies (Star Trek Beyond) and wide range of audio (from electronic, though Jazz and classical) the speakers makes them all sounds like they've been upscaled to a new resolution. (I even considered whether I need a sub in a small setup - the bass is really that good).
Make no mistake these speakers look pricey - but you get every penny's worth out of them. You can hear phrases and music that you didnt know where there - the audio experience is second to none.
I ran these using a single pair of quality audio cables, but they include dual-posts for bi-amping the speaker if you need that extra refinement (yes, these go to '11'!!)
My only criticism of these 800F speakers, is nothing to do with the audio quality. The piano black is as shiny as it sounds (check the photos).
I was initially concerned that they might reflect the image from the screen but if you're head on its not an issue (so think about the placement relative to where your crew sits). The biggest issue I think is you're going to be constantly dusting and wiping the glossy surface. Let alone panicing that they will pick up any microscratches (because they WILL show up!)
Dont look any further for the best all-round , floor standing front speakers you can find. These are precision engineered audio machines, and will surpass all expectations (and I have high expectations). Just do your stress-levels a favour and buy the regular , non-piano black or walnut finish version.
I received these speakers at no charge for evaluation, but all opinions expressed on here are my own, based on real use in my personal environment and setup.

Feature rich Pioneer AVR
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: DickieUK
from San Diego, CA
Like me , you probably have you own brand preferences - maybe Sony for your TV, some other brand for your speakers and cables, and other components in your setup.
I've been a lifelong Denon fan when it comes to amplifiers - both regular and surround, but this Pioneer certainly impressed me.
As with most premium AVR's these days it has all the regular features (HDCP2.2 / 3D / 4K passthrough etc) as well as some additional extras (4K upscaling of older content - which you can disable and let your TV or source device do it) that make it a breeze to setup.
The one that caught my attention was the Reflex Optimizer - I've been trying to get a resonable Atmos setup without having to pull down and re-wire my ceiling. The upfiring speakers I have are a reasonable compromise, but until I met the LX303 I had no real way to affect the effect (if you'll excuse the phrase).
Its little features like this and the multi-zone, built-in chromecast and support for HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision that all add up to make this an impressive package.
Is it impressive enough to displace your current brand? I think you should definitely take a serious look at the LX303.
With configurations ranging from standard 5:1 all the way up to 9.2 (and a variety of Atmos options in between) , I think you would be hard pushed to find anything that had all of the configuration flexibility , married with the full feature set that you get in this one product.
The only reason I didnt give it a full 5 stars was the lack of intuitive interface to find some of the nitty gritty settings - but I guess thats just an artifact of cramming so many features in a menu system that still have to be easy to operate for most people.
I received this product at no charge for evaluation, but the opinions expressed on here are my own based on installation and operation in my own environment

Dont skimp on your center channel!
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: DickieUK
from San Diego, CA
I started out with a pretty simple but effective 5:1:2 setup, which some pretty average speakers. The one thing that always frustrated me was having to manually 'up' the center channel to try and raise the vocal levels among all the bangs, crashes and generally surround and FX spinning around the other speakers.
Enter the Klipsch , and its another dimension.
Think about your current setup - those speakers you have at the left and right front? The pretty powerful ones? Imagine turning one on its side in the middle and you have a good feel for the Klipsch center.
Maybe its obvious to those audiophiles amongst you, but for the lesser mortals like me it takes a center speaker as good as the Klipsch to make you realize than anything less that a quality center speaker is making the rest of your setup unbalanced (and you'll constantly be tweaking the levels like I was). You can see in the photos that I have mine sitting on some audio foam - this isn't required, but because my cabinet has a metal shelf, I prefer it to angle and reduce vibrations.
As with all the Klipsch speakers, the copper cones are striking - but the included grill helps it to blend in a little easier if you're easily distracted by bright shiny things!!
Can't say enough good things about this speaker - if you're on a budget and you can only replace one speaker in your surround setup, make it this one.
I received this product for evaluation at no charge, but the opinions expressed here are my own based on the setup and operation in my personal environment.

All other subwoofers are toys compared to this...
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: DickieUK

In my previous 5:1:2 setup, I had what I thought was a reasonable quality sub. That was until I heard the Klipsch.
First of all , lets be clear. This thing is big. Not massive or dominating, but big. You have to have an idea where to put this before you take it out of the box (which will likely take you 2 people btw).
It has a nice vented base , so there's no need for additional under-sub mats to absorb the sound - and when you hear it, you wouldnt want to miss a single beat.
As with every sub setup, getting the levels right is a matter of personal taste and environment. Pick some content you are familiar with (I used Star Trek Beyond) and then enjoy the floor show. If its in the corner of a room, you'll likely need lower levels - but the R-115SW has a nifty switch on the back to help you quickly adjust the levels to the appropriate room size (mine is on the lowest setting - I imagine the highest level would work for a stadium!)
Its very difficult to get over-enthusiastic about sub-woofers generally, but this Klipsch changed my opinion. If you are looking for a premium sub for your setup, you cant go wrong with the 115SW.
The copper cones are striking, but also likely to be a magnet for any curious child - thankfully a more subtle black mesh grill cover is included if you want to make it literally part of the furniture.
I received this product for evaluation at no charge, but the opinions expressed here are my own based on the setup and operation in my personal environment.

Convenient adapter without the cables
on October 29, 2018
Posted by: DickieUK
from San Diego, CA
The WA-2 is a wireless replacement for running a potentially lengthy RCA cable between your sub and the AVR. Of important note is that this ONLY works with Klipsch subwoofers with the appropriate port - this will not let you run any old sub wirelessly.
In terms of the setup, its as easy as you would expect - plug in one adapter to the sub-pre out on the AVR and the other adapter to the sub and switch it on!. The adapters automatically pair over wireless, and so assuming you're not already running a heavy amount of RF noise and interference there should be no additional setup. The cables at both ends are a little short - easily replaced at the RCA end into the AVR, but you'll have to get creative about the shorter flylead that plug into the back of the sub.
99% of the time you wouldnt be able to tell its wireless, but occasionally there is a minor rumble or 'tap' from the sub which I think is the wireless signal going in and out.
This thing really does what it says on the box, and is an easy setup - but I'd suggest it only if you have a real physical problem running a single RCA cable. Considering you're already paying for a premium quality sub, its likely to be worth your while to invest in some quality cables too.
I received this item for evaluation at no charge, but my opinions expressed here are my own and are are based on having installed and tested the product in my environment and setup.

Good extender - not sure if you'll need it though
on December 22, 2017
Posted by: DickieUK
from San Diego, CA
I wrote a review for the Nest Secure system and for completeness thought I'd share some insights on the Nest Connect.
The Nest Detect sensors (door/window/motion sensors) do not use wifi to connect to the Nest Secure system - they have a network protocol called Weave which like any RF medium has its limits (due to either distance , obstacles or interference). So this is the range extender exclusively for the Weave network, and exclusively for Nest Secure <-> Nest Detect.
My house is around 2500Sq ft , and I have sensors all over at each end of the house and while the connect is up and running just by plugging it in, I found that my system works perfect well without it.
I received this product in exchange for my evaluation and review, but as I say if you have some specific building construction that blocks the signal , or are just living in a huge mansion (you can have up to 4 connects in a single installation) - you might find you need one of these, but I would try it without and only buy this if you find you're pushing beyond the laws of physics.

Tough on bad guys. Easy on you.The Nest Secure alarm system is easy to live with every day. Just tap Nest Tag on Nest Guard to arm and disarm the alarm - no passcode needed. Nest Detect sensors look out for doors, windows and rooms. And with the Nest app, you can keep an eye on what matters.

Easy Home Security in a Box - Great EcoSystem
on December 22, 2017
Posted by: DickieUK
from San Diego, CA
I've been a long time customer of Nest Products (even when they used be DropCam) so I'm pretty well versed in how good and easy to operate their products are - but I was still blown away by this new Nest Secure Alarm system.
Straight out of the box, one of the nicest things is the way it slots into the Nest Ecosystem and apps. If like me you're already using Nest Cameras, Nest Protect and Nest Thermostats then its pretty seamless to setup and operate the alarm.
The kit comes with the Nest base station which operates as both the control center, but also has a motion sensor built in. You can either set or disable the alarm from the base with a key code or one of the RFID fobs included in the pack - but of course you more often than not will do it directly in the app (which sends a popup if you are close to home offering to automatically disable the alarm - neat!).
If like me you're wondering how it maintains against tampering - the unit has a 12hr battery built in, so once the alarm is set or triggered it'll run and operate normally for up to 12hrs even if you pull the plug. The control and messaging leverages your in-home wifi and internet connection, but again for an additional $5 per month, you can add a cellular backup option to keep you alerted even if someone pulls your internet connection.
Theres some magic built into the sensors (check my pictures for a sense of scale against an iPhone). They are pretty minimal in size can be either screwed or stuck (using the affixed adhesive pads) to either door or windows, along with their magnet 'buddy' - and when the alarm is armed , will trigger a countdown before it sounds. Pretty obvious I know - but you can also install these WITHOUT the magnet as they also include a motion sensor in each one! So you can mount the sensor on any wall and you have a nifty motion detector which will set off the alarm when armed, but also display a nifty 'path light' in the dark to help you around. Each one runs on a replaceable battery so I'll see how long they last (I have one with the path light on , one without to test).
I set them whole thing up in under 30 mins - and within another couple of hours had already headed back to the local BestBut to pick up another 3 or 4 of these sensors (Nest Detect as they are branded standalone). They really are that good, and do exactly what they say on the tin.
Couple of minor things I would note - the motion detector is only recorded in the system logs when the alarm is armed. With the Nest Camera you can get a push alert when it detects motion, but the only alerts you get from the Nest Secure are when the alarm is going off. Same goes for the doors opening and closing - its recorded in a log, but there's no way to just get a simple push notification.
You can arm the alarm in one of 2 ways; Firstly fully armed, and when it detects motion either at the base or on any of the sensors, or if any of the monitored doors are opened you get the countdown before the alarm sounds. The second option is 'guarding' which is useful if like me you have 2 young kids who can open doors to the street- in this mode it will sounds the alarm if any of the doors or windows are opened, but it will ignore any motion. (On each of the motion sensors you can enable an option to ignore motion of things like pets under 40lbs which again is a nice feature)
As I say I'd like a halfway house, where I could arm it as 'guarding' and just get a notification rather than sounding the alarm , but its a small gripe when you consider how fully functioned, well thought out and easy to operate this item is. Anyone looking for a home security system can't go wrong with this - especially if you're already bought into the Nest product line.
I initially received this item in exchange for my evaluation and review, but as I mentioned I've already invested further in the additional sensors and key fobs to fully integrate it into my everyday life around the house.

High performing whole home wifi - finally..
on February 3, 2017
Posted by: DickieUK
from Seattle
I've been a long time network 'expert' trying to get full wifi coverage in my various homes over the years. I've run very expensive routers and wireless access points, of pretty much every vendor you could imagine.
The Velop is the first time I've plugged something in and its just worked - don't be deceived those techies amongst you, less is sometimes more.
At the moment there are a lot of restrictive features in the app (incl. the way it makes you setup with a phone/tablet and no web interface), but there is a back-end engineering/support interface that gives you more of what you would expect. I have ethernet cables in a lot of rooms and the Velop allows you to use that as a backhaul, effectively making this a mesh of access points that you can put wherever you want. None of the other mesh vendors currently allow this.
I have to say though even as a power user I'm quite enjoying the low maintenance aspect of just plug it in, setup the basic networking info and let it go. Is it 100% perfect? No , not yet. There are some kinks in the management app, and the way some odd devices connect will always need some refinement (nothing new there) but in general I can walk from one end of the 3000sqft/2storey house to the other end, on a factime or VOIP call and it never drops once.
I think despite all the rough edges on this , thats what I (and probably you reading this) will like the most. It finally solves the issue of whole home wifi coverage without needing expensive cabling to wifi ninja planning skills.

Surprisingly effective!
on January 11, 2017
Posted by: DickieUK
from Seattle
I've always been a bit skeptical about these things as I'm both a very light sleeper, but also very easy distracted (the kind of person who has to wear earphone to concentrate - you get the picture).
So I received this item in exchange for my honest opinion and I can say I'm surprisingly impressed with it.
Maybe it was down to my expectations that this would create some 'cone of silence' around me rather than the reality that it creates a consistent background noise that was the issue. But I took it out the box and plugged it in, and started flicking through the white-noise settings.
On first pass they appear to be just creative static you'd get from an old TV - and then suddenly I realized... I couldn't hear the rain dropping on the window frame anymore. Every time it rains its a bug bear sitting in this quiet back room with this persistent tap-tap-tap noise from the gutters, but this thing wiped out the noise.
Its an odd sensation but once you get used to the noise, it genuinely covers the background noises that you started to take for granted. It has 10 fan noises and 10 white noises of varying severity and intensity so the trick it to find the one that best matches the frequency of your current 'disturbance'.
I havent tried it for sleeping yet, thats the next test - but I'l definitely keeping this thing on my desk so keep me focused throughout the day.
I'm sure you could achieve the same thing with an iPhone app or out of the computer speakers but theres something nice an tactile about having it as part of the furniture rather than linked to some other piece of technology.

Introducing MX Keys Mini for Mac, a smaller, smarter, and mightier minimalist wireless keyboard with a layout for Mac made for creators. The minimalist form factor provides improved ergonomics by aligning your shoulders and allowing you to place your mouse closer to your keyboard for less arm reaching, more comfort, and better body posture. Perfect Stroke keys are shaped for your fingertips with optimal key stability and tactile responsiveness to keep you oriented and in your flow. The backlit keys light up the moment your hands approach, and automatically adjust to suit changing lighting conditions. Smart Dictation, Mic Mute/Unmute and Emoji keys streamline your workflow even further.

Will the MX keys mini for Mac be available in Black or space grey in the future? The color is the only thing holding me back from buying it

The marketing literature appears to show a space grey variant alongside the silver one, although I'm not sure if its generally available yet.
I have been testing the grey one and the white backlight with the white keys makes it difficult to read, so I too would recommend the space gray variant when you can get it.

Does it work with Mac systems, extending an Airport setup?

Using the airport 'extend a network' feature? No. You would basically setup this up as an external extender (where it connects to the airport network like a client) but it wouldn't extend it in the airport management domain (but yes, you could extend the SSID's)

Is the Linksys AC1900 compatible with a Westell Router Modem 7500?

Yes - although the 7500 only supports 2.4Ghz b/g networking, so you can only extend that network (not the 5Ghz)

will this wi-fi boost my signal to my ps4 i have AT&T U-verse cisco . keep losing or week signal late at night when no one is using any wi-fi and in the afternoon when no one but me r home ???

Yes definitely - just make sure you extend the 2.4GHz network (unless you have a new PS4 Slim/Pro that supports the 5Ghz network).
The key point is that you have to install the extender not where the PS4 is but somewhere in the middle between the PS4 and the main router - so this device acts as a 'half-way' repeater. You still need to have a good signal to the repeater from the main wifi for it to carry onto the PS4 but then the PS4 should connect to this without any problems,

Will i beable to get wifi extended outdoors in my yard inside my camper? HOW FAR FROM MY HOUSE WILL IT REACH.I HAVE LARGE LOT wirh tent trailer

The 'how far' question really depends on the environment. If its in the open air I can easily see it reaching a few hundred feet (depending on whether you use 2.4 or 5Ghz networking). The more obstructions / walls etc in the way will cut down the distance.

One important thing to note is that you have to try and put this 'in the middle' between where the current router is , and where the 'dead zone' is. For example if the camper is 300ft away from the main wifi router, then you'll probably need to plug this into an AC outlet somewhere around 150ft from the main router which may or may not be practical if you have no AC outlets in the middle.

do you have to run any wires for this devise, and does it boost computer and phone

You don't have to - no. It will function as a wireless repeater/extender of your existing network just by plugging it into an AC outlet which is somewhere in range of your existing WIFI. Should work for any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz devices that can connect to your normal wifi

This unit is nice in that it DOES have an option to run it as a wireless access point if you decide to run a wire/ethernet cable, but thats not a requirement.
